Barcelona 2-1 Real Madrid: Rampant Neymar outshines Bale

    333097hp2.jpg

Goals from Neymar and Alexis Sanchez saw Gerardo Martino win his first Clasico in charge of Barcelona as they ran out 2-1 winners over Real Madrid on Saturday evening.

Jese Rodriguez scored a late consolation for los Blancos, but the damage had already been done following the Brazilian's close range effort in the first half and Sanchez's moment of brilliance in the second.

The win moves Barcelona four points clear of Atletico Madrid at the top of La Liga, and six ahead of their opponents.

Lionel Messi returned for Martino’s side for his first start in the league for four weeks following a thigh injury, with the hosts also boosted by the return of Javier Mascherano and Daniel Alves.

Madrid gave Gareth Bale his first Clasico start – his second since moving to the Spanish capital – while Luka Modric also returned the starting line-up.

After Sergio Busquets and Sergio Ramos had both been booked in the opening 14 minutes, the game began to settle into its rhythm with Barcelona controlling possession for long periods and Neymar creating two quick opportunities.

Having wasted his first, Neymar made no mistake with his second after excellent work from Iniesta.

The midfielder ran at the Madrid defence before laying the ball into his team-mate and the Brazilian did the rest as he placed the ball through the legs of two defenders on its way into the far corner.

Madrid were denied an equaliser in the closing minutes of the first half by an excellent save from Valdes.

Ronaldo broke down the left and delivered an inviting cross into the six-yard box, with Sami Khedira beating Adriano Correia to the ball, but his effort was well blocked by the goalkeeper.

The hosts began the second half keen to double their advantage quickly and saw good chances for Iniesta and Neymar denied by some resilient defending.

Iniesta saw a long-range effort blocked and Neymar had a volley well saved by Diego Lopez.

Madrid had struggled to create a clear-cut opportunity, but Ronaldo came close to levelling the scores just before the hour. Modric rolled a perfectly-weighted pass into the path of the Portugal international only for Valdes to make a great save down to his right to deny him.

Benzema – who replaced Bale in the 61st minute – saw his powerful strike crash against the crossbar and bounce to safety 10 minutes after coming on.

But Alexis secured the victory with 12 minutes to play as he executed a perfect chip over Lopez from the edge of the penalty area.

Jese tapped in for the visitors during stoppage time after good work from Ronaldo, but was too little too late for Carlo Ancelotti's side as Barca took the Clasico spoils.

Inter 4-2 Verona: Nerazzurri return to winning ways

    333180hp2.jpg

Inter got back to winning ways after securing an entertaining 4-2 victory over Hellas Verona at San Siro on Saturday.

Andrea Mandorlini's side, the surprise package of the season so far following their return to the top flight, headed into the contest on the back of three consecutive victories, with Inter winless from as many games.

But horrible defending from set-pieces undermined their cause as a Vangelis Moras own goal and Rodrigo Palacio set Inter on the way.

Former Italy striker Luca Toni laid on goals for Raphael Martinho and Romulo but each time it only reduced the deficit to two after Esteban Cambiasso and Rolando gave Walter Mazzarri's men much-needed breathing space.

Juan Pablo Carizzo came in for the suspended Samir Handanovic in goal for Inter, who also welcomed Ricky Alvarez into the fold.

Inter started on the front foot and took the lead in the ninth minute as Verona defender Moras diverted Jonathan's wildly off-target volley into his own net.

Verona's defending from corners was haphazard throughout the first half and it cost them again three minutes later. A loose ball fell to Fredy Guarin and his strike was blocked on the line by Fabrizio Cacciatore, only for the rebound to strike the fortuitously placed Palacio and go in.

Midway through the half Toni passed up a chance to reduce the deficit when he headed over after Cacciatore beat Yuto Nagatomo to whip in a superb cross from the right.

Inter thought they had a third in the 32th minute but Guarin waited too long in releasing his pass after driving at the Verona defence and Palacio was offside when he converted.

It appeared a costly error less than a minute later when Verona charged up the other end to reduce their arrears - Toni holding off a pair of challenges and playing in Martinho to finish emphatically.

But the two-goal advantage was restored before the break when the impressive Nagatomo cut in from the left to strike the post, Palacio helped the loose ball back towards goal and Cambiasso obliged with the net gaping.

Palacio stabbed home a long ball forward, only to be denied by the offside flag once more, and another of the game's familiar sights reared its head in the 56th minute.

A low corner to the near-post by Cambiasso was helped on by Palacio and Rolando was on hand to bundle home.

Mazzarri removed Palacio and Cambiasso as Inter looked to take the sting out of the game but Toni thought little of their plan, again making his physicality count before squaring for Romulo to drill a fine finish into the bottom corner.

But the hosts held on without any other major alarms to leapfrog their opponents and go fourth in the table, before the evening ended in bizarre circumstances when Moras and Inter substitute Ishak Belfodil were sent off after the final whistle following an altercation.

Sunderland 2-1 Newcastle: Borini stunner moves Black Cats off bottom

    333469hp2.jpg

Fabio Borini's late strike saw Sunderland beat rivals Newcastle 2-1 in the Tyne-Wear derby at the Stadium of Light on Sunday, lifting them off the foot of the Premier League table.

Steven Fletcher scored the first goal of the Gus Poyet era before Mathieu Debuchy tied the scores in the second half, but Borini grabbed all three points with a stunning long-range strike late on.

Poyet made four changes to the side beaten by Swansea. Andrea Dossena and Carlos Cuellar came into the defence, while striker Jozy Altidore replaced joint top-scorer Emanuele Giaccherini.

Youth product Paul Dummett replaced the suspended Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa in the heart of the visitors’ backline, with Fabricio Coloccini and Steven Taylor still absent through injury.

The hosts made a great start as Fletcher headed home his second goal of the season in the fifth minute; Adam Johnson and Sebastian Larsson worked a short corner routine and, when the former stood a ball up to the back post, Fletcher rose above Dummett and beat Krul from close range.

Newcastle failed to pose any real threat in the opening period and were reliant on long shots from Yohan Cabaye as their only moments of promise. The Frenchman fired his first effort over the crossbar and his second, a free kick, was easily held by Keiren Westwood.

Sunderland almost created a second goal midway through the half, but Fletcher saw his effort palmed away by Krul, though the Black Cats went into half-time with their hard-fought lead intact.

The introduction of Papiss Cisse at the break gave Newcastle more of an attacking threat, though, and 13 minutes into the second half they were level through Debuchy.

Cisse’s introduction released Hatem Ben Arfa and the Frenchman created the equaliser for his compatriot. Ben Arfa’s low cross appeared to evade everyone inside the penalty area, but Debuchy ghosted past Johnson to tap home at the back post.

Cabaye then went close to putting the visitors ahead just after the hour, but he saw his curling effort fly just wide of Westwood’s post, with the away team beginning to dictate proceedings.

In the 68th minute, Poyet decided to bring on Borini, a substitution which nearly paid immediate dividends; the Italian found space on the left of the penalty area and saw his low shot slip through the legs of Krul, only for the goalkeeper to react quickly and pounce on the ball.

However, Borini was not to be denied and, after Ameobi had drilled an effort wide from 20 yards, Sunderland launched their own attack, with the Liverpool loanee rounding off a flowing move to register his first goal for the club with a powerful drive.

The win, Sunderland's first of the Premier League campaign, lifts them above Crystal Palace and off the foot of the table.

Juventus 2-0 Genoa: Vidal and Tevez get champions back to winning ways

    333464hp2.jpg

First-half goals from Arturo Vidal and Carlos Tevez ensured Juventus got back to winning ways with a comfortable 2-0 win over Genoa on Sunday.

A controversial penalty call allowed Vidal to hand his side the lead from the spot after 23 minutes before Argentine striker Tevez latched on to Kwadwo Asamoah's pass to double the advantage before the break.

The visitors had Mattia Perin to thank in the second half for keeping the score respectable, but they struggled to muster meaningful chances of their own, allowing Antonio Conte's side to cruise to a morale-boosting win following recent defeats to Real Madrid and Fiorentina.

Genoa omitted Francelino Matuzalem from their starting XI after the midfielder was caught drink driving this week, while Leonardo Bonucci, Mauricio Isla and Kwadwo Asamoah returned to the Juventus line-up following their 2-1 Champions League defeat to Madrid.

Perin thwarted Paul Pogba in the 12th minute as the midfielder failed to get the ball out of his feet before Llorente's lofted follow-up was also saved.

His next stop from the same player was far more impressive – reacting to keep out a point-blank volley having palmed Tevez's right-wing centre towards the former Athletic Bilbao striker.

The crossbar came to Perin's rescue in the 19th minute as Vidal's crisply struck 25-yarder cannoned to safety.

Giorgio Chiellini then headed narrowly over from a corner and Genoa's laboured resistance was finally broken when Davide Biondin sent Asamoah tumbling in the area, although the contact appeared to be fractionally outside the box. Vidal dispatched the spot-kick emphatically.

Perin was called into action with another superb save three minutes later, this time denying Andrea Pirlo, who skilfully held off Thomas Manfredini to get a shot away.

Biondin was almost the Genoa villain again on the half-hour mark when he was needlessly dispossessed by Pogba, only for the ex-Manchester United man to shoot beyond the far post.

Tevez added the seemingly-inevitable second goal for Juve, shielding the ball from Juraj Kucka after collecting Asamoah's low cross and swivelling away from Sime Vrsaljko before drilling home a left-footed strike.

Genoa boss Gian Piero Gasperini made a double change at the interval, sending on Giannis Fetfatzidis and Moussa Konate in place of Luca Antonelli and Alberto Gilardino, while also altering his team's shape to match the host's 3-5-2 formation.

Juventus' forwards once again found Perin in inspired form as he beat away a venomous 52nd-minute drive from Tevez and touched over Llorente's first-time attempt from the rebound.

The match began to meander as Juventus sat comfortably on what they had and Genoa still failed to make any significant attacking impression.

Juve are now level on 22 points with second-placed Napoli and hot on the heels of leaders Roma, while Genoa sit just above the relegation zone with two wins from nine matches.
