Kehl stands down as Borussia Dortmund captain

    381881_heroa.jpg

Sebastian Kehl has stepped down as Borussia Dortmund captain and vowed to help his successor as he enters the final season of his career.

The 34-year-old announced in March that he will retire at the end of his contract in June 2015, and he has now decided to step aside as captain to allow Dortmund to begin building for the future.

Kehl, who joined the club in 2002, has led a successful period in Dortmund's history, helping the German giants to two Bundesliga titles and the DFB Pokal since taking over the armband from Christian Worns in 2008.

However, after suffering with knee injuries in recent seasons, the midfielder believes now is the right time to allow someone else to lead the side under his guidance over the next year.

"I've decided to finish being captain from right now," Kehl told the club's official website. "I already told this decision to the club and the coach at the end of the last season.

"I was very proud to be captain of Borussia Dortmund, I was very pleased about it, it was a great responsibility for me.

"But responsibility also means for me to care for the team and for the club. And that is how I have always lived and understood my role.

"Now I want to deliver the baton, that makes absolute sense for me and it's also sustainable.

"Now there will be the possibility to help my follower as captain and to support him with all my experience from my last years."

Kehl hopes to finish his career with another league title and believes that, although Bayern Munich have dominated in the past two seasons, Dortmund can claim some silverware this season.

"I will try to give my best in the last season of my career and to play as much as possible," he added. "My role on and off the pitch will not change.

"The greatest thing would be to win a title at the end, that would be something very special for me, and I also wish this for my follower as captain because it would be a perfect introduction for him."

Meanwhile, winger Jakub Blaszczykowski has confirmed he plans to be fully fit for the start of the new season after battling back from a cruciate ligament injury suffered in January.

"It's gone well. I hope to be back in full training. At the start of the season I'll be on the pitch," the Poland international was quoted as saying by Bild.

"The important thing is you stay mentally strong. My wife and kids helped me during this time, I had a positive feeling from the first day after the injury.

"My goal has always been to come back just as strong as I was before the injury."

Retirement is not a possibility - Ronaldinho

    439620_heroa.jpg

Brazil legend Ronaldinho has confirmed that he will leave Atletico Mineiro but has stated that he is not yet ready to retire.

The 34-year-old has enjoyed a remarkable career, notably with Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona and AC Milan, while he has won 99 caps and lifted the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea with his national team.

Since leaving San Siro in 2010, the Porto Alegre-born player has returned to Brazil, playing with Flamengo and latterly with Atletico - with whom he lifted the Copa Libertadores - and he believes his career still has one final chapter.

"Retirement, for now, is not a possibility," he told the media.

"Right now my brother [agent Roberto de Assis] is doing all the thinking. Starting next week, we'll talk about my future. I'll take these days to just stay away from everything and get some rest. But I know his phone has been ringing a lot."

The attacker departs the Belo Horizonte side on good terms and admitted that he was happy with his spell there, which included the club's first Libertadores success, as well as his career as a whole.

"I was happy enough to be champion at every club I've ever played, and they all have a special part in my heart," he said. "Barcelona is the club where I've stayed for longest. But Atletico has touched me very deeply. Winning a title the club had never won before, that sort of thing sticks with you. Galo is very special to me, for everything."

Ronaldinho, who is widely considered one of the 21st century's greatest players - having won the Fifa World Player of the Year prize in 2004 and 2005 - has been linked with moves to Boca Juniors and the A-League, amongst others.

Carlos Alberto hits back at Dunga over Brazil criticism

    440042_heroa.jpg

Former Brazil technical director Carlos Alberto Pereira has hit back at Dunga for comments made about the performance of the Selecao at the World Cup.

The 50-year-old is embarking upon his second spell in charge of his nation but provoked the previous regime when he claimed that Brazil must "toughen up" in the wake of the frequent emotional reactions from the players during the tournament this summer.

Dunga also criticised Neymar's perceived focus on marketing, singling out the attacker's decision to wear a hat with his own logo on it during an interview rather than sport the team crest and colours.

Carlos Alberto, who led the Selecao to the World Cup title in 1994, has swiftly defended the Barcelona star and insists the emotive singing of the national anthem should be praised - just as it was during the Confederations Cup.

"I agree with him [Dunga] when he says that, perhaps, excessive emotion might have taken the focus out of what was really important. But it's not a matter of agreeing or disagreeing. It's a moment thing," he told Extra. "At the Confederations Cup, it was great, it was wonderful. Now, not so much. Where's the truth?

"The marketing behind Neymar did not get in the way," he went on. "Neymar was involved in absolutely everything, all the time. He was dedicating himself in training, he wasn't shying away from work and he's not the type of player to sit quietly at the medical department.

"And he wasn't stepping out on the pitch to play or to train wearing a hat. I swear to you I don't even know when was it that he wore a hat."

Brazil crashed out of the competition after suffering an embarrassing 7-1 loss to Germany in the semi-final and then succumbed to Netherlands in the third-place playoff, yet Carlos Alberto does not feel the Selecao flopped entirely.

"We were certainly not a 10, but not a zero either, because we made it to the semi-finals, which hadn't happen since 2002," he explained. "I'd say we were from medium to good."

The 71-year-old also reiterated that he has now retired from coaching and is not actively seeking a new post.

Official: Everton sign Lukaku in €35m deal

    i

Everton have completed the signing of Romelu Lukaku from Chelsea on a five-year deal for a fee of £28 million (€35m).The 21-year-old spent last season on loan at Goodison Park, scoring 15 Premier League goals, and has now made his move permanent after not featuring in Blues boss Jose Mourinho's plans for the new campaign.

Everton made a breakthrough in agreeing terms on a deal for the Belgium international - a fee that eclipses the previous €19m club-record signing of Marouane Fellaini.

Lukaku, who enjoyed an extended break after his World Cup exploits with Belgium, was thought to be keen to be reunited with Roberto Martinez, under whom he flourished last term. And, upon completing his move, he told Everton's official website: "I am really excited about rejoining Everton. I had a fantastic experience last season and a great relationship with the manager, the chairman, the staff, the players and the fans.

"I can't wait to get started again and I'm looking forward to a successful season."Manager Martinez added: "Welcoming Romelu Lukaku back to Everton on a permanent basis is the news that all Evertonians wanted to hear.

"We know that Romelu is still a young man and the potential that he has is quite unique, and we are desperate to see him enjoying his football and to watch him grow as footballer in the years to come."The arrival of Rom is more than just a signing, it's the fruition of a lot of hard work to get the player we wanted. This is a big moment for Everton's history and the perfect way of getting the squad ready for the start of the season."

Chelsea have already moved to overhaul a frontline that misfired last season, with Diego Costa joining from Atletico Madrid and club legend Didier Drogba returning on a one-year deal.

Manchester City 2-2 Liverpool (1-3 on pens): Liverpool down Man City after shoot-out

    440154_heroa.jpg

Stevan Jovetic struck a brace, either side of Jordan Henderson's crisp finish for the Reds, before Raheem Sterling equalised in the 85th minute. After normal time finished 2-2, Brendan Rodgers' men were the better side in the shootout, claiming it 3-1 courtesy of two Simon Mignolet saves.

Jovetic opened the scoring in the 53rd minute after a defensive stumble from Reds midfielder Steven Gerrard, before Henderson's reply six minutes later. However, the Montenegrin reinstated City's lead in the 67th minute, poking home an opportunistic effort to regain the lead for Manuel Pellegrini's outfit.

Sterling struck late in regulation with a well-taken finish, before City crumbled in the shoot-out, as each of Aleksandar Kolarov, Yaya Toure and Jesus Navas all failed to convert from the spot.

Jovetic was influential for the Premier League champions early, linking effectively with strike partner Edin Dzeko.Dzeko put the ball in the back of the net in the 26th minute, however the Bosnia-Herzegovina international was correctly flagged for offside.

City had the most chances in the opening 45 minutes, but arguably Liverpool had the best opportunity to score - when Rickie Lambert's point-blank range header was kept out by City custodian Willy Caballero.

The former Southampton striker was at the back post for Henderson's chipped cross, but Lambert's header went straight at the chest of Caballero - whose reflex save kept the game scoreless.

The contest continued in its attacking nature with Liverpool substitute Jack Robinson almost opening the scoring in the 50th minute, only to be denied by fellow sub and City custodian Joe Hart, who rushed off his line to clear the danger.
But three minutes later, Navas danced around Robinson on City's right wing, and delivered a cross into the goalmouth.Gerrard's attempt to block failed, as he let the ball through his legs, with Jovetic swooping on the remnants to put City ahead.

Henderson's finish brought the partisan Liverpool crowd to life, completing fine lead-up work from Sterling and Daniel Sturridge to mark City's sheet for the fifth straight match in pre-season.

Jovetic was on hand again to cap a man-of-the-match performance, incidentally blocking Kelechi Iheanacho's strike but swooping on the loose ball to poke City ahead.Sterling showed his class to finish with less than six minutes of normal time remaining.

Guardiola vows to ward off World Cup hangover

    439080_heroa.jpg

Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola is fully confident his side's Germany stars will not be affected by their triumphant World Cup campaign this season.

The likes of Philipp Lahm, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Manuel Neuer, Jerome Boateng, Mario Gotze and Thomas Muller all played pivotal roles in Germany's run to the title in Brazil this summer, leading to some concerns over the players' fitness and motivation heading into the 2014-15 club campaign.

Guardiola guided Barcelona to La Liga and Champions League titles in 2010-11 after Xavi, Andres Iniesta, Carles Puyol and others returned from winning the World Cup in South Africa with Spain, and the former midfielder has no concerns over his ability to achieve a similar feat during the coming year.

"I'm sure we will play a very good season. It's not the first time I need to master such a situation. I'll deal with it," he told reporters.

Bayern are currently in America preparing for their friendly against Chivas in New Jersey on Friday and Guardiola is looking forward to a stern test against the Mexicans.

"We're not here just for fun - we want to give the fans in the stadium something," he said.

"It will be a good test to see where we stand and what we still need to work on. It will help us in our preparation."

Defender David Alaba added that the players are eager to give American fans of football a positive image of the Bundesliga champions during their pre-season run.

"The anticipation is great. We want to give Americans a great impression of FC Bayern," he added.

Official: Southampton loan Bertrand from Chelsea

    267780_heroa.jpg

Southampton have signed Ryan Bertrand from Chelsea on a season-long loan deal.

Bertrand becomes the club's third signing of the summer, following the arrivals of Dusan Tadic and Graziano Pelle.

The 24-year-old made 17 league appearances last season, 16 of them while on loan at Aston Villa.

Upon completing his move, the left-back – who had been linked with Liverpool – told the Saints' official website: "For me personally, this is another chance to play and a chance to join a fantastic club that's moving in the right direction.

"With the set-up the club's got, the manager it has coming in and the ethos it has, I thought this was a perfect match.

"The manager's name speaks for itself, so to play under somebody like that will be good for me. His ethos and the way he plays matches my game.

"I had a lot of options and a lot of interest but, having met the people and spoken to the manager and seen what the club is about, in my mind this was the perfect decision.

"I'm looking to get games and to play regularly in the way and the formation that I like, and I'm sure that will benefit my game. I still think the best is yet to come from me."

Bertrand will replace Luke Shaw in the starting XI, the teenager having joined Manchester United earlier this summer.

Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert, Calum Chambers and Dejan Lovren have also left St Mary's this transfer window but the club are insistent that Tottenham targets Jay Rodriguez and Morgan Schneiderlin will remain at the club, despite the latter preparing to hand in a transfer request.

'I need a hug' - Scolari relieved to return to Gremio

    440004_heroa.jpg

Luiz Felipe Scolari admits he is looking forward to some more "affection" after being presented as the new head coach of Gremio on Wednesday.

The 65-year-old left his post as Brazil boss following the World Cup this summer, in which the host nation were hammered 7-1 in the semi-finals by Germany before losing the third-place playoff 3-0 to Netherlands.

Scolari has endured a difficult month after the Selecao's capitulation but could barely contain his delight at returning to the club with whom he won six titles in three years in the 1990s.

"I've been here twice before and always had a marvellous relationship," Scolari told a press conference at his unveiling at the Porto Alegre club. "I came back at this moment because I need a hug, some affection, people who know me and Gremio is the right place, because I know that the players and the supporters will be with me.

"Everyone knows that I'm a Gremio fan. The only invitation that I would accept is from Gremio.

"I'm at home and happy to be at Gremio again. There's nothing better than being here today. I am one of the pieces, but only one. Everyone has to work towards our goals now."

Scolari, who was greeted by close to 100,000 supporters at the airport prior to his arrival at the club, acknowledges he will forever be associated with the Germany result but maintains his earlier triumphs with Brazil - including winning the 2002 World Cup and 2013 Confederations Cup - should not be forgotten.

"If you ask me what I'm marked by, what I'll never forget, it's the 7-1. I know that. But the overall results do not allow people to speak badly about everything I did," he added.

"I'm the same person. Felipao had a difficult game and after that came to be reviled by 90 per cent of people. Not the general public, not fans, but mainly people linked to football through the press."

'In Pepe's eyes, I'm not human' - Keita accuses Real Madrid defender of racism

    439871_heroa.jpg

Roma midfielder Seydou Keita claims racist remarks made by Pepe earlier in his career were the reason behind his midweek confrontation with the defender.

Prior to Roma's International Champions Cup clash with Real Madrid, Keita threw a water bottle at Pepe after refusing to shake his hand, sparking a coming-together between both sets of players on the pitch.

Following the incident, Keita took to his official Twitter account to state that Pepe had racially abused him during his playing days with Barcelona, writing: "1. He called me a monkey during Madrid-Barca, 2. I did not shake his hand, 3. He spat on me, and after I threw the bottle, sorry for my attitude".

Speaking to RF1 later on Wednesday, the 34-year-old Mali international explained he had decided before the game not to shake the Portugal international's hand and was provoked into throwing the bottle when Pepe spat at him.

"At the time I played with Barcelona, Pepe called me a 'macaco', that is to say a monkey, and he spat on me. I told myself: 'This guy is worthless,'" he said.

"At the time, I did not speak publicly about it because it wasn't worth it. That's why I didn't shake his hand before the friendly. I even told my intention to my team-mate Mehdi Benatia. So I greeted everyone except him.

"And suddenly he came up behind me and spat on me. At the time, I had a bottle of water and I threw it at him. His team-mates saw us and they had the intention to strike me.

"It's true that I gave a bad image of myself and I apologise. But it's lucky we were on a football field because it's unacceptable that one man spits on another. I don't see why I would shake his hand, because in his eyes I'm not a human being.

"I don't want to talk to someone who does not consider me a human. His behaviour is unacceptable. Instead of asking why I didn't shake his hand, he preferred to spit on me.

"I'm not saying I'm a saint. Like everyone I have flaws, but I respect people."

Keita's comments come during a week in which racism has once more grabbed the headlines in Italian football, with Fifa demanding an investigation after FIGC vice-president Carlo Tavecchio referred to young African players moving to Serie A as "banana eaters".

Keita, however, does not believe racism is endemic in European football.

"No, we shouldn't generalise," he said. "I am African and I've played a long time in Europe. I have often met wonderful people.

"From time to time there are small-thinking ones who are not very nice, but I've rarely had to endure such behaviour. For me, that is too many. If some use football to say and do anything, it's a minority. I don't want to generalise."

Trezeguet joins ISL side Pune City as marquee player

    440002_heroa.jpg

Indian Super League (ISL) franchise Pune City have completed the signing of former Juventus star David Trezeguet.

The Frenchman was officially named the club's marquee player at the team launch in Mumbai on Wednesday after agreeing a one-year deal with the side co-owned by Bollywood actor Salman Khan and coached by former Napoli and Parma boss Franco Colomba.

Trezeguet joins former Arsenal duo Robert Pires and Freddie Ljungberg - as well as ex-Liverpool and Barcelona attacker Luis Garcia - in the tournament, which kicks off in October.

Trezeguet won the World Cup and European Championship with France in 1998 and 2000 respectively. He also holds the distinction of being the third highest all-time goalscorer for his country.

The prolific striker began his career with Atletico Platense at the age of eight and has played for Monaco, Juventus and River Plate, and spent last season on loan at Newell's Old Boys.

The 36 year-old has scored more than 300 goals in his career and was the Serie A Footballer of the Year in the 2001-02 season.

Mr Gaurav Modwel, CEO of Pune City, said: "By joining hands with the legends of football, FC Pune City brings international expertise to the team to nurture young talent and hopefully take football to a different level in a country where all other sports have been eclipsed by cricket."
