Arsenal boss Wenger dismisses Monaco rumours

    401936_heroa.jpg

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has dismissed rumours linking him with a return to his former club Monaco.

Reports in France had suggested that the big-spending Ligue 1 runners-up were poised to make a move for Wenger, with current coach Claudio Ranieri set to be relieved of his duties at the end of the season.

Wenger's own future has been shrouded in doubt in recent weeks as he continues to stall on signing an extension to his Gunners deal, but he has distanced himself from talk of joining Monaco.Speaking to the BBC after beating Norwich City 2-0 on Sunday he said: "I wish Monaco well, but there is no interest there."

The win at Norwich - sealed courtesy of goals from Aaron Ramsey and Carl Jenkinson - saw the return of Jack Wilshere from a foot injury, with the midfielder coming off the bench just after the hour mark.

Wenger was in no doubt over the 22-year-old's availability for the World Cup, with Roy Hodgson set to name his England squad on Monday afternoon."The World Cup is one month so it is plenty of time," he added. "He can play now so it just shows you that there is no problem with him being available for England."

The Frenchman added that fellow World Cup hopeful Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is also close to full fitness following a groin injury, hinting that he could be ready to face Hull City in the FA Cup final next Saturday.

"He should be back into our squad on Wednesday for normal training. He will be available for Roy to pick him and I wouldn't be surprised if he’s picked."

    Simeone 'annoyed' by Atletico draw

    403868_heroa.jpg

Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone admitted he was "annoyed" after his side missed out on the chance to win La Liga on Saturday. The capital club were held to a 1-1 draw against Malaga, while Barcelona were also forced into a share of the spoils at Elche.

They now face a daunting trip to Camp Nou next week, knowing that a point will be enough to seal the Primera Division title and the Argentine feels that Atleti's hopes are evenly balanced.

"It’s annoying when you give everything the game demands, because the players gave everything. Now there’s a 50-50 chance, just like in every final," he told reporters.

"I don’t give an opinion about our rivals. It’s not easy to win and at the end of long seasons this type of thing can happen. I played for 20 years and I understand what’s happening.

"We’re humble and what this team has done is truly amazing. It’s taken a lot of effort and I hope we can finish it off in the Camp Nou." It’s not easy to stand back from reality and the rivals we are facing are used to these situations."

Star striker Diego Costa missed the game against Malaga at the Vicente Calderon but Simeone is hoping the Spain international will recover for the trip to Barca.
"He’s progressing well. We’ll see how he is for the match."

Atletico have faced Barcelona five times in all competitions this season, drawing four and winning once.

    Cole retires from international duty

    403876_heroa.jpg

Ashley Cole has retired from international duty after missing out on a spot in England's World Cup squad.

The 33-year-old made 107 appearances for his country after making his bow against Albania in March 2001.However, he has lost his place in the Chelsea team this season to Cesar Azpilicueta and has seen Everton's Leighton Baines favoured in recent internationals.

Cole made just 15 starts in the Premier League under Jose Mourinho this term, and hours after playing 90 minutes in Chelsea's campaign-ending 2-1 win over Cardiff City on Sunday the 33-year-old made the announcement via his official Twitter page.

He posted: "I got the call from Roy and agree England team should be about the young players. I think it best I retire from England team now."We have a great manager and team and I wish them only success. I will be supporting them like a true fan. Thanks to everyone for everything."

Cole's decision comes on the eve of Roy Hodgson announcing his party for the tournament later this year and the Chelsea man suggested that Baines and Southampton youngster Luke Shaw had been given the nod over him.He added: "Baines and Shaw are great players, proved this season, and are the future of this country, it was a pleasure to get 107 caps.

"Like me or not, trust me it's hurt me to stop playing for my country."Cole played every game in the last five major tournaments for his country and is fifth in the all-time list of most-capped England players.

His club future also remains unclear after he tweeted his thanks to Chelsea's fans following the win over Cardiff, having been reduced to tears after their final home game of the season against Norwich City last week.

He said: "Whatever happens it's been a pleasure you Chelsea fans have to been amazing to me."

'Big teams cannot be satisfied just with one title' - Pellegrini & Kompany strive to improve Manchester City

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini and captain Vincent Kompany have both vowed to build on the club's Premier League triumph.

City clinched their second title in three years on Sunday afternoon thanks to a 2-0 victory over West Ham at the Etihad Stadium, adding to their Capital One Cup victory in March.

The club finished 11 points behind rivals Manchester United last season as they failed to successfully defend their 2011-12 title under Roberto Mancini, and both men are determined not to repeat past mistakes.

"Well of course I think that big teams cannot be satisfied just with one title," Pellegrini told Sky Sports. "It’s very important to win one or two titles in a year, we must celebrate today and tomorrow and on Tuesday start to work for next season because this club and these players deserve more titles.

"It’s special, because my first year here in England is not easy to be accustomed to English football but I think I manage a great group of players, a great institution, and our great fans."

Kompany, who settled any lingering nerves by scoring his side's second goal shortly after half-time, backed up his manager's message and vowed to turn City into a "big" club.

"We're building a club, not just a team that wins trophies every now and again, we're building a club," he said.

"The past is the past but surely we'll have our place in the future. That's why I'm excited to be here, that's why every single year I have a feeling that we need to be better, and next year we have to be even better.

"This has to transpire through to the whole club. If we want to be a big club then this should be one of so many. It will take a lot of work but people are ready for it."

Kompany also insisted that he is realising his chilhood dreams as City captain: "The way we finished this season is a credit to how we've always prepared, every single game and how we've always believed in ourselves. [I am] extremely happy and this is for the fans.

"Forget about the money, forget about everything. As a kid you grow up and all your dream of is playing games, winning games and lifting trophies. That's what I've dreamed of. Not the rest, I've dreamed of lifting trophies. I feel like I'm achieving that dream by doing this."

Manchester City rise to pot two for next season's Champions League draw
    385634_heroa.jpg

Manchester City have risen from pot three to pot two for next season’s Champions League draw, a first for the newly crowned champions of England.

Having reached the knockout stages in this year’s competition, Premier League giants have earned enough points in Uefa’s ranking system - which is based on a club’s results in the competition over the previous five seasons - to move from pot three to pot two. The domestic troubles of the likes of AC Milan and Inter have also aided City's rise in the draw.

This will reduce the chances of City falling into another 'group of death', a fate that has seen them drawn in the same group as Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid in their last two Champions League campaigns.

Despite their elevation, Manuel Pellegrini’s side remain below London clubs Arsenal and Chelsea, who, after earning enough points over the last few campaigns, have retained their pot one status.

Whilst this signals another step forward in the seemingly unstoppable rise of City, the Champions League draw will be markedly more difficult for Liverpool, who return to the competition for the first time in four years.

Brendan Rodgers' side will face the possibility of being drawn against European giants Bayern Munich and Juventus, or Paris Saint- Germain and Real Madrid, whilst a kinder draw would see them face Benfica or Porto from pot one.

As a result of their absence from the competition, the Merseysiders are 32nd in Uefa’s coefficient rankings, and will most likely be drawn from pot three in next season’s draw.

    Conte open to Juventus exit

    394634_heroa.jpg

Antonio Conte has admitted he will consider "other projects" after Juventus saw off Roma 1-0 on Sunday.

Pablo Daniel Osvaldo came off the bench to score a last-gasp winner against his former club as Juve moved on to 99 points with a game still to play, two better than the landmark set by Inter in 2006-07.

With a third top-flight title under his belt, Conte has emerged as one of Europe's leading coaches and is likely to attract attention from some of the continent's other top clubs. He told Sky Sport Italia: "I repeat, these three years have been fantastic and I asked so much from these players, who gave me everything I wanted.

"I generally don’t agree with a sabbatical, but if there was a unity of ideas to leave with great affection and respect, then I would evaluate other projects that intrigue me."These things go in cycles and I've already told the club what I think. We will soon clarify the situation."

Conte then turned his focus to celebrating another successful campaign and a victory over a Roma side he holds in the highest regard."We certainly have a lot to celebrate, as this is an incredible campaign," he said. "We've beaten Roberto Mancini's Inter record of Serie A points and it will be tough for anyone to match.

"We've beaten our direct rivals on their home turf, a splendid Roma side that kept us alive with the right fear and respect throughout the season. Only a great Juve could have maintained this tempo and we're proud to have done it."

Giggs: Manchester United managerial situation will be sorted out next week

    401094_heroa.jpg

Interim Manchester United manager Ryan Giggs expects a permanent appointment to be finalised "next week" after the end of the Premier League.

The Red Devils closed out their season by recovering to a 1-1 draw at Southampton on Sunday, ending the Welshman's brief tenure in the dugout after stepping in following David Moyes's sacking as Louis van Gaal is set to be confirmed as the new man at Old Trafford imminently.

"I think I've got to decide within the next week," Giggs told reporters of his own future after the game.

"The managerial situation will be sorted out, probably, next week and then, for my own position, I've got to think about it and decide what to do.

"It's been an experience [taking temporary charge]. There's been ups and downs – more ups than downs and the downs were obviously the Sunderland game - but I didn't want that second half [against Southampton] to end. The fans were great, the players were great. I loved it.

"I probably learned more against Sunderland than from any of the wins but I learned the character that these players have and I've learned about everything that comes away from the football. It's incessant at times.

"[The decision is] whether to play on or not, whether to stay on [as a coach] or whether to take a year off from football. All the options are open for me."

Tottenham's win on the final day ensured that United will play no European football next season but Giggs is keen to use that absence as a chance to focus on domestic affairs.

"I'm a positive person and I look at it from a positive point of view," he added. "It's a chance to focus on our league form and get good cup runs, which we didn't this year.

"If we do well in the cups, we can rotate the squad and give all the players a chance because we do have to keep the squad for when we get back into Europe next year."

    Sherwood regrets taking Tottenham job

    403688_heroa.jpg

Tottenham head coach Tim Sherwood says he regrets taking charge of the club as his time in the dug-out looks set to end.

Spurs beat Aston Villa 3-0 on the final day of the Premier League season to secure sixth place and Europa League football next season, but the 45-year-old believes the club was wrong to ever consider themselves as contenders for a Champions League spot, let alone a title bid.

Goal revealed last month that Tottenham have decided to replace Sherwood this summer, and the 45-year-old has stated he either needs a contract extension or will leave White Hart Lane of his own accord to manage elsewhere.

"[The hype] was ridiculous," he told reporters. "We're talking about taking out one of the best players in the world in Gareth Bale and replacing him with seven players who have never ever played in this competition previously.

"How on earth did we expect to be title challengers? I can understand why from the outside, if you don't know the game from the outside, that they would just hit the floor running - it doesn't happen, they need time.

"The club will be better with those seven players next season, because they will have had a season playing in this competition, the experience of it, and they will improve from it.

"But to take out a real match-winner - eight winning goals [Bale] scored last season, 21 goals; Jermain Defoe, 10 goals; Clint Dempsey, eight goals - look at all the goals you are taking away. What are you replacing them with?

"You're replacing him with [Emmanuel] Adebayor who didn't get a start, who wouldn't kick a ball for the club until I took over, and he was the only proven Premier League goalscorer that we had, and [Roberto] Soldado, who is going to take time to settle.

"It's impossible to start thinking about wining the championship, or even top four. As much as I don't want to pour water over it, that's a fact.

"If you talk to people who know, it's impossible. We've qualified for the Champions League once - once. We've got no divine right to qualify for the Champions League.

"Where we finished for the Europa League - in sixth - is where we should be, and where we are. We all want to aspire to be in the top four and win championships, be we ain't getting there at the moment."

"We ain't getting there with what we've got, and to remove a match winner like Gareth Bale out of that squad, then we shouldn't have expected it."

Asked whether he needed a new contract, Sherwood stated: "I think that's very difficult [to manage a team with a one-year contract] because you're in the same situation again, aren't you? You're a supply teacher.

"Iit can only be that [a new deal or a departure]. It will be interesting to see how I've been judged. If I'm to leave, it can't be on results. If I knew it was only five months I wouldn't have done it, to be perfectly honest.

"I think [a quick decision] makes sense. I haven't spoken to Daniel [Levy] about what the future holds, but if I knew any more I'd tell you.

"I think it's a 59 percent win ratio in the Premier League and if I had started the season [as manager] we'd be in the Champions League.

Sherwood was philosophical when asked if the match would be his last in charge, saying: "If it is, life goes on. There were no tears shed out there. This club means a lot to me, but if I'm not to continue here as a manager, I'll be somewhere else."

Rodgers insists Liverpool will continue as Premier League title frontrunners

Brendan Rodgers insists Liverpool have the belief to win the Premier League next season.

Liverpool narrowly missed out on this year’s title as Manchester City registered a 2-0 win over West Ham to lift the trophy.

Rodgers’ men came from behind to sign off their campaign with a 2-1 victory at home to Newcastle on Sunday and the 41-year-old feels his side can maintain a challenge next season.

"The word now is belief," Rodgers said. "Belief that we can be up there challenging.

"I read a letter to the players on the first day of the season from a supporter, who told us about getting into the top four and the pride he has in the club.

"And not just to think about fourth but to think of winning.

"Probably at the same time the players and maybe the staff thought the letter was maybe a bit far-fetched.

"I read the same letter back again (on Sunday) and all the words that went into the players' minds were the same as the beginning.

"It's been a wonderful campaign. The overriding feeling at the moment is one of sheer pride of the players.

"It's been incredible to see the supporters, we've made them dream and that's our job to do that. And the great thing is, we'll improve."

Gabi: Atletico will win La Liga at Camp Nou

    403824_heroa.jpg

Atletico Madrid midfielder Gabi is confident the Vicente Calderon side will clinch the Primera Division title in next week's away game against Barcelona.

Diego Simeone's men would have been crowned Spanish champions had they beaten Malaga at the Vicente Calderon on Sunday, but they had to settle for a 1-1 draw following goals from Samuel for the guests and Toby Alderweireld for Atleti.
"We'll get a result at Camp Nou to become champions," Gabi told AS."In this team we still believe. We are Atletico and we’ll go out to win. We wanted to become champions on Sunday for all the fans, but we’ll give everything in Barcelona to become champions. We’re used to playing finals.

"Malaga were very motivated because they needed a point to stay up. At the end we were desperate because we knew the result in Barcelona."Atletico hold a three-point lead over Barca ahead of next week's title decider and a draw at Camp Nou will suffice.

Madrid have lost intensity - Ancelotti

    403859_heroa.jpg

Carlo Ancelotti has voiced his frustration with Real Madrid's 2-0 La Liga loss against Celta on Sunday which saw them drop out of the title race with one more game to go.

The Santiago Bernabeu side would have moved to within two points of leaders Atletico and one point clear of Barcelona ahead of next week's encounter between both of their title rivals, but Sunday's results mean they will finish second at best now."We are disappointed that we lost La Liga. This is the first competition this season we will not win and that's a deception," Ancelotti stated at a press conference.

"We missed several important players, so it was not easy to prepare for this match. We gave away two easy goals, but we tried to get back in the game after that.
"There's no denying that we haven't done well in the past few games, but I don't think we gave away La Liga. We lost a bit of intensity after the Champions League semi-finals and that has cost us dearly."We have to look toward the future now, recover from our efforts and prepare for the final."

Real Madrid meet Espanyol in their last league game of the season before they take on Atletico Madrid in the Champions League final on May 24.
