Napoli get cold feet in Fellaini bid

    432367_heroa.jpg

Napoli's move for Manchester United midfielder Marouane Fellaini has stalled, Goal understands.

The Serie A club have expressed an interest in Fellaini and sporting director Riccardo Bigon was reported in the Italian press to have met the player and his representatives in Belgium this week.

The Old Trafford club are willing to listen to offers for the midfielder, who is not part of Louis van Gaal's first team plans, but want at least €15 million for a player they signed for €32m during the 2013-14 summer transfer window.

That transfer fee is high for Napoli, who subsequently enquired over a loan deal for the 26-year-old.

However, United would only entertain loaning Fellaini out this summer if the player's €125,000-a-week wages were paid by Napoli, who could not afford to pay the player's salary in full.

Napoli are in the market for a midfielder and made an enquiry regarding Tottenham midfielder Etienne Capoue earlier in the summer, whilst an agreement in principle is in place for Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva to be reunited with Rafa Benitez in a season-long loan deal.

Spurs midfielder Sandro has also been considered as an option, but the Italian club were eager to pursue the possibility of signing Fellaini.

Napoli are still keen to sign Fellaini if United change the conditions of the transfer, but the deal is currently at an impasse.

Vidic tells Inter: Sign my Man Utd mate Hernandez

    438210_heroa.jpg

Inter defender Nemanja Vidic has advised the Serie A outfit to make a move for his former Manchester United team-mate Javier Hernandez in their search for a new striker.

The Giuseppe Meazza side are keen to add some more firepower to their squad this summer and have been linked with players such as Fernando Torres (Chelsea), Edin Dzeko (Manchester City) and the aforementioned Hernandez in the past few months.

Vidic does not need to think twice, however, over who would be the best option and believes the Mexico international is the right man for the San Siro side.

"Chicharito has done some great things and scored decisive goals for Manchester United, in particular under Sir Alex Ferguson," Vidic was quoted as saying by La Gazzetta dello Sport.

"He is a very strong striker, a traditional No.9 who has an eye for goal.

"But in the end it's [sporting director] Piero Ausilio's decision and he knows what he's doing."

The 26-year-old joined United from Guadalajara in the summer of 2010 and has since made over 100 Premier League appearances for the Old Trafford side.

Hernandez's current contract with the 2012-13 champions is due to expire in the summer of 2016.

Ronaldinho could make Australia move, says agent

    439619_heroa.jpg

Ronaldinho could be the next high-profile name to join the A-League according to player agent Lou Sticca, who helped bring in Juventus legend Alessandro Del Piero.

The 34-year-old left Atletico Mineiro earlier this week and Sticca thinks there will be plenty of interest from the A-League in the former Barcelona and AC Milan attacker."Some calls have already been made and now it's up to A-League clubs to make a play for him," he told Fox Sports.

"Anything's possible and he's exactly the sort we should be bringing here.
"Australia would be a new frontier for him. He'd love the lifestyle and the way fans would respect him."Ronaldinho's globally recognisable and an entertainer."

Melbourne City are allegedly in the race for Ronaldinho's signature after previously already securing the services of David Villa on loan, while Sydney FC have also been eyeing a new marquee name after the recent departure of Del Piero.

    Mourinho: Modric rejected Chelsea move

    421822_heroa.jpg

Jose Mourinho has revealed he approached Luka Modric about a possible move to Chelsea but the Croatia international rejected him to stay at Real Madrid.

The 28-year-old midfielder joined the Spanish club from Tottenham in 2012 and worked under Mourinho for a season before the Portuguese left for Chelsea.

Reports have suggested that the pair could be reunited at Stamford Bridge this summer but Mourinho claims Modric will remain at Madrid.

"I called Modric only privately but he doesn't want [to join] Chelsea,” Mourinho told Croatian newspaper Sportske Novosti.

"You know I really appreciate Luka Modric and his qualities. But he stays in Real Madrid.”

Modric made 49 appearances in all competitions for Madrid last season, scoring two goals and providing eight assists, while Manchester United have also been linked with a bid for the 28-year-old.

Mathieu: I'll prove Barca right for spending €20m

    438369_heroa.jpg

Jeremy Mathieu is determined to silence his critics and prove Barcelona right for spending €20 million on him ahead of the 2014-15 campaign.

Question-marks have been raised over whether the former Valencia defender has what it takes to succeed at the Camp Nou side and whether he's worth his hefty transfer fee at the age of 30, but Mathieu is confident that he will become an instant hit at Barca.

"It’s difficult to join a team after someone like Carles Puyol leaves, but I will show Barca that they made a good choice in signing me," the defender told Barca TV.

"I will give 100 per cent of myself and I hope everything goes well on the pitch.

"Being 30 gives you more tranquillity and experience when you talk to the press and deal with the atmosphere of big clubs. I’m very ready for the demands and pressure.

"I won’t have any problems when it comes to finding my place in the team. But for now, I have to do all my talking on the pitch.

"I came to Barca to win all of the titles that I’ve haven’t won yet."

The 30-year-old could make his unofficial Barcelona debut in Saturday's friendly against Nice.

Shaw not fit enough, claims Van Gaal

    438652_heroa.jpg

Louis van Gaal claims Luke Shaw has not yet reached an acceptable level of fitness, with the Manchester United left-back asked to train on his own during pre-season.

Shaw, who represented England at the recent World Cup finals in Brazil, completed a high-profile move to United from Southampton last month.

However, it would appear he has work to do if he is to earn a place in Van Gaal's line-up for the Premier League opener against Swansea City at Old Trafford on August 16.

Shaw trained separately from his team-mates at Washington's FedEx Field, ahead of United's International Champions Cup fixture against Inter, before sitting out parts of Monday's session.

Asked to explain why, Van Gaal said: "He is okay, but I am always a trainer who sees individuals and what they need. He needs to be fit and is not very fit or fit enough to do what I want. He needs to train individually until he is fit."

Van Gaal admits he is unsure how long it will take for Shaw to reach a level of fitness he finds acceptable, but says he has received positive messages from the club's fitness team.

"I cannot judge how long that will take, but I see what I see," added Van Gaal. "I have spoken with him and we have made a programme for him. He agreed with me.

"How long? I don't know. I have heard good messages from Strud [United fitness coach Tony Strudwick], but we have to see."

James destined for greatness, says Del Piero

    437660_heroa.jpg

Juventus legend Alessandro Del Piero has taken the time to praise new Real Madrid signing James Rodriguez and believes the Colombia international is destined for greatness.

Madrid paid Monaco €80 million for the creative midfielder, while also spending €25m to lure Toni Kroos away from Bayern Munich.

Del Piero feels the Champions League holders have strengthened well ahead of the 2014-15 campaign by bagging the duo, whom both excelled at the World Cup.

"Madrid reinforced the squad well. James is an incredible player – he’s young and has a great future ahead of him," Del Piero was quoted as saying by AS.

"And Kroos will fit in perfectly as well. He is a midfielder who will play an important role for Real Madrid."

Del Piero then went on to voice his admiration for Carlo Ancelotti, with whom he worked at Juventus between 1999 and 2001, and branded him the ultimate trainer.

"Ancelotti is the best coach of all time and I am delighted for him that he won ‘La Decima’ with Madrid. That was a special moment for him and for Real Madrid."

The 55-year-old replaced Jose Mourinho as Madrid boss in the summer of 2013 and won the Copa del Rey and Champions League in his first year in charge at the Santiago Bernabeu.

    Simeone: Atletico success no fluke

    437180_heroa.jpg

Diego Simeone has stressed that Atletico Madrid's La Liga triumph last season was the logical result of their hard work after the club had already won five trophies over the previous four years.

Atleti bagged their first league title in 18 years in the 2013-14 campaign, stunning favourites Barcelona and Real Madrid, while Simeone's men also went within seconds of winning the Champions League.

While Atletico's La Liga success was considered one of the fairytale stories of last season across Europe, Simeone - who has been in charge at the Vicente Calderon since December 2011 - claimed it had been coming.

The Vicente Calderon side won the Europa League in 2012, while they also won the Uefa Super Cup after each of the aforementioned titles, as well as scooping up the 2013 Copa del Rey.
"Last year was no fluke, it was a consequence of what has been going on at the club," Simeone told AS.

"First it was [winning] the Europa League, then the European Super Cup, Copa del Rey, third in the League and the following year the Liga title and the Champions League final."

Simeone added that with the additions of - amongst others - Mario Mandzukic, Antoine Griezmann and Jan Oblak, plus the retention of a large chunk of last season's squad, there is no reason Atletico cannot challenge the likes of Real and Barca again.

"The technical department have been working through all of this during the past 40 days.

"Filipe Luis left and Guilherme Siqueira came in; Thibaut Courtois has gone while Miguel Angel Moya and Oblak are now on board; up front we've lost Diego Costa and Mandzukic has arrived."Griezmann will give us the velocity we've lacked and needed. You don't create a team from just 11 players but from 18 or 20."

West Ham snatch Jenkinson loan deal

    439323_heroa.jpg

Arsenal defender Carl Jenkinson is set to turn down a move to Hull City and seal a loan switch to West Ham United, Goal understands.

Hull made a €3.75 million bid for the right-back, which the Hammers were not willing to match, but Jenkinson's desire to remain in London has persuaded Arsenal to allow him to move on loan to the Boleyn Ground.

And Hull boss Steve Bruce has admitted defeat in the race for the full-back, telling Talksport: “I think there were about five or six clubs who would be interested in Carl Jenkinson. He’s a very, very good player.

“I think Sam Allardyce is in the box seat, because of being in London.

“It was someone who we showed an interest in. But when a really good young player comes out of Arsenal, or one of the big clubs, then a club like ours will always be looking at them.

“He’s got about five or six clubs to choose from but from what I understand he wants to stay in London.”

Goal understands Jenkinson still believes he has a future at the Emirates Stadium, despite the summer arrival of €10m France international Mathieu Debuchy from Newcastle United.

Meanwhile, 19-year-old defender Calum Chambers has also moved to north London from Southampton in a deal worth €20m.

West Ham boss Sam Allardyce is a big fan of Jenkinson and will be delighted to have beaten Steve Bruce to the full-back's signature.

Jenkinson, 22, left Charlton for Arsenal in 2011 as a teenager but has failed to hold down a regular first team place at the Emirates.

Big European teams want Reus, claims agent

    436242_heroa.jpg

Marco Reus' agent Dirk Hebel has claimed that a number of major European teams are closely monitoring his client's situation at Borussia Dortmund with a view to a potential transfer.

The Germany international has a contract with BVB until June 2017, but he's available for a limited fee release clause of €35 million in the summer of 2015.

Dortmund are keen to hold on to Reus, though, and have offered the 25-year-old a payrise in an attempt to convince him to agreeing to remove the buyout clause from his current deal.

However, contract talks have so far been unsuccessful and the attacker's representative has refused to rule out a move elsewhere.

"Marco would make any big European team stronger," Hebel was quoted as saying by Bild.

"That's why it's completely normal that a number of these major European teams are interested in signing him.

"But his main priority for now is to get back to top fitness and return to the pitch. Everything else is not important at this stage."

Reus, who missed Germany's successful World Cup campaign due to injury, has been linked with clubs such as Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Manchester United and Liverpool in the past few months.

Sturridge: I'm ready to replace Suarez

    439203_heroa.jpg

Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge insists he is ready to step up in the absence of Luis Suarez and has urged his team-mates to do likewise.

Sturridge scored 21 Premier League goals last season, 10 fewer than the now-departed Suarez, who left Anfield to join Catalan giants Barcelona earlier this summer.

And the England star is aware he will have to improve to fill the Uruguayan's boots, but he believes the responsibility should not fall squarely on him, with a number of players - including Lazar Markovic, Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana - joining the club following Suarez's departure.

"In terms of next season for the goals, I'll step up myself and everyone has to," Sturridge is quoted as saying by The Sun.

"It was a unique partnership and I wish Luis all the best. We shared some good times together.

"We created history with our goals and became the most successful Liverpool partnership in one season.

"But we will move forward as a team. It's everyone's job to do that, the new boys who've come in as well as the players who have been there all season."

Liverpool finished runners-up to Manchester City last season but have spent big this summer in a bid to go one better in 2014-15 and Sturridge is excited by the signings made by manager Brendan Rodgers.

"Liverpool's a huge club, an elite club and people don't realise that," he said. "This is a huge club, with a lot of players who can step up. Luis has left. That's football, he's moved on.

"For me, with the signings the manager has made - exciting players, young players, up-and-comers as they call them - we are going to have that winning mentality.

"Players come and go in football, that's the nature of the game. Some will remain at a club their whole career, like Stevie Gerrard, and some will move.

"It doesn't matter. We will still have the mentality to move forward, be an exciting squad, playing attacking football and that's the Liverpool way. We will continue to do that."

Van Gaal: 3-5-2 system gives Manchester United flexibility

    438196_heroa.jpg

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal says his 3-5-2 system gives him the ability to select more of his top players in his starting XI.

Van Gaal made the ideal start to his tenure in charge of United, leading them to a 7-0 friendly win over LA Galaxy, before the club recorded a 3-2 triumph over Roma to kick-start their International Champions Cup campaign.

And ahead of their second match of the pre-season tournament against Inter in Maryland on Tuesday, Van Gaal explained his decision to utilise the formation, with the likes of Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie, Javier Hernandez, Danny Welbeck and Juan Mata all at the 62-year-old's disposal.

"That's why I chose this system, I can play them all. But Hernandez can also play in the striker's position, so can Welbeck," the Dutch tactician told Sky Sports.

"Rooney can play at No.10 and number nine and he tells me he can also play at number 11 and number seven, but I prefer him at No.9 or No.10.

"When you look at the quality of your players you see Rooney, Van Persie, Hernandez, Mata, Welbeck, [Marouane] Fellaini, [Ander] Herrera – a lot of players can play this system.

"So with this system, two strikers can play, the No.10 can play, two midfielders can play, so the specialists become the wing-backs."

Van Gaal also revealed his reasons for accepting the United job, after being identified as the ideal successor to sacked David Moyes.

"It was not an instant 'yes' because I had other offers also. So I had to think about it," he said.

"But I chose 'yes' because of the big challenge. I have been at Ajax – the biggest club in the Netherlands – I went to Barcelona – the biggest club in Spain – and then I go to Bayern Munich, also the number one in Germany.

"So when Manchester United came I thought I had to say 'yes'."

:DNo mind games with Mourinho, says Van Gaal

    438724_heroa.jpg

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal insists that there will be no risk of confrontation between him and his "friend", Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho.

The Dutchman, newly installed at Old Trafford, indicated on Saturday that he would talk to his Blues counterpart about his comments on the Red Devils' signing of Luke Shaw.

Mourinho is well known for playing mind-games with his rivals, while Van Gaal himself is an outspoken figure, but the 62-year-old does not expect any wars of words with the Portuguese or anyone else.

"I don't think I will fall out with him. Mourinho is my friend," he told reporters. "I don't think I will fall out with all the other managers. I have full respect for all my colleagues.

"For me mind games are not so interesting. I have to manage my club. That is already difficult enough. I am not concerned with other clubs or other managers."

United and Chelsea will meet for the first time in 2014-15 at Old Trafford on October 26.
