Napoli 0-1 Parma: Late Cassano strike dents Partenopei's title hopes

    343262hp2.jpg

A fine finish from Antonio Cassano condemned Napoli to a surprise 1-0 home defeat to Parma on Saturday.

The veteran forward waltzed his way through the home defence before firing a precise shot into the bottom corner on 81 minutes to seal maximum points for the visitors at the San Paolo.

Chances were few and far between in a fiercely-contested opening period, with Gonzalo Higuain providing the first real test for Antonio Mirante as he hit a point-blank effort straight at the keeper's legs.

Jonathan Biabiany and Nicola Sansone came close for the visitors before Higuain was again denied by Mirante after good work from Pablo Armero.

Marco Parolo had Pepe Reina at full stretch shortly before the break, before the midfielder steered Mattia Cassani's cross wide just after the interval.

Lorenzo Insigne was denied by the alert Mirante and the game looked to be heading for a draw before Cassano intervened, running at the defence unchallenged before finishing in style past Reina.

Rafa Benitez's poor evening was compounded by injury to substitute Marek Hamsik, who could now be a doubt for Tuesday's crucial Champions League clash with Borussia Dortmund.

Napoli remain three points behind Juventus in second having played a game more, while Parma leapfrog AC Milan into 10th after the Rossoneri's draw with Genoa.

AC Milan 1-1 Genoa: Balotelli misses penalty as Rossoneri held by 10 men

    343250hp2.jpg

AC Milan's difficult campaign continued on Saturday evening as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Genoa at San Siro.

Kaka put the hosts ahead at the San Siro after four minutes, before former Milan striker Alberto Gilardino equalised from the spot.

Genoa had Thomas Manfredini dismissed for a tug on Mario Balotelli nine minutes from the break, but the striker failed to take advantage with the resulting penalty as his tame effort was saved.

Milan have not tasted victory in Serie A since October 19, while Genoa are now unbeaten in four.

Balotelli returned to Milan’s attack after a suspension, with Daniele Bonera making his first appearance of the season, replacing Philippe Mexes, who was injured in the warm-up. The visitors brought Mario Sampirisi and Davide Biondini in for Juraj Kucka and Isaac Cofie.

Sulley Muntari had the opening chance of the match for Milan after just three minutes, forcing Genoa goalkeeper Mattia Perin to unconvincingly fumble the ball wide from distance.

And the hosts were ahead a minute later when Kaka brought the ball down superbly form a pin-point Nigel de Jong pass before slotting under Perin from eight yards.

But Genoa were handed the opportunity to level matters after eight minutes when Urby Emanuelson carelessly tripped Sime Vrsaljko in his own area to concede a penalty.

Former Milan striker Gilardino made no mistake with the spot, firing it straight down the middle as Christian Abbiati dived to his right.

Balotelli attempted a spectacular effort midway through the half, controlling the ball with his chest before firing an overhead kick straight at Perin, and the former Manchester City striker looked dangerous throughout the opening 45 minutes.

Genoa's Thomas Manfredini was given his marching orders for hauling the 23-year-old to the ground in the penalty area after 36 minutes, but Balotelli was left red-faced as Perin outfoxed him to save his effort down the middle.

The miss was Balotelli's second in his career from 12 yards, although both have come this season.

Milan adopted a patient style of play at the beginning of the second half, but clear-cut chances were few and far between before De Jong fired straight at Perin from 20 yards after 58 minutes.

As the hosts began to turn the screw, Milan drew two superb saves from Perin – the first a tip over the crossbar from an Alessandro Matri header and the second low dive to his right to deny Kaka.

Genoa were riding out the storm, but only just. Valter Birsa had an effort tipped around the post by Perin 10 minutes from time, before Kaka fired an effort narrowly over the crossbar.

With time rapidly running out, Birsa headed agonisingly wide of the target and Cristian Zapata scuffed wide as Genoa clung on for a hard-fought point.

West Ham 0-3 Chelsea: Lampard haunts Hammers again

    343169hp2.jpg

A strikerless West Ham side threatened to pierce the Chelsea defence with as much ease as such a description would suggest on Saturday evening, as the visitors came away from Upton Park as 3-0 victors following the day's closing Premier League encounter.

Frank Lampard thundered in a 21st-minute penalty to open the scoring for Jose Mourinho's side, with his second goal, eight minutes before full-time, marking his fifth in as many appearances against his old club.

Those two strikes sandwiched Oscar's 34th-minute effort as Chelsea claimed their first Premier League win in three matches.

Lampard's penalty came after Guy Demel's underhit backpass let in Oscar, who was brought down by goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen, before Oscar himself made it two with a low effort from the edge of the box.

Lampard doubled his tally late on, converting from the edge of the box after Jaaskelainen parried Eden Hazard's shot, leaving West Ham without a win in five league matches.

Both sides made one change from their previous outings a fortnight ago, Joey O'Brien replacing the injured Razvan Rat for the hosts, while John Obi Mikel came in for Willian in the Chelsea midfield.

After a scrappy start to the game, the visitors were gifted the lead midway through the half.

Under no pressure, Demel's weak backpass towards Jaaskelainen was seized upon by Oscar, who went to ground under the goalkeeper's sliding challenge, referee Chris Foy showing no hesitation in pointing to the spot.

Lampard stepped up and smashed the kick high into the roof of the net to end his longest run without a league goal for Chelsea.

Thirteen minutes later Oscar tormented the hosts again, the Brazilian picking up Eden Hazard's clever flick before driving forward and rolling the ball into the bottom left-hand corner from 20 yards.

Jaaskelainen produced a fine save to deny Samuel Eto'o three minutes before the break, flying high to his left to parry the Cameroon international's curling shot behind.

Chelsea started the second half strongly, Gary Cahill seeing his header cleared off the line by Mark Noble in the 52nd minute before Oscar turned Cesar Azpilicueta's cross wide shortly afterwards.

The hosts ought to have reduced the deficit in the 64th minute when substitute Mohamed Diame jinked past three defenders on the byline before his deflected cross ran to fellow replacement Modibo Maiga, but the substitute turned the ball a foot wide of the post from six yards.

As the game entered its final 10 minutes, Hazard tested Jasskelainen from an angle and the rebound fell perfectly to Lampard who made no mistake with a first-time strike.

Demba Ba saw an injury-time goal chalked off for offside but the points were already in the bag for Chelsea, who move up to third in the Premier League, while West Ham are just one place above the relegation zone.

Almeria 0-5 Real Madrid: Ancelotti's men make light of Ronaldo injury blow

    343237hp2.jpg

Real Madrid claimed a 5-0 win over Almeria away from home on Saturday evening but it came at a cost as Cristiano Ronaldo limped off injured at the beginning of the second half.

Fresh from inspiring Portugal to World Cup play-off glory against Sweden with a phenomenal midweek hat-trick, Ronaldo gave Real an early lead with his 25th club goal of the campaign.

Karim Benzema marked his 200th Madrid appearance with a beautifully struck second before Gareth Bale, Isco and Alvaro Morata added deserved late gloss to the scoreline.

But Ronaldo provided the story of the second half nine minutes in, walking gingerly from the field with a suspected thigh problem after coming off second best in a challenge with Aleix Vidal and must be considered a doubt for the midweek Champions League match against Galatasaray.

Asier Illarramendi was selected in midfield for Madrid as a result of Sami Khedira's long-term knee injury absence, while Isco returned to the starting XI in support of the fearsome attacking trio of Ronaldo, Bale and Benzema.

Almeria coach Francisco Rodriguez welcomed back Verza from suspension and picked Helder Barbosa in place of Fernando Soriano as his team chased a fourth consecutive victory.

Ronaldo handed the visitors the lead when, having already seen a shot deflected behind, he supplied a deft touch to direct Isco's excellent right-wing cross low into the far corner after three minutes.

Home goalkeeper Andreas Esteban did superbly well to beat away a viciously swerving Ronaldo drive and was up quickly to block Benzema's follow-up.

Angel Trujillo denied Ronaldo with a superb last-ditch challenge in the 18th minute before Suso cut in from the left to curl a shot wide – Almeria's most promising attacking moment of a half they grew into.

Real full-back Daniel Carvajal raced into the area to collect Xabi Alonso's magnificent raking ball in the 50th minute but Esteban produced another fine stop before Ronaldo's match ended early.

Bale should have taken the edge off manager Carlo Ancelotti's concerns in the 57th minute when he blazed over from close range after Isco sent Carvajal marauding down the right.

Diego Lopez was forced into a sharp save of his own in the Madrid goal when Suso's low free-kick evaded the defensive wall but Benzema would hand the visitors breathing space after the hour.

Ronaldo's replacement Jese Rodriguez drove at the Almeria defence and fed Benzema, who shifted the ball on to his right foot to send a rasping 20-yard drive beyond Esteban.

    Bale
headed Alonso's 67th-minute corner over but capitalised on a lapse from Sebastian Dubarbier to find the net four minutes later.

Isco was the provider on that occasion and got the goal his endeavours deserved with a wonderful clipped finish from the edge of the are before Morata – on for Benzema – raced clear of an embattled Almeria backline to chip Esteban.

There was almost more late misery for the hosts when Casemiro crashed a 25-yard drive against the post before the final whistle confirmed a cut in Barcelona's advantage over their great rivals to six points.

Borussia Dortmund 0-3 Bayern Munich: Gotze leads champions to second-half rout

    343202hp2.jpg

Mario Gotze returned to haunt his old side as leaders Bayern Munich defeated Borussia Dortmund 3-0 at the Signal Iduna Park on Saturday.

The midfielder – who made the switch to reigning champions Bayern for a €37 million fee in the close-season – came off the bench to light up a tepid encounter between the title rivals and break the deadlock before Arjen Robben and Thomas Muller added late goals to produce a scoreline that flattered the visitors.

Both sides were missing key players for the fixture, with Dortmund particularly hindered with their regular back four all unavailable.

In a first half bereft of chances, Robert Lewandowski, who was also linked with Bayern in the transfer window, wasted the best opportunity when he fired over from close range.

Gotze's neat finish after 66 minutes finally brought the game to life before Robben and Muller also netted late on to extend Bayern's unbeaten Bundesliga record to 38 matches and open up a seven-point gap over Dortmund, last season's runners-up.

Jurgen Klopp handed a debut to centre-back Manuel Friedrich with Dortmund's usual back four missing from the starting XI. Franck Ribery was absent with a rib injury for Bayern, while Gotze was only named as a substitute against his former club.

Klopp's charges started brightly and Lewandowski should have hit the target when he fired his shot on the turn over the crossbar when unmarked in the area.

The hosts continued to look lively and Marco Reus broke clear of the defence shortly before the half-hour mark and stung the palms of Manuel Neuer with a left-foot strike.

Bayern had shown little going forward until good work on the left from Robben led to Mario Mandzukic's acrobatic effort being beaten away from Roman Weidenfeller.

The same combination then nearly handed the away side the lead against the run of play on 38 minutes, but Mandzukic failed to make clean contact with Robben's teasing cross into the six-yard area.

The first half came to an end in tempestuous circumstances as Mandzukic reacted angrily to a late challenge from Kevin Grosskreutz, with the latter lucky to avoid a red card when he appeared to aim a headbutt at the Croatian.

Neither side was able to put their stamp on the second half, until Pep Guardiola introduced Gotze to a chorus of boos from the home fans.

And the substitution paid dividends on 66 minutes when the Germany international controlled Thomas Muller's pass from the right and finished to the far corner with the outside of his boot to silence the jeers.

Dortmund pressed for an equaliser with Henrikh Mkhitaryan firing wide from close range and Reus' low drive forcing a superb reflex save from Neuer.

However, Bayern ended the game as a contest in the 85th minute when Robben broke clear of the Dortmund defence and applied a sublime chip over Weidenfeller.

And there was further cause for Bayern celebration just two minutes later. Robben sprayed the ball to Philipp Lahm and his centre was turned home by Muller as Bayern secured their first triumph in Dortmund since 2009.

    Ancelotti delighted with Alonso-Illarra partnership

    337259_heroa.jpg

Carlo Ancelotti hailed the performances of Asier Illarramendi and Xabi Alonso as Real Madrid ran out 5-0 winners at Almeria on Saturday.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, Gareth Bale, Isco and Alvaro Morata all struck to give los Blancostheir fourth consecutive Liga victory, but Ancelotti was particularly impressed with the defensive balance within the side offered by the two Spanish midfielders.

"I think it was a good game. It was important not to concede goals, and the whole team played well together," the coach told reporters after the match.

"It's important to have a template that the players have no difficulty playing with each other. Illarramendi and Xabi [Alonso] played very well. The team was balanced thanks to these two.

"We only lost a little control in the last 15 minutes of the first half when we played a bit slower, but those are small details. Today was a different game and I think we should be happy."

Illarramendi and Isco returned to the fold following Sami Khedira's season-ending injury while Jese Rodriguez, Casemiro and Alvaro Morata impressed in second-half cameos.

And Ancelotti was generous in his praise of the side's youngsters, adding: "Illarramendi has worked well for two weeks and was in good condition like Isco, who also worked well.

"Our young players have a lot of quality. Casemiro can replace Khedira in the line-up because they share similar charactheristics.

"They are young and will show that they are ready to play for Real Madrid."

Mourinho: It’s in Lampard’s DNA to score, he had nothing to prove to me

    343165_heroa.jpg

Jose Mourinho was full of praise for midfielders Frank Lampard and Oscar following Chelsea’s 3-0 victory at West Ham.

Lampard, who came into the fixture in his worst goalscoring draught in a decade, opened the scoring after the Brazilian Oscar had been fouled in the penalty area, following a mistake by full-back Guy Demel.

The England veteran would cap the victory late in the second half, and Mourinho dismissed claims that he needed to deliver a performance of this calibre.

"I think he's in a moment where he has nothing to prove, to you, to the fans, to me. He has nothing to prove," spoke the Chelsea boss.

"I was his manager in the best moment of his career, probably, and now I'm back for the final years. He must enjoy what he likes to do, which is enjoy football. Scoring is part of his DNA.

"He played very, very well," Mourinho continued. "Another who was very comfortable on the pitch. He benefited from the protection offered from [John Obi] Mikel. After that, Lamps felt a bit more freedom to find theses shooting areas."

Sandwiched between Lampard’s strikes was an impeccable finish from Oscar. Collecting the ball from Hazard, the former Internacional man spun, held off James Collins, before placing the ball past Jaaskelainen with ease, an example, according to Mourinho, that embodies the midfielder’s talent.

"I think the same as you think," Mourinho responded, when asked how well he felt Oscar performed. "In the middle, on the sides, he works hard – he covers – and when he has the ball he's able to score.

"It's not easy to succeed in this country, especially when so fragile, but his talent is amazing."

The Chelsea boss admitted that the second half miss from Maiga proved a crucial moment in the match, insisting that "2-0 is never enough" against sides like West Ham. That said, he felt his side were more than worthy winners.

"The game was good for us, and it became very comfortable," he continued. "We deserved this, we were very comfortable in the game, and everyone in the ground would see it."

Defeat for West Ham prolongs their burden of the worst home record in the league. Speaking after the match, manager Sam Allardyce agreed that Chelsea were deserved winners, albeit having capitalised on his side’s shortcomings.

"We allowed them to be good after the goal. But today is one Chelsea deserved to win," said Allardyce.

"Sadly it was our defence which broke first. When you make a mistake like that, gifted them a goal. It was always difficult from then on.

"We're suffering in front of goal, and now we're suffering defensively. We play with one front man, we don't play with one front man. We play with two front men, we don't play with two front men.

"It doesn't matter what system we play," he continued. "At the minute, we're missing chances."

:(:(:(Manchester United handed Van Persie & Vidic blows

    332532_heroa.jpg

Manchester United have been dealt a double injury blow with both Robin van Persie and Nemanja Vidic set to miss Sunday’s Premier League clash with Cardiff City.

Vidic, who suffered concussion during the victory over Arsenal at Old Trafford a fortnight ago, trained with the first team on Saturday, as he had done all week, but will not be risked by David Moyes ahead of Wednesday’s testing Champions League visit to Leverkusen.

Van Persie, meanwhile, withdrew from the Holland squad ahead of last week's friendlies against Japan and Colombia, suffering with a combination of toe and groin injuries.

The former Arsenal striker was absent from United’s Carrington training complex on Saturday and did not travel with the rest of his team-mates who flew to the Welsh capital on Saturday evening.

The Premier League champions will also be without Phil Jones, who suffered a groin strain against Arsenal that subsequently ruled him out of England’s friendly defeats against Chile and Germany, while Michael Carrick is likely to miss the next six weeks with an Achilles injury.

Youngsters Will and Michael Keane, who between them have made just one Premier League appearance for the club, have been added to the matchday squad ahead of United's first ever trip to the Cardiff City Stadium.

Angry AC Milan fans force players to remain in San Siro

    343248_heroa.jpg

Angry AC Milan fans prevented the club's players from departing San Siro following the 1-1 draw with Genoa which leaves Massimiliano Allegri's outfit 11th in Serie A.

The Rossoneri went up 1-0 after only four minutes but were pegged back immediately by the dogged visitors, who survived a subsequent siege to their goal despite being a man down for the second period.

Supporters watched on as Allegri's men ran out of ideas to beat an inspired Mattia Perin, whose heroics between the Genoa posts included saving Mario Balotelli's 36th-minute penalty.

Club faithful from San Siro's Curva Sud section blockaded the stadium exits after full-time, demanding a personal audience with the team and Allegri over the side's state of affairs.

"These players don't know what sacrifice is. They have so much money, while people like us work hard for them," a spokesperson told reporters.

The Ultras had earlier unfurled a banner proclaiming "Let's meet by the exit you unworthy lot", prompting police to form a cordorn around the players' garage.

Balotelli voluntered to pacify them but was stopped by security personnel, so Kaka and goalkeeper Christian Abbiati went to meet a body of 300 fans in the striker's stead.

The pair spent three minutes in heated dialogue with the group outside the stadium grounds before being allowed back to the dressing rooms to widespread applause, with the situation apparently resolved.

"Things are not going well this year, but that happens to everybody. There's no need to overdramatize," club CEO Adriano Galliani appealed.

"I won't speak about the Curva Sud tonight. You need to be patient and stay calm. We will get back on track."

"I am eager to bring the team back to a good position in Serie A, continue in the Champions League and also the Coppa Italia," coach Allegri pleaded. "I have not run out of ideas yet, or I would have left.

"It's only natural there is bitterness that we are without a win in a month. In my three years at Milan we always did well, but things aren't going our way this season.

"Balotelli must stay calm, as penalties can be missed. He's scored so many penalties before, but unfortunately the last two he took were saved."

Milan are now without a win in their last seven matches in all competitions and sit 18 points behind leaders Roma in Serie A.

Guardiola: Bayern did well to shut Dortmund out

    338968_heroa.jpg

Pep Guardiola credited Bayern Munich's 3-0 victory against Borussia Dortmund on Saturday to a solid rearguard action, and was left delighted at the way in which his side handled Robert Lewandowksi.

The Bavarians were on the back foot for much of the initial period before Mario Gotze opened the floodgates against his former side at Signal Iduna Park in the second half.

And Guardiola believes die Roten's determined efforts to shut out Dortmund's danger men paid dividends before they could bring their own quality to bear later in the game.

"We are happy because we beat the best team at counterattacks in the world," the 42-year-old told reporters.

"We knew we had to control the first touches of [Robert] Lewandowski and [Henrikh] Mkhitaryan. If you let them run, they're unstoppable.

"Our first 15 minutes were good, the next 30 not so much. In the second half with Thiago [Alcantara], Gotze, [Philipp] Lahm and [Toni] Kroos, we played very well."

Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer likewise praised his team-mates' defensive attention, stating: "We always stayed calm and organised. We did not want Dortmund to catch us on the counter and we managed to do that well.

"The most important thing is that we won. And we won deservedly. We can go home relaxed now."

However, goal-scorer Arjen Robben believes the German champions' superiority was not as marked as the final score suggested.

"The 1-0 was very important, but we must not exaggerate," the Netherlands international said.

"It looks like a clear win, but for me it was an even match. At the end we had plenty of space and we took advantage of it very well."

The German champions have nevertheless opened up a seven-point gap between themselves and their fiercest title rivals at the top of the Bundesliga.

Arsenal boss Wenger delighted with progress of 'physical' Giroud after double against Southampton

    343151_heroa.jpg

Arsene Wenger hailed Olivier Giroud for embracing the physicality of English football after Arsenal beat Southampton on Saturday thanks to the French striker's brace.

Giroud hassled Artur Boruc into making a comical error before slotting into an empty net and wrapped up the victory with a penalty late on.

His second goal moved the striker into double figures for the season in all compeitions, with Wenger quick to point out that the France international's appetite for a physical encounter is a key factor in his side's ability to to play attractive football.

"Olivier is a positive character who is always ready for a battle and he is maybe a little bit completely different to the rest of the team, but he gives us so much with his physical presence, with his link play which he has improved tremendously," he said.

"He has the mental qualities... he has a positive attitude."

Wenger suggested prior to the win that the Gunners would not need to sign another striker to maintain their Premier League title challenge. And the Frenchman suggested a dearth of top-quality European-born forwards makes the progress of Giroud even more of a success story.

He added: "Europe produces still fantastic football players, but if you look well we don't produce in Europe any more strikers, or very few.

"All the big strikers today come from South America. You look at the summer period - you had Falcao going to Monaco [in a] big transfer, [Edinson] Cavani going to Paris Saint-Germain, [Luis] Suarez - everybody wanted to buy him. [Gonzalo] Higuain has gone to Naples [Napoli] for a lot of money.

"That's an area where in Europe it's very difficult to find because we produce less strikers.

"Even a country like Germany where I remember in every big club they had a big striker, they have produced fantastic players but they do not produce young strikers.

"Is that a consequence of the way we coach? Is that a consequence of modern life? I don't know."

Southampton boss Mauricio Pochettino meanwhile, said he would support Boruc '100 per cent' after his blunder allowed Arsenal to open the scoring.

"It's the way that we play," he said. "It's what I demand of him, I demand of all my players. That's the style that we play.

"There's nothing more that we can say. It's just a bad day, and it happens."

Ter Stegen would be great for Barcelona - Lehmann

    334179_heroa.jpg

Former Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann believes that fellow countryman Marc-Andre ter Stegen is capable of replacing current No.1 at Barcelona Victor Valdes.

Recently, the Borussia Monchengladbach shot-stopper, 21, has been linked with the Blaugrana following Valdes' decision to quit the club at the end of the season.

Barca have said they are interested in the Gladbach No.1 as well as Pepe Reina, who is currently on loan at Napoli from Liverpool, and Lehmann says Ter Stegen could be a good fit for Gerardo Martino's side despite lacking experience.

“Ter Stegen would be a great keeper for Barcelona” the 44-year-old said to Marca.

“Yes, he lacks experience. For example, he won’t go to the World Cup compared to [Manuel] Neuer, [Rene] Adler and [Roman] Weidenlfeller.

“However, the Spanish league is very adaptable and Barcelona’s game could do very well for him. I can see him playing there rather than in the Premier League.”

Ter Stegen, whose contract ends in June 2015, has started all 13 league games for fourth-placed Gladbach this season.

Lukaku sets sights on Champions League after derby brace

    343063_heroa.jpg

Everton's Romelu Lukaku sees no reason that his side cannot set their sights on Champions League qualification this season after the striker netted a brace in Saturday's 3-3 draw with rivals Liverpool.

The Belgian scored his sixth and seventh Premier League goals of the season in his first Merseyside derby as Everton looked to be on their way to a long-awaited victory over their local rivals, although a late equaliser ensured the points were shared.

"To play in the derby was such an honour and to two score two goals," Lukaku told BT Sport. "My team-mates helped me a lot. To help the team get back in the game, it was great. The pity was that we didn't win.

"It [Lukaku's second goal] was a great header. We worked a lot of set pieces, but it usually doesn't come off. Week after week I just try to improve. Every game in the Premier League is a big challenge.

"This year we have a great squad, a lot of experience and a lot of young players too. It's a good mix. Hopefully we'll end up very high in the league. Champions League - why not?"

Meanwhile, Toffees manager Roberto Martinez lamented his side's set-piece frailties after a late Daniel Sturridge header denied them the three points.

The hosts were denied a first Merseyside derby win since October 2010 thanks to Sturridge's conversion of a Steven Gerrard free-kick a minute from time at Goodison Park. Philippe Coutinho had previously opened the scoring following a Liverpool corner.

"The two teams played in the right manner, created a lot of chances," he said.

"But conceding two goals from set pieces is very disappointing. We were (trailing twice) when Liverpool didn't even have a shot on target (from open play).

"Overall I think we had the better chances, I think Liverpool got too big a reward from the game. But overall it was a fantastic football game."

Barcelona star Lionel Messi has revealed his admiration for Arsenal star Mesut Ozil, Bayern Munich's Arjen Robben and Robin van Persie of Manchester United.

Ozil and Messi clashed many times during the former's time at Real Madrid, while Robben helped the Bavarian outfit thrash the Catalans 7-0 on aggregate in last season's Champions League.

Van Persie, meanwhile, was part of the Arsenal side who sprung a surprise comeback on the Blaugrana in February 2011 and the 26-year-old Argentine is full of praise for all three players.

"Robin van Persie, Arjen Robben and Mesut Ozil are great players. Ozil is Germany's undisputed star. He's top class and incredibly creative," the Ballon d'Or holder told De Telegraaf.

"Van Persie is a very complete player. He is an all-round attacker who can score loads of goals. Robben is a class act as well, but a different type of player.

"He's very unpredictable. He's very quick with his dribbles and can leave several players behind him with one acceleration."
