Zanetti is a legend and a champion' - Totti

    402820_heroa.jpg

Francesco Totti hailed Inter veteran Javier Zanetti as a "legend" as the Argentine prepares to play his last home game for the club.Zanetti is due to retire after 19 years at San Siro, during which time he has won five Scudetti, four Coppa Italias and one Champions League.

And Totti, who holds similar legendary status at Roma, took to his official blog to pay tribute to the 40-year-old."Players like Javier are not just symbolic or emblems who represent a club for many years," he said.

"But are also real champions who will remain in the history of this sport for their behaviour, professionalism and obviously their attachment to the jersey."'Pupi', a strong embrace and thank you for all you've done for world football.
"You are a legend for all of us."

Inter's Serie A fixture with Lazio on Saturday will mark Zanetti's final game at San Siro before Walter Mazzarri's men finish their season at Chievo the following week.

Ronaldo ruled out of crucial Celta clash

    402861_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed that Cristiano Ronaldo will miss Sunday's Liga clash with Celta through injury.

The Portugal attacker was forced off just nine minutes into Wednesday's 1-1 draw at Valladolid with a suspected thigh problem and will not be risked at the Balaidos, with the capital club's Champions League final against city rivals Atletico just a fortnight away.

"Cristiano won't play because he isn't at 100 per cent," Ancelotti told reporters on Saturday."I've always said we won't risk it because Cristiano isn't at his 100 per cent. We have to win without him."

However, Ancelotti confirmed that Sami Khedira, who has been out of action since suffering knee ligament damage while on international duty with Germany in November, is now ready to make his eagerly-awaited comeback after being an unused substitute for Madrid's two previous games."Khedira is fine," the Italian coach enthused. "He hasn't had any problems and can't wait to play."

Madrid currently sit third in La Liga, four points behind leaders Atletico, and must defeat Celta if they are to keep their slim title hopes alive.

Messi: I don't need to win World Cup to be best

    402743_heroa.jpg

Lionel Messi does not feel that he will have to win a World Cup if he is to be remembered as the greatest player of all time.

The four-time Ballon d'Or winner is already being mentioned in the same breath as Pele and Maradona but, unlike those two true icons of the game, the Argentine has yet to lift football's most prestigious prize. There are those that believe that Messi must win a World Cup to cement his legendary status but the Barcelona attacker does not see it that way.

"I think there are many players considered the best ever without a World Cup," the 26-year-old told Ole ."But obviously winning a World Cup is a positive and it would be very special.

"I hope we are in Rio [the venue for the final of Brazil 2014] enjoying the day there. Hopefully, we can reach that final."

It has been speculated that Messi's focus has been affected this season because of the prospect of representing his country on the game's grandest stage this summer but while he says he is determined to make his compatriots happy by lifting the World Cup on Brazilian soil, he says the tournament has not been a distraction.

"The truth is I don't think about it much," the No.10 insisted. "I can't imagine but I know Brazil will be full of Argentines since it’s so close.
"There is the desire to realise the dreams people have."

Mourinho never explained why I was dropped at Chelsea, says Mata

    395791_heroa.jpg

Manchester United star Juan Mata has revealed that he was never told the reasons why he was dropped at Chelsea by Jose Mourinho.

Following the 51-year-old's return to Stamford Bridge last summer, the Spaniard struggled to secure regular first-team football and made just 13 Premier League appearances before his switch to Old Trafford at the end of January.

Mata was named as Chelsea's player of the year for two consecutive seasons before Mourinho's arrival and the midfielder says that he did not ask why he was frozen out.

"No. We never talked about that. Nor would we," Mata told The Guardian.

"When I played, I played. He would give me instructions.

"There are coaches who explain but others who don't think it's necessary. That's all."

Mata maintains that he still keeps in touch with his former team-mates at Chelsea but concedes that the build-up to his move to Old Trafford was difficult to cope with.

"Mentally, it was complicated. It was hard to leave Chelsea and I'll always be grateful but, at the same time, I was joining a great club,” said the midfielder.

"I spent virtually the whole time at home with my family, trying to stay calm, waiting, watching time pass, watching films and series, checking the phone. I went to the gym to make sure I didn't lose shape because I hardly trained [with Chelsea].

"Lots of team-mates are friends and they call. Not to gossip but to ask how you are, to be by your side. I'm still in touch with people at Chelsea; there are good people in that dressing room, friends forever.

"Everything depends on the club more than the player: the quantities, the paperwork."

Juanfran fumes at suggestion Real Madrid have gifted La Liga to Atletico or Barcelona

    402762_heroa.jpg

Juanfran has admitted that he "hates" that some pundits are suggesting that Real Madrid have gifted La Liga to Atletico or Barcelona.

After the Catalans' 2-2 draw at home to Getafe and Atleti's shock 2-0 loss at Levante last weekend, Los Blancos knew that victory over Valencia at the Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday night and a midweek win at Vallodlid in their game in hand on their two title rivals would have seen them draw level on points with the Rojiblancos at the top of the table.

Carlo Ancelotti's men drew both games, though, meaning that the title is now in the hands of both Barca and Atletico, who meet on the final day of the season at Camp Nou.Consequently, Juanfran is upset by the idea that no matter what happens in Catalunya on Sunday week, there will be those who feel that La Liga will have been lost by Madrid, rather than won by either the Blaugrana or Atleti.

"I hate that people think that," the 29-year-old defender told reporters. "If Madrid don’t win the league and Atleti or Barca do, it will be because these teams have been better.

"Madrid will try until the end because they have the players and staff to do so_Otherwise, it will be a demerit for Madrid and a merit for Barca or Atletico.

"I have said very clearly I don't like it when people say that if Madrid don't win it's because they lost it, not that we won it. If we win this league it will show that Atletico has been better this year.

"If Barca win in the last game then it will be their achievement, too, and if Madrid win, it will be clear that they deserve it and I can't detract from a team because people think or try to belittle another."

Presuming Barca beat Elche and Atletico see off Malaga this weekend, Diego Simeone's side would go into next weekend's trip to Camp Nou with their three-point lead still intact.Consequently, while a final-day defeat would see the Catalans nick the title on account of a superior head-to-head record, having claimed a draw at the Vicente Calderon earlier this season, a draw would be enough for the Rojiblancos.

However, Juanfran insists that Atletico would not make the mistake of playing for a point against Barca."It would be a mistake to think we can draw, because in two moves, Andres [Iniesta] or Leo [Messi] can win the game and we go home with nothing,” the full-back said.

"I had a bad time watching at Levante. It was a very sad day. I'm looking forward to helping the team win."

Chelsea boss Mourinho: Lukaku's loan spell at Everton a success

    386543_heroa.jpg

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is pleased with young striker Romelu Lukaku's "successful" loan spell at Everton.

The Blues forward looked set to push for a breakthrough into the first team this season before heading for Goodison Park late in the summer transfer window, where he has scored 15 goals in 32 games across all competitions.

With Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa on his way to Stamford Bridge in the summer, Lukaku's future is uncertain - with the Toffees and Tottenham both interested in a permanent move - but the Portuguese recognises that he has benefited from his time away.

"Romelu Lukaku had what I call a successful loan," Mourinho told Chelsea's official website.

"Sometimes players go on loan and, at the end of the season, we cannot find one positive reason for that loan.

"But Lukaku played all the time - apart from when he was injured - so he has minutes of experience in the Premier League in a good team, with a good coach and scoring his goals.

"You can say the same thing about Thibaut Courtois [at Atletico]. A successful case of loans are the ones we have to analyse.

"My final report [on the season, given to the club on Monday] will have in detail these kinds of cases.

"That's my job - to analyse things, have an opinion and make my decisions.

"I have to work with the club and respect the club's decisions but I know clearly what I would like for next season."

The Blues boss also praised Eden Hazard, with whom he has disagreed on tactics in public of late but who was a standout player for both Chelsea and the Premier League in the opening months of the season.

Mourinho observed: "Eden has had a big evolution in his game and a big evolution in his personality. He had a high that lasted for a long time - many, many months.

"He couldn't finish on a high because he was injured and in the most important moment of the season - for the second leg against Paris, for the first leg against Atletico - he was not there.

"Against Atletico in the second leg he was there but not in top condition. He wasn't there for the last few matches of the Premier League because of his injury but he was clearly a player with a big evolution and hopefully he will be even better next season."

Manchester United will listen to offers for Zaha

    368548_heroa.jpg

Manchester United are open to offers for misfit winger Wilfried Zaha this summer and are willing to take a €6 million hit on the €18m that they paid Crystal Palace for him 16 months ago, Goal can reveal.

Club officials are aware that the unsettled youngster would prefer a move back south and have already fielded calls about his situation, with Arsenal, Tottenham, Newcastle and former club Palace all interested.

Arsenal would be a particularly attractive option for Zaha, who supported the Gunners as a boy and almost moved to north London before being swayed by a personal plea from Sir Alex Ferguson.

Zaha arrived at Old Trafford last summer after firing the Eagles to promotion but failed to impress David Moyes, making just four appearances before being sent out on loan to struggling Cardiff City.

But the England Under-21 international's spell in Wales has been no more productive, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer granting him just 13 appearances as the Bluebirds suffered relegation from the Premier League.

If no suitable permanent offers are forthcoming for Zaha this summer, United are willing to consider another loan spell in the Premier League. The youngster's €30,000-a-week wages are not expected to pose a problem to any deal.

There is a feeling within United that Wigan would represent the ideal loan option for Zaha if they gain promotion to the top flight through the Championship play-offs this season under Uwe Rosler.

The two clubs enjoy a good relationship and fellow United youngster Nick Powell has benefitted from a temporary spell at the DW Stadium this term.

Aguero: I’ll play through the pain against West Ham

    400810_heroa.jpg

Sergio Aguero has pledged to play through the pain during Manchester City's game against West Ham on Sunday if he is not 100 per cent fit.

The Argentina international picked up a groin problem against Everton which ruled him out of City’s midweek clash with Aston Villa, a match the side won 4-0 in his absence to take control of the title race.

City’s healthy goal difference means a draw against the Hammers is likely to be enough to seal the title, and Aguero is eager to play a part at the Etihad Stadium.

“I feel good – I’m not 100% yet, but I should be by Sunday,” the 25-year-old told the club’s official website.

“Even if I’m not, the emotion of the occasion and the desire of everyone will carry me through and I won’t notice any pain.”

Aguero is no stranger to final-day heroics, having scored the goal that clinched the title in 2011-12, though the former Atletico Madrid hitman suspects West Ham will pose a different test to QPR, who were fighting for their own survival two years ago.

“I think it’s going to be different, but that doesn’t for one moment mean it’s going to be easier,” he continued.

“That gave them an extra edge – West Ham obviously want to come to the Etihad and beat us, but they don’t have any pressure on them so that makes it a different game.

“We still have a similar pressure on us as last time because we need a win to guarantee the title.”

World Cup would be a 'dream' for Verratti

    378698_heroa.jpg

A call-up to Cesare Prandelli's Italy squad for the World Cup would be a "dream" for Paris Saint-Germain youngster Marco Verratti. The 21-year-old has become a regular starter in the French capital this season under Laurent Blanc and that has led to him being included in the squad for several World Cup qualifying matches.

Competition for places in Italy's midfield is intense with Thiago Motta, Riccardo Montolivo and Andrea Pirlo just three players who can play in his position.Verratti insists that he is calm about his chances of making the 23-man squad for the finals, and will not be too downhearted if he is not selected.

"Obviously, it is in my mind because I am a professional player, but there is no stress," he said. "To participate in a World Cup for your country is a dream for me.
"If I have the chance to go to Brazil, so much the better for me!"If this is not the case, I will continue to work for further progress."

Since moving to PSG from Pescara in 2012, Verratti has made 81 appearances in all competitions, but he is still waiting for his first competitive goal for the club.

Rodgers supports FA commission B-team plans

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has backed Football Association chairman Greg Dyke's plans to introduce Premier League B-teams into a new fifth tier of English football from the 2016-17 season.

Dyke has recieved huge criticism since announcing various prospoals set out by the England Commission in a bid to boost the number of English players starting in the top flight.
But Rodgers, who has previous experience handling youth teams at Reading and Chelsea, insists it is something he has been long in favour of.

"It's something that I've thought for years that should happen. It's one I'm a big advocate of," he told TalkSPORT.

"I've worked in development for nearly 15 years and I look at the investment; there's a huge investment that's been put into young players in this country, and there's a huge investment that's been put into coaching.

"We're talking 300 odd-million pounds in coaching for young players to come through, and yet we look at the numbers and the stats and they'll tell you that there's only over 30 per cent of young [English] players that are getting an opportunity in what is the most competitve league in the world, so we have to find a way to give them the opportunity.

"Because as much as what we've done with the schedule of under-21s, it doesn't bring the competition, the competitve nature, that's required for you as a manager to assess a young player.

"People will always talk about the tradition of the game here in this country, but one of the things that's most constant is change and you have to look at ways in which you can be better and giving young players a chance.

"And I think that the B league, however it is formed, is something that's very important to give young players that competitive football."

Sherwood: I get no respect at Tottenham

    399128_heroa.jpg

Tim Sherwood believes he isn't getting the treatement he deserves at Tottenham, saying it has left him feeling like a supply teacher at a school.

Last month, it was reported that Spurs have decided to replace the former Blackburn midfielder as manager at the end of a season which has seen the club fail to mount a meaningful challenge for the top four.

A point at home to Aston Villa on Sunday will see Tottenham secure sixth spot and a place in the Europa League next season.

Despite signing an 18-month contract after replacing Andre Villas-Boas, Sherwood's future at White Hart Lane has been the subject of speculation almost since his arrival, with Louis van Gaal, Mauricio Pochettino and Frank de Boer linked with the post.

And the 45-year-old is frustrated that he remains in the dark over his job security at this stage of the season and feels he has been shown a lack of respect by the club.

"I am doing this job with a lot of uncertainty around my future," he told reporters.
"If you have a supply teacher who comes into your school, sometimes they are not treated with the respect that a headmaster is."Midfielder Sandro told ESPN Brazil earlier this weekthat Sherwood was set to leave at the end of the season, and the coach suggested that some of his squad knew more about the situation than he did.

"If I need any information, I am better off asking the players," he added. "Sandro obviously has a knowledge of what is going on. I wish I knew."I don't know if the chairman has spoken to Sandro but obviously somebody has told him.

"The players look a lot at the speculation and it begins to be more than that. I have had a lot of players come to me and say to me: 'Our agents have told us you are not going to be here next year.' It's a very difficult situation."

Mexico coach Miguel Herrera has named Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez and Villarreal's Giovani dos Santos in his 23-player squad for the World Cup.

Also included were Porto duo Hector Herrera and Diego Reyes, as well as Ajaccio goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa, but Villarreal's Javier Aquino missed out, despite having a good debut season in La Liga.

Versatile veteran Carlos Salcido was a surprise inclusion and returns to the set-up having not previously been picked by Herrera, while Bayer Leverkusen's Andres Guardado is included despite some doubts over his fitness. Sunderland loan star Borini hoping for Liverpool chance

    402319_heroa.jpg

Sunderland's on-loan forward Fabio Borini hopes his form for Gus Poyet's men will earn him a chance to shine for Liverpool next season.

Borini has scored three goals in his last four matches to help Sunderland to four consecutive Premier League victories - a run which has seen them pull away from the brink of relegation to the safety of 14th place in the table.

And the Italian has hinted he would like the chance to return to Liverpool and help Brendan Rodgers' side as they prepare themselves for the return of Champions League football next season."I have enjoyed every second, not every minute, of it here," he told reporters. "It has been great from the fans here towards me, the city and everyone in the club.

"The love and friendship that they give me through the season has been incredible.
"Liverpool do need a bigger squad next season because you can't play four competitions with the same 11 players."But it is now down to the Liverpool point of view and their sporting director. It is not down to my words.

"It depends on what Liverpool say. I can't say. I can say nothing now because anything is possible."

    Atletico suffer Diego Costa blow

    402381_heroa.jpg

Atletico Madrid's hopes of completing a Liga and Champions League double have been dealt a blow with the news that Diego Costa has suffered a thigh injury. The Brazil-born Spain international has spearheaded his side's charge to the top of the Primera Division with 27 goals in 34 appearances.

He was unable to prevent a 2-0 loss to Levante last week and is unlikely to participate against Malaga on Sunday, though he should be fit to face Barcelona the following week."Diego Costa underwent tests to determine the extent of the grade one thigh injury muscle on his right leg," a club statement reads.

"These tests have confirmed that there is no tear. The forward did not train with his team-mates in the morning session on Friday."Costa suffered a similar injury against Barcelona during the first leg of their Champions League tie.

Atleti face Malaga on home soil on Sunday before travelling to Camp Nou for a mouth-watering clash on the final day of the season.

Rooney & Jones will be fit for England's World Cup campaign, says Giggs

    400208_heroa.jpg

Interim Manchester United manager Ryan Giggs has confirmed that Wayne Rooney and Phil Jones will be fit for England's World Cup campaign.

Jones suffered a shoulder injury during United's 3-1 win over Hull City at Old Trafford on Tuesday, while Rooney has missed the club's last two matches with a groin problem and is a doubt for Sunday's final game of the season at Southampton.

"Phil's injury isn't as bad as I thought on the night. He's obviously out for Sunday but should be OK for the World Cup," the 40-year-old told reporters.

Giggs revealed that Rooney has taken part in training this week but admits that the game against Mauricio Pochettino's men may come "too quick for him".

England's 23-man World Cup squad, plus an additional seven players on standby, will be named by Roy Hodgson on Monday before the squad fly to Portugal for a training camp.

England will return to face Peru at Wembley on May 30 and will then travel to Miami where they will play warm-up games against Ecuador and Honduras.

Hodgson's men face Italy in their Group D opener on June 14.

Dortmund can't replace Lewandowski - Watzke

    402318_heroa.jpg

Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke has admitted that the club will not be able to find a suitable replacement for Robert Lewandowski.

The Polish attacker is set to leave the club for Bayern Munich at the end of the season on a free transfer, after establishing himself as one of the deadliest forwards in Europe over the past two seasons.

BVB have already announced that Adrian Ramos will arrive from Hertha Berlin this summer, while the DFB-Pokal finalists have also been heavily linked with a move for Torino's Ciro Immobile, but Watzke is still expecting his side to miss Lewandowski."I would caution against the idea that we will be able to replace him completely," he is quoted as saying by the club's official website.

"There are only two or three players of his quality in the world and we can't afford them. So far we have always been able to fill the void left by top quality players."
Despite Lewandowski's imminent departure, just a year after Mario Gotze's move to Bayern, Watzke insisted that he is unconcerned by rumours that ace attacker Marco Reus and coach Jurgen Klopp could also be lured away from Signal Iduna Park.

"It's not a surprise that our players are moving into the focus of top European clubs," the Dortmund CEO explained. "We know what we have in Marco."I'm quite sure that Marco likes it here with us very much and knows what he has at this extraordinary club. I'm sure that Marco will celebrate more successes with BVB.

"We are very pleased about the way Klopp and Mats Hummels have expressed their commitment to BVB again and again in the last couple of weeks.
"That shows that we on a path where sporting ambitions can be realised."

Barcelona not an option for Muller, says agent

    402291_heroa.jpg

The agent of Bayern Munich star Thomas Muller has dismissed rumours that his client could be set for a move to Barcelona.

The Germany international is reportedly considering his options after the arrival of Pep Guardiola at the Allianz Arena saw his playing time cut this season. However, his representantive says that the 24-year-old will not be plying his trade for the Catalan giants next season.

"Barcelona is definitely not an option for Thomas," Lodwig Kogl told Bild.Muller has scored 25 goals in all competitions this season but has found it hard to come by a regular spot in the team of late.

The likes of Liverpool, Manchester United and Arsenal have also been linked with a summer move for his services this summer.
