Roma 3-1 Atalanta: Totti returns inspires Giallorossi to victory

    390023hp2.jpg

Francesco Totti returned to inspire Roma to a 3-1 win over Atalanta that leaves the capital club in the Serie A title race.

Shorn of the in-form Mattia Destro through suspension, the Giallorossi's captain made a timely and welcome to return to the starting line-up as Roma cut Juventus' lead at the top to five points.

The home side were fast out of the blocks as Andrea Consigli twice denied Gervinho before Rodrigo Taddei made it 1-0 with just 12 minutes gone.

Dodo's ball across the edge of the box found the midfielder 18 yards out and his strike took a deflection on its way into the back of the net.

Rudi Garcia's men were in cruise control and confirmed their dominance by doubling their advantage just before the half-time break.

A swift counter-attack saw the ball break to Totti and he produced a delightful chipped pass over the top of the back four, which Daniele De Rossi diverted into the path of Adem Ljajic to sweep home from eight yards.

That goal effectively ended the game as a contest and Gervinho rubbed salt into Atalanta wounds just past the hour mark when he beat Consigli from 20 yards with a fierce effort.

To their credit, the visitors did pull a goal back through Giulio Migliaccio's strike with 11 minutes remaining but there was to be no late rally as Roma saw out a deserved win.

Manchester United plan final round of Evra contract talks

    388916_heroa.jpg

Manchester United plan to sit down with Patrice Evra next week for a final round of contract talks, Goal understands.

The France international left-back is out of contract in the summer, with United planning to offer a slight increase on his £85,000-a-week deal with the promise of an annual rolling review in an attempt to convince him to stay.

David Moyes's pursuit of Everton defender Leighton Baines last summer appeared to suggest that the Scot did not see a long-term future for the 32-year-old at Old Trafford.

But with Baines deciding to commit his future to the Merseysiders by signing a new deal back in January, the former Everton boss has seemingly had a change of heart and wants Evra to remain at the club.

A United source told Goal: "Moyes is keen to keep Evra beyond the summer but, out of respect for his service to the club, will not stand in his way should he decide that he doesn't want to extend his current deal.

"And despite what has been portrayed in the media, Evra's team-mates remain convinced that he wants to stay and help Moyes through this difficult period in charge of the club."

Goal understands that Inter remain favourites to sign Evra, while Monaco retain an interest in bringing the defender back to France as they continue to build a squad capable of challenging for honours domestically and in Europe.

Should the Frenchman decide to stay at Old Trafford, United's pursuit of Southampton sensation Luke Shaw could have a significant impact on how regularly Moyes uses the 32-year-old next season.

The north west club are expected to be party to a three-way battle to sign the England World Cup hopeful in the summer, with Manchester City and Chelsea also keen on the defender.

Evra, who scored a sensational goal in the Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich, has made 30 league appearances for United this season although his agent's insistence that "things have changed" at the club has done little to reassure supporters that he is planning to stay put.

Real Madrid 4-0 Almeria: Bale and Isco on target as Blancos storm back into title contention

    390003hp2.jpg

Real Madrid took advantage of Barcelona's slip-up to storm back into the La Liga title race with a 4-0 win over Almeria.

Barcelona suffered a surprise loss at Granada earlier in the day, meaning Real – who went second in the table with the win – pulled level on points with city rivals Atletico Madrid, who visit Getafe on Sunday.Star man Cristiano Ronaldo was once again sidelined with a knee injury but it did not hamper Real, who made light of the Portuguese star's absence.

Angel Di Maria scored a 28th-minute opener and alongside Gareth Bale, who scored just after the break, played a starring role in the victory that extended Almeria's losing run on the road to eight matches.

Isco and Alvaro Morata wrapped up the win with further second-half goals as Madrid breathed life into their title bid, despite consecutive defeats to Barcelona and Sevilla late last month.

Almeria forward Jonathan Sundy Zongo headed over from an early corner but Real soon hit their stride as Di Maria thudded a 25-yard drive against the crossbar in the fifth minute.

Di Maria seemed determined to find the scoresheet in memorable fashion and Almeria goalkeeper Esteban Suarez saved well as the midfielder struck twice more from outside the penalty area in quick succession.Karim Benzema then lofted a shot over from Bale's 12th-minute cut-back on the end of a blistering run down the left flank.

Bale opted to go it alone midway through the half, cutting in past two challenges to draw another fine save from Esteban, but Di Maria would eventually have his ambition rewarded. The Argentina midfielder exchanged passes with Nacho to engineer space in the box and finished off by arrowing an angled left-footed shot into the far left-corner.

A tangle between Zongo and Fabio Coentrao in the Almeria penalty area then went unpunished by referee Juan Martinez before Bale and Benzema shot wide in the closing moments of a half where the scoreline flattered Francisco's team.Bale doubled Real's lead eight minutes into the second half, drilling low past Esteban after Benzema and Di Maria linked smoothly.

Benzema was involved again three minutes later, sending a searching cross from the right for Isco to control and whip past Esteban at his near post.

Coentrao was denied a fourth by Esteban, while Benzema failed to adjust his feet in time to convert Nacho's cross and claim the goal his endeavours deserved.Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti removed Bale with 20 minutes remaining and his replacement Alvaro Morata converted a lifted pass from Asier Illarramendi to complete the scoring with five minutes left.

Rennes 0-1 Monaco: Champions League in sight for Ranieri's men

    389935hp2.jpg

A solitary strike from Emmanuel Riviere gave Monaco a hard-fought 1-0 win away to Rennes on Saturday night.

The home side had the best chance of the first half when Jean Makoun blasted over the bar unmarked 12 yards out.

Monaco responded with chances of their own as Joao Moutinho went close from distance, while Riviere was denied by Benoit Costil.

The visitors continued to threaten as the first half drew to a close, and Rennes again had Costil to thank for keeping out an effort from Layvin Kurzawa.

But Claudio Ranieri's Champions League-chasing side weren't to be denied after the interval and Riviere duly broke the deadlock on 55 minutes.

Jeremy Toulalan picked the striker out, with the 24-year-old finishing well into the bottom left hand corner to make it 1-0 to Monaco.

The visitors nearly doubled their advantage late on when Geoffrey Kondogbia's long range effort was clawed away by the impressive Costil, but in the end a single goal proved enough to seal victory.

Wenger vows to finish above Everton & seal fourth spot

    389933_heroa.jpg

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes he will guide his team to a fourth-place finish ahead of rivals Everton.

The Gunners boss watched his side come from a goal down against Wigan to seal their place in the FA Cup final after triumphing 4-2 on penalties.

And Wenger quickly switched his attention to the Premier League where his side were overtaken by Everton on Saturday after their 1-0 win at Newcastle.

Arsenal now trail the Toffees by two points, with both sides playing 33 matches, but the Frenchman was bold in his assertion that they can reclaim a top four position.

Speaking to reporters at Wembley, the Frenchman stated: "If we win our remaining games I think we will finish in front of Everton so we need to focus on the Premier League now."

The Gunners continue to chase their first piece of silverware in nine years and an FA Cup final against Hull or Sheffield United lies in wait for Wenger who was unsurprised by Wigan's quality on Saturday.

He added: "We're feeling relieved because we were under pressure but I expected a difficult game.

"The difference between winning and losing is very small and this game has shown it again."

Wenger reserved special praise for goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski - who looks increasingly likely to leave the north Londoners in the summer - after a matchwinning display in the shoot-out.

"Fabianski has shown what a good goalkeeper he is today," Wenger said. "He put us in a good position in the penalty shootout."

    Ancelotti surprised by Barcelona slip-up

    385329_heroa.jpg

Carlo Ancelotti admitted he was "surprised" at hearing of Barcelona's 1-0 defeat to struggling Granada prior to Real Madrid's 4-0 thumping of Almeria on Saturday.

The Catalans lost for a second time in a week, on the back of their Champions League quarter-final exit, with Madrid taking advantage in ruthless fashion to breathe new life into their title bid.

Goals from Angel Di Maria, Gareth Bale, Isco and Alvaro Morata moved los Blancos level on points with Atletico Madrid, who play on Sunday, with Ancelotti predicting more twists and turns ahead.

He told reporters after the game: "I was a little surprised by Barcelona's defeat, but everyone is fighting for their goals at the moment.

"Barcelona believe they can still win the league. There will be many surprises and they will fight until the end."

Madrid will hope to heap more misery on Barca when the two sides meet in the Copa del Rey final on Wednesday night, though Ancelotti is not convinced Saturday's results will have an impact on the game.

"The Italian also gave an update on the fitness of Sergio Ramos - who was missing from the matchday squad completely on Saturday - and Cristiano Ronaldo.

"I don't think Barcelona's defeat will have an impact on the Copa del Rey final," he added.

"I think Ramos will be able to play on Wednesday. He had a neck problem but should be back. Cristiano still depends on how he progresses. Marcelo won't play."

Barcelona should have won - Martino

    389950_heroa.jpg

Gerardo Martino was insistent Barcelona did more than enough to win after their 1-0 defeat to La Liga strugglers Granada handed the title intitiative to Atletico and Real Madrid.

The Catalans had 86% of the possession but spurned a number of openings, with Yacine Brahimi's first half strike the difference between the two sides on Saturday evening.

The result leaves Atletico a point clear at the top of La Liga ahead of their clash with Getafe on Sunday, while Real Madrid will move a point clear of the Blaugrana with victory over Almeria.

Martino said: "Liga lost? It is out of our hands now, of course. But we will keep fighting. I can't blame the players, they kept going, we had the chances but just couldn't finish.

"We'll keep on fighting until the end and of course in the Copa del Rey final on Wednesday as well."

Javier Mascherano partnered Alex Song at centre-back, with Carles Puyol and Gerard Pique both absent through injury, and the Argentine echoed the sentiments of Martino in backing Barca to bounce back.

"We have to get up now and show we're men," he added. "On Wednesday we cannot fail, we have to give ourselves and the fans some joy.

"We didn't play a bad game today, we worked hard but the ball just didn't want to go in."

Mertesacker hails Arsenal character after FA Cup triumph

    389910_heroa.jpg

Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker lavished praise on his team-mates following the Gunners' FA Cup semi-final penalty win over Wigan.

The Gunners were strong favourites for the tie with Uwe Rosler's Championship side but fell behind to a Jordi Gomez penalty - conceded following a foul on Callum McManaman by Mertesacker.

The Germany international made amends though, equalising late in the second half with a deft header to push the game to extra time.

After a goalless additional half an hour, Arsenal converted all four of their spot-kicks to book a place in the Wembley final.

And Mertesacker, when asked by ITV if the win was down to the team's mental strength, said: "Yeah I think so because of the second half.

"First half we were a bit timid, couldn't get through enough, but second half I think we hit the post twice and had a couple of good chances so it was a good comeback.

"I think we have great character. A lot of people have questioned that recently but our comeback today, we proved a lot. Now we want to win it."

Arsene Wenger and his side now await the winner of Hull and Sheffield United, who play on Sunday, for the Wembley final on May 17.
