Rafael: I want to stay at Manchester United forever

    458533_heroa.jpg

Manchester United defender Rafael says that he wants to stay at Old Trafford "forever".

The Brazilian has been part of the Red Devils' first-team set-up since 2008 and made his first competitive start under Louis van Gaal in a 4-0 thrashing of QPR on September 14.

Rafael has seen fellow defenders Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra all depart the club in the off-season but the 24-year-old has his sights set on a long stay in Manchester.

"I am glad but sad because a lot of friends have left," the full-back told the club's official website. "I am glad I am still here.

"I want to keep going and stay here forever, if possible. It depends on me to play well, I need to play well. I just want to stay here.

"When I first came here, I saw how a lot of players helped me - [Ryan] Giggsy, [Paul] Scholesy and Gary Neville, even though he played in my position, he helped me a lot because he was one of the best right-backs in the world.

"I want to do the same when I see some young players come in. Sometimes it's difficult so my job is to try to help them.

"I have a good relationship with the fans because they are just so passionate. The fans here at Manchester United are simply so good at every game, even if we lose, they are still singing and just don’t stop singing and making noise!

"It makes you get emotional. I love these fans."

Wenger praises Welbeck as Arsenal cruise past Aston Villa

    458501_heroa.jpg

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger hailled the impact of Danny Welbeck as he scored his first goal for the club in their convincing 3-0 victory over Aston Villa on Saturday.

The 23-year-old assisted Mesut Ozil for the first goal with a through-ball and that favour was repaid moments later when the German crossed from the left wing to allow Welbeck to prod home for his first Arsenal goal.

An own goal from Aly Cissokho to round out a three-minute flurry ensured victory but the Gunners boss reserved praise for Welbeck as he helped secure victory - and a response which he felt was "needed" after defeat to Borussia Dortmund in midweek.

"It's the response we needed after Tuesday," Wenger told the media after the game. "Aston Villa started quite well and had one or two dangerous situations but, after that, we were in control.

"We scored three goals in three minutes and then, in the second half, it was a possession game because they didn't come out too much but, overall, it's a convincing win.

"We had Welbeck to score and that, of course, is important. He scored a similar goal to the one he scored in Switzerland [for England], a cross from the left and he pushed it in because the timing of the run is very good.

"I think he had a very good performance today because he kept the ball well, had good retention, which is important, and good overall game for a central striker."

Ahead of kick-off there was confusion over the selection of Alexis Sanchez, thought to have been named in the starting line-up only to be dropped to the bench in favour of Alex Oxlaide-Chamberlain.

However, Wenger insists that he had made the decision in order to rest the Chilean, admitting it is difficult to field players all of the time given the strength in depth available to him in that position.

"Sanchez was rested today. He was available," the Frenchman confirmed. "I have many offensive players and you work always find the right balance and it's not always easy.

"I gave Sanchez a rest as he has played many games. We have plenty of experienced players who are not playing at the moment but who are top quality. It's always a very sensitive point [to leave a player out].

"You never know really how people respond to that. His best position is in the middle but I have 10 other players in my squad who want to play in the middle."

Bayern never happy with a draw - Lahm

    456294_heroa.jpg

Bayern Munich captain Philipp Lahm says that his side never play for a draw after they came away from a clash with Hamburg with just a point to their name.

The Bavarians were expected to cruise past their rivals at the Imtech Arena but failed to break down the resolute hosts, who battled their way to a 0-0 stalemate.
Lahm is angry with how his team performed, particularly before the break, but is already looking forward to Tuesday's game against Paderborn.

"We cannot be happy with a draw," he told the club's official website."In the second half, we had the chances to win the game but we didn't do enough, especially in the first half. We're looking forward to Tuesday."

Coach Pep Guardiola, meanwhile, was quick to blame his side's slack showing on their midweek Champions League exploits against Manchester City."It wasn't easy to come into the game after the Champions League game against Man City," he explained.

"In the second half, it was a but better but unfortunately we did not take our chances. We need to continue to work now, it will be tough until December."

Thirteen goals in two games shows our reaction - Ancelotti

    458517_heroa.jpg

Carlo Ancelotti says 13 goals in two games shows his Real Madrid side have well and truly responded to their defeat to Atletico Madrid last week.

The Champions League winners were stunned by their city rivals at the Santiago Bernabeu last weekend but put five goals past Basel in Europe in midweek and followed that up with an devastating display on Saturday.

Cristiano Ronaldo struck a hat-trick, while Gareth Bale and Javier Hernandez also struck twice apiece, with James Rodriguez's stunning effort rounding off the list of goalscorers on a quite incredible afternoon at the Riazor.

"We have a phenomenon of great players who combined well today," Ancelotti purred after the game. "That's the beauty of the game."The way we think is that we fix the problems, not the points. The season is very long. Thirteen goals in two games shows that we have reacted well, but we must keep on improving."

The Italian was also full of praise for the depth of quality at his disposal, with Hernandez making his marking with two goals late on.

"We have given the team more intensity and fresh players helped us at the end. [Asier] Illarramendi gave balance, Chicharito, depth, and Isco quality."

Vidic 'adapting' to Serie A referees

    444780_heroa.jpg

Nemanja Vidic says he is still adapting to Serie A referees following his summer move to Inter.

The centre-back joined the Nerazzurri after leaving Manchester United on a free transfer at the end of last season, bringing to an end an eight-year stay at Old Trafford.

His arrival has coincided with a positive start to the season for Inter's fine, in which the club have taken four points from a possible six in Serie A as well as beating Dnipro in the Europa League on Thursday.Vidic says the club's target is to qualify for the Champions League this term but refused to rule out a push for the league title.

He said: "I still have to adapt. everything I need to know is not the same as the Premier League. I must also adapt to the referees, to the objectives, it is still early. I think match by match, the goal is the Champions League."

The defender has also had to get used to playing as part of a back three at San Siro and outlined the differences between his new club and what he was accustomed to at United.

"Tactically we played in Manchester with a 4-4-2 or 4-5-1, here it is different.
"I'm comfortable (in a three-man defence). I hope to show it against Palermo."

Van Gaal: Falcao & Van Persie can play together

    458328_heroa.jpg

Louis van Gaal insists that Radamel Falcao and Robin van Persie can play together at Manchester United.

Falcao joined the club in a deadline-day season-long loan deal, leading to speculation that Van Persie could be usurped by the Colombia international at Old Trafford.

However, Van Gaal believes the pair can complement each other, and foresees no problems with the potential partnership.

"I don't think that Falcao interferes with Van Persie or that he interferes with Falcao," he told reporters. "Falcao is a very good striker, I already said that when he came here in his first press conference.

"I like Van Persie as well - he is also a very good striker," the boss continued. "Then we have Wayne Rooney and Adnan Januzaj, and we also have James Wilson. We have five players for the two striker positions and I have to choose."

Januzaj hit a hat-trick for United’s Under-21 side against Sunderland in midweek and Van Gaal has been impressed with the Belgium international, though he insists he must knuckle down in order to earn a spot in the starting XI.

"He has to compete with very good players and that is the reason," he added. "You cannot put 15 players in the squad, only 11, and with this system he has to compete with a lot of very strong strikers.

"When we play 4-3-3, for example, then he should have maybe more chances. It is always dependable on the system that we play. When I have changed my system, he has played."

Van Gaal also revealed that Chris Smalling is set to return for United, while Luke Shaw made his United comeback against Sunderland.

Marseille deserved to beat Rennes - Bielsa

    458723_heroa.jpg

Marcelo Bielsa said Marseille were deserved 3-0 winners against Rennes in Ligue 1 on Saturday.Marseille scored all three of their goals in the second half at the Stade Velodrome as they stayed on top of the table after a scoreless first-half.

And Bielsa disagreed with Rennes coach Philippe Montanier's opinion that L'OM did little to justify the scoreline."Dominance in the game looked to us and the number of scoring opportunities was more or less equal," Bielsa told reporters.

"I disagree with the analysis of Montanier. We had more initiative, more of the ball, we finished our attacks better."The first period, we did not play well. In the second half we played better and we finished better attacks.

"I am happy because every time the team wins it gives me joy, but we have played only the first third of the season."The win was particularly pleasing for Romain Alessandrini, who swapped Rennes for Marseille during the close-season and opened his account for the season against his old employers.

"When I scored I wanted to explode, but I thought 'I'll calm down, it's my ex-teammates," said the 25-year-old, who spent two years with Rennes."It makes me feel good, it's fun scoring against Rennes."

Marseille are in the midst of a four-game winning streak after losing to Montpellier last month, scoring 11 goals and keeping three clean sheets in the process.

Ramsey 'the one that got away' from Manchester United

    454497_heroa.jpg

Manchester United "lost out" in their failure to sign Aaron Ramsey ahead of Arsenal according to the Wales assistant manager, Osian Roberts.

Ramsey, who initially signed from Cardiff in 2008, hit fine form last season for the Gunners and was rewarded with a new contract before winning the club's Player of the Season award.

And the 23-year-old, who has previously spoken of spurning Manchester United in favour of Arsenal, has now proved United missed out, according to the Wales assistant.

Speaking after the World Cup 2014 debrief, Roberts is quoted in the Mirror as saying: "[Sir Alex Ferguson] had a strong interest in how Aaron is doing because he was very close to signing him.

"He probably looks at it now as one that he lost out on and got away from him.

"It was really nice that he spoke about Aaron."

Ramsey was influential as Arsenal overcame Aston Villa 3-0 on Saturday to push his club into the top four, and they now turn their attentions to the north London derby against Tottenham next week.

Barca must not underestimate Levante - Luis Enrique

    457284_heroa.jpg

Barcelona coach Luis Enrique has warned his players not to to take Levante lightly when they face each other on Sunday.

The Catalan club come into the clash off the back of victories over Athletic Club and Apoel Nicosia, two games which kicked off a run of 7 games in just 21 days. And while Levante have often given the Blaugrana something to worry about in previous meetings, they sit bottom of the table, having picked up one point from their opening three games. And the Barca coach has stressed his players must not underestimate their opponents if they are continue their perfect start to the season so far.

“The idea is to beat Levante” he told a press conference. “And depending on how we do, we’ll see where we stand. I haven’t been worrying about having to play seven games in 21 days."There’s only one game that we can control at the moment, and that’s the next one. My message to the players is to always stay focused on the next game.

"I always make the same demands. To generate goalscoring chances, and not allow them to generate their own. To create pressure and to defend well."In football you always have to remember that two teams are playing. In this sport, other teams are always going to create problems for you.

"And all away games are that little bit more difficult, and we’re playing a side with a lot of strong points. I’m sure we’ll face difficulties, but all we have to do is concentrate on our own game, break through their defence, deal with their long balls and so on."

Zapata: Juventus were too much for Milan

    458756_heroa.jpg

AC Milan defender Cristian Zapata concedes that reigning champions Juventus were too much for his side on Saturday night.

Carlos Tevez grabbed the only goal of the game as the Old Lady saw off Filippo Inzaghi’s side at San Siro, ending Milan’s perfect start to the Serie A season which began with victories over Lazio and Parma.

But Zapata remains upbeat over the Rossoneri’s chances of improving on last season’s disappointment of an eighth place finish which saw them fail to qualify for European competition for the first time in 14 years.

"With their quality, Juve punished us. It was a very hard match and we wanted to achieve more. We wanted to be more courageous and in the end we weren’t able to do so," the Colombia internationaltold the club's website.

"We’re a bit down, but we’re at the start and on Tuesday we have an important match against Empoli."We want to get back on track. There is a whole season ahead and we have to look forward. We definitely didn’t achieve what we should have today.

Zapata’s central defensive partner Adil Rami echoed those sentiments, adding that he and Zapata had shown they are forging a fine partnership at the back.

"We’re at the beginning of the season and this result shows we have to work more. They’re a good side, with Tevez and Llorente for us it was hard. Physically it was very tough," Rami said.

"Zapata and I showed that we can hold our own, but we have lots of respect for Inzaghi and his choices. We will always ensure that we’re ready. We have all said that nothing is over, that we’re still at the start and that we have to continue to work and get back on track."
