Sunderland 2-1 Manchester United: Borini penalty hands Black Cats first-leg advantage

    357064hp2.jpg

Fabio Borini's second-half penalty helped Sunderland to a 2-1 win over Manchester United in the first leg of their Capital One Cup semi-final, leaving David Moyes' hopes of silverware in doubt.

The visitors saw Ryan Giggs smash the crossbar from range while Adnan Januzaj had a goal ruled out for offside in the first half, but it was Gus Poyet's men who took the lead in stoppage time of the first period as United's veteran Welshman bundled the ball into his own net.

The Red Devils responded immediately after the restart, Nemanja Vidic levelling the scores from a corner, but when Tom Cleverley felled substitute Adam Johnson inside the box, Liverpool loanee Borini was able to restore the hosts' lead from the penalty spot.

Both teams made seven changes, with Marcos Alonso making his debut for Sunderland, while United named a strong line-up that included Patrice Evra, Michael Carrick and Vidic.

The hosts enjoyed the majority of possession in the opening exchanges and had the first glimpse of goal on 12 minutes with Borini's scuffed effort.

United began to settle into the match with Januzaj looking particularly threatening, and Moyes’ side went agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock when Giggs’ deflected strike rattled the crossbar after 25 minutes.

The visitors also thought their pressure had told on 38 minutes when Januzaj fired home after initially striking against Giggs, but the linesman ruled the latter was offside when he blocked the ball.

And United’s failure to take their chances counted against them on the stroke of half-time as Wes Brown knocked Sebastian Larsson's free kick across the six-yard box where Giggs, sliding in to challenge former United team-mate Phil Bardsley, inadvertently applied the final touch from close range.

It did not take long for United to restore parity after the break, however, as Vidic leapt highest to head home Cleverley's whipped corner on 51 minutes.

But, rather than building on their equaliser, it was Sunderland who came closest to regaining the lead on 62 minutes when Larsson's volley was parried to safety by David de Gea.

Three minutes later, Poyet's side did move ahead when Johnson - who had replaced Emanuele Giaccherini from the bench - was the victim of a clumsy tackle by Cleverley in the area and Borini blasted the resulting penalty into the roof of the net.

With 20 minutes remaining, the lively Januzaj almost levelled with a bending effort that curled wide of Vito Mannone's far post.

United piled on the pressure in the closing stages with Januzaj twice coming close and an effort from Evra just evading the far post, but Sunderland withstood the barrage to ensure they will take a lead to Old Trafford in the second leg on January 22.

Valencia 1-1 Atletico Madrid: Postiga makes amends after Guaita howler

    357087hp2.jpg

Valencia secured a dramatic 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid thanks to a last-gasp Helder Postiga equaliser after Raul Garcia had given the visitors the lead thanks to a howler from Vicente Guaita.

Guaita punched a corner back across goal to allow Garcia to head home midway through the second half, as Diego Simeone's side looked set to edge a tight encounter and secure a first-leg advantage.

However, Postia popped up in stoppage time to turn home Sofiane Feghouli's cross and ensure they take a well-earned level scoreline back to the Vicente Calderon for the second leg of the last-16 tie.

Both sides made a number of changes from last weekend's Liga action. Joao Pereira, Andres Guardado, Javi Fuego, Michel and Fede Cartabia and came in for Valencia, while Vicente Guaita got the nod in goal, while Atletico gave a rare start to midfielder Joshua Guilavogui.

Valencia created the first opening of an even first 20 minutes, with Miranda blocking Bernat's effort after Michel's cross, before the full-back then fired a shot wide.

Raul Garcia was then thwarted by Guaita in Atletico's best opening, with the goalkeeper saving superbly after Adrian teed up the midfielder.

Valencia dominated possession but chances remained at a premium for the remainder of the half until the brink of the whistle, when Diego Costa raced clear on the counter thanks to Adrian's pass only for Ricardo Costa to block his effort.

Thibaut Courtois was called into action shortly after the break, diving low to keep out Fede's effort from 20 yards.

Chances remained few and far between, with Valencia unable to find a breakthrough while Atletico waited for the opportunity to counter, but the deadlock was finally broken on 72 minutes.

Guaita made a bizarre mess of an attempted punch from a corner, succeeding only in diverting the ball back across goal to Garcia, who headed into the top corner from point-blank range.

Diego Costa then went into the referee's notebook for diving after going down under a challenge from Ricardo Costa in the penalty are before any contact was made.

Valencia spurned a golden opportunity to draw level when Courtois parried Pablo Piatti's effort out to Canales, but the midfielder failed to get over the ball and turned the rebound over the bar.

Courtois then pulled off another stunning stop to deny Feghouli, who bustled his way past three challenges only to see his fierce effort beaten out.

Atletico remained resolute and looked to have ensured the win until injury time, when Postiga burst onto Feghouli's cut-back to head the ball into the unguarded net for a richly-deserved equaliser which sets up a mouthwatering second leg in the capital.

Xavi: I may not retire at Barcelona

    257032_heroa.jpg

Xavi has hinted that he may transfer away from Barcelona before he retires, claiming it will be "difficult" to stay at Camp Nou.

The midfielder, who turns 34 later this month, has a contract with the Catalans until the summer of 2016 and has already made 22 appearances this season.

Though he insists he would like to stay at Barca until the end of his playing days, Xavi thinks that it will be tough to remain in the Liga champions' first team plans as his illustrious career draws to a close.

"It's difficult to finish your career here," the Spain veteran told Panenka Magazine. "I don't know if I will end it at Barca. I'd like to, but I don't know what will happen.

"I feel good physically, better even than in the last two seasons. I don't want to miss any games and sometimes that can affect you. I have to give myself a little bit more rest now.

"I am happy playing for Barca because of our philosophy. Perhaps I could have been happy playing for another club, I don't know, but my priority has always been Barca."

Xavi also spoke about the possibility of becoming a coach and, though he refused to commit himself to the idea of taking charge of a club in future, he laughed off the notion that he would exit the world of football upon hanging up his boots.

"I don't know if I will be a coach because I am still playing and I haven't stopped to think about it yet," he added. "But I like football a lot and I will stay linked to it. What on earth would I do otherwise - become an economist?"

Simeone: Courtois as good as ever

    354231_heroa.jpg

Diego Simeone paid tribute to the consistency of on-loan goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois after the Belgian put in a fine performance in Atletico Madrid's 1-1 Copa del Rey draw with Valencia.

Raul Garcia put the visitors in front in the first-leg quarter-final and Courtois pulled off some smart saves - most notably from Sofiane Feghouli - to keep his side in the ascenancy until Helder Postiga headed in a dramatic late equaliser.

Simeone was thrilled with the young shot-stopper's showing, both on Tuesday and in the season as a whole, and admitted he was delighted with his side's efforts against a revitalised Che outfit.

"Valencia were brave and attacked us. We defended with pride and courage. We put in a huge effort. The result is important and the tie is now at 50-50 for each team," Simeone told reporters after the match.

"It's true that, after the goal, Valencia had two or three clear chances which our keeper did very well to save.

"Courtois played at his usual, very good level, and Raul Garcia is a great player.

"I'm proud of my players' commitment in all competitions, it's hugely valuable."

Simeone was impressed by the performance of Valencia under new coach Juan Antonio Pizzi and backed los Che to be fighting for one of the four Champions League places come the end of the season.

"Valencia have very good footballers. They are a great team and they should be fighting for third spot," he added.

Man Utd laughing at 'terrible' refereeing, says Moyes

Manchester United manager David Moyes says the team are "laughing" at "terrible" recent refereeing following their 2-1 loss to Sunderland on Tuesday.

The Red Devils went behind thanks to a Ryan Giggs own goal before Nemanja Vidic equalised just after half-time in the first leg of their Capital One Cup semi-final.

However, the hosts were awarded a penalty after Tom Cleverley felled Adam Johnson with Fabio Borini converting from the spot to seal the win.

Speaking after the game, the United boss criticised the officials and said his team did not deserve to lose at the Stadium of Light.

"It is difficult we just need to keep going," he told reporters. "We didn't do a lot wrong. I thought the referee was going to blow in our direction for the first goal. I couldn't believe he gave a free kick. It was a terrible decision.

"We are all just laughing at them at the minute. We get a player booked for doing the same. It looks as though we are having to play them [officials] as well as the opposition at the moment.

"I thought the players, our crowd were unbelievable, the players deserved to get a result. It's a two legged game and I am really looking forward to the second leg."

Moyes also took time out to praise the travelling supporters and says he can understand their frustrations after watching the team lose for a third consecutive match.

"They were brilliant tonight and I would like to thank them all. They supported me and the team," he added.

"The fans know we’re going through a difficult time and have probably not seen it as bad as this for a long time.

"But I’m determined to put it right and I’m sure we will. I sense that [determination] in the dressing room as well."

The second leg of the Capital One Cup semi-final takes place at Old Trafford on Wednesday 22 January.

England boss Hodgson bemoans Walcott injury

    357011_heroa.jpg

England manager Roy Hodgson has expressed sympathy Theo Walcott after the forward was ruled out for six months with ligament damage.

The Arsenal man ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament of his left knee in Saturday's 2-0 FA Cup third-round win over Tottenham and will not feature again this campaign.

Walcott will also miss the World Cup in Brazil, once again denying him the chance to shine on the world's biggest stage after failing to make the field in 2006 and not being included in the 2010 squad.

Hodgson has backed the attacker to come back strongly, however, having overcome a complicated abdominal issue already this term.

"I spoke with Theo and just wanted to express my disappointment to him," Hodgson told the FA's official website.

"It is a blow for him personally of course, and for both Arsenal and England.

"We had quite a lengthy conversation and it is such a shame that we have lost a player of his calibre for the World Cup, he has been incredibly unfortunate and we wish him a speedy recovery.

"Having worked with him for two years as England manager I know the character he has, and I know he will come back even stronger from this setback."

Shaqiri: No player thinks twice about joining Bayern

    293744_heroa.jpg

Bayer Munich midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri believes no player can turn down the chance to join the club after Robert Lewandowski signed a deal to move in the summer.

The Borussia Dortmund striker penned a five-year contract and will join on a free transfer at the end of the season, following former BVB team-mate Mario Gotze's move to the Allianz Arena, and Shaqiri is thrilled to see a player of the Poland international's calibre set to join.

"I think it's great that Lewandowski's coming to us. His qualities are indisputable. He'll help us to win even more titles," the Swiss winger told TZ.

"Nobody [can reject Bayern], especially not now. We play successful football and we have won many titles, which makes Bayern even more attractive. No player thinks twice about it."

Shaqiri went on to insists the club do not follow a transfer method aimed at simply weakening their closest rivals.

"You can't see it as a strategy. The club will carry on making new transfers. I don't think other clubs are jealous," he said.

"They will go on their way and Bayern will try to assemble the best team. But no one can be surprised the best players come to us."

Shaqiri also highlighted the slight differences in approach between Pep Guardiola and previous coach Jupp Heynckes and says die Roten are determined to become the first side to defend the Champions League since it changed from the European Cup.

"It's exhausting, but in a different way," he said of working under Guardiola. "Like last year, our goal is to win as much as possible this year. The primary goal is the Bundesliga and the cup, and then you look at the Champions League, too.

"Still no club have managed to defend it, so it's a great incentive for us this year."

Di Maria apologises as Real Madrid open investigation

    356806_heroa.jpg

Angel Di Maria has apologised to Real Madrid and its supporters as the club confirm they will investigate his "gesture" during Monday's 3-0 win over Celta.

The Argentina international grasped his groin as he was substituted, prompting fevered speculation that he was aiming an insult at either the crowd - some of whom booed him from the pitch for his performance - or coach Carlo Ancelotti.

Di Maria protested after the match that he was not making any sort of derogatory gesture and has now offered an apology to anyone who viewed the incident as such, with the club confirming they will look into the matter to see if any disciplinary proceedings should be required.

"I made a natural gesture when I was leaving. I did not do anything to the crowd, nor to the coach. It was a natural gesture that any man makes, especially when running," Di Maria, 25, told Real Madrid TV. "You do it on the pitch lots of times.

"If there is anyone who was made to feel bad then I apologise, but as I said, it was a natural gesture meant for no one. On TV, all you see is a millisecond. It's nothing.

"It's not that I stayed a long time to do something on purpose. It was something natural. For the people who feel bad for what I did, then I apologise, but it wasn't anything against anyone."

Di Maria added that he fully supported the club's investigation as he looks to clarify the incident.

"It seems right, not only for them to analyse it but for me to explain the situation and what happened," he said.

"I think it's good to talk to them directly and explain what happened on the pitch, as I have already done to several Argentine radio stations."

Speculation has mounted that the player, already linked with a move away from Santiago Bernabeu after finding himself playing second fiddle to summer signing Gareth Bale, could be edging further to the exit door after the incident.

However, the former Benfica man insists he is more than happy with life at the club.

"The truth is, I'm fine, apart from this issue, which makes me feel bad because of all the things that have been said and keep being said," he added. "I am very well and very happy. I still work in the same way and the coach relies on me.

"We have to continue like this, working, to get to the end of the year in the best way and in order to get the titles we want."

I'm staying at AC Milan, insists Balotelli

    348499_heroa.jpg

Mario Balotelli has rubbished reports that he could leave AC Milan during the January transfer window.

There have been reports that the Rossoneri are considering cashing in on their most prized asset, with the club forced to issue a statement last month denying that owner Silvio Berlusconi had tired of the Italy international's propensity for making headlines on and off the pitch.

However, Balotelli, who has been linked with a reunion with former Inter boss Jose Mourinho at Chelsea, insists that there is no chance of him leaving San Siro this month.

"I am staying at Milan," the striker is quoted by Chi. "I have to get ready for the World Cup and stay calm."

The 23-year-old Balotelli has netted six times in 13 Serie A appearances for Milan so far this season.

    Marseille reject Napoli's €12m offer for N'Koulou

    356971_heroa.jpg

Olympique de Marseille have turned down an offer in excess of €12millon from Napoli for defender Nicolas N'Koulou, president Vincent Labrune has revealed.

The Partenopei had been linked with a move for the 23-year-old since the back end of 2013 and have now returned with another bid for the Cameroon international.

However, the Ligue 1 club are reluctant to allow one of their most prized assets to depart the Stade Velodrome for the money on offer.

Speaking to RMC, Labrune said: "We had an offer from Napoli in mid-December, which was for more than €12millon, and was not acted upon. There is little chance of him going."

N'Koulou has been an ever-present in the league for Marseille this term and he also started five matches of their unsuccessful bid to progress from the Champions League group stages.

:(Vidic unlikely to extend Manchester United deal, says agent

    339343_heroa.jpg

Nemanja Vidic is unlikely to extend his Manchester United deal, according to the centre-half's agent.

The 32-year-old, whose current contract is set to expire at the end of the season, has struggled with form and fitness this season - making just 13 Premier League appearances.

Vidic's agent, Silvano Martina, does not expect his client to pen fresh terms at Old Trafford and insists the Serb has already attracted interest from a number of other clubs.

"At the moment, I would rule out an extension with Manchester United," he told Radio Crc.

"Vidic, given his contract situation, has several teams looking at him. Vidic is a very good player and will have no trouble finding a new club. For the time being we are remaining calm."

When questioned on speculation surrounding a switch to Napoli, Martina denied any concrete interest on behalf of the Serie A side.

"At the moment there has been no contact," he stated.

"But thanks to the management of [President Aurelio] De Laurentiis and [sporting director Riccardo] Bigon, they are one of the best clubs in Europe."

Bayern legend Matthaus hails Lewandowski signing

    276417_heroa.jpg

Lothar Matthaus has hailed the recruitment policy of Bayern Munich following the European champions' announcement of the signing of Robert Lewandowski.

The Poland international will join up with Pep Guardiola's side once his Borussia Dortmund contract expires during the summer, with the 25-year-old following in the footsteps of Mario Gotze in swapping Signal Iduna Park for the Allianz Arena.

The switch looks set to cement Bayern's position as the dominant force in the Bundesliga, prompting Matthaus to praise the club's recent transfer activity.

"The Lewandowski move is a king transfer for Bayern," the former Germany captain told reporters. "But every transfer they have made over the past two or three years has been very useful.

"Previously, there were a couple of bad investments, but since then the purchasing policy has changed and all arrivals have either had experience of the Bundesliga or the coach has specifically asked for them."

Matthaus also believes that the Lewandowski capture will cause further deterioration in the relationship between Bayern and Dortmund.

"Too much has happened with Lewandowski, Gotze and other disputes between the two clubs," he conceded. "The relationship is professional and co-operative but far from super."
