David Luiz: It's official, I'm a PSG player

    414148_heroa.jpg

David Luiz has suggested that his move to Paris Saint-Germain from Chelsea is official and says he is excited to begin life in Ligue 1.

The French club struck a €49 million deal with the Blues – a world-record for a defender – last week and Luiz has now revealed he is excited to begin the next chapter of his career in the French capital, having already said his goodbye to Stamford Bridge supporters.

"Yes, this is a new stage in my life, a new project in a new country with a new language," he told L'Equipe. "I was very happy at Chelsea, I won major titles, I made friends, I gained everybody’s respect, but I think I have come to the end of a cycle.

"I will now begin another in Paris after the World Cup. I am very pleased, it will be announced when the transfer window opens and all documents will be finalised, but we can now talk and confirm that everything is okay. It's official: I'm joining PSG and I'll be very happy.

"As I often say, I am privileged; I have played at big clubs in beautiful cities,” he added. “I'll have an opportunity to discover more with Paris Saint-Germain in Paris.

"I cannot complain, I have to enjoy it and represent PSG as best I can. I will try to achieve our goals, win titles, and show who I really am. This is what I want for my future at PSG."

Luiz will play alongside Brazil team-mate Thiago Silva in the PSG defence – a factor he admits influenced his decision to leave London.

"Of course he influenced my decision! Thiago is a great friend, a great player but you know I didn’t even need to clarify that.

"He is someone I get on really well with, and has been a mate since the first time we met at the national team. He is very friendly, he has a big heart, he is humble and has the same dreams as me... the only problem is that I'm going to spend more time with him than with my family!

"It's fantastic to work with a player of his talent every day, especially when he is such a wonderful person."

Netherlands announce 23-man World Cup squad

    414455_heroa.jpg

Netherlands have announced their final 23-man squad which will go to the World Cup this summer, with few surprises from Louis van Gaal's selection.

Major names such as Arjen Robben, Robin van Persie, Wesley Sneijder, Nigel de Jong and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar star in the 2010 World Cup runners-up squad, who will look to make amends for their group stage Euro 2012 exit this summer.

Rafael van der Vaart is the most notable absentee but his omission was already confirmed after he picked up a calf injury in training with the Oranje set-up this week.

Jasper Cillessen, Michel Vorm and Tim Krul were chosen as the three goalkeepers by future Manchester United boss Van Gaal, who sent home uncapped PSV shot-stopper Jeroen Zoet.

Chelsea full-back Patrick van Aanholt and young Manchester City centre-back Karim Rekik, both of whom spent 2013-14 on loan in the Eredivisie, were also axed from the final Dutch squad.

Youthful forwards Jean-Paul Boetius and Quincy Promes - who have a cap each - will not be on the plane to Brazil, while uncapped midfielder Tonny Vilhena is the final name to be excluded from Van Gaal's final selection.

The squad chosen will aim to qualify from a tough group which contain world and European champions Spain, strong South Americans Chile and Asian-region qualifiers Australia.

Goalkeepers: Jasper Cillessen (Ajax), Michel Vorm (Swansea City), Tim Krul (Newcastle United)

Defenders: Paul Verhaegh (Augsburg), Daryl Janmaat (Feyenoord), Joel Veltman (Ajax), Stefan de Vrij (Feyenoord), Ron Vlaar (Aston Villa), Bruno Martins Indi (Feyenoord), Terence Kongolo (Feyenoord), Daley Blind (Ajax)

Midfielders: Leroy Fer (Norwich City), Nigel de Jong (AC Milan), Jordy Clasie (Feyenoord), Jonathan de Guzman (Swansea City), Georginio Wijnaldum (PSV), Wesley Sneijder (Galatasaray)

Forwards: Arjen Robben (Bayern Munich), Robin van Persie (Manchester United), Klaas-Jan Huntelaar (Schalke), Dirk Kuyt (Fenerbahce), Jeremain Lens (Dynamo Kiev), Memphis Depay (PSV)

Spain have announced their 23-man squad which will travel to Brazil this summer for the World Cup, with Diego Costa making the cut while Fernando Llorente, Jesus Navas and Alvaro Negredo have all been omitted.

Costa converted from a Brazil international to la Roja earlier this season and had a stunning season with Atletico Madrid, starring as they won La Liga. However, the 25-year-old has been a major fitness worry throughout the last few weeks, with a recurring hamstring problem limiting his participation in the final league match and the Champions League final.

While Costa has been picked to help Spain defend their crown in South America this summer, Juventus forward Fernando Llorente and Manchester City striker Alvaro Negredo miss out.

Fernando Torres might not have had the best campaign at Chelsea but his performance against Bolivia on Friday may have helped sway Del Bosque as he will be part of the 23-man squad.

Atletico Madrid midfielder Koke, linked with Barcelona, is one of the relatively new faces in the Spain ranks, supported by veterans like Xavi, Andres Iniesta, David Villa and Gerard Pique.

Manchester City's Jesus Navas will be disappointed to have been considered disposable, though the likes of Juanfran Torres and Cesar Azpilicueta will be delighted be available to Spain.

Spain face Netherlands, Chile and Australia as they bid to defend the World Cup title they won four years ago in South Africa.

Goalkeepers: Iker Casillas (Real Madrid), Pepe Reina (Napoli), David De Gea (Manchester United)

Defenders: Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid), Gerard Pique (Barcelona), Raul Albiol (Napoli), Cesar Azpilicueta (Chelsea), Juanfran (Atletico Madrid), Jordi Alba (Barcelona)

Midfielders: Xavi (Barcelona), Xabi Alonso (Real Madrid), Sergio Busquets (Barcelona), Andres Iniesta (Barcelona), Cesc Fabregas (Barcelona), Santi Cazorla (Arsenal), Koke (Atletico Madrid), Javi Martinez (Bayern Munich)

Forwards: David Silva (Manchester City), Diego Costa (Atletico Madrid), Fernando Torres (Chelsea), Pedro (Barcelona), Juan Mata (Manchester United), David Villa (Atletico Madrid)

Portugal 0-0 Greece: Bento's men draw blank without Ronaldo

    414761_heroa.jpg

Portugal were held to a 0-0 draw by Greece in Saturday's friendly clash as they struggled without injured captain Cristiano Ronaldo.

Paulo Bento's men were without their star forward due to the injury problems that were a constant concern during Real Madrid's end-of-season run-in.

And their lack of attacking invention showed in Oeiras as they struggled to break down a well-organised Greece side.

However, it is Greece who made the headlines for unwanted reasons after defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos was substituted after pulling up injured late in the first half with an apparent muscle problem, leaving his hopes of participating in the World Cup in doubt.

Even without the Borussia Dortmund defender to shackle them, Portugal never looked like breaking the deadlock, and Bento will hope his side can show more in front of goal in their final two pre-tournament friendlies, against Mexico and the Republic of Ireland.

Greece's concerns are likely to be focused on the fitness of Papastathopoulos prior to meetings with Nigeria and Bolivia in their last two warm-up games.

Portugal started brightly and could have taken the lead in the first minute when Greece goalkeeper Orestis Karnezis was forced into action as Eder met Nani's right-wing cross with a diving header.

The hosts continued to look the more threatening and six minutes later they were again denied by Karnezis, who tipped Bruno Alves' header over the crossbar from Miguel Veloso's near-post corner.

Bento's men were unable to capitalise on their early dominance, though, and the game soon lost its spark, with both sides struggling to create opportunities.

Greece were then dealt a blow in the 40th minute as Papastathopoulos limped off to be replaced by Vangelis Moras.

Portugal continued to find joy down Greece's left flank, and came close to netting an opener when Nani broke free down the wing early in the second half, but his low ball across the six-yard box failed to find a team-mate.

That missed opportunity summed up Portugal's frustration, and they could have lost the game five minutes from time, but goalkeeper Beto kept out Ioannis Fetfatzidis' low effort after the substitute had worked his way into the box from a corner.

Ricardo Costa's deep cross then hit the top of the crossbar in the final minute of injury time as Portugal were left stifled in a game that offered little as a spectacle.

Netherlands 1-0 Ghana: Early Van Persie strike seals friendly win

    414727_heroa.jpg

Robin van Persie scored the only goal of the game as Netherlands beat Ghana 1-0 in their latest World Cup warm-up.

Having missed the 1-1 draw with Ecuador a fortnight ago, big-hitters Arjen Robben, Wesley Sneijder and Nigel de Jong were among five added to the starting XI.

But it was captain Van Persie – scorer of the equaliser against Ecuador – who made the early breakthrough, tapping home from six yards after being teed up by Sneijder.

Robben squandered numerous opportunities to extend the lead, most notably scooping over the crossbar from close range, but the home side's lead never looked in any danger as Ghana battled well but failed to find a shot on target until the dying minutes.

The Netherlands face one more friendly against Wales on Wednesday before departing for the World Cup in Brazil, while Ghana, who saw Jerry Akaminko taken off on a stretcher in stoppage time, are scheduled to meet South Korea next weekend.

After Van Persie had put the Netherlands in front amid some questionable defending from the visitors, it should have been 2-0 seven minutes later, but Robben chipped over from the edge of the six-yard box after good work by Daley Blind down the left.

The frustration of that miss may have been a factor as Robben lost his temper with Rashid Sumaila after a particularly reckless challenge by the defender, before Blind was caught by Michael Essien's elbow - the term 'friendly' apparently lost on the Ghanaians.

Robben had another chance to open his account midway through the half, but goalkeeper Adam Kwarasey made himself big to deny the attacker, and the Norway-based stopper got down well to deny the Bayern Munich man once again on the stroke of half-time.

The 30-year-old looked like a man on a mission, and his free kick whistled just over the crossbar four minutes into the second period, while opponents Ghana offered little going forward.

Ron Vlaar could not direct his headed effort goalwards from a corner 15 minutes from time, before Robben again drew a save from Kwarasey with a drilled strike from a tight angle.

While the Netherlands will be disappointed not to have built on their early lead, they will no doubt be relieved to emerge from the fixture with a clean bill of health.

Ghana's Akaminko was the only major injury concern of the match after appearing to fall awkwardly on his ankle late on, and the visitors will need to work on their attacking threat if they have designs on qualifying from a tough group in Brazil, as they line up alongside Germany, Portugal and the United States.

Algeria 3-1 Armenia: Ghilas on target in morale-boosting friendly win
    414722_heroa.jpg

Algeria earned a morale-boosting victory ahead of the 2014 World Cup as they comfortably beat Armenia 3-1 on Saturday.

The African outfit were in control throughout in a performance that should keep spirits high going into the World Cup, which begins in 12 days time.

All of Algeria's goals came in the first half, defender Essaid Belkalem putting them in front early with a scrappy close-range finish.

Nabil Ghilas then doubled the advantage before Islam Slimani effectively made sure of victory with Algeria's third.

Striker Artur Sarkisov did reduce the arrears in the second half, however, Armenia never looked like mounting a comeback as Algeria cruised to a straightforward success.

Algeria face Romania on Wednesday before travelling to Brazil to face Belgium, Russia and South Korea in Group H.

Vahid Halilhodzic's men made a strong start at the game in Sion, Switzerland and were rewarded after 13 minutes when Belkalem bundled the ball home from a corner.

Armenia responded well but were punished for failing to test Algeria goalkeeper Mohamed Zemmamouche after 22 minutes as Ghilas struck.

The Porto striker rattled an effort in off the crossbar following a superb run and pass from midfielder Riyad Mahrez.

And the game was put beyond doubt four minutes before the break as Sporting Lisbon striker Slimani displayed great reactions, nodding in from point-blank range after Ghilas had headed against the crossbar.

Two minutes into the second half Armenia gave themselves hope, Sarkisov capitalising on a defensive lapse from Algeria as he raced onto a backpass following a miscommunication in the Algerian backline before slotting into the bottom corner.

Algeria did have a chance to restore their three-goal lead late on as substitute El Arbi Hillel Soudani cleverly worked his way to edge of the area, only to be denied by a strong save from Armenia goalkeeper Roman Berezovskiy.

But that proved to be little more than a footnote as Algeria sealed a strong result as they prepare to try and reach the last-16 of a World Cup for the first time.

Norway 1-1 Russia: Visitors sloppy again in World Cup warm-up

    414635_heroa.jpg

Anders Konradsen's first goal for Norway earned a 1-1 draw with a below-par Russia on Saturday.

The Rennes midfielder's 77th-minute header cancelled out Oleg Shatov's early opener as Fabio Capello's World Cup-bound side were left with much to ponder.

Despite making it nine matches unbeaten since the shock 1-0 reverse to Northern Ireland in a World Cup qualifier in August last year, Russia were less than impressive in Oslo.

Having recorded an unconvincing 1-0 over Slovakia on Monday, the visitors raced into a third-minute lead as Shatov capitalised on some hesitant defending to finish from close range at the second attempt.

Norway, who have won just once in the last 10 games, lost 4-0 against France on Tuesday and looked vulnerable against Capello's side whenever the ball came into the box.

But they improved after the interval and were rewarded when Konradsen headed in Morten Gamst Pedersen's cross via the far post.

It will cause some concern for Russia - who qualified for the World Cup ahead of Portugal in Group F - going into their tournament opener against South Korea on June 17, with matches against Belgium and Algeria to follow.

The visitors, who were without midfielder and captain Roman Shirokov once again through injury, signalled their intent from the start. Shatov saw his initial shot from inside the box blocked before retrieving the loose ball to steer it past goalkeeper Rune Almenning Jarstein.

A long-range Havard Nordtveit free kick called Russia keeper Igor Akinfeev into action midway through the half, but the hosts were immediately under pressure at the other end as Jarstein produced a finger-tip save to keep out Denis Glushakov's header.

Capello made three changes at half-time, with Aleksandr Kerzhakov - scorer of the winning goal against Slovakia - among those to make way.

Norway coach Per-Mathias Hogmo looked increasingly restless on the touchline but was afforded some relief when Pedersen's excellent delivery picked out Konradsen to level the scores.

The hosts were the better side for the remaining 13 minutes but Russia, who have a home friendly against Morocco on Friday before heading to Brazil, held on.

Croatia 2-1 Mali: Perisic fires hosts to victory

    414654_heroa.jpg

An Ivan Perisic brace helped ensure Croatia begun their World Cup preparations with a 2-1 win over Mali on Saturday.

Croatia, who will feature in the tournament's opener against hosts Brazil on June 12, were not at their fluent best but showed glimpses of their undoubted quality at the Stadion Gradski.

Perisic got Croatia's opener when he finished a clever ball from Ivan Rakitic after 15 minutes and he wrapped up an impressive performance with a second four minutes after the hour.

His close-range finish from Ivica Olic's knockdown helped settle any Croat nerves but coach Niko Kovac will have been disappointed to see Cheick Diarra take the shine off their performance - heading home from a corner late on.Former Croatia international Kovac will hope to see a more complete display when his side take on fellow World Cup hopefuls Australia next week.

Kovac opted to name Luka Modric and Nikica Jelavic on the bench for the first of their pre-World Cup friendlies and they got off to a strong start when Perisic fired home the opener early on.

With 15 minutes on the clock, the impressive Rakitic slid through a well-executed pass for Perisic, who clipped the ball home with the outside of his right foot.
The duo almost combined again shortly afterwards when the Sevilla star chipped over a ball for the onrushing Wolfsburg man, only for it to be partially cleared.

Perisic almost got a second chance when Mahamadou N'Diaye and Tongo Doumbia failed to properly deal with the delivery, but Soumbeila Diakite was able to produce a stop.

The visitors began the second half well and caused the Croat defence problems in the air but their opponents' speed and technical quality was soon on show again.
Substitute Sime Vrsaljko saw a shot well saved after a quick break and, after Olic had got his head on Rakitic's resulting corner, Perisic was able to prod home the second. Nouha Dicko flashed a strike just over the crossbar for Mali before Kovac opted to withdraw Mario Mandzukic, Perisic and Rakitic.

Jelavic, Modric and Eduardo da Silva were also given brief run-outs, with substitute Diarra's consolation proving Croatia's only low point.

Italy 0-0 Republic of Ireland: Prandelli rocked by Montolivo injury in friendly draw

    414757_heroa.jpg

Italy were left reeling by an injury which could rule Riccardo Montolivo out of the World Cup following their 0-0 draw with Republic of Ireland on Saturday.

The AC Milan midfielder needed extended treatment to his left leg after an eighth-minute challenge from Alex Pearce, and was taken off the pitch on a stretcher leaving his fitness for the showpiece in the balance.

Italy were far from their most fluent at Craven Cottage and were lucky not to be behind as Shane Long and Anthony Pilkington both missed good chances for Ireland.

Cesare Prandelli's side raised their game in the second half, but Montolivo's injury could be the major talking point ahead of the finals.

Italy started the game well with plenty of energy and created their first chance within five minutes.

Claudio Marchisio was given too much room in midfield and it took a fine save from David Forde to keep the Juventus man's 25-yard strike out.

The impressive start was halted almost immediately, though, with Montolivo's departure - and Ireland seized the initiative.

Long, Pilkington and David Meyler all had excellent sights of goal before the break for Martin O'Neill's men, but Salvatore Sirigu was equal to all of them and pulled off a series of excellent saves.

Ireland started the second half as they finished the first, and Long should have done better after escaping his marker early on, but again Sirigu was there to deny him.

Ciro Immobile had the ball in the net five minutes before the hour but after the Torino striker had converted Giuseppe Rossi's cross he was flagged offside.

Marchisio brought the only save out of Forde in the second half with a low shot after good work from substitute Antonio Cassano, however he was unable to convert on a frustrating night for the 2006 World Cup winners that nearly got worse as substitute Stephen Quinn struck the crossbar in 80th minute.

Italy now face one more warm-up game, against Luxembourg in Verona, before they travel to Brazil for their first match against England on June 14.

:(Montolivo out of World Cup after being stretchered off during Ireland clash

    414757_heroa.jpg

Italy international Riccardo Montolivo is out of the World Cup after being stretchered off after just eight minutes in the friendly clash with Republic of Ireland on Saturday.

The AC Milan captain went down after challenging for the ball with Alex Pearce and required several minutes of treatment on the pitch before being replaced by Alberto Aquilani.

Italy team doctor Enrico Castellaci confirmed after the match that Montolivo has suffered a broken leg and will be unable to travel to the finals next month.

"Montolivo has a fracture on his tibia, he probably will need an operation. He can't go to Brazil with us," he said.

The 29-year-old was involved from the start in something of an experimental line-up from coach Cesare Prandelli, but took a hit to his ankle after just eight minutes at Craven Cottage following Pearce's challenge.

Italy players looking on appeared concerned over the midfielder's injury and medical staff were quick to attend to him on the pitch before ultimately carrying him off on a stretcher.

Montolivo made seven appearances for the Azzurri during their World Cup qualifying campaign and was likely to be an important figure for Prandelli as one of the more experienced players in the camp.

Italy - who drew 0-0 on the night with Ireland - face England in their World Cup opener in just two weeks.

‘No danger of Ribery missing World Cup’ – French FA president

    414595_heroa.jpg

Franck Ribery will be present for France in Brazil for the World Cup this summer, French FA president Noel Le Graet has confirmed.

The Bayern Munich winger missed Les Bleus’ 4-0 win over Norway earlier this week and will not feature in Sunday’s friendly against Paraguay in Nice due to a back problem, but a scan in Paris on Saturday afternoon showed positive results for Didier Deschamps’ side.

"The exams that he has undergone have shown there is no danger of him missing the competition," Le Graet told the media.

"He was a little worried because he had a little pain in his lower back, but it is not of a serious injury. He will certainly resume training next week."

Ribery has not always enjoyed particularly popularity in France but after being nominated for the 2013 Ballon d’Or he is widely considered to be a vital player in Deschamps’ side if they are to enjoy a strong run in the competition.

The coach, who will also be without Real Madrid duo Karim Benzema and Raphael Varane on Sunday, spoke extensively about the winger in his press conference: "We're doing everything possible to get him in the best condition.

"Our goal is to have everyone ready for the last preparation match against Jamaica next Sunday."

Deschamps does not believe France are unique in having personnel problems at this stage and is unflustered by the issues he faces ahead of the opening World Cup match against Honduras.

"Look at the other national teams: [Cristiano] Ronaldo was missing, I saw Spain yesterday and they had many players who did not feature," the former Juventus coach stated.

"I remind you that the goal is to have everyone fit on June 15."

With 81 caps to his name, there is no player in the current French squad who boasts greater international experience than the 31-year-old.

'Pirlo is my hero' - Pogba

    384067_heroa.jpg

Paul Pogba has said Juventus team-mate Andrea Pirlo is his sporting hero and has admitted he tries to emulate the Italy international.

The 21-year-old has been a vital component to the Serie A champions since his move from Manchester United in 2012, cementing a place in Antonio Conte's starting XI alongside Arturo Vidal and Pirlo en route to winning back-to-back Serie A titles.

And the France international admitted that he feels fortunate to be able to feature alongside his role model.

"I am lucky that I get to play with my hero - Andrea Pirlo," he told Mail Sport. "I make no secret I want to become like him. He has won everything, and he has won it playing such an important role."

The midfielder was then asked about the high and low points of his career so far and he confessed his time at Old Trafford fell under the latter category, as he says he didn't feel respected at the English outfit.

"I can’t choose between the two league titles with Juventus and winning my first international cap forFrance. They were both very special.

"My time at Manchester United [is the worst of my career]. Of course when you are at such a big club you understand you need to be patient for your chance, but I did not feel respected or valued as a player or a man."
