Rayo Vallecano 0-0 Atletico Madrid: Champions begin title defence with dour draw

    448810_heroa.jpg

Suspended Atletico Madrid boss watched on helplessly as his side began their Liga title defence with a dismal 0-0 draw at Rayo Vallecano on Monday night.

The Spanish champions made the short trip across the capital to Estadio Vallecas and failed to take their chances in an encounter where they fell short of their best.

Simeone was given an eight-game suspension for an explosive rant at an official during the Supercopa de Espana second-leg win over Real Madrid on Friday night and assistant coach German Burgos could not mastermind a win in his stead.

Atleti saw several key players depart during the close-season and new arrivals Mario Mandzukic, Raul Jimenez and Antoine Griezmann struggled to impose themselves.

Mandzukic wasted a couple of excellent opportunities in the first half, while Rayo posed the greater threat after the break.

Rayo came close to an unlikely win courtesy of Manucho in the latter stages as the visitors lost early ground on Barcelona and Real, who both began their campaigns with victories.

Simeone was keen to reiterate in the build-up that, although his side are defending champions, they remain underdogs in this season's title race.

And they were by no means convincing as their credentials were tested by Paco Jemez's new-look Rayo, who included six new signings in their starting XI.

Atleti took a little while to get going at Vallecas, but they eventually forced Cristian Alvarez into action with 18 minutes gone, as the Argentine raced out to tackle Griezmann on the edge of the area.

Two even better chances were presented to Mandzukic in the following nine minutes. The Croatian fired a first-time effort into the side-netting after Cristian Ansaldi's left-wing cross before going on to hit a tame effort straight at Alvarez following good work down the right by Juanfran.

Rayo displayed some eye-catching football at times, but regularly looked shaky at the back and Jimenez should have capitalised just before the break.

The Mexican failed to make contact with Koke's low cross just six yards from goal and proceedings remained goalless at half-time.

Goal-mouth action became particularly infrequent during the first 15 minutes of the second half. The closest either side came to hitting the target was in the 53rd minute, but Koke blazed over from the edge of the area after a well-worked free kick.

Proceedings livened up after the hour mark and Rayo threatened when Quini saw his 30-yard effort go just wide of the bottom-left corner.

Rayo's attacking presence continued to increase and Miguel Angel Moya was forced into an important save 18 minutes from time, palming away Manucho's calculated header.

Manucho saw another half-chance go to waste in the final 10 minutes as his tame over-head kick was denied by Moya and the two sides ultimately cancelled each other out, with the stalemate a fair result.

Manchester City 3-1 Liverpool: Jovetic & Aguero see off Reds

    448789_heroa.jpg

Premier League holders Manchester City continued a fine start to their title defence, with two goals from Stevan Jovetic setting them on their way to a 3-1 win over last year's runners-up, Liverpool.

The Reds had the best of the first half but failed to make their dominance count and the Montenegrin punished them shortly before the break by stealing a march on both Dejan Lovren and debutant Alberto Moreno to score.

Jovetic then combined with Samir Nasri on 55 minutes to give Manuel Pellegrini's side breathing room before Sergio Aguero struck immediately after coming on as a substitute.

Rickie Lambert looked to have bundled a header over the line for his first Liverpool goal towards the end but the last touch came off Pablo Zabaleta for an own goal, though City were nonetheless able to hold out for the win.

With new signing Mario Balotelli watching on after completing his move from AC Milan, Liverpool gave a debut to Moreno while Joe Allen returned for Lucas in midfield.

Zabaleta's recall for City enabled Gael Clichy to revert to left-back and the 29-year-old was at the heart of the hosts' good early play. Edin Dzeko and Yaya Toure both had sights of goal in the opening 15 minutes thanks to Clichy crosses but neither was able to stretch Mignolet.

Liverpool's midfield began to dominate possession following a cagey start and Daniel Sturridge finally tested Hart in the 33rd minute. Steven Gerrard executed a perfect pass to find the striker at the back post but, having escaped the attentions of Vincent Kompany, his fierce left-footed shot was pushed away.

Hart's efforts proved crucial for City as they went on to open the scoring through Jovetic with four minutes of the half remaining. As Moreno dallied on a knockdown from Lovren inside the Liverpool penalty area, the 24-year-old nipped in and lashed the ball through the legs of Mignolet.

Rodgers's side had the ball in the net four minutes after the break but the linesman's flag denied Sturridge, much to the relief of Kompany, who had misjudged a Glen Johnson cross.

To rub salt into the Liverpool wounds, City promptly doubled their lead as Jovetic completed a neat one-two with Nasri with a calm finish. The striker's flick ran perfectly into the Frenchman's stride and Nasri returned the ball to his unmarked team-mate to apply the finish.

The introduction of debutant Lazar Markovic breathed some life back into Liverpool but a ruthless City outfit extended their lead even further in the 69th minute. Jesus Navas's pass released Aguero in behind the Liverpool defence and the Argentine confidently fired low into the back of the net, just 23 seconds after replacing Dzeko.

Liverpool, who have now only won once in their last nine visits to City, grabbed a consolation with seven minutes to play as Zabaleta nudged the ball into his own goal. Sturridge showed good strength on the right and delivered a perfect cross to Lambert, whose header was saved by Hart before the loose ball struck the defender on the knee and dropped over the line.

There was further bad news for Liverpool as Johnson hobbled off after all three substitutions had been made, while Moreno appeared to turn his ankle in injury time but carried on.

Marcelo hails Ronaldo after Cordoba win: Cristiano always scores

    448749_heroa.jpg

Marcelo hailed Cristiano Ronaldo after Monday's Liga win over Cordoba, arguing that even if his team-mate is not fully fit, he "always scores".

Ronaldo's fitness has been the source of much concern since an injury-interrupted end to last season and the Portugal international's struggles at this summer's World Cup with thigh and hamstring problems.

However, after Karim Benzema had opened the scoring in Madrid's Liga opener at the Santiago Bernabeu, Roanldo sealed all three points with a terrific long-range strike in the dying seconds.

Blancos boss Carlo Ancelotti admitted afterwards that the Ballon d'Or holder is not yet in "optimal condition" but Marcelo argued that the 29-year-old does not have to be.

“We know that Cristiano always scores," the defender told reporters after the game. "We trust him and know what he will do for us.

“It is the start of the season and we all have to get better, but we gave everything to please the fans.

"We have the whole league to try and move forward."

The win over Cordoba was Pepe's 250th in a Madrid shirt and the defender was touched by the reception he received from the home crowd.

“I’m very happy to play so many matches and with the affection shown by the people," the centre-half enthused. "And to help the team to another win.

"We controlled the match well. People were perhaps expecting a more comfortable win, but we managed to get three points that are important to us."

Ancelotti: Neither Ronaldo nor Madrid in peak condition

    447720_heroa.jpg

Carlo Ancelotti conceded after Monday's laboured victory over Cordoba that neither Cristiano Ronaldo nor Real Madrid are in "optimum condition" as of yet.

Just three days after losing the second leg of their Supercopa de Espana clash with city rivas Atletico, Los Blancos kicked off their Liga campaign with a lacklustre 2-0 win at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Karim Benzema opened the scoring on the half-hour mark before Ronaldo secured all three points with a long-distance drive right at the death, but Ancelotti admitted afterwards that the Portugal international is still working his way back to full match fitness - just like the rest of his team-mates.

"He’s not in optimum condition; but we aren’t yet," the Italian coach told reporters. "We’ve been working on the aerobic performance. We need more rhythm.

"There was some tiredness because we’ve played every three days since August 12 and it’s not easy to play every three days in the pre-season.

"We were tired. We only played three days ago and it’s not easy to go straight back into action after that amount of rest.

“Having said that though, I think we controlled the game. We’re not at our best yet. We need to quicken the game up. But I’m sure that will come with time.”

Star summer signing James Rodriguez failed to shine at the Santiago Bernabeu but Ancelotti believes that the Colombia attacker needs time to adjust to a more withdrawn role.

"At the moment we’re trying James a little bit further back," the former Chelsea boss explained.

"He needs to get used to it, but he’s got the quality to do it well."

However, Ancelotti added that James will be given opportunities to play in attack, given he will not ask Benzema, Ronaldo and Gareth Bale to start every week.

"I’m sure the three strikers can’t play all the games," he acknowledged. "That would be impossible."

James' inclusion effectively resulted in Xabi Alonso dropping out, with Toni Kroos and Luka Modric having been selected in midfield.

Ancelotti insisted, though, that it would be a mistake to read too much into the ex-Liverpool man's exclusion.

"Xabi Alonso had played two games in a row and I wanted to give him a rest," he stated. "It’s hard to perform well every three days."

Madrid's next Primera Division outing comes on Sunday, when Ancelotti's men travel to San Sebastian to take on Real Sociedad.

Gomez: I will win back Germany place

    445575_heroa.jpg

Fiorentina forward Mario Gomez has vowed to win back his place in the Germany squad this season.

The former Bayern Munich striker suffered two serious injuries last season and even though he managed to return to action before the conclusion of the 2013-14 campaign, Joachim Low left the 29-year-old out of his squad for this summer's World Cup.

Gomez has already previously admitted that it was tough watching his country triumph in Brazil without him but he insists that all he is thinking about now is forcing his way back into the Germany squad ahead of Euro 2016.

"Of course, I would like to return to the national team again - and I will," the Viola attacker told Sport Bild Plus.

For now, though, Gomez's sole concern is on helping Fiorentina win Saturday's daunting Serie A opener against last season's runners-up, Roma, at the Stadio Olimpico.

"Our preparation so far has been good and we are ready for the start of the league," he insisted. "After the game against Roma, we will know where we stand."

Gomez will be determined to hit the ground running in Serie A as Germany face Argentina in a friendly in Dusseldorf on September 3 before kicking off their Euro 2016 qualification campaign against Scotland in Dortmund four days later.

:love:Manchester United agree Di Maria deal with Real Madrid

    448581_heroa.jpg

Manchester United have agreed a €81 million deal with Real Madrid for winger Angel Di Maria.

Goal reported on Saturday that the Premier League side had made a breakthrough in their attempts to sign the 26-year-old to Old Trafford, with the player having decided that he wanted to move to Old Trafford.

With talks between the two sides having accelerated in the last 24 hours, Di Maria has now arrived in Manchester and is expected to agree personal terms and complete a medical on Tuesday.

Goal understands that Louis van Gaal's side will offer Di Maria a wage packet that will eclipse Wayne Rooney's €360,000-per-week deal, including the Argentine's €6m signing-on fee and additional bonuses.

United will pay Madrid a British record fee in the region of €81m, including add-ons, for the former Benfica star, surpassing the €63m that Chelsea shelled out to Liverpool to take Fernando Torres to Stamford Bridge in 2011.

Goal revealed back in July that an agreement between the Premier League club and Real Madrid was close and Ancelotti confirmed on Sunday that Di Maria had said his goodbyes ahead of a move to Manchester.

Di Maria will add to the signings of Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera, Luke Shaw and Argentina international defender Marcos Rojo, who joined from Sporting Lisbon earlier in August.

As revealed by Goal, the deal for Di Maria, including bonuses, salary package and various other add-ons and bonuses, could surpass the €188m mark.

The 26-year-old, who fell down the pecking order at Madrid following the summer arrivals of Toni Kroos and James Rodriguez, could go straight into the United squad for the Premier League meeting with Burnley on Saturday.

Rodgers: Liverpool will bounce back from Manchester City loss

    439332_heroa.jpg

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is adamant that his side's 3-1 loss at Manchester City will not prove a major "psychological blow".

Despite controlling large periods of play in the first half at the Etihad Stadium on Monday, the Reds found themselves a goal down at the break as Stevan Jovetic opened his Premier League account for the season, with the Montenegrin and Sergio Aguero further punishing Rodgers's men after the break.

A Pablo Zabaleta own goal, forced by Rickie Lambert's close-range header that was initially brilliantly saved by Joe Hart, offered scant consolation for the visitors, but the Northern Irishman was keen to take the positives despite having lost to the side who pipped them to the title last season.

"I think, up until the 40th minute, we were the better team but we switched off in final period," he told Sky Sports.

"We didn't defend it well enough and were 1-0 down. At 2-0 it is difficult for us but, to our credit, we kept going.

"I felt we needed to be quicker in our actions in the final third, we needed to be more dynamic, but we looked a threat, which is important.

"This is a difficult place to come but we will continue to work, we'll get better - it just wasn't our night.

"There is no psychological blow; there is a long way to go. It was a tough game but we'll move on."

New signing Mario Balotelli, confirmed as a Red earlier on Monday, will soon be available after watching from the stands at the Etihad but Rodgers has fitness concerns over Glen Johnson and Alberto Moreno, both of whom picked up knocks late on.

"Glen pulled his thigh so we will assess that tomorrow," he added. "Moreno twisted his ankle so we need to see how that is. There is swelling now but we'll see how it is in the morning."

Pellegrini hails strong start after win over Liverpool

    445371_heroa.jpg

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini says that Monday's win over Liverpool was an important one after a disrupted pre-season.

The defending champions maintained their perfect start to the Premier League season with an emphatic 3-1 win at the Etihad Stadium, thanks to two goals from Stevan Jovetic and one from substitute Sergio Aguero.

Even at such an early stage of the 2014-15 campaign, Pellegrini understands the value of winning back-to-back games, having been forced to alter his pre-season preparations due to the World Cup.

"It is important to have six points in the first two games. It was a difficult start for us with some [players] with 15 days working," the Chilean boss told Sky Sports.

"It was important to win, especially to win against [a] strong team like Liverpool.

"I think the way we worked for the whole game, we played a very good team, a very offensive team. We worked without the ball for 95 minutes and, with the ball, [we] did enough to create three goals.

"We were not only patient but played with concentration and intensity. It is a pity they scored a goal but that was a mistake."

The match highlighted Jovetic's quality after the Montenegrin endured an injury-ravaged debut season at the club and Pellegrini was pleased to see the forward doing well.

"He was unlucky with injuries and it was difficult to play two or three games in a row [but] he was patient and has worked hard to come again," the manager enthused.

"I know he's a very good player. I am very happy for him because he deserves it."

    Wenger: Podolski going nowhere

    393354_heroa.jpg

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger insists Lukas Podolski will not be leaving the north London club this summer.

The German had been told he was free to leave the Emirates Stadium before the close of the transfer window, but injury to Olivier Giroud has prompted a re-think.

Juventus and Wolfsburg were among the clubs interested in signing Podolski.

"Podolski is in the squad tomorrow and will stay with us," said the Frenchman ahead of the second leg of his side's Champions League qualifier with Besiktas.

Giroud will be unavailable until November, with scans by a specialist on Tuesday confirming a broken bone in the France striker's foot.

The equaliser he scored as the Gunners came from behind to draw 2-2 against Everton is expected to be his last first-team action for 10 weeks.

Podolski's immediate position under Wenger has further been strengthened by doubts over Alexis Sanchez's fitness for Wednesday night's clash with the Turkish side at the Emirates Stadium.

Wenger also has Yaya Sanogo and Joel Campbell to turn to in attack in Giroud's absence but neither boast Podolski's experience in Europe's elite competition.

Pienaar ruled out of Everton's clash with Chelsea

    448936_heroa.jpg

Steven Pienaar has been ruled out of Everton's clash with Chelsea on Saturday, but Romelu Lukaku could be fit to face his former club.

Both players limped off in Saturday's 2-2 draw with Arsenal at Goodison Park, as Pienaar was replaced by Leon Osman after just 10 minutes with a groin complaint while Lukaku lasted 76 minutes before coming off with a toe problem.

Jose Mourinho's Chelsea visit Merseyside next weekend and Everton manager Roberto Martinez has confirmed that midfielder Pienaar will definitely sit the clash out, but the Spaniard was more hopeful on striker Lukaku - who joined from Chelsea in a club-record €35 million deal in the close-season.

"They have both been assessed," Martinez said on Tuesday. "Stevie [Pienaar] is going to miss the game at the weekend. He is the one that is going to take a little bit of time.

"Stevie is going to be out and he is going to join Arouna Kone and Bryan Oviedo who are the only other two players that are not available.

"Romelu, we will keep assessing him. He has reacted well in the 48 hours after the game.

"At the moment it is too early to know if he will be available at the weekend but I am quite positive with Rom."

One player who will compete for a place is midfielder Darron Gibson, who has not played a competitive match since damaging his cruciate knee ligament playing for the Republic of Ireland last October.

The 26-year-old was used sparingly during pre-season, but the ex-Manchester United man is in contention for Saturday.

"Darron Gibson is fully fit and I consider him part of the squad," Martinez continued. "He will be ready from now on to join the group and compete for a place."

:shocked:Giroud could be out for 10 weeks

    448083_heroa.jpg

Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud has been ruled out for up to 10 weeks with a broken bone in his foot, Goal has learned.

A specialist confirmed the France international will be out at least until November after he assessed detailed scans of the Frenchman's ankle on Tuesday.

It is a huge blow to Arsene Wenger, who is sweating over the fitness of Alexis Sanchez for the make-or-break Champions League qualifier against Besiktas.

Sanchez is carrying a knock sustained in the 2-2 draw at Everton on Saturday, although he is expected to pull through for the second-leg clash at the Emirates Stadium.

However, Giroud is preparing for a lengthy absence, which could force Wenger to make a late addition to his strike force in the final days of the transfer window.

An initial scan had failed to clear up the extent of the damage to an ankle injury suffered by Giroud during the closing stages of Arsenal's draw at Goodison Park.

He was sent for a second examination after the inflammation of the joint had subsided, which revealed a broken bone in his foot.

A specialist has confirmed the worst fears of Arsenal's medical team and Giroud is now set for a lengthy spell of rehabilitation.

He is regarded by the club as a quick healer but is expected to be out for up to 10 weeks.

"Olivier will not play against Besiktas and will see a specialist, then we'll make an announcement of how long he'll be out," Wenger confirmed at a press conference.

"It can be [a long-term injury]. We'll see tomorrow. It's sad for us."

Wenger now has only Sanchez, who led the forward line in the first half agajnst against Everton before going off injured, and unproven pair Yaya Sanogo and Joel Campbell in attack for the early months of the season.

He is likely to dip into the market for a new forward but his plans will depend upon whether Arsenal can overcome Besiktas on Wednesday night and progress into the lucrative Champions League group stages.

Arsenal's plans to recruit a new centre-back already suffered a blow on Tuesday after they lost out to Roma in the race to sign Greece international Kostas Manolas.

He was undergoing a medical at the Serie A club on Tuesday after they trumped the Gunners by offering €13m for the defender.

Real Madrid will always buy the world's best players - Butragueno

    51045_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid will continue to buy the best players in the world in order to remain at the pinnacle of European football, according to director of institutional relations Emilio Butragueno.

The Champions League holders brought in Toni Kroos from Bayern Munich and James Rodriguez from Monaco this summer, but are expected to lose Angel Di Maria to Manchester United after the Argentine requested a transfer following the arrival of the aforementioned duo.

Butragueno is not too concerned about Di Maria's imminent departure, though, and believes it's only logical players will leave Madrid as they continue to strengthen their squad.

"Real Madrid always aim to sign the best players in the world," Butragueno was quoted as saying by AS.

"That means some players will come in and others will go. You have to sign the best in order to fight for all titles.

"Di Maria is a great player. We are waiting for the outcome. If the deal materialises, it's because all parties involved reached an agreement."

The 26-year-old missed Madrid's 2-0 league win over Cordoba on Monday as he travelled to Manchester ahead of his proposed move to Louis van Gaal's side.

Balotelli arrival gives Liverpool a big lift - Henderson

    448928_heroa.jpg

Mario Balotelli's arrival at Liverpool will provide the team with a "big lift", according to midfielder Jordan Henderson.

The Merseyside club sensationally brought controversial ex-Manchester City striker Balotelli back to the Premier League from AC Milan in a €20 million deal on Monday.

Balotelli was not registered in time to feature against his former club at the Etihad Stadium later in the day, but watched from the stands as his new side were beaten 3-1 by City.

The 24-year-old met his Liverpool team-mates prior to the game, and could be in line to make his debut at Tottenham on Sunday.

And Henderson feels the Italy international will inject some extra impetus into a Liverpool attack shorn of last season's star man Luis Suarez.

"Everyone is looking forward to working with Mario," Henderson told the Liverpool Echo.

"He's a very talented striker and a big player. Hopefully he'll give us all a big lift and be able to play some part in the next game.

"He was in the dressing room before the game wishing everyone luck.

"Hopefully he can get a week's training under his belt and be involved against Tottenham."

Liverpool looked comfortable for much of the first half of Monday's match, before a defensive lapse from new signing Alberto Moreno allowed Stevan Jovetic to give City the lead shortly before the break.

But Henderson was pleased with the performance as a whole and believes the Reds can take plenty of positives from the fixture.

"I thought we dominated the first 40 minutes," he added.

"To be 1-0 down at half-time was tough to take... I felt as though we were in control of the game but then they scored a second and it was difficult.

"We will watch it all again and work on the things that need to be worked on in training.

"We've got the players here so it's just a case of working on things to improve."

Atletico will appeal Simeone ban, insists Cerezo

    448714_heroa.jpg

Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo has insisted that the Liga champions will file an appeal against Diego Simeone's eight-game ban.

The coach was hit with a heavy suspension following his conduct during the Supercopa de Espana clash with Real Madrid.

Simeone was sent from the dugout after arguing with the officials on the touchline, before patting the fourth official on the head and sarcastically applauding the referee before heading to the stands.

The Argentine's behaviour prompted the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) to dish out an eight-match ban, and Atletico believe it's only logical that they oppose the verdict.

"There is a committee that has issued a verdict and there is not much more to say on the suspension," Cerezo told Canal Plus.

"We will now have to wait and see how the appeal pans out. We will appeal the ban because that's common sense."

Meanwhile, Simeone himself has remained calm under the severity of his ban.

"My suspension? Very good... I am not going to make any judgement. I respect the people who have made this decision."
