Hull City 0-0 Stoke City: Toothless Tigers share points with Potters

    350723hp2.jpg

Goalkeepers Allan McGregor and Asmir Begovic were the stars of the show as Hull City and Stoke City battled out a 0-0 Premier League draw on Saturday.

Bosnia keeper Begovic made superb reaction saves from Ahmed Elmohamady and Yannick Sagbo in the first half to keep his side in the game, again denying the former Sunderland man after the break.Stoke ended the game on top, but found McGregor in equally impressive form as he twice denied Peter Crouch from point-blank range.

Either side could have moved into the top half with a win, but remain 12th and 13th respectively with a point apiece.

Steve Bruce's side were unchanged from Monday's draw at Swansea City, while Stoke handed starts to Stephen Ireland and Oussama Assaidi following goalscoring substitute appearances in their memorable win over Chelsea last weekend. The hosts were in the ascendancy from the off but could not find a way past Begovic.Elmohamady was the first to stretch the Bosnian with a dipping volley from 25 yards that the Stoke goalkeeper did well to tip over the crossbar.

The Egyptian was in fine form on the right as he surged past Marc Muniesa before cutting back to Sagbo, who touched the ball away from Ryan Shawcross and brought a smart stop from Begovic at his near post.

Curtis Davies saw a firm header fly wide and Tom Huddlestone drilled a long-ranger off target with 10 minutes to go in the half as Hull turned the screw, but saw their pressure amount to nothing.

Stoke ended the first period with their best spell, but only had a ball flashed across the face of goal from Marko Arnautovic to show for it as the sides went in at the break goalless.Jake Livermore pounced following some dithering in the Stoke defence early in the second half, but his left-footed effort bobbled wide and Shawcross flicked a right-wing corner wide in an open 10 minutes after the interval.

Elmohamady and Begovic renewed rivalries on the hour, the keeper making an excellent stop from the wing-back's firm header.

Livermore fizzed another effort from distance wide and the hosts had penalty appeals waved away as Sagbo's header flicked off Muniesa's elbow.

Ireland tucked home after Crouch had forced McGregor into a stunning save with 20 minutes to go, only to be denied by the offside flag.

McGregor again got down to his left quickly to keep Crouch out as Stoke entered the closing stages strongly, Shawcross nodding onto the bar from the resulting corner.

But neither side could find a killer blow as Stoke recorded a sixth consecutive away game in the league without a win, while Hull racked up a fifth clean sheet on home soil this season.

Stade Rennais 1-3 Paris Saint-Germain: Blanc's men bounce back

    350689hp2.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain tightened their hold on top spot in Ligue 1 with a comfortable 3-1 win over Rennes on Saturday.

The defending Ligue 1 champions went into the game having lost only one league game all season. And Laurent Blanc's men rarely looked in danger of succumbing to defeat at the Stade de Route de Lorient as the capital club clinched only their second win in 12 league visits to Rennes.

Midfielder Thiago Motta put PSG in front with a fine effort from distance before Zlatan Ibrahimovic doubled his side's advantage, the Swede taking his tally for the season to 22 with a second-half penalty.

Winger Romain Alessandrini did pull one back for the hosts, but Edinson Cavani added a third late on as PSG racked up a 13th league win of the season.

Ibrahimovic returned to Blanc's starting XI after being left out of PSG's 2-1 Champions League defeat against Benfica on Tuesday, while Jean-Armel Kana-Biyik replaced suspended former PSG centre-back Sylvain Armand in the Rennes defence.

The visitors started the brighter of the two sides, Ibrahimovic shooting just wide from a free-kick in the opening stages.

PSG duly took the lead with an opener in spectacular fashion after 19 minutes when Motta curled a wonderful strike into the bottom corner.

Blanc's men dictated the play in an opening period of few chances, although Rennes remained a threat on the counter-attack, with Kana-Biyik heading wide from a corner just after the half-hour mark.

Kana-Biyik narrowly missed the target again minutes before half-time as they pushed for the equaliser.

But the Brittany club's task was made considerably harder shortly after the interval when Ibrahimovic converted from 12 yards following Cedric Hountondji's foul on Blaise Matuidi.

PSG dominated proceedings throughout, although Rennes were given hope after 67 minutes, Alessandrini's low free-kick flying under Salvatore Sirigu and into the bottom corner.

The hosts, however, were never able to exert any sustained pressure on PSG, whose victory was confirmed in the final minute of injury time as Cavani powered a shot past Benoit Costil following a quick counterattack.

Blanc's PSG are now likely to head into the mid-season break as league leaders as they bid to follow in the footsteps of the likes of Lyon and Marseille by winning back-to-back top-flight titles in France.

West Ham 0-0 Sunderland: Dire draw for relegation battlers

    350640hp2.jpg

Sunderland's lack of penetration again proved costly in a 0-0 Premier League draw at fellow strugglers West Ham that does little for either side.

The division's bottom club went into Saturday's game having failed to score away from home since August 31 and, despite enjoying the better of a largely drab encounter at Upton Park, the Black Cats were once again unable to find the target and remain without a win on the road this season.

Phil Bardsley rattled the crossbar from distance in the first half for Gus Poyet's men, while West Ham offered next to nothing as an attacking threat, much to the frustration of their supporters.

The London club have now mustered just one victory in nine league games and remain perilously placed above the relegation zone.

Ravel Morrison and Joe Cole replaced the suspended Kevin Nolan and injured Stewart Downing in West Ham's line-up, while Poyet handed recalls to Lee Cattermole, Emanuele Giaccherini and Fabio Borini.

The powerful Mohamed Diame proved an early threat for Sam Allardyce's side, yet it was Sunderland who should have taken the lead after six minutes. Jozy Altidore found himself one-on-one with Jussi Jaaskelainen but the forward's low strike across goal was tipped wide.

West Ham had the ball in the net through Guy Demel after 21 minutes, only for the effort to be disallowed, with referee Andre Marriner having already blown up for a push.

After a brief spell of home pressure, Sunderland saw Fabio Borini break clear and shoot straight at Jaaskelainen from a tight angle when a cross to Altidore appeared the better option.

A penalty appeal from Altidore was then turned down, the American having tumbled as a left-wing cross came over, before Bardsley came agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock, hitting the crossbar with a thunderous effort from 30 yards.

Sunderland were firmly on top by the time that the first half ended to a chorus of boos.

West Ham finally forced Vito Mannone into action 10 minutes after the interval but the Italian goalkeeper dealt comfortably with Morrison's drilled shot.

The visitors continued to look the more likely to break the deadlock either side of Diame directing an effort on the turn straight at Mannone.

Ki Sung-Yueng forced Jaaskelainen into action at his near post with Sunderland's clearest opportunity of the second period, while Morrison fired wide at the other end with five minutes remaining.

Mannone was on hand to tip George McCartney's goalbound cross over in stoppage time and both sides will know that improvement is required if they are to pull away from the league's lower reaches.

Newcastle 1-1 Southampton: Rodriguez secures point for Saints

    350673hp2.jpg

Southampton claimed their first Premier League point at St James's Park since 2001 with a 1-1 draw against Newcastle on Saturday.

Jay Rodriguez's seventh goal in all competitions this season cancelled out a first-half opener from Yoan Gouffran, the Frenchman's fourth strike in his last four home matches.

Both sides had chances to win it in a very open second half, with Loic Remy guilty of spurning a glorious one-on-one opportunity late on.

Ultimately, however, Southampton saw their winless league run extended to five games, while the hosts were denied a sixth victory in their last seven top-flight fixtures.

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew, facing his former club, was without the suspended Yohan Cabaye, who picked up his fifth booking of the campaign before scoring the winner against Manchester United last time out, with Shola Ameobi coming in.

Mauricio Pochettino selected defender Jos Hooiveld in place of Jose Fonte, while midfielder Adam Lallana was surprisingly dropped to the bench alongside Morgan Schneiderlin, returning from a groin injury.

Newcastle made most of the early running and Mathieu Debuchy flashed a volley from the edge of the box narrowly wide after five minutes. The home side should have taken the lead six minutes later when Gouffran beat Paulo Gazzaniga to the ball and cut it back for Remy but the striker's close-range effort was cleared off the line by Calum Chambers.

The pressure finally told in the 27th minute as Southampton failed to defend a free kick from the halfway line and Gouffran pounced on Mike Williamson's flick-on to sidestep the goalkeeper and roll home his fifth league goal of the season from six yards out.

A rare Southampton attack late in the half forced a corner that Tim Krul punched clear as Newcastle went into the break with their lead intact.

Pochettino made two changes at the interval, with Lallana replacing Daniel Osvaldo and Schneiderlin coming on for James Ward-Prowse, and the visitors looked more threatening initially, Rodriguez scuffing a volley wide after latching on to Rickie Lambert's lofted pass.

Remy saw a low long-range effort well kept out at the other end, with strike partner Ameobi heading well wide from a corner in the 57th minute.

Steven Davis hit the post with a fine volley from range just after the hour mark but Newcastle failed to heed the warning.

Rodriguez broke from just inside the hosts' half and played a one-two with Davis before rolling the equaliser past Krul in the 65th minute.

Huge chances went begging at both ends within a minute, as first Lambert failed to get enough power in his close-range header and then Remy blasted high and wide when he had only Gazzaniga to beat, the keeper having given it straight to him.

Referee Mike Jones required some treatment in the closing stages after Moussa Sissoko accidentally struck him in the face and tensions flared between both benches late on in a dramatic finish to the game both on and off the pitch.

Cardiff City 1-0 West Brom: Whittingham winner gets Bluebirds back on track

    350672hp2.jpg

Cardiff City snapped a five-game winless streak with a hard-fought 1-0 success over West Brom in the Premier League on Saturday.

Both sides came into the game short of form, resulting in a scrappy first half devoid of chances and quality at the Cardiff City Stadium.

However, the hosts seized the initiative after the break and took the lead through Peter Whittingham's excellent header from a fine cross by Craig Noone - starting in the Premier League for the first time.West Brom saw strong appeals for a penalty turned down as they sought an equaliser, but remain with just one away win to their name all season - September's memorable triumph at Manchester United.

Cardiff made three changes from last week's defeat at Crystal Palace, including the recall of Peter Odemwingie against his former club, while West Brom reinstated Jonas Olsson and Shane Long to their side.

After Boaz Myhill tipped Whittingham's free-kick away, Gary Medel lashed an effort over the crossbar as the hosts settled into the game quickly, but the opening period was characterised by sloppy possession from both sides with neither goalkeeper fully tested.Steven Caulker slashed wide from close range after Olsson failed to deal with a corner, while the former Tottenham defender had to be alert to deny Gareth McAuley from Chris Brunt's swirling set-piece.

The heavens opened during the half-time break, making conditions tricky, but Cardiff began the second period strongly and Odemwingie blasted over as West Brom dithered on the edge of their own box.

The visitors had a superb chance to score in the 56th minute as Morgan Amalfitano squared to Claudio Yacob, whose mis-hit fell kindly for McAuley, but the Northern Ireland defender was denied on the line by a combination of Medel and keeper David Marshall.

Cardiff then broke the deadlock on 65 minutes, Noone swinging a great ball in from the right and Whittingham directing his header beyond Myhill. Both teams saw penalty appeals waved away by referee Howard Webb, with West Brom particularly aggrieved as Shane Long was bundled over in the penalty area by Ben Turner.

Substitutes Scott Sinclair - jeered onto the pitch as a former Swansea City player - and Saido Berahino combined well out wide with the latter's cross somehow evading colleagues in the box.And West Brom threatened again soon after, McAuley heading across the face of goal, before Marshall rescued the result with a magnificent reaction save to keep out Long's firm header.

The win moves Cardiff four points clear of the relegation zone, and above West Brom - who have now lost four successive matches.

Everton 4-1 Fulham: Rampant Toffees remain in top-four contention

    350617hp2.jpg

Rene Meulensteen's first away game in charge of Fulham ended in a heavy 4-1 defeat at Everton on Saturday.

Meulensteen's men, who ended a six-game Premier League losing streak by beating Aston Villa last week, reacted superbly after being overrun in the first half and deservedly cancelled out Leon Osman's early opener with a Dimitar Berbatov penalty midway through the second period.

However, the Londoners were level for just six minutes as Seamus Coleman put the hosts back ahead after 73 minutes, before Gareth Barry and substitute Kevin Mirallas put gloss on the scoreline with late goals.

The result - which extends Everton's unbeaten home run in the Premier League to 17 games - moves Roberto Martinez's side up to fourth, while Fulham remain in the relegation zone. Everton controlled the early exchanges and their first real opportunity came when Phil Jagielka glanced a Steven Pienaar corner wide.

However, Martinez's men did not have to wait long for their dominance to be rewarded and Osman broke the deadlock after 18 minutes following a slick passing move.

Bryan Oviedo and Pienaar combined well down the left before the South African fed Osman on the edge of the area.

The 32-year-old first shaped to shoot with his right foot, before cutting back onto his left and bending a cultured effort past Maarten Stekelenburg to mark his 300th top-flight appearance in style.

Everton were buoyant after going ahead, with Gerard Deulofeu becoming increasingly influential down the right.

The Barcelona loanee - rewarded with a start after coming off the bench to score Everton's equaliser at Arsenal last week - beat John Arne Riise with ease before firing a low delivery across the six-yard box that just eluded Romelu Lukaku in the 21st minute.

Lukaku then went even closer to doubling the home side's advantage when Barry's header deflected off him from close range, only for Stekelenburg to pull off a superb reaction save.

Everton continued to probe for a second before the break, with Stekelenburg again called into action just after the half-hour mark to deny Coleman.

Martinez's side failed to maintain their tempo and fluency immediately after the interval, though, and were fortunate to stay in front when Alex Kacaniklic spurned a golden chance four minutes into the second half.

Tim Howard could only palm Steve Sidwell's long-range effort straight at Kacaniklic, but the Sweden international somehow contrived to shoot over from six yards with the goal at his mercy.

Fulham's confidence was visibly boosted by Everton's low-key start to the second period, and Berbatov deservedly brought them level from the spot after 66 minutes shortly after Deulofeu was withdrawn due to a hamstring injury.

Referee Anthony Taylor awarded the penalty after Barry had clumsily collided with Kacaniklic inside the area, and Berbatov stepped up to coolly send Howard the wrong way.

Despite the visitors looking the more likely to go ahead, Everton's first slick passing move of the second period resulted in Coleman restoring their advantage.

Sharp interplay between Pienaar and Lukaku down the left ended with Stekelenburg palming the South African's cross straight into the path of Coleman, who had the easy task of tapping in his third goal of the season.

And Everton sealed the points five minutes from time when Barry nudged home from two yards after Fulham failed to deal with a corner, before Mirallas - who came on for Deulofeu - got in on the act in injury time.
