Aston Villa 0-2 Tottenham: Townsend & Soldado get Spurs back to winning ways

    330620hp2.jpg

Goals in either half from Andros Townsend and Roberto Soldado helped Tottenham to a 2-0 win over Aston Villa at Villa Park on Sunday.

Townsend, who starred in England's final two World Cup qualifiers, continued his rich vein of form, scoring the first after 31 minutes when his expert delivery found its way past Brad Guzan.

Soldado then made sure of the three points nine minutes after the hour mark to send Tottenham fifth in the Premier League.

While Townsend will again hit the headlines for his goalscoring exploits, the game will also be remembered for all the wrong reasons after a linesman was hit by a smoke bomb thrown from the crowd following Townsend's opener, an incident that could result in an FA investigation.

Villa's only change from the 0-0 draw with Hull City last Saturday saw Nathan Baker replace Ciaran Clark in defence, while top goalscorer Christian Benteke started on the bench after overcoming a hip injury sustained in September.

For Tottenham, Vlad Chiriches made his Premier League debut with Sandro given a first league start since January after recovering from a knee injury.

Andre Villas-Boas was also able to name Aaron Lennon on the bench, having made just one appearance for the club this season following a foot problem.

After a low-key opening 15 minutes, it was Tottenham who threatened first, with Sandro testing Guzan from long range after Soldado appeared to handle the ball.

Ashley Westwood then went close for Villa, with his teasing delivery forcing a good save from Hugo Lloris amid a crowded penalty area.

Andreas Weimann almost took advantage of careless play in the Tottenham backline when he fired over after 26 minutes before Townsend edged the visitors ahead shortly after the half-hour mark.

Townsend whipped in a cross from the right and, while Soldado almost got a touch on it, the initial delivery found its way past Guzan as Villa conceded at home in the league for a 15th consecutive game.

The goal was soured somewhat, however, when linesman Dave Bryan was struck by a smoke bomb as Tottenham celebrated the opener.

Weimann came close to equalising when he curled a Westwood lay-off just past Lloris' left-hand post five minutes before the break, although it was Townsend who had the last chance of the half.

The in-form winger's fierce drive forced a strong right-handed save from Guzan moments before the half-time whistle.

Paulinho saw an effort saved by Guzan four minutes into the second half, although both sides struggled to fashion openings, with Villa opting to bring on Benteke after an hour.

It almost paid dividends when the Belgium international headed Leandro Bacuna's cross marginally over the bar three minutes later.

However, Tottenham doubled their lead courtesy of Soldado's third Premier League goal for the club.

The Spaniard took a Paulinho throughball perfectly in his stride before calmly dinking it over Guzan to make it 2-0 after 69 minutes.

Townsend continued to threaten without further reward as Tottenham extended their unbeaten run against Aston Villa to 11 matches in all competitions.

Fiorentina 4-2 Juventus: Rossi nets hat-trick to guide hosts to victory

    330541hp2.jpg

Fiorentina ended their 15-year wait for a Serie A home win against Juventus on Sunday as a Giuseppe Rossi hat-trick saw them triumph 4-2.

Antonio Conte’s side took a 2-0 lead into the break thanks to Carlos Tevez and Paul Pogba but an incredible 15-minute spell saw Fiorentina turn the match on its head as Rossi took centre-stage to inspire the hosts' comeback.

The Italian pulled one back from the penalty spot before equalising with a powerful finish. Joaquin gave Fiorentina the lead in the final 15 minutes and Rossi completed his hat-trick late on after Juan Cuadrado's clever pass.

Vincenzo Montella's side came into the fixture having only picked up two points from their last three league matches, but he felt only one change was necessary as Facundo Roncaglia replaced Nenad Tomovic, while Fernando Llorente and Pogba replaced Fabio Quagliarella and Arturo Vidal for Juventus, the latter dropped after returning late from international duty.

Tevez and Llorente went close in a quiet opening half hour, the former heading wide while the Spaniard was denied by a Gonzalo Rodriguez intervention.

The Argentine defender would be at fault just a few minutes later, however. Tevez controlled and turned just inside the area, but was needlessly tripped by Rodriguez, allowing the former Manchester City man the chance from 12 yards, which he confidently buried.

The visitors added a quick-fire second in the 40th minute. Cuadrado burst back into the area to clear the ball, but his attempt while sliding flew up into the air rather than away and gifted Pogba an easy finish from close range.

Juventus went close to opening up a three-goal lead soon after the break as Claudio Marchisio poked the ball past Roncaglia and charged into the area, but Neto blocked the midfielder’s chipped effort.

The Brazilian goalkeeper was becoming increasingly busy and was forced into two more saves before the hour mark to deny Giorgio Chiellini and Andrea Pirlo.

The second half had been dominated by the visitors, but after Kwadwo Asamoah bundled Matias Fernandez to the ground inside the area, Rossi stroked home the resulting penalty with 24 minutes left.

Italy striker Rossi pulled Fiorentina level in the 76th minute as he held off his marker and then fired across Gianluigi Buffon, into the bottom far corner, as Juve began to rue their wasted chances.

Two minutes later, Montella's side completed the turnaround and took the lead. Second-half substitute Joaquin found space in the right side of the area and calmly guided the ball past Buffon to seal a memorable comeback.

What looked like being another defeat to the Turin giants turned into an emphatic victory as Rossi completed his hat-trick with nine minutes to go as he latched on to Cuadrado’s pass and fired low past the helpless Buffon, wrapping up the three points.

Defeat leaves Juventus five points off Roma at the top of Serie A as they languish in third.

    Conte bemused by Juventus capitulation

    330643_heroa.jpg

Juventus coach Antonio Conte was left stunned by his team's self-destruction as they let a two-goal lead slip to lose 4-2 at Fiorentina.

The Serie A champions went into Sunday's match unbeaten against the Viola at Stadio Artemio Franchi since 1998, and that run looked like it would continue as they went into half-time two goals up through Carlos Tevez and Paul Pogba.

But it was a completely different story after the break, with Giuseppe Rossi grabbing a hat-trick and Juve coach Conte was at a loss to explain the defeat.

"I think the game was practically closed. We were in control in every way, even in the second half and had some more great chances to add to our tally," he told Sky Sport Italia.

"Then something strange and unthinkable happened. We lost a match that we had been dominating. How do we explain it?

"In 10 minutes we destroyed all the hard work, both during and before the game. We managed to allow Fiorentina back into it and concede odd goals.

"This is football. We have to take these 10 nightmare minutes and learn from them. I continue to say this year will be very, very difficult.

"In these 10 minutes we did everything to help Fiorentina get back into the match, more than they had been at any stage. There are huge regrets.

"We struggled more last season and got a draw, whereas this time until the 70th minute it was all Juventus. This is football, nothing can be taken for granted."

With a Champions League tie against Real Madrid coming up on Wednesday, it had been suggested that Conte's men had let their concentration wander, but the 44-year-old did not feel that this was the case.

"This was an important game in a fiery atmosphere, so we could not be distracted by Real Madrid," Conte said."We were in the match from the start and only went wrong in those 10 minutes.

"It has happened a few times this season that we’ve conceded chaotic goals. We have to work on it. That is all."

    Kahn: Weidenfeller deserves Germany cap

    172059_heroa.jpg

Former Germany No.1 Oliver Kahn says Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller should be part of Joachim Low’s World Cup squad for next year.

Germany coach Low, who signed an extension to his contract, had hinted recently that the BVB shot-stopper, now 33, could be in line for a call-up when the Mannschaft take on Italy and England in friendlies next month.

And Kahn believes a first cap is not before time.

“He could have had more caps than he has earned,” he told Bild.

"He’s a great guy with a great attitude.”

Dortmund have a number of homegrown players, such as Kevin Grosskreutz, who have not featured that heavily for Low’s side, but Kahn insists that these players must be given a chance on the international stage.

“It is often underestimated how much confidence emanates from winning a title," Kahn continued. "The Dortmund players are ready for the really big challenges.”

However, while the 44-year-old would be pleased to see Weidenfeller introduced to the national set-up, there is only one goalkeeper in his eyes that should be starting for Germany.

He added: “Neuer is the No.1. He has mastered all facets of modern goalkeeping, is at the cutting edge of technique and is a footballing keeper.”

    Simeone downplays Espanyol defeat

    330373_heroa.jpg

Diego Simeone has insisted that spirits have not been dampened in the Atletico Madrid dressing-room, despite his side slipping to their first defeat of the season.
Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois' unlucky own goal on 53 minutes handed Espanyol a narrow victory and ended their run of eight straight wins to start the league campaign. Simeone, whose team face Austria Vienna in the Champions League on Tuesday, said his side tried their all to find an equaliser at Estadio Cornella-El Prat.

"It doesn't hurt because it's part of the game. We have always said our goal is to go match by match," he said.

"Today, we faced an adverse goal, but in the second half the team tried to draw in different ways and that was important.

"We didn't moan, but looked – maybe not too clearly – for a way to the goal."

Simeone lamented in-form forward Diego Costa's missed chance in the second half, but could not fault the efforts of his players.

"I think that the clearest chance was Diego Costa's, which could have taken us to equalise, but the effort was there," he said.

"In the second half we had 30 minutes to try, but it was impossible. We just have to congratulate the rival and get ready for Tuesday's match – which is a difficult one as well."

Simeone said his side were always going to find it hard after falling behind, with Courtois diverting a Juan Fuentes cross into his own net with his left foot.

"It was a locked match, tough as expected. The first team to score was going to be more comfortable," Simeone said.

"In first half we struggled to find the game although we didn't suffer in defence and we had Koke's shot off the post and Diego Costa's chance to score.

"In the second half, after their goal, we tried to equalise with different variants, but the goal didn't arrive."

Townsend vows to keep feet on ground after first Premier League goal for Tottenham

    330620_heroa.jpg

Andros Townsend has acknowledged the importance of staying grounded after a string of impressive displays for Tottenham and England vastly increased his public profile.

The 22-year-old scored a stunning 25-yard strike on his Three Lions debut nine days ago before opening his account for Spurs against Aston Villa on Sunday.

His exploits with England garnered high praise from the press and public alike before being included in a media storm with Roy Hodgson regarding the now-infamous 'space monkey' joke - but Townsend is only interested in his on-field displays.

"Scoring for my country on my debut was one of the highlights of my career but getting my first goal for my hometown club in the Premier League is up there," Townsend told Sky Sports.

"The main thing for me now is not to get carried away, keep my feet on the ground and keep putting in performances when I get the chance for Spurs.

"I've just been dying to get back out on the pitch. Obviously the positive press was nice but you don't want to get too carried away.

"It's just all about playing football and I was desperate to get back out on the pitch and I've got a goal today and I'm delighted."

Townsend's delivery from the right evaded Roberto Soldado and Lewis Holtby to give Tottenham the lead against Paul Lambert's side, and the winger was pleased to help his team register three points after losing to West Ham last time out.

He continued: "It's been one of the best few weeks of my life and the main thing today was getting back to winning ways after the result against West Ham and I think the second-half performance showed what we're all about, we stuck in and got the three points.

"We didn't have the best of first halves. Villa defended well and got men behind the ball. Obviously I got the goal, it was a cross, I'm not going to take credit for it but I've been unlucky in the past so I'll take that."

    330312_heroa.jpg

Sir Alex Ferguson believes it would be a "fantastic achievement" for David Moyes to win a trophy in his first season at Manchester United.

Moyes has not enjoyed the best of starts at Old Trafford after replacing the legendary Ferguson this summer.United are eighth in the Premier League and could only draw 1-1 with Southampton on Saturday, leaving them eight points behind leaders Arsenal.

Di Maria backs Caballero for Argentina

    313404_heroa.jpg

Angel Di Maria believes that Willy Caballero has done enough to win an Argentina call up after both players featured as Real Madrid beat Malaga 2-0.

Di Maria opened the scoring for the hosts on 46 minutes and Cristiano Ronaldo added a late penalty to seal the win, but Caballero produced a series of top-quality saves to keep los Boquerones in the game.

Speaking to Realmadrid.com, the former Benfica forwarded admitted that he was impressed with his countryman in the opposition goal and felt that he would not be unwelcome in an Argentina squad.

"Caballero is in great form," the 25-year-old told his club's official website.

"He has shown how good he is against a great rival. I hope he has the opportunity to play with Argentina."

The victory has moved Madrid to within three points of Barcelona, who were held to a goalless draw by Osasuna on Saturday, and Di Maria believes that los Merengues are threatening to hit a rich vein of form.

"We played a great match, that's what the coach wanted," the former Rosario Central youth player added.

"We tried to do everything as well as we could against a team that are in good form. We are doing things well and improving as a team. We are working hard every day and at half-time the coach said he was happy with the job that we were doing and that he knew we could win the game."

Madrid play Juventus in the Champions League on Wednesday before turning their attention to Barcelona at Camp Nou on Saturday.

    Madrid attitude delights Ancelotti

    324133_heroa.jpg

Carlo Ancelotti has underlined the attitude of his Real Madrid players as the main highlight from their victory over Malaga at Santiago Bernabeu.

Los Merengues took the lead when Angel Di Maria's cross evaded everyone to find the back of net on 46 minutes, while Cristiano Ronaldo sealed the 2-0 win with a stoppage-time penalty when Gareth Bale was adjudged to have been fouled by Weligton.

Ancelotti was thrilled with the win, which saw Madrid close the gap to Barcelona at the top to just three points, and is hopeful his side will continue to display the same qualities against Juventus in midweek and in next weekend's Clasico.

"I enjoyed the game and liked the attitude of the players," the 54-year-old told journalists in a post-match press conference.

"We defended more aggressively and we had a lot of chances. I expect the same in the coming games. We've been more focused and seek to recover the ball quickly. We pressed well and the team showed a lot of composure."

The defeat of los Boquerones means Madrid have now won all three of their games in October and Ancelotti was keen to praise the team for that feat, giving special attention to Asier Illarramendi, Alvaro Morata and Daniel Carvajal.

"Illarra defensively was good though he needs to improve on his passing," the former Milan and Chelsea coach added.

"Morata and Carvajal also played well. I don't know if they'll keep it up but their physical condition is good."

Madrid go into next week's Clasico at Camp Nou third in La Liga with 22 points, while Barcelona lead the way on 25.

Moyes backs Rooney to surpass Sir Bobby Charlton

    329823_heroa.jpg

David Moyes believes it is just a matter of time before Wayne Rooney surpasses Sir Bobby Charlton's goalscoring exploits for Manchester United and England.

Rooney has 202 goals for the Red Devils, 47 behind Charlton's tally of 249, and needs just 11 more strikes for the Three Lions to equal the World Cup winner's international total of 49.

And Moyes believes that as long as the 27-year-old maintains his form and fitness, the records will surely follow.

“I do think that if Wayne stays injury-free, then he will get there,” the Scot told reporters.

“If he keeps up this level of performance, he will make another big dent in the records this season.

“And, once he does that, the finishing line would look that bit closer.

“It’s a big season for Wayne for club and country and he’s started well for both. I hope he does it because it would be an incredible achievement.

“When you think of the regard in which Sir Bobby is held at this club, then, if you broke his records, it would be something which would live with you forever.

“I think it would mean Wayne would achieve legendary status, so let’s hope he achieves it.”

Earlier this month Goal revealed Rooney has rejected the opportunity to discuss a contract extension with United, and Premier League leaders Arsenal have been encouraged to bid for him in January.

Ozil is what Arsenal were missing - Bergkamp

    329721_heroa.jpg

Mesut Ozil has given Arsenal what they have been missing under Arsene Wenger in recent years, according to Gunners legend Dennis Bergkamp.

Ozil has made a stunning start to life in England since arriving from Real Madrid for €50 million on transfer deadline day, and scored twice in Saturday's 4-1 victory over Norwich.

And Bergkamp, who won three Premier League titles with Arsenal and treated Gunners fans to many memorable moments on the pitch, believes Ozil's arrival has galvanised his former club.

"If I look at the bench in the beginning of the season, what he has achieved and what he is doing, he is one of those players who can be decisive in a game, who can link up with the midfielder, but with the strikers as well," said the Dutchman, speaking to Absolute Radio's Rock 'N' Roll Football show.

"And he can provide other players, he can have assists, but he can score goals as well.

"He has got lovely vision, so I believe he is one of the sort of players Arsenal have been missing.

"They had Van Persie who was a little bit like that, but then you miss someone upfront.

"I still believe they could do with another sort of striker, who can score goals, who can score 15/20 goals a season for example. Then they have got quite a good team."

World Cup play-off draw: Portugal meet Sweden, France face Ukraine

Cristiano Ronaldo and his team-mates will have to deal with Zlatan Ibrahimovic's side, while les Bleus take on the Euro 2012 co-hosts
Either Cristiano Ronaldo or Zlatan Ibrahimovic will not be involved in next year's World Cup after the play-off draw pitted Portugal against Sweden.

The sides have met 15 times up to date, with the Scandinavians winning six, drawing six and losing three times.

Elsewhere, France will meet Euro 2012 co-hosts Ukraine as they fight for one place at next summer's tournament.

Didier Deschamps' men have taken on the Ukrainians on seven occasions up till date, with les Bleus emerging victorious four times and drawing the remaining three encounters.

However, Deschamps urged caution ahead of their clash with the Eastern Europeans.

"Portugal and Croatia are nations with experience, but it will not be easy against a team who are undefeated in their last seven matches and concede very few goals," he said.

"Having the second leg at home is a good thing for us. These four days will decide our future. We need a lot of confidence but also a lot of respect for the Ukrainian team."

Finally, Euro 2004 winners Greece take on Romania, while surprise package Iceland face Croatia.

The first legs will be played on November 15, with the returns scheduled to take place four days later on the 19th.
