Media questions Pep after Bayern loss

    germannewspapers20140430_576x324.jpg

The German media questioned the role of Pep Guardiola as Bayern Munich’s defence of their Champions League trophy ended with a 4-0 home defeat to Real Madrid.

Having lost the first leg 1-0 at the Bernabeu, Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge had said Munich would be “on fire” for the return game at the Allianz Arena, but two early Sergio Ramos headers, followed by a Cristiano Ronaldo brace, saw the Bundesliga champions exit with a 5-0 aggregate defeat.

Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, in an article headlined “Surreal evening for Guardiola’s Bayern,” wrote: “It was a historic day for the most famous football club in the world: Real’s first win at Munich. It was also historic for Germany’s most famous club: The highest home defeat for Bayern in any European competition ever. Their last 4-0 defeat, away to Barcelona and under Jurgen Klinsmann, set the way for major changes at the club.”Guardiola, whose tactics were questioned after the first leg, bore the brunt of the criticism for Bayern’s meek exit.

The broadsheet Die Welt -- writing under the headline “Bayern exit bears the hallmarks of Guardiola” -- said the former Barcelona coach had seen his “highly-praised tactic” exposed by Madrid.“In the match for which he had planned so much, Guardiola’s tactics had no bite. It was a humiliation at home,” the paper added, calling the result “one of his most bitter defeats.”

Munich tabloid tz was similarly unimpressed. “Over and done with,” it said. “Real Madrid throw a confused Bayern Munich off European football's throne.”Bayern had developed the nickname “Bestia Negra” (“Black Beast”) in Madrid for their record against Real, but Munich-based broadsheet Sueddeutsche said the German side were “without a chance against the white beast” on Tuesday night.

Questions had been raised over Guardiola’s decision to field Philipp Lahm in a midfield role for the first 66 minutes of the first leg, and the Germany international was moved back into defence at the Allianz Arena, while Thomas Mueller was brought into midfield. However, that was the only change, and Sueddeutsche argued that the coach was ultimately seeking to vindicate his tactics in Madrid.

The paper said: “Through that lineup, Guardiola planned to demonstrate that he -- the possession exponent -- had already chosen the right strategy in the first leg. It was a lineup full of conviction in his ideas, in their superior value. Guardiola made a mistake.”

Bild, Germany’s biggest tabloid, called the defeat “a disgrace for Guardiola” and “embarrassing,” pointing the finger at the coach for making such frequent changes to his starting XI, and said something has been missing at the club since president Uli Hoeness was found guilty of tax evasion in March.

The mood in Spain was very different as Madrid booked their place in the Lisbon final on May 24 to close in on “La Decima,” their long-awaited 10th European title.AS’ front page was headlined “Munich burns” and joked that “Rummenigge was right,” referring to the Bayern CEO’s prematch warning.

Marca’s front page featured Madrid players’ celebrating, with the line: “And now to Lisbon...” The paper celebrated the historic result, noting that it was “in Germany, and at Bayern, where they had never won, against the reigning champions, in the Champions League semis, and against Guardiola.”

AS editor Alfredo Relano, who has witnessed many of Madrid’s previous 10 attempts without success to win in Munich, described the joy and relief Madrid fans felt.

“What a night!” Relano wrote. “The best of Madrid in Europe that I can remember -- a night to bury for once and for all the spectre of Bayern, to wash away so many bad times against the Bavarian colossus. I have spent the whole Champions League campaign thinking that Madrid, Barca and Atletico would last only until they met each other or Bayern but, when the moment came, Madrid have ‘given them a bath’ with an unimaginable superiority.”

Thoughts now turn to the “Decima,” with Madrid not having reached the final since being crowned European champions for the ninth time in 2002. In El Pais, Faustino Saez recalled the long wait for the trophy, and said Carlo Ancelotti has already come closer to achieving the feat than predecessor Jose Mourinho.

“On May 24, in the Estadio Da Luz, Madrid will end a 12-year absence from the final,” Saez wrote. “Madrid have been on a journey through the desert. With Mourinho on the bench they fell three times in a row in the semifinals. Ancelotti crossed the border at his first attempt.”

Mazzarri will decide Guarin's future - agent

    397962_heroa.jpg

Inter and coach Walter Mazzarri will be "the ones to decide" Fredy Guarin's future at San Siro, the player's agent has stressed.

The Colombia international was close to sealing a switch to Juventus in January as part of a swap deal involving Bianconeri forward Mirko Vucinic until club owner Erick Thohir pulled the plug on the transfer at the last minute.Guarin, who has since extended his contract with the club, has maintained he is not looking to leave the Nerazzurri, but his representative has made it clear that Mazzarri and the club will ultimately have the final say on his client's future at Appiano Gentile.

“Fredy is calm and always gives 100 per cent,” Marcelo Ferreyra told Calciomercato.com. “He wants to help Inter secure qualification for Europe.
“The fact the World Cup is approaching is also another reason for him to give his best.

“We will see what happens in the future. Inter and Walter Mazzarri will be the ones who decide.”

Mathieu: We'll reach the Europa League final for Alcacer

    397937_heroa.jpg

Valencia defender Jeremy Mathieu has vowed to reach the Europa League final in honour of suspended striker Paco Alcacer.

The 20-year-old attacker was booked in his side's 2-0 defeat to Sevilla in the semi-final first leg, after a coming together with goalkeeper Beto, although replays showed there was no contact between the players.

Valencia's appeal over the decision was rejected by Uefa, meaning Alcacer must sit out the return at Mestalla, and Mathieu is determined to ensure that his young colleague will have one more appearance in this season's tournament - in next month's final in Turin.

"What happened to Paco is tough for everyone. We'll make even more of an effort so he can play in the final. It's a big blow for the team," Mathieu told Marca.

Valencia pulled off a stunning comeback to beat Basel in the previous round, but Mathieu has warned that his old boss Unai Emery boasts a far better side than the Swiss champions."Sevilla are stronger than Basel. You have to believe in us, I believe we can do it. I think we have to play an intense game, but a very intelligent one," he said.

"Sometimes you depend on the referee because, if you put your arms around them, they can earn a penalty. We've talked about this a lot in the dressing room and one of the best antidotes is to avoid silly fouls in the area.

"We'll try to make sure Unai doesn't win and that Sevilla don't reach the final. The truth is, when I played for Unai, it was inexplicable why every important game went against him. I hope there's a repeat on Thursday."

Juventus don't fear Benfica, insists Conte

    397919_heroa.jpg

Juventus coach Antonio Conte is confident his side can beat Benfica and reach the Europa League final, insisting that they are not scared of their opponents.

The Bianconeri head into Thursday's second-leg looking to overturn a 2-1 deficit and set up a showdown with either Valencia or Sevilla.Conte is sure his side can get the better of the recently-crowned Portuguese champions, arguing that they deserved more from last week's trip to Lisbon.

"We know what we need to do. I'm very confident," he told reporters. "I know we'll have Juventus Stadium behind us."The word 'fear' isn't part of our vocabulary. We know we deserve to be in a European semi; it's an exciting moment.

"We deserve to be in a semi-final; it's a great moment for us and we're enjoying it. Our fans deserve it."I don’t rank games in terms of their importance. We have the objective of winning every encounter we’re involved in.

"Benfica played very much on the counterattack in the first leg and we need to watch out for this on Thursday night.

"The result from the first leg doesn't tell the true story, but we know we're up against a strong side."I think we put in a fine display in Lisbon. It’s not easy, particularly psychologically, when you concede after two minutes."I think there was only one team in it during the second half that could have, with greater precision, scored more."

Conte added that star striker Carlos Tevez, who bagged Juve's crucial away goal at the Estadio da Luz, is likely to start Thursday's game, but wouldn't say if Arturo Vidal will be fit enough to feature.

"Tevez is an extraordinary player who has brought us personality and charisma," the 44-year-old trainer enthused. "When things start to heat up, he needs to play.
"Vidal has trained today [Wednesday], you'll find out whether he'll be in the starting line-up or on the bench tomorrow."Defender Giorgio Chiellini says he is "convinced" the Bianconeri can progress beyond Benfica, but admitted that they cannot afford to concede a goal.

"We’re solely focused on tomorrow’s game," he said, dismissing the suggestion that they could be distracted by the prospect of clinching a third successive Serie A title this weekend.

"It will be difficult but we want to win. I can’t wait to be involved in such a magical night. It will be fundamental for us to keep a clean sheet."I’m convinced we have what it takes to score, but we’ll need to try and cut out the errors made in the first leg.

"We can keep living the dream of playing the Europa League final in Turin."

Jesus: Benfica must score against Juve

    397907_heroa.jpg

Benfica coach Jorge Jesus believes his team must score against Juventus in the Europa League semi-final second-leg to ensure they reach the final. The Portuguese champions recorded a 2-1 win over Antonio Conte's men in the first-leg and travel to Turin to conclude the tie on Thursday.

Jesus insists his team must score at least once in the Juventus Stadium but admitted the Bianconeri will provide them with a difficult test.

"Our approach will be discussed in the dressing room," he told reporters. "We know it's a difficult game against a very strong team. "Our advantage won't change what we're about and how we line up for the game.

"We believe we need a goal tomorrow and have players who can allow us to think about playing an attacking game.

"We don’t often play teams with tactics like Juve’s. We may have to take certain measures to counteract them going forward."Benfica midfielder Ruben Amorim says he is confident his side can deal with the Italian giants, insisting they know what to expect from them.

"Our strategy won’t change, we don’t know how to play in another way. We’ve done our homework and know what’s required."It’s a complicated game but we’ve prepared as we do for every other encounter."

El Shaarawy hopes to play in Milan derby

    397902_heroa.jpg

AC Milan forward Stephan El Shaarawy hopes he can feature in Sunday's derby with Inter as he returns from injury. The Italy international has featured in just three games since September after being dogged by a problematic foot injury.

However, with Milan still in with an outside chance of securing a Europa League spot, the 21-year-old says he is fit enough for a cameo in Sunday's Derby della Madonnina. He also revealed his frustration at seeing the injury come back during December's Champions League meeting with Ajax.

Asked by La Gazzetta dello Sport on his prospects for the weekend's game, he said: "I hope to play in that match. I don't have 90 minutes in my legs, but 20 or 30 in the second half would be possible.

"I want to help out in getting to the Europa League. It's been tough being stuck at home. The worst day was during the Ajax game when the injury came back. After taking a shot I could feel that it had gone and then it was time for therapy.

"Two months of inaction, then the conservative therapy didn't work, so I lost another four months that I wouldn't have lost if I'd had the operation."People have said a lot of things about me and some of them have hurt. Maybe that's the other side of popularity, you can’t please everyone."

Despite his lack of match action this season, El Shaarawy was invited to an Italy training camp by coach Cesare Prandelli earlier this year. The former Genoa man harbours hopes of gaining a place in Prandelli's World Cup squad but knows he must start to perform regularly for his club to do so.

"I know it won't be easy to get a place on the plane for Brazil and I don't have much time but I do have a clear objective in my head," he added.

"Do well with Milan and get back playing for Italy. I want to show everyone, including Prandelli, that I'm in good shape. I'll be doing everything possible."

New Everton stadium receives council support

    368871_heroa.jpg

Liverpool City Council has again vowed to support Everton with their proposed move to a new stadium.

The Premier League club are planning to leave Goodison Park and play their home games in a 50,000-seater stadium at a site that will also include new homes, education and health facilities.

Walton Hall Park is reportedly the preferred location, but the club have refused to confirm that is the case and Everton chief executive Robert Elstone said he has seen "signs" the council are supporting the project.

A statement from Liverpool City Council read: "Following reports in the media today, we wish to reaffirm our commitment to working with Everton FC in relation to their new stadium proposals.

"As with all large-scale regeneration projects with the potential to create jobs and investment in Liverpool, the city council will look at ways it can support the wider regeneration scheme, but no firm options have been developed in terms of how or where this will take shape.

"This work is ongoing and we will announce the details of the location and support we will be offering once this has been further developed.

"However, we must stress that the city council is clearly not in a position to fund the costs of a new stadium.

"Any investment the council makes would be in a wider regeneration scheme, subject to a sound financial and economic rationale for doing so."

Elstone had spoken on Tuesday of the importance of the council's assistance in seeing the project through.

He said: "The key partner is Liverpool City Council. We're working very closely with them and they're being incredibly supportive.

"The public and private sector mix is important. Support from the public purse whether that's through grants or other forms of subsidy; and whether it's regional, national or European, we have to investigate all possibilities of securing public funding into the project.

"That’s one of the reasons why our scheme is so heavily focused on jobs and education and welfare; to essentially support and sustain those sorts of grants and subsidy moneys.

"We’ll need commercial partners alongside that to make the whole jigsaw fit together."

Townsend ruled out of World Cup

    347050_heroa.jpg

Tottenham winger Andros Townsend has been ruled out of the World Cup following an ankle injury sustained in the Saturday's 1-0 win at Stoke.

The 22-year-old has collected five caps for the England national team having broken into the setup in 2013, scoring one goal against Montenegro at Wembley.

However, Townsend will undergo surgery to his left ankle after sustaining ligament damage in the Premier League clash against Mark Hughes's side, with the club confirming he will be out for up to 10 weeks.

A statement on the club's official website read: "Following further examination and consultation, Andros Townsend is to undergo surgery on his left ankle on Thursday after damaging ligaments during our fixture against Stoke City last Saturday.

"The injury is likely to sideline the young winger for up to 10 weeks."

The winger had struggled to break into Tim Sherwood's team after a hamstring injury kept him on the sidelines for the opening fixtures of the current Spurs manager's reign, but his form for England saw him touted for a place in the final squad of 23.

Hodgson is set to name his Three Lions squad on May 12.

Walcott: More trophies will follow if Arsenal win FA Cup

    355368_heroa.jpg

Arsenal winger Theo Walcott believes that winning the FA Cup will prove the catalyst for sustained success over the coming seasons.

It has been nine years since Arsene Wenger's men last collected silverware, that too coming in the FA Cup in a penalty shootout victory over Manchester United in the 2005 final.

Arsenal have the opportunity to end that drought when they meet Hull City in this year's final on May 17 and Walcott thinks victory could spark a new era at the Emirates Stadium.

"If we win the FA Cup, which we have a great chance to do with the way we are playing, the players are going to want more trophies," he told the club's official website.

"I think the first one is so important - once you win that, you'll win more and more. I'm pretty sure of that.

"It would be great for the boss to win a trophy again, too.

"He's shown so much belief in us throughout the years. If we don't play well, he always reflects it back on him, even though it’s our job to go out there each week and try to perform.

"That just shows how much faith he has in us all and it's really important to him. The years just before I arrived here were unbelievable and he wants that again."

Arsenal had been in contention to lift the Premier League title this campaign, but high-profile defeats to the likes of Chelsea and Liverpool saw Wenger's men slip out of the picture.

Walcott has not featured since rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament in January, but he feels injuries to the likes of Aaron Ramsey, Jack Wilshere and Mesut Ozil have proved equally damaging to the club's ambitions.

He added: "Losing Aaron and then Mesut and Jack soon afterwards, the boss admitted it was difficult for us to cope. If you take three main players out of a team, it's going to affect you.

"It was sad for everyone to get injured around the same time but you deal with that as a squad. You want to try and keep your main players fit and sadly we couldn't."

'I made a mistake' - Guardiola apologises for Bayern defeat

    397592_heroa.jpg

Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola says he made a mistake in his side's Champions League semi-final loss to Real Madrid on Tuesday and apologised to the club's fans.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Sergio Ramos struck braces in Real's 4-0 second-leg thrashing of the Bundesliga champions at the Allianz Arena, completing a 5-0 aggregate victory. And Guardiola admitted it was his error that led to Bayern's humiliating defeat, but insisted it's impossible for the team to win every title.

"We played badly when we had the ball. That's my responsibility. I made a mistake," the Spaniard told reporters."I was wrong on some tactical issues. It’s my responsibility. When you don’t play well, these things happen against great rivals, but I’m disappointed.

"This team has to win everything so that people are happy. Sometime it’s not possible. I’m sorry for the disappointment of not playing well.

"Three years ago Bayern won zero titles in a season. If you win the league it may be enough but we knew that this year could only equal the past. We won’t but that’s the sport.

"Today there has been a team that has been better. I still have the impression we’ve had a good Champions League campaign but Real Madrid had the quality and the first-half won it for them.""It’s difficult for me and my players. I’m still proud of them."The reason for the defeat isn’t related to the possession. Football is played with the ball and then there are other things.

"It was a bit better in the first-leg, but congratulations to Real Madrid."Guardiola lamented his side's defending from set-pieces, with Ramos heading in a corner and free-kick in the first half.

Ronaldo netted on the counter-attack before half-time and completed the scoring with a cheeky free-kick which went under a jumping Bayern defensive wall."We have to carry on now. If you don't play well and you defend set-pieces badly, that's just how it is. You are being punished," Guardiola said.

"We are at the highest level in Europe; such mistakes are punished right away."
Guardiola said he had been hopeful Bayern could reproduce the performances they put in against Premier League sides Arsenal and Manchester United earlier in the knockout stages.

"What we did against Arsenal and Manchester [United] did not work today," he said.

"Also in the first-leg in Madrid we had more control than today and at least a couple of chances. Today, just a few. That's why we have lost the semi-final.
"You play with the ball and if you don't have it that doesn't work."

    Liverpool investigate racism allegations

    396209_heroa.jpg

Liverpool are investigating allegations of racist abuse reportedly aimed at Chelsea's Demba Ba in Sunday's Premier League match at Anfield.

The incident was not thought to have been heard by the Senegal international, although it was reported to anti-discrimination group Kick It Out.

Premier League leaders Liverpool are now in the process of looking into it.

"We have been made aware of an allegation made to Kick it Out and we are investigating the matter," a Liverpool spokesperson told Perform.

Jose Mourinho's Chelsea side won the game 2-0, with Ba opening the scoring on the stroke of half-time after capitalising on a slip by Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard.

The Blues then completed the victory with a breakaway goal in second-half injury time as former Anfield fans' favourite Fernando Torres set up forward Willian.

The result saw Chelsea close the gap on Liverpool to two points with two games remaining.

Del Bosque: No racism in football

    397663_heroa.jpg

Spain coach Vicente del Bosque has refuted the notion that racism is a major problem in football.

The issue of racial discrimination has been under the spotlight after Barcelona's Dani Alves had a banana thrown at him during the Liga game against Villarreal at the weekend, with players and fans alike rallying around the Brazilian by creating an anti-racism campaign involving the fruit on social media.Nevertheless, Del Bosque has said he does not believe racism is a widespread problem in the world game."In football there is no racism, absolutely not," Del Bosque told reporters.

"It's not something that everyone is doing. I want to think that these are isolated incidents. In football, there is no racism."Del Bosque also paid tribute to the life of former Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova, who died on Friday aged 45 after battling with cancer in recent years.

"A good man leaves us, who went through his life doing his job well and never doing anything against anyone. He leaves us with half his life left to live. It's a tremendous loss.

"In addition to the personal experiences I've had with him, the other people I know who have had experiences with him are greatly appreciative of him."My relationship with Vilanova was always cordial. A very nice man who was always ready to work together. I deeply lament this loss."

Neymar: Barcelona must not lose hope

    397717_heroa.jpg

Neymar has stressed that Barcelona still have a chance of retaining their La Liga
title and has urged his team-mates to keep on fighting until the end of the season.

The Catalans trail leaders Atletico Madrid by four points going into their final three games but the Brazil international is hopeful that they can still turn things around.
"We must fight until the end," Mundo Deportivo quote Neymar as saying.
"Hope is the last thing to lose. Even if we have only a one per cent chance of winning the title, we must keep going."

Neymar is currently recovering from injury and he is confident of making a comeback before the end of the season."I hope to recover and play the last game. If I have a chance to help out, I will."The attacker then acknowledged that his first year at Barcelona has not been easy, but he remains optimistic about his future at the Camp Nou side.

"I had everything, good and bad, I've had a tough time, but I lift my head and look ahead."I feel relaxed. Everything in life is not easy, sometimes there are good mornings and there are others that are less so.

"We recently lost the Copa del Rey final and it is not a good feeling but you have to learn from everything. When you feel sad, you lift your head and keep smiling."
