Sunderland 1-0 Manchester City: Bardsley strike stuns Pellegrini's men

    339259hp2.jpg

Manchester City fell to a fourth consecutive 1-0 defeat at the Stadium of Light as
Sunderland secured their second win of the season.

Phil Bardsley was Sunderland's match-winner with his first Premier League goal of the season in the 21st minute. The defender perfectly placed a shot past Costel Pantilimon in the Manchester City goal, but Sunderland had to hang on to claim the victory.

Sergio Aguero saw a first-half header fly wide of goal, while substitute Jesus Navas had a chance blocked by Bardsley on the line.City pushed hard for an equaliser, penning the hosts inside their own half, but Micah Richards and Eden Dzeko were both denied by Vito Mannone.

The three points lift Sunderland to within two points of Stoke City in 18th position, while Manuel Pellegrini’s side lose further ground on the leaders.

Pellegrini made five changes from the Champions League win over CSKA Moscow, with three of the alterations coming in his back four.Wes Brown started his first Premier League game in 22 months for Sunderland, while Steven Fletcher and Sebastian Larsson both returned.

Despite an equal share of possession it was the hosts who had better of the early chances, but in the 18th minute they were lucky to see Larsson stay on the pitch after a mistimed challenge on Javi Garcia.

The tackle did not bring a card, but the Spaniard was withdrawn at half-time.
Three minutes later Poyet's side broke the deadlock through Bardsley.

The defender shrugged off the attentions of James Milner and Demichelis, who got in each other’s way on City’s right, and placed a composed finish into the far corner.Just after the half hour City had their first sight of goal through Sergio Aguero, but the Argentina international wasted a fantastic chance.

After being released by Samir Nasri on the left, Aleksandar Kolarov delivered a cross to the back post for the 25-year-old, yet he was unable to get his back-post header on target.

The visitors were denied an equaliser five minutes into the second half as Bardsley blocked a shot from Navas, who replaced Garcia, on the goalline.

Aguero rolled away from John O'Shea on the left and raced into the penalty area before rolling the ball back to Navas, but his shot was blocked by the chest of the defender.

City's dominance intensified in the closing stages but Richards saw a low shot from the edge of the penalty area stopped by Mannone, and substitute Dzeko's first effort was parried away by the Italian prior to a frantic finale that saw Sunderland hold on.

Chievo 0-0 AC Milan: Two sent off in bore draw

    339278hp2.jpg

AC Milan and Chievo both had men sent off in a bore 0-0 draw between the sides on Sunday.

Milan captain Riccardo Montolivo was sent off seven minutes from time before Sergio Pellisier saw red for the visitors in injury-time.

Robinho struck a post and Alessandro Matri went close for Milan in the second half but the stalemate means Massimiliano Allegri's side are now without a win in six games in all competitions.

The hosts were unchanged from last week's draw at Bologna, while Allegri made just one alteration from the side that lost in Barcelona in midweek as Alessandro Matri returned to the front line in place of Robinho.

After a quiet opening, Chievo were first to threaten in the 17th minute as Marcelo Estigarribia stung the palms of Christian Abbiati from 25 yards, before Bostjan Cesar fired wide when well placed following the resulting corner.

Milan's response was immediate, though, as home keeper Christian Puggioni had to move low to his left to smother Sulley Muntari's effort from distance after a surging run from the Ghanaian.

With chances at a premium in a scrappy first half, Andrea Poli wasted a good opportunity to break the deadlock for Milan three minutes before the break when he dragged his shot wide after being found by Matri inside the area.

Six minutes after the restart, the hosts spurned a golden opportunity to open the scoring.

Cyril Thereau's shot was parried by Abbiati and the rebound ran perfectly for Rigoni, who, from a slight angle, hit the side netting when presented with an open goal six yards out.

Puggioni was called into serious action for the first time on the hour mark. The goalkeeper beat away Urby Emanuelson's swerving long-range effort before diving full length to his left to keep out Philippe Mexes' volley from 20 yards.

The hosts had a goal disallowed for offside with 16 minutes remaining when Thereau poked the ball beyond Abbiati but the linesman had raised his flag, with replays suggesting he may have just been level with the last defender.

Once again Milan's response was swift, Poli firing wide from the edge of the area, before Robinho missed Milan's best chance of the game, as he struck the base of the post from 12 yards after being played in by Muntari.

Three minutes later Montolivo was dismissed for a second bookable offence after a challenge from behind on Perparim Hetemaj.

Despite their temporary numerical advantage, Matri fired another good chance wide a minute later before Pellissier saw red as Milan - and Allegri's - troubled season continued.

Tottenham 0-1 Newcastle: Remy on target as heroic Krul stifles Spurs

    339236hp2.jpg

Tim Krul's heroics denied Tottenham a place back in the Premier League's top four and helped Newcastle to a 1-0 win on Sunday.

The Dutchman was on fine form to deny Tottenham at regular intervals as Newcastle recorded their first away win over Spurs in five attempts, with Krul making 14 saves in total.

Loic Remy continued his fine form to put Newcastle ahead with just 13 minutes on the clock, latching on to Yoan Gouffran’s throughball before rounding Brad Friedel and slotting home his seventh league goal in as many appearances.

Roberto Soldado, Christian Eriksen and Paulinho were all frustrated by Krul in the first half before he continued his impressive performance after the break, with a spectacular double save among the highlights.

Andre Villas-Boas was forced to rest first-choice goalkeeper Hugo Lloris following the Frenchman's collision with Romelu Lukaku against Everton last weekend.

Friedel made his 450th Premier League outing in his place while Mousa Dembele was favoured over Sandro in midfield with Eriksen and Gylfi Sigurdsson retained after impressive Europa League showings against Sheriff on Thursday.

Alan Pardew's Newcastle were unchanged from their Premier League win over Chelsea last weekend, but welcomed back captain Fabricio Coloccini, who was among the substitutes. The home side made the brighter start and threatened after nine minutes when Soldado headed Eriksen's cross over the bar.

Remy then found himself through on goal but was thwarted by a last-ditch tackle from Vlad Chiriches before Yohan Cabaye was denied at close range by Friedel.
The visitors' brief spell of pressure was rewarded when Gouffran dispossessed Dembele and played in Remy, who sped away from Michael Dawson, beat Friedel and calmly finished.

The home side should have levelled five minutes later when Eriksen curled an inviting delivery across the Newcastle goalmouth, but no Spurs player was on hand to apply a finish.

Roberto Soldado's header was then tipped over by Krul just short of the half-hour mark before the Dutchman was again alert to deny Eriksen and Paulinho before the break.

Krul was again on hand to maintain his side's lead four minutes into the second half, denying Eriksen one-on-one with his left leg, with substitute Sandro driving wide soon after.

The Netherlands international continued to deny Tottenham, making a fine double save from Sigurdsson's free-kick and then Younes Kaboul's follow up, as Spurs continued to apply plenty of pressure.

Both Remy and strike partner Shola Ameobi were withdrawn as Pardew looked to shut up shop - a tactic that proved successful as the visitors denied Tottenham the chance of returning to the top four.

My future is up to Milan - Allegri

    339337_heroa.jpg

Massimiliano Allegri said his future was in the hands of the AC Milan hierarchy after watching his side draw 0-0 away to Chievo.Milan captain Riccardo Montolivo was sent off late on in the contest while Sergio Pellisier also saw red in injury-time for the hosts, at the end of a drab encounter.

The Rossoneri are now without a win in their last six games and have recorded just three victories from their opening 12 league matches, which has heaped more pressure on Allegri."I am the coach of the Milan," he told Sky Sport Italia.

"So if the club thinks this team needs another coach then they'll let me know. I look at what happens on the field."Robinho and Alessandro Matri both wasted good opportunities to give Milan victory and Allegri insisted he was satisfied with the display from his side.

"It was a good performance," he added."The lads played well, created a great deal and didn't allow many chances, which wasn't easy.

"We had Wednesday's game (the 3-1 Champions League defeat in Barcelona) in our legs and a situation that was difficult, but I could not have asked for more from my players."We needed to score, we didn't score, but if we had then the view of the overall performance would've changed.

"The lads created several scoring opportunities against a Chievo side that was clammed up into its own half, so I could not have expected more.

"When everyone gives their all, you cannot ask for more in terms of effort."

    Diego Lopez enjoying Casillas battle

    250072_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid goalkeeper Diego Lopez says he is enjoying his ongoing battle with Iker Casillas and insists the pair remain good friends.

The 32-year-old joined the club from Sevilla in January and has since displaced the Spain keeper and become Madrid's first choice between the posts, having firstly impressed Jose Mourinho last season and then Carlo Ancelotti this term.

Speaking to the club's official website he said: “I've known Iker since I was 18, for about 14 years, and I've always had a good relationship with him."It's wonderful to compete in this team with a keeper like Iker. We're both after the spot and we both give everything we have to play.”

“It's the manager that decides the rotation. He decides and we have to try to do our best with it. The most important thing is to be ready every day and train your hardest.”

Another hat-trick from Cristiano Ronaldo helped Madrid to a 5-1 win over Real Sociedad on Saturday and Lopez believes the squad are beginning to adapt to their new coach's philosophy.

“We knew that adopting Ancelotti's ideas was only going to be a question of time," he added."Little by little we're seeing the team that the boss wants and today, especially in the first half, we've taken another step towards what he's after.

“Ronaldo is incredible. Today we saw, once again, what a unique player he is. We're very lucky to have him here.”

Lopez has made 14 appearances so far this season, with Casillas featuring in all four of los Blancos' Champions League fixtures.

    Villas-Boas hails 'amazing' Krul display

    339267_heroa.jpg

Tottenham head coach Andre Villas-Boas hailed the man-of-the-match display from Tim Krul as Newcastle triumphed 1-0 at White Hart Lane on Sunday.

Spurs were defeated by Loic Remy's 13th minute goal but denied an equaliser by a fine performance from Krul, who made 14 saves over the course of the 90 minutes.

The Portuguese was disappointed in his team's first half showing but paid tribute to the Dutchman's heroics.

Villas-Boas told reporters: “It was difficult to take. We have to look at ourselves and recognise that our first half was very, very poor. That was the negative, the positive was that we reacted so strongly and I think that the result was unfair, particularly after the second half.

“Tim Krul was the difference. It was a good start by Newcastle and a poor start from ourselves. We responded with a good second half but that 45 minute advantage was the blow for us.

"Our disappointment comes from that but I still think if one of those opportunities had gone in we’d have won the game."

Newcastle raced out of the blocks, seizing the advantage as Yoan Gouffran threaded Remy in on goal for the only goal of the game and Villas-Boas was happy to concede that Alan Pardew's side deserved their lead.

He added: “We must give merit to the opponent. Sometimes things like this happen. Just going into the game you’re focused and do a good warm up and then things in the game don’t happen for you.

"The opponent is there and has merit, brighter start than us that gave them the 1-0 advantage that paid off for them. Merit for them as well but we were extremely unlucky today."

Spurs mustered 31 shots on goal and created a host of clear-cut chances, but Krul secured the three points for a Newcastle team on the up following their 2-0 victory over Chelsea last weekend.

“It was amazing [Krul's display], the decisive part of today’s game," Villas-Boas insisted.

"Last season he had a great game against us as well. He was the inspiration; he made the difference. With a bit more luck we would have found the finishing touch."

The result leaves Spurs in sixth position, while Newcastle move to within three points of the north Londoners in ninth place.

Paris Saint-Germain: Messi is too expensive

    187823_heroa.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has strongly rejected renewed reports linking the club with a move for Barcelona forward Lionel Messi.

During the summer les Parisiens were rumoured to be ready to match Messi’s reported €250 million buy-out clause in response to the Catalan’s public pursuit of captain Thiago Silva.

Al-Khelaifi was quoted in AS saying: “I haven’t spoken to Messi because I’m not interested. You would have to ask the Barça [resident (If he is available), not me.”
Since Qatar Sport Investment bought the club in 2011, PSG have spent
approximately €270 million on their playing squad, with Edinson Cavani the club's latest marquee signing over the summer.

But with one eye on Fifa’s financial fair play regulations, Al-Khelaifi stressed that Messi was too expensive for the club to consider.

He added: “I won’t pay what they say he’s worth. I’m a realist and that amount is unrealistic. I’m not thinking about the possibility at all.”

The 26-year-old ended a four-game goalscoring drought with two goals in the Blaugrana's 3-1 win over AC Milan in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Thiago Motta open to Paris Saint-Germain exit

    318382_heroa.jpg

Thiago Motta has refused to rule out the possibility of leaving Paris Saint-Germain amid rumoured interest from Juventus.

The Brazil-born midfielder joined the Ligue 1 outfit from Inter in January 2012 for a figure believed to be around €10 million and has since made 46 appearances for the club.

However, though negotiations over a new contract are said to be ongoing, Motta hinted that he could be tempted to leave the Parc des Princes if he was not guaranteed a significant role at the club, with Juventus said to be lining him up as a potential replacement for veteran playmaker Andrea Pirlo.

"I'm fine in Paris but I want to be seen as important," the 31-year-old was quoted by Tuttosport after his side's 3-1 win over Nice on Saturday. "If not, we'll look for an alternative solution."

Motta has been a regular feature in PSG's line-up this campaign, playing 15 times in all competitions and scoring twice in a 4-1 Champions League win over Olympiakos.

Ibrahimovic playing better than Ronaldo and Messi - Thiago Silva

    300362_heroa.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain defender Thiago Silva says he "loves" Zlatan Ibrahimovic and believes he deserves to win the Ballon d'Or over Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

The Brazilian has witnessed at first hand the brilliance of the Sweden international, firstly during their time together with AC Milan and now at the Parc des Princes.
And with voting for the prestigious prize set to close on November 15th, Silva has thrown his support behind the 32-year-old.

He told Sky Italia: “As a football fan I love Ibrahimovic. I’m sure that he will be in the top three for the Ballon d’or. It will be difficult for him to win but I think he deserves it as he is performing better than Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.”
Silva and Ibrahimovic left Milan to join PSG in the summer of 2012 and won the Ligue 1 title in their first year at the club. But with the Rossoneri struggling since their respective departures, the 29-year-old revealed his sorrow at the club's current plight.

He said: “It’s a difficult time for Milan, especially for those who run the club.
Galliani is undergoing a great deal of pressure, but it is not his fault, Milan are paying for mistakes they made in the past. I miss Galliani and the club, I’m so sorry to see them in this situation.”

PSG opened up a four-point gap over second-placed Lille with a 3-1 victory at home to Nice on Saturday.

:love:Manchester United 1-0 Arsenal: Van Persie on target as champions close gap on title-chasers

    339335hp2.jpg

Robin van Persie scored against his former club for the third game in a row as Manchester United edged Arsenal 1-0 at Old Trafford on Sunday.

It was no surprise that Van Persie was Arsenal's nemesis; the striker has now scored in the last five matches between the two teams and his 27th-minute header was responsible for deciding this encounter, inflicting a blow to the momentum Arsene Wenger's men have built up this term.

Neither side were at their best during the much-anticipated fixture and, although Arsenal improved after the break, they lacked cutting edge with Wayne Rooney going closest to scoring in the second half when he shot just wide.

One goal was enough for David Moyes' side, though, who are now unbeaten in nine matches. Arsenal however – who entered the match on the back of wins over Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund – failed to reinstate their five-point lead at the top of the Premier League.

Van Persie headlined Manchester United's four changes from their goalless draw against Real Sociedad on Wednesday, while Michael Carrick and Jonny Evans also came in after overcoming calf and back niggles.

A sickness bug forced Arsenal into two changes, Thomas Vermaelen and Mathieu Flamini coming in for Per Mertesacker and Tomas Rosicky, who were not even among the replacements.

Arsenal shaded a cagey opening in which United's Rooney was the only player to test a goalkeeper, albeit with a relatively tame effort from distance.

Van Persie breathed life into the contest, though, converting the first genuine chance of the game from a Rooney corner. The Netherlands star rose above Oliver Giroud and produced a soaring header that crashed into the top-right corner, too well-placed for Kieran Gibbs – who was on the line – to do anything about.

Arsenal were unable to muster a significant response before the break, but were thankful to see goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny emerge from a nasty clash of heads with Phil Jones in good health.

Manchester United were not so lucky, with defender Nemanja Vidic failing to return after being hit on the head by the hip of his own goalkeeper, David De Gea, on the stroke of half-time.

Arsenal improved after the break but struggled to create clear-cut chances, Mesut Ozil going closest when firing into the side-netting in the 58th minute.

Rooney nearly doubled United's lead on the hour mark after Arsenal's defence failed to clear a clever flick-on header from Shinji Kagawa, but, after feigning to shoot and creating space, the England star tugged his left-footed effort past the right post with Szczesny beaten.

A long-range effort from Gibbs tested De Gea when it took a late van Persie deflection while Chris Smalling failed to take advantage of a teasing cross from the goalscorer at the other end.

There was a late chance for Giroud, but his shot on the turn went wide as United held on for a crucial win that sees them rise to fifth in the table.

Betis 1-4 Barcelona: Blaugrana victory marred by Messi injury

    339484hp2.jpg

Barcelona swept aside Betis 4-1 on Sunday and go three points clear in La Liga, though the victory was marred by an early injury to Lionel Messi.

Messi was taken off in the 21st minute with a left hamstring problem and Barcelona subsequently confirmed he would undergo further tests on Monday, but the forward's exit had little effect on Gerardo Martino's side as they cruised to another comfortable victory.

Neymar opened the scoring in the 36th minute after combining with Cesc Fabregas, and Pedro finished a goal all of his own making a minute later.

Fabregas put the gloss on the scoreline with goals in the 63rd and 79th minutes, Jorge Molina's injury-time penalty no more than a consolation for Betis as Barcelona took advantage of Atletico Madrid's draw with Villarreal to extend the gap at the top of the table.

Both sides made a number of changes following midweek European games, the Betis team showing three changes and Barcelona bringing in six fresh faces.

The hosts started brightly, taking the game to their illustrious opponents and Victor Valdes pulled off two superb saves in the 17th minute.

First, the Spain international denied Molina from point-blank range after the striker had got free on the byline, before rushing along his line to push away Juan Carlos' firm downward header from six yards.

A difficult start was made more problematic for Barcelona when Messi was withdrawn in the 21st minute after picking up an ankle injury in the build up to Carlos' chance.

Neymar then wasted a good opportunity for the visitors, sending a free header straight at Guillermo Sara from Dani Alves' right-wing cross.

The Brazilian atoned for that miss after Alex Song had threaded an accurate ball through for Fabregas. The Spaniard squared for Neymar, who had the simplest task of tapping home into an empty net.

Ninety seconds later the leaders went two up as Pedro picked the ball up inside his own half, knocked it behind the entire Betis defence and curled an exquisite finish inside the far post.

Barcelona almost went three up a minute before half-time but Neymar's pass was slightly behind Pedro and the Spaniard scuffed his effort into the ground and off target.

Betis started the second half as brightly as they had the first, Joan Verdu sending an effort just wide from the edge of the box before Nono thumped the post with a rasping drive from 25 yards.

Barcelona responded strongly and Betis were indebted to Sara for a double save to deny Neymar as the Brazilian looked to put the result beyond doubt on the hour mark.

The visitors did not have to wait long for a third goal, Fabregas tapping home from six yards following sumptuous approach play involving Andres Iniesta and Martin Montoya.

Fabregas claimed the fourth 15 minutes later, nodding Alves' cross in off the post, before Molina sent Valdes the wrong way from the spot following a foul in the area by Alves.

Juventus 3-0 Napoli: Bianconeri narrow gap on Roma

    339431hp2.jpg

Juventus climbed above Napoli and to within one point of Serie A leaders Roma with a 3-0 victory over Rafa Benitez's men on Sunday.

Fernando Llorente's second-minute strike set the hosts on their way to a sixth consecutive home win, with Andrea Pirlo's sublime free-kick and a stunning Paul Pogba volley wrapping up the points after the break.

Angelo Ogbonna's late sending off took some shine off Juve's fourth league win on the bounce, but the defending champions now have the summit in their sights after securing second place outright.

For the visitors, the result ended their five-match winning run in all competitions as they failed to capitalise on Roma's draw with Sassuolo.

Juventus made two changes from the midweek draw against Real Madrid in the Champions League, while Napoli made three after beating Marseille in the same competition.

Both teams had won their three previous games but it was Antonio Conte's men who made the decisive start.

Pogba's bouncing shot was tipped behind by Pepe Reina and from the short corner, Arturo Vidal's shot was flicked on to Llorente by Carlos Tevez and the Spaniard made no mistake from close range after only two minutes.

It would have been two but for a tremendous save by Reina. Pirlo's deep cross was headed across by Pogba towards Leonardo Bonucci six yards out but his point-blank header was somehow saved by the goalkeeper and Napoli scrambled clear.

More than 20 minutes passed before Napoli registered a shot on target but Lorenzo Insigne's effort on the turn was easy for Gianluigi Buffon.

Insigne almost provided an equaliser after 32 minutes when he found space in the area but his left-foot drive whistled past the post, while Reina had to be alert to thwart Llorente's near-post header.

The back and forth contest almost swung in favour of Benitez’s team just before the break and again it was Insigne who provided the danger with a dipping long-range strike that landed on the roof of the net.

The early exchanges of the second half were dominated by Napoli and the impressive Insigne once again provided the main threat. His curling free-kick after 50 minutes had to be tipped wide by Buffon.

Napoli had only failed to score once in the league all season and Marek Hamsik went close after 63 minutes but lashed into the side netting from inside the area.

Pirlo added the second with typical finesse, the midfielder's inch-perfect free-kick flying into the top corner from 25 yards.

And the impressive Pogba got on the scoresheet after 80 minutes with a spectacular 30-yard volley.

Ogbonna's obstruction of Dries Mertens saw him dismissed for a second booking with seven minutes left, but Juventus were home and dry by then.
