Manchester United duo Lawrence and Powell join Leicester City

    405205_heroa.jpg

Leicester City have completed deals to bring Manchester United youngsters Tom Lawrence and Nick Powell to the King Power Stadium.

Lawrence has signed a four-year deal after a reported fee of £2 million was agreed while Powell moves on a season-long loan deal, though both deals are subject to Premier League clearance.

Twenty-year-old Lawrence only made his debut for the Red Devils in the win over Hull City in May, and despite being compared to Ryan Giggs during his time with the club's academy, will not be given the chance to prove his credentials at Old Trafford.

Powell, meanwhile, spent the 2013-14 campaign on loan at Wigan Athletic and will look to continue his development by playing Premier League football with the newly-promoted Foxes.

Should their deals be ratified, the pair could make their debuts for Nigel Pearson's side against Stoke City on September 13, though Powell will be inelgible to play against his parent club the following week.

The duo join fellow youngster Michael Keane in leaving the club on deadline day as the defender joined Burnley on loan until January.

Falcao handed No.9 shirt at Manchester United

    443701_heroa.jpg

Manchester United new-boy Radamel Falcao has been handed the No.9 shirt after signing for the Red Devils on loan from Monaco.

The Colombia international's move to Old Trafford was rubberstamped several hours after Monday's night's deadline, with United agreeing a season-long loan with the option to buy.

Falcao is set to lead the line after being handed the historic No.9 shirt, which has been vacated since Dimitar Berbatov - now at Monaco - departed the club in 2012.

Other players to wear the iconic jersey in the Premier League era are Louis Saha, Andrew Cole and Brian McClair.

Falcao has worn the No.9 throughout much of his career, including his time at the Stade Louis II, and is now likely to compete with existing forwards Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie for a spot in the first team.

The 28-year-old missed the World Cup in Brazil in due to a serious knee injury, with Teofilo Gutierrez wearing the No.9 shirt for Colombia and leading the line in his absence.

But Falcao has put his injury woes behind him to sign for United, telling the club's official website: "I am delighted to be joining Manchester United on loan this season.

"Manchester United is the biggest club in the world and is clearly determined to get back to the top.

"I am looking forward to working with Louis van Gaal and contributing to the team's success at this very exciting period in the club's history."

Muller: Football is a shark tank

    451607_heroa.jpg

Bayern Munich star Thomas Muller has stressed that football is a "shark tank" as one poor performance or an injury can cost you your career.

The Germany international has developed into a key player a the Bundesliga champions over the past few seasons, but he realises that it could all be over for him again if something goes wrong.

"The football world is much like a shark tank," Muller was quoted as saying by Playboy. "Only those who perform will survive.

"When you get injured or struggle to find your best form, the next player is ready to take your place."

Muller then went on to admit that it's not easy to stay motivated after all the success at club and international level in recent years due to quality of the teams that he plays for.

"There's a risk that we get a bit complacent. There are few games left with Bayern and Germany where you really get all fired up.

"Most of the time, a win is nothing more than what people were expecting. We will see how I deal with this as my career goes on.

"If I had had the choice, I would have preferred all this success at the end of my career rather than at the start of it so I could end my career on a high."

Di Maria: I stayed at Real Madrid for Ronaldo

    450030_heroa.jpg

New Manchester United signing Angel Di Maria has revealed that he stayed at Real Madrid last season because of his friendship with Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Argentina international was already heavily linked with a move away from Madrid in the summer of 2013, but he eventually stayed at the Santiago Bernabeu side because of the Portugal international's presence.

Di Maria did leave Madrid this transfer window, however, as he joined Manchester United in a deal worth €75 million after losing his starting berth to James Rodriguez.

"The truth is that I have a great relationship with Cristiano Ronaldo and I stayed at Madrid last season thanks to him," the Argentine told ESPN Radio.

"I left Madrid in the best possible way, by winning La Decima. In my farewell letter, I said exactly how I felt from the first day at the Bernabeu.

"I am grateful to Manchester United for meeting Madrid's demands. But I don't feel any extra pressure because I'm the most expensive player in the Premier League.

"The Premier League is more physical and about strength, whereas Spain was more about football. It's a very strong league, though. Van Gaal has told me to try to adapt as quickly as possible."

Di Maria made his official United debut in the scoreless draw with Burnley at the weekend.

Kerching! Kagawa return a commercial hit for Dortmund

    451070_heroa.jpg

Borussia Dortmund marketing chief Carsten Cramer believes the return of Shinji Kagawa will be a huge boost for the club's commercial activities.

The Japan international previously wore the Dortmund jersey between 2010 and 2012 before leaving the club for Manchester United.

He failed to make an impact at Old Trafford, though, and has now returned to the club where he rose to prominence in Europe, much to the delight of BVB's fans.

Over 5000 jerseys with Kagawa's name on it have been sold since Dortmund announced the signing of the attacking midfielder and the club have little doubt the 25-year-old's return will benefit the commercially.

"The transfer of Kagawa plays right into Dortmund's hands when it comes to merchandise," Cramer was quoted as saying by Bild.

"Kagawa is a huge boost for us in Japan and the rest of Asia. This gives us a push in the right direction.

Kagawa won two Bundesliga titles and the DFB-Pokal during his first spell at Dortmund.

Juventus perfect for young players, says Coman

    442455_heroa.jpg

French youngster Kingsley Coman believes that Juventus are the ideal club for youngsters to develop and is keen to follow in the footsteps of compatriot Paul Pogba.

The 18-year-old joined the Ligue 1 champions from Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer earlier this summer and he is optimistic about his chances of getting regular first-team action at Juve.

"When the Juventus directors presented their project to me, they told me about Pogba. He is an example of how young players are given the chance to shine here at Juventus," Coman told Le Parisien.

"It would have been much more difficult at Paris Saint-Germain.

"The people here at Juventus are only looking at my abilities. The moment I got here, they told me that I would get the chance to play if I was good enough.

"The opportunity is there and I would like to play between 15 and 20 games this season."

Coman made his official debut in Juventus' 1-0 Serie A win over Chievo at the weekend, featuring 68 minutes before he made way for Fernando Llorente.

Official: Everton sign Henen on loan

    451594_heroa.jpg

Everton have announced the signing of Belgian forward David Henen from Olympiakos on a season-long loan.

The Premier League club confirmed the deal on Tuesday morning and said the deal was done before the transfer window closed on Monday night.

The 18-year-old Henen moved from Anderlecht to Olympiakos on Monday before immediately signing a loan deal with the Goodison Park outfit.

Everton boss Roberto Martinez told the club's official website: "As we had said previously, he's someone whose potential we recognised and at this stage he will go into the Under-21 development squad.

"We [are] looking forward to working with him this season."

Henen is a Belgium youth international.

Monaco 'regret' Falcao's Man Utd move

    451574_heroa.jpg

Monaco vice-president Vadim Vasilyev has admitted that the Ligue 1 outfit would have preferred to hold on to Radamel Falcao, but they felt it would have been wrong to deny the Colombia international his transfer to Manchester United.

The prolific attacker joined Monaco from Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2013, but his impact was limited in his first season at the Stade Louis II side due to a serious knee injury sustained in January this year.

Irrespective of his recent fitness woes, Falcao was consistently linked with a move away from Monaco this summer and he eventually signed a one-year loan deal with United on Monday.

"I regret Falcao's departure, particularly for our fans," Vasilyev told reporters.

"However, we felt that from the moment the player had expressed his desire to join Manchester United, it would have been wrong to block his transfer."

The 28-year-old, who missed this summer's World Cup in Brazil due to his knee injury, netted 11 goals in 20 Ligue 1 appearances for Monaco in 2013-14.

Blind to wear No.17 for Manchester United

    451430_heroa.jpg

New Manchester United signing Daley Blind will wear the No.17 shirt at Old Trafford.

The former Ajax defender, signed for €17.5 million on transfer deadline day, inherits the jersey from Portuguese winger Nani, who has joined Sporting Lisbon on loan for the 2014-15 campaign.

Blind could make his United debut against QPR on September 14 after joining up with the Netherlands squad for their upcoming fixtures against Italy and the Czech Republic.

The versatile 24-year-old, who can play at left-back or in midfield, is the son of Ajax legend Danny Blind and was named his country's Footballer of the Year last season as the Amsterdam club claimed a 33rd championship.

    :cool:Schweinsteiger awarded Germany captaincy

    434971_heroa.jpg

Germany coach Joachim Low has named Bastian Schweinsteiger as his new captain in the wake of Philipp Lahm's international retirement.

Lahm opted to say farewell to the national team after skippering them to World Cup glory in Brazil this summer and Low feels Schweinsteiger is the ideal man to succeed his Bayern Munich team-mate.

"Bastian is a real leader and he has always taken his responsibility seriously with the national team, both on and off the pitch," Low said at a press conference.

"I have a lot of faith in him and so do the rest of the technical staff. He unites all of the players around him, irrespective of their age and which team they play for.

"Schweinsteiger is always there when we need him. He will be a great and worthy captain for the national team."

The 30-year-old midfielder has made over 100 appearances for Germany since making his official debut in 2004.

Schweinsteiger will miss the upcoming international friendly against Argentina due to injury, with Manuel Neuer wearing the captaincy armband instead in the rematch of the World Cup 2014 final.

:love:Ronaldo: Falcao a fantastic signing for Man Utd

    444334_heroa.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo feels Manchester United's loan signing of Radamel Falcao is a "fantastic" piece of business and will give the underperforming squad a boost.

The Colombian completed his season-long switch from Monaco on transfer deadline day after Louis van Gaal beat off interest from Manchester City and Arsenal.

United will pay a €12.5 million loan fee and a significant portion of his €380,000-a-week wages but Ronaldo feels Falcao - who was also linked with a move to Real Madrid - is a coup for his former club.

"He is a very good player, I think Manchester United have done well to sign him," Ronaldo told reporters. "We are talking about a top player here and a fantastic signing."

Falcao became United's sixth major summer signing after Luke Shaw, Ander Herrera, Marcos Rojo, Angel Di Maria and Daley Blind, but they are yet to record a competitive win under new boss Van Gaal.

A home loss to Swansea on the opening day of the Premier League season was followed by draws with Sunderland and Burnley and a 4-0 Capital One Cup humiliation at the hands of lower-league MK Dons.

And Ronaldo has backed Falcao is improve United's fortunes, with his arrival proving a boost for his new team-mates.

He continued: "Manchester United have not had a good start with only two points, so the squad needed someone of Falcao's quality."

Man Utd lead record Premier League summer spend of over €1 billion

    451467_heroa.jpg

Deadline day saw the Premier League reach a record €1 billion spend on transfers this summer.

The huge numbers were led by Manchester United, whose huge outlay of €200 million on seven players was the highest single-window spend yet by a British club.

It included a €75m deal to recruit winger Angel Di Maria from Real Madrid, the highest fee ever spent by any British team, and a late loan deal for Monaco's Radamel Falcao.

The Colombia international sealed a sensational switch to Old Trafford after a long summer of intense interest from the likes of Carlo Ancelotti's Champions League winners and Premier League holders Manchester City.

According to analysis from Deloitte’s Sports Business Group, summer spending is up by almost €250m on 2013's total of €796m, which was at the time €164m higher than ever before.

"This summer transfer window is one of records," said Dan Jones, a partner in the Sports Business Group.

"There are a number of factors contributing to this summer's spend, including the showcase for global talent a World Cup provides. However, one of the main drivers of Premier League spending continues to be the increased resources clubs now have as a result of improved broadcast deals.

"Last season the average Premier League club received around €31.6m more in central broadcast distributions than they did in 2012-13, which helped fuel a record transfer window last summer. We are again seeing Premier League clubs use these resources to contribute to what is a new record this summer."

Robinho: Brazil captaincy wouldn’t change a thing

    451160_heroa.jpg

Robinho says nothing will change his approach to securring a permanent return to the Brazil squad, regardless of whether or not he is named as captain this week.

The 30-year-old Santos striker was initially left out of the Gillette Brasil Global Tour matches with Colombia and Ecuador this coming week, but was drafted in at the last minute after Hulk was forced to withdraw through injury.

As one of the more senior members of the squad, and a favourite of coach Dunga during the latter’s time as Brazil coach between 2006 and 2010, Robinho is rumoured to be in line to inherit the captain’s armband in the absence of the injured Thiago Silva.

"If Dunga selects me to be the new captain, then I will be ready. Though other players like Neymar and David Luiz are also good choices for that role,” Robinho told reporters in Miami.

“For me, whether Dunga makes me captain or not, everything will remain same, my attitude won't change.”

“My relationship with Dunga is excellent, whether he is calling me up or not. What will determine my place in the Brazil team is what I do on the pitch, as with every player who is called. It’s only there that we can demonstrate that we should be here in the squad.”

Robinho was the second-most used player in Dunga’s initial spell as coach, during which he netted 21 goals in 53 games.

Brazil are ready to reclaim our identity – Filipe Luis

    379764_heroa.jpg

Filipe Luis insists Brazil must put their World Cup misery behind them and focus on returning the Selecao to its former glory.

The Chelsea left-back was drafted back into the squad by new coach Dunga for the Gillette Brasil Global Tour double-header with Colombia and Ecuador this month.

And the 29-year-old says the five-time world champions must now being work to rebuild their reputation following their World Cup semi-final defeat to Germany in July.

“The time has come for us to keep our feet firmly on the ground and accept that the World Cup was not a good time for us,” he told reporters in Miami ahead of Friday’s clash with Colombia.

“Speaking with all humility the world, Brazil is most powerful international team in the world. It has more world titles than anyone else… but we must be humble and admit that perhaps now some other teams are better.

“However if we all think the same way and find a solid group, we can return to the beautiful game that has always been Brazil’s trademark and that's when the shirt will once again begin to weigh down on our opponents.”

Filipe Luis' Chelsea team-mate echoed those sentiments, adding: “The respect that Brazil have throughout the world cannot be erased by one game. Even the players in Europe were saying it was an unusual game that was a surprise for everyone and won’t happen again.”

Brazil face Colombia at SunLife stadium on Friday and Dunga will continue his preparations for the game with a training session at FIU Soccer Stadium on Wednesday.

I heard nothing from Real Madrid - Negredo

    374731_heroa.jpg

Alvaro Negredo insists he knew nothing about interest from Real Madrid before signing for Valencia on deadline day.

The European champions were linked with a dramatic late swoop for their former player before Valencia ultimately beat the clock to secure a loan signing with a view to a permanent transfer.

"I heard nothing about Madrid. Valencia was the most favourable offer and the one I wanted," Negredo said to reporters at his unveiling.

"There was a lot of uncertainty and plenty of nerves throughout the day. But I have a very professional group of people beside me."

Negredo revealed it was an emotional day for his family when he told them he had clinched a move back to La Liga.

"One of them cried when I told them I had signed for Valencia. My father-in-law was a socio but he had to stop coming to the Mestalla because of work commitments," he revealed.

"I have not had to sacrifice anything, because I'm where I want to be. The president and Rufete made a strong commitment to me. I am just another player in the dressing room, and Rufete, Amadeo, Peter Lim and the fans have all been key pieces in pulling this deal off."

The 29-year-old says he felt stunned by his reception upon arrival at the Mestalla and is now determined to repay the fans by helping Valencia back to the top of Spanish football.

"You feel special when they welcome you this way, with this affection. It's a pleasure to be here and we will take Valencia to where the club deserves to be," Negredo added.

"We want to build the team, to get the club back on top. The rest has to be done on the pitch and we need to show this every weekend. I know what the city and the people here are all about, and they are one more reason why I wanted to come here.

"Competition will be very healthy and everything is going to be for the good of Valencia. Both Paco Alcacer and Rodrigo can contribute a lot in different positions."

Lacazette signs new Lyon deal as Gourcuff accepts pay cut

    439866_heroa.jpg

Olympique Lyonnais have extended the contract of Alexandre Lacazette by two years, according to chairman Jean-Michel Aulas.

The France international striker had been heavily linked with a move away from the Ligue 1 outfit during the transfer window, with Premier League side Newcastle United strongly tipped with his signature.

However, Lyon managed to keep hold of one of their most valuable assets with no deal being completed before Monday's deadline.

Aulas has now stated that Lacazette has signed a new deal, reportedly through to 2018, while also revealing that midfielder Yoann Gourcuff - who has struggled for form and fitness since joining in 2010 - has agreed to play this season on reduced terms.

"Yoann Gourcuff has agreed to reduce his salary for the season and we have extended the contract of Alexandre Lacazette by two years," Aulas said at a news conference.

Lacazette has started the new season well with three goals in four Ligue 1 matches.

However, the team have not replicated that form and have won once and lost three league games.

Spain can replace Alonso and Xavi, says Ramos

    423967_heroa.jpg

Sergio Ramos admits Xavi and Xabi Alonso were essential to Spain's modern success but insists they are replaceable.

The experienced midfielders amassed more than 240 senior caps between them and were vital components of the sides which won back-to-back European Champions and the World Cup in 2010.

Both players opted to retire from intenational football following the dismal campaign in Brazil this summer but Ramos is confident there are quality replacements waiting in the wings.

"Both Xavi and Xabi Alonso were important to the team, fundamental in the years of success, but we must not forget there is a new generation with great enthusiasm and quality," he is quoted as saying by AS.

Spain take on France in a friendly clash this week with something of a revamped squad after Vicente del Bosque left out the likes of Juan Mata, Gerard Pique and Fernando Torres, but Ramos believes the absence of a number of stars does not signal a significant change in the team's approach.

"I don't think there is a theme of change," he added.

"The national team has always had its identity and that shouldn't change, even if players have left the team.

"We are here to help the new players adapt in the best way but, in the end, we all set out to do things the right way."
