Keane out of running for Celtic job

    413708_heroa.jpg

Roy Keane is set to remain in his role as Ireland assistant manager after declining Celtic's attempts to appoint him as their new manager.

Keane was the strong favourite to succeed Neil Lennon in the Parkhead hotseat after informal talks last week with Celtic owner Dermot Desmond but he will instead continue to work alongside Martin O'Neill with the Irish team.

The Football Association of Ireland released a statement on Monday afternoon confirming that Keane would travel with the Ireland squad to America as planned on Wednesday for their two friendlies against Costa Rica and Portugal.

The statement reads: "The Football Association of Ireland today [June 2] confirmed that Roy Keane will travel with the Republic of Ireland squad to the US after he decided not to pursue the informal talks that took place with Celtic any further.

"The Republic of Ireland squad will gather again in Dublin on June 3 before travelling to New York on June 4."

The new favourite to take over at the Scottish champions is former West Brom manager Steve Clarke while Malky Mackay and Owen Coyle are also in the running.

Lambert: Southampton have made my dreams come true

    398713_heroa.jpg

Rickie Lambert has penned a farewell letter to Southampton fans for helping him to realise a "lifelong ambition" of returning to his boyhood club Liverpool. The striker completed a move to Anfield for an undisclosed fee on Monday, returning to the club he left as a trainee 17 years ago.

Lambert scored 115 goals in 229 games for the Saints after signing from Bristol Rovers in 2009, propelling the club to the Premier League and himself into the England squad for the World Cup.

In an open letter to the south-coast club's fans after his move was confirmed, Lambert expressed huge gratitude, claiming Southampton will remain in his heart forever."What can I say…? Southampton has been my life for the past five years, in which we have achieved all of our dreams and more," he wrote."First I have to thank Markus Liebherr for saving Southampton then Alan Pardew for bringing me to the club.

"Thank you to all the staff involved in making me the player I am today. Without your knowledge and commitment I would not be here right now at a World Cup with England.

"Thank you to all the players, past and present, who I have had nothing but good times and success with driven by our club captain, Kelvin Davis. I love every last one of you.

"Thank you to the managers I have worked with - Alan [Pardew], Nigel [Adkins] and Mauricio [Pochettino] - and their teams for helping me and Southampton step up and adapt to every challenge that has come our way the past five years.

"When I grew up there was only one club I loved. I can honestly say now I have two clubs which will always be in my heart and that is thanks to the Saints fans.

"The people who support this club have been nothing short of amazing towards me and, when I look back in years to come, it will be the relationship I had with the fans here which will stand out the most.

"Southampton have allowed me to realise a lifelong ambition by joining Liverpool FC and taking my family home. The five-year plan when I arrived was to get this club from League 1 to the top half of the Premier League. Against all the odds we have achieved that.

"Now, under Katharina Liebherr's leadership, the club has the chance for new plan, a new chapter, and I wish them all the success in the world."

Thiago Silva: Neymar will be star of the World Cup

    415595_heroa.jpg

Brazil defender Thiago Silva believes Neymar can be the star of the World Cup.

The 21-year-old scored just nine goals in his first season in La Liga following last summer's move to Barcelona, with off-the-field concerns surrounding his transfer making headlines more frequently than his form for the Blaugrana.

However, the former Santos star was key to Brazil's charge to Confederations Cup glory in 2013, picking up the Golden Ball after being named the tournament's best player, and his international team-mate has no doubt he will light up this summer's finals on home soil once again.

"Our strength has always been the collective quality of our group," Thiago Silva was quoted as saying by Mundo Deportivo. "We're good as a team, we're ready and we hope to have a great World Cup.

"But certainly Neymar is a triumph of individuality. Neymar will be the World Cup's star."

Brazil are the pre-tournament favourites heading into the World Cup as they bid to claim their sixth global crown, and Thiago Silva insists the squad are fully confident they can live up to the weight of expectation.

"We have confidence we can win," added the Paris Saint-Germain skipper.

"I will do it for all of us, all Brazilians, to live that special moment."

'Happiness is worth 100 hours of tactics' - Del Bosque

    414313_heroa.jpg

Boosting team morale is the key behind Spain's chances of back-to-back World Cup titles, according to coach Vicente del Bosque.

Defending champions Spain are amongst the favourites to win the World Cup, though they must navigate their way through a tricky group after being drawn alongside Netherlands, Chile and Australia.

Despite the double European champions boasting a star-studded squad which includes Xavi, Andres Iniesta, David Silva, Diego Costa and Iker Casillas, Del Bosque believes it is the happiness within the camp which is the most important factor behind their success.

"A happy team is worth more than 100 hours of tactics," Del Bosque told El Pais.

"It's good for any business that the employees are content. In football, if the kids are happy, we've won."

Del Bosque added: "It's best to humanise the group, reminding them that they are modest people and where they come from."

Team harmony has not been a strong point of Spanish football, with the rivalry between Barcelona and Real Madrid causing a great divide within the dressing room over the years.

Del Bosque admits that while Spain are world and European champions, the Barca and Real rivalry still causes some tension.

"They are nice people," he said.

"But the Barca players sit together as do Madrid's. That happened in my time, it's not a symptom of anything.

"A quarrel (in public) is a hindrance. I can't get upset because I have to make quick decisions and have to be moderate in my gestures.

"On the bench and in the field we have to avoid arrogance."

Spain kick-off their World Cup campaign against Group B rivals the Netherlands on June 13 - a repeat of the 2010 final in South Africa.

'What a joke' - Rossi riled over World Cup snub

    415542_heroa.jpg

Fiorentina forward Giuseppe Rossi has expressed his frustration after being left out of the Italy squad for the World Cup.

The 27-year-old missed much of the Serie A season due to a recurrence of a serious knee injury, yet still managed to score 16 goals in 21 league appearances for Vincenzo Montella's men in 2013-14.

The former Manchester United youngster had hoped to force his way into Cesare Prandelli's World Cup plans and was involved from the start in Saturday's friendly against Republic of Ireland at Craven Cottage.

However, Prandelli opted to leave out Rossi at the expense of Mario Balotelli, Antonio Cassano, Alessio Cerci, Ciro Immobile and Lorenzo Insigne, and the striker has since hit out at suggestions he was dropped due to his unwillingness to compete physically against defenders.

"Everyone says out of shape: ask anyone the results from the tests during the week and the game," Rossi wrote on his official Twitter account on Monday.

"You will be suprised. Challenges? Fear?? What a joke…

"I get there thinking before the defender. Next time, as an amateur, I will wait for the defender to get kicked.

"Small details to which I hold. Now the most important thing, however, is to cheer Italy. Forza Italia! #quintastella."

Italy begin their World Cup campaign against England in Manaus on June 14.

'I didn't like anything' - Scolari fumes over Brazil training efforts

    405271_heroa.jpg

Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari declared Sunday's training was "all wrong", indicating his starting line-up is far from confirmed.

Scolari split his 23-man squad into two teams a number of times over the weekend for practice games as the 65-year-old coach experimented with different potential starting XIs.

But after Sunday's training session in Teresopolis, Scolari indicated he may have to rethink his preferred starting side ahead of the World Cup, with a friendly against Panama coming up on Tuesday.

"I did not like the training, I did not like anything, all wrong," Scolari told Globo TV.

"When I do not like something I have to find a solution, put it on the field, until I'm satisfied."

Paulinho, Fernandinho and Thiago Silva will all likely miss the clash with Panama on Tuesday due to minor injuries, with Scolari particularly eager to rest the Paris Saint-Germain star.

"Thiago is recuperating...we have two friendly games before the World Cup and it is preferable that he gets better," Scolari told Fox Sports.

Hernanes played alongside Luis Gustavo in Sunday's practice game and could start in midfield versus Panama.

Oscar and Daniel Alves could also be benched after they were swapped into the second XI on Sunday for Ramires and Maicon.

I'll be better next year, warns Bale

    410623_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid attacker Gareth Bale has warned he will be "even better" next season after firing his side to the Champions League and Copa del Rey in 2013-14.

After initially struggling for form and fitness following his world-record €100 million move from Tottenham last summer, Bale played a pitoval role in the capital club's triumphs under Carlo Ancelotti last season.

The Wales international scored a brilliant solo goal to clinch the Copa final against Barcelona before heading his side's second in the 4-1 win over Atletico Madrid in Lisbon which brought and end to Madrid's long-awaited 10th European crown.

And Bale has now fired a warning to his side's rivals that he wants to become stronger in his second season in Spain as he looks to help Madrid become the first team to successfully defend the modern Champions League.

"I'm very happy at Real Madrid and next year I'm sure I'll be better," he said during a visit to Indonesia.

"Next year I want to retain the Champions League to become the first team to do so consecutively."

Bale notched an impressive 22 goals and 16 assists in 44 games in all competitions for Madrid last season.

Varane: I'm not thinking about Chelsea interest

    415203_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane insists he is fully focused on the World Cup amid interest from Premier League club Chelsea.

The central defender has been tipped to reunite with former Real boss Jose Mourinho at Chelsea after David Luiz agreed to depart Stamford Bridge for Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain.

Varane was an ever-present during Mourinho's final season in charge of the Madrid club, who eventually finished second behind Barcelona in 2012-13.

But the 21-year-old is not thinking about his club future as Didier Deschamps' France prepare to face Switzerland, Ecuador and Honduras in Group E at the World Cup in Brazil.

"Right now, I'm not thinking about (the interest from Chelsea), we have the World Cup ahead of us," Varane told French football programme Telefoot.

"We have a young, motivated team that can do great things and has no limits.

"I love the national team and contribute everything I have to them. My goal is to become a starter.

"(Real Madrid assistant Zinedine Zidane) knows what it means to win the World Cup and it's great talking to him about it."

While he refused to shed much light on his future, Varane was prepared to reflect on Real's triumphant Champions League display.

Real claimed their 10th European crown after overcoming La Liga champions and city rivals Atletico Madrid 4-1 in Lisbon on May 24.

It was Real's first Champions League title since 2001-2002, when they edged Bayer Leverkusen 2-1 in Glasgow.

"La Decima is something magnificent," he said. "My team-mates have waited a long time for this.

"This is truly the highlight of my career. It was like I was in a bubble after the game. There was excitement and happiness."

Mandzukic a huge loss for Croatia, claims Dante

    392791_heroa.jpg

Bayern Munich defender Dante believes Croatia will struggle to replace his club team-mate Mario Mandzukic for their curtain-raising World Cup clash in just 11 days' time.

The 28-year-old was sent off in the play-off clash with Iceland in November and will subsequently be banned from the meeting with the hosts as the finals in Brazil kick off next week.

But Dante has warned his Selecao colleagues that Croatia will still pose a threat even if they are missing their suspended star striker.

"I think Croatia will miss Mandzukic a lot," Dante explained at a press conference. "It's hard to replace a player like him, he's a fighter. But we have to be careful, even if he’s not playing."

He added: "We started to talk a little about Croatia. Marcelo always mentions [Luka] Modric, who likes to switch sides and play high tempo.

"We exchange some information to get to know them better, as Felipao [Luiz Felipe Scolari] said once, to 'mentalise' our opponents. It's important that this kind of talk takes place. We know their qualities and weaknesses. This will make a difference when the time comes."

The 30-year-old centre-back went on to describe a 'tense' Sunday practice with his Brazil team-mates which left head coach Scolari less than impressed.

"It's important to communicate well, to correct the wrong plays and try not to repeat that on a match. I'm glad players are acting like this," he said.

"If the boss said he’s not happy with our [practice] performance, I don't think it's for me to comment."

Dante may be a fixture at the heart of the Bayern defence, but he knows his place in Brazil’s World Cup set-up is as an able deputy to Paris Saint-Germain captain Thiago Silva and his soon-to-be team-mate David Luiz.

"We have to leave our personal goals behind," he said. "Everyone should focus on winning the title for the Brazilian people. We aren’t here to prove something to anyone. We have to focus on the Selecao.

"As for the competition for places, their [Thiago Silva and David Luiz] market value means less than the quality they have. They are amongst the three or four best defenders around.

"They proved they deserve to be in the line-up. My job is to train well. David and I are always talking, trying to improve our positioning. David is right-footed, I'm a lefty, it makes things easier. It's a great responsibility to replace Thiago like this, but that's why I'm here.

"I have been trying to make the most of experience, to enjoy every second, every practice, every team meeting, (saying) 'go on, this will be your last opportunity'. But the job is not over yet, we have goals to achieve.

"I'm happy I have won a lot of titles, but it's one thing to do that for the club, [and] another with the national team. It would be the icing on the cake, not only for Dante, but for Brazil."

Dante also revealed he could have been a first-choice at this World Cup, playing alongside Manchester City skipper Vincent Kompany, if he had accepted an offer made to him by Belgium five years ago.

"Back in 2009, I got an invitation from Belgium, to play for their national team, but the truth is, I never wanted to play for another country. My heart spoke louder, it would be better to chase my dream (of representing Brazil) than ending it prematurely," he added.

"This Belgium generation is very strong. I played with [Marouane] Fellaini before, they have great players. They are candidates to surprise at the World Cup. I'm sure they’ll make it difficult for a lot of teams."

Balotelli faces World Cup fitness race

    412573_heroa.jpg

AC Milan and Italy striker Mario Balotelli is facing a race to be fit in time for the opening game of the World Cup as a result of minor muscular problems.

The 23-year-old is set to be a crucial player in Cesare Prandelli's plans for the finals in Brazil this month, particularly after Giuseppe Rossi's omission from the squad.

Veteran Antonio Cassano and the internationally inexperienced trio of Alessio Cerci, Ciro Immobile and Lorenzo Insigne the alternatives in attack and the Azzurri will be desperate to ensure Balotelli is fully fit.

Italy team doctor Enrico Castellaci has revealed the former Manchester City man has been struggling with muscle fatigue during the pre-tournament camp in Coverciano, meaning he could potentially be a doubt for the clash with England in Manaus on June 14.

"He's having a few teething problems with his flexors and adductors," Castellaci is quoted as saying by La Gazzetta dello Sport.

"He was struggling a little when he arrived at Coverciano. They've [his muscles] been overworked these last few days and that's affected them."

Balotelli, who struck four times in Italy's World Cup qualifying campaign, scored 18 goals in 41 appearances for Milan in the 2013-14 campaign.

    Eto'o mocks Mourinho... yet again

    415460_heroa.jpg

Samuel Eto'o has yet again mocked Jose Mourinho after celebrating a goal in Cameroon's 2-2 friendly draw against Germany on Sunday night.

Mourinho was caught on camera lamenting the quality of the forwards at his disposal at a sponsors' event in Switzerland in February, and suggested that Eto'o could be older than he claims to be.

The 33-year-old striker netted the first goal against Joachim Low's side on Sunday, and repeated the celebration he first unveiled against Tottenham where he held his back in mock pain and used the corner flag as a walking stick.

Despite the previously strong relationship between the pair at Inter helping to secure Eto'o's signature last summer, the forward has since labelled Mourinho both a "fool" and a "puppet", and has been released by the Stamford Bridge side.

"Today, I am 33-years-old - and it is not because a fool called me an old man that you must believe it," Eto'o said on 15 May, while he believes he did more at his age than Mourinho's other striking options last season.

"Contrary to what a puppet says about my age, I am still physically fit. At 33, I feel really good. I have proven that I can do better than the younger players," he said a week later.

Goal understands that Eto'o is in talks with Chinese side Guangzhou Evergrande over a move, though his high wage demands may prove a stumbling block.

Another Chelsea forward, Andre Schurrle, also netted in the friendly as both Germany and Cameroon stepped up their preparations for the World Cup.

Cristiano Ronaldo leads Portugal squad selfie as World Cup preparations begin

    414981_heroa.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo has posted a 'selfie' of himself and his Portugal team-mates on social networking website Twitter, as they step up their preparations for the World Cup in Brazil this summer.

The Seleccao captain was missed by his team in their last warm-up match, a 0-0 draw against Greece at the Estadio Nacional.

The Real Madrid star had to watch from the stands due to a minor thigh problem, which has been troubling him since the closing stages of last season.

But the result doesn't seem to have affected squad spirit - Ronaldo posting the photo with the caption "a team representing a country!"

Paulo Bento's men will take on Mexico and the Republic of Ireland next, before their World Cup opener against heavily-fancied Germany.

The United States and Ghana are their other opponents in a tough-looking Group G.

    Immobile completes Borussia Dortmund move

    415787_heroa.jpg

Italy striker Ciro Immobile has put pen to paper on a five-year deal with Borussia Dortmund.

The 24-year-old, who was top scorer in Serie A last season for Torino, scoring 22 goals in 33 league games, will replace Robert Lewandowski, who is moving to Bayern Munich.

The Bundesliga giants' sporting director Michael Zorc believes the Italy international is a great signing for the club and believes he will fit into Jurgen Klopp's team perfectly.

"In Ciro Immobile we have got a flexible and dynamic attacker who has succeeded in an impressive way in a top European league," he told the club's official website.

"He will fit in perfectly with the outstanding qualities required by Borussia Dortmund."

Immobile's 22 league goals helped fire his club to seventh in Serie A and a place in next season's Europa League, after Parma, who finished sixth, were excluded from the competition for failing to pay a tax bill.

The forward has since been rewarded for his form by being included in Italy's final 23-man squad for the World Cup in Brazil, this summer.

He also started their last warm-up game, a 0-0 draw at Craven Cottage on Saturday, which was marred by Riccardo Montolivo's broken leg - which ruled him out of this summer's tournament.

Official: David Villa signs with New York City FC

    article-2646279-1E68C9C100000578-165_634x435.jpg

New York City FC have confirmed that Spain's all-time leading goalscorer David Villa has become their first-ever signing as an MLS club.

The former Valencia and Barcelona striker departs Atletico Madrid after just one season, having scored 13 league goals to help his side become Liga champions for the first time since 1996.

The forward will begin playing for New York City at the start of the 2015 MLS season, which will begin in March of that year, and will be the club's inaugural campaign in the competition.
“Throughout my career I've always tried to keep pushing myself to achieve new targets and this represents another important goal for me,” the 32-year-old told New York City's official website.

“I want to try and help MLS continue to grow, through playing, working hard, scoring goals and at the same time try to make New York City FC become the best team in the league.

"It's a real honor that the people who have formed the club have focused their attention on me.

"I'm keen to do the best I can, take on board that extra responsibility and prove my worth by repaying the confidence they have shown in me,” he added.

Meanwhile, City's CEO called the signing a historic event for the club.

“This is a historic and exciting moment for the City family and the building of New York City Football Club,” said Ferran Soriano.

“I know David really well; he is one of the best footballers in the world, a true winner and in an outstanding moment of his career. I’m sure New Yorkers will enjoy watching him play for their city,” he added.

Villa has won 94 caps for Spain, scoring 56 goals and was named in their 23-man squad for this summer's World Cup in Brazil.

    Lampard confirms Chelsea exit

    410473_heroa.jpg

Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard has confirmed he will leave the club this summer after 13 years at Stamford Bridge.

The England international made 648 apperances for the Blues after moving from West Ham United in 2001, scoring a club record 211 goals, but manager Jose Mourinho has chosen not to offer the veteran a new deal.

At 35, Lampard struggled to hold down a regular place in Mourinho's line-up during the 2013-14 campaign, making just 20 starts, and though he has hinted at retiring after the World Cup, rumours persist that he will move to the MLS.

"When I arrived at this fantastic club 13 years ago I would never have believed that I would be fortunate enough to play so many games and enjoy sharing in so much success. This club has become part of my life," he said in a statement.

"Roman Abramovich, the man who saved our Club and took us all to new levels. His desire to push the Club to the top of the football world has rubbed off on everyone.

"All the managers and coaches who have helped me develop my game during the time I have been here. I have learnt from every one of them.

"The club will move forward and as a Chelsea man I have no doubt that with the quality of the players that are there, they will continue with the success that we have all enjoyed over the past seasons.

"Thank you for the memories and keep making history!"

Lampard leaves Chelsea as one of the club's most successful players in their history, having won three Premier League titles, four FA Cups, two League Cups, the Champions League and the Europa League.

He joins international team-mate Ashley Cole in leaving the club, with Samuel Eto'o also set to leave as Mourinho looks to build on a trophyless season in West London.

    Chelsea interested in signing Fabregas

    i

Chelsea are considering a bid for Barcelona's Cesc Fabregas, sources have told ESPN FC, after initial contact between the clubs.
The Spanish side are looking to rejuvenate their squad in a complete overhaul this summer, and have made it known to the leading Premier League clubs that they would consider offers for Fabregas.

So far there has only been tentative interest, but it is now understood that Chelsea are giving serious weight to the idea. The London side's requirement to bolster their midfield are amplified by the fact that Frank Lampard will leave the club. Manchester United had significant interest in Fabregas last season, but the Old Trafford club currently have no plans to enter the race.

New manager Louis van Gaal is said to have drawn up a completely new list of targets, which resulted in the end of the pursuit of Bayern's Toni Kroos after months of work, and the Spanish midfielder is not on it. It remains to be seen, however, whether Chelsea's interest will cause that situation to change.
