Ibrahimovic not fit to face Lorient, confirms Blanc

    458421_heroa.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain boss Laurent Blanc has confirmed Zlatan Ibrahimovic is not fit enough to return against Lorient on Saturday.

It had been hoped that the Sweden star - who has been sidelined since late September with a heel problem - could be ready to make the matchday squad for the Ligue 1 clash this weekend.Blanc, however, does not feel the striker has fully recovered - though he says the signs in training are encouraging.

"He is much better, not enough to be in the group tomorrow, but there are some positive signs," the coach told reporters."He wants to be back. All injured players have a fear of when they will return - that is normal.

"This was longer than expected. I'm waiting to see if the good signs are confirmed. He must be careful in his training, even if he has above-average physical characteristics."

Blanc has backed Ezequiel Lavezzi to become a key player in Ibrahimovic's continued absence, particularly after his performance against Bordeaux."This is a week of three matches, all important. We will think about how to manage these three matches," he continued.

"Lavezzi can score goals. I was very satisfied to see him score against Bordeaux. He had physical problems. His return from the World Cup was complicated. He starts his season now."The return of injured players enables us to get better and we are on the right path. A post-World Cup year is always difficult for players and clubs. This is the case for all teams. I talked about that with [Bayern Munich boss] Pep Guardiola.

"Last year we did great things. Few teams in Europe were able to do that. This year, it's harder. We must prepare this game against Lorient seriously. We must have the same preparation as against Olympique de Marseille."

Rabiot signs four-year contract to complete PSG U-turn

    453564_heroa.jpg

Adrien Rabiot has completed a U-turn over his future by signing a new long-term deal with Paris Saint-Germain.

The highly rated teenager, whose previous contract was set to expire at the end of the season, had been heavily linked with a move to Roma in January after the Serie A club's sporting director Walter Sabatini made their interest public last month.
However, Rabiot put pen to paper on a four-year extension to his deal with PSG on Friday, keeping him at the Parc des Princes until 2019.

And the French midfielder, a product of the Ligue 1 champions' youth system, is delighted to be staying put."I am very happy to remain a player of Paris Saint-Germain, the club that made me the player I am today," the 19-year-old told PSG's official website.

"I would like to thank the president [Nasser Al Khelaifi], who kept discussions open in recent months.

"It was here at Paris Saint-Germain that I grew up and enjoyed my first experiences as a player. The club's project is ambitious, and I'm very proud to be a part of it for the coming years."Now I want to concentrate on my football, on my game and give my best for Paris Saint-Germain on the pitch and for the supporters."

Al-Khelaifi added: "Adrien grew up here with us and I'm covinced we will live some great footballing experiences in the future."It was very important for the club that a young French player, with the talent that Adrien possesses, remained a part of the PSG family."

Rabiot, who made 25 Ligue 1 appearances last term, has been restricted to reserve-team football so far this season, due to a combination of injury and the uncertainty surrounding his future.

However, the France Under-21 international will hope to force his way back into Laurent Blanc's first-team plans now he has committed to PSG.

    Ferdinand baffled by 'ludricous' suspension

    463175_heroa.jpg

QPR defender Rio Ferdinand has said he is "baffled" by the three-match suspension he has received for posting an offensive Twitter message.

Ferdinand was banned for three games on Wednesday, fined £25,000 (€32,000) and ordered to attend an education programme arranged by the Football Association after a misconduct charge against him was found proven.

The former England captain was found to have posted a message on his Twitter account that was "abusive and/or indecent and/or insulting and/or improper".

In addition, the breach of FA regulations was considered aggravated as the comment included a reference to gender.

QPR have yet to announce whether they will appeal the sanctions against Ferdinand, who is set to miss Premier League contests against Chelsea, Manchester City and Newcastle United.

Ferdinand is clearly unhappy with his ban, however, and outlined his surprise on Friday.

In a fresh tweet, the 35-year-old wrote: "Is humour even allowed....I'm baffled! Ludicrous.... & I don't mean the rapper."

Joey Barton, a team-mate of Ferdinand at QPR, also criticised the severity of the punishment handed out.

"Surely a person has the right to be offensive? Especially if someone offends you? Shambolic that @rioferdy5 misses 3 games and loses £25k," tweeted Barton.

Ancelotti: Bale still deserves to play for Real Madrid

    508091_heroa.jpg

Carlo Ancelotti insists that Gareth Bale remains one of Real Madrid's most important players.

The 25-year-old has endured a difficult start to his second season in Spain, following last summer's world-record €100 million transfer from Tottenham Hotspur.

Bale's form was the subject of much debate even before he was sidelined with a back problem midway through the month but some pundits are now claiming that the winger should not be restored to the starting line-up when he does return from injury - not least because of the impressive form of Isco in the Welshman's absence. However, Ancelotti intimated that Bale will be restored to the Madrid attack as soon as he is fully fit.

“Bale deserves to play," the Italian told reporters on Friday. "He is one of the best players in the world and a very important player for this team.“Isco is playing well and we hope he can prolong the good moment he’s in until the end of the season."But he is also compatible with Bale. He’s proved that already: they’ve played together and played well."

Ancelotti also had his say on the current controversy over the fact that three Madrid players (Cristiano Ronaldo, Luka Modric and Sergio Ramos) picked up individual prizes at the LFP awards dinner during the week, while not a single member of Atletico's title-winning side was recognised.“I’m never surprised when any Madrid player wins an award," the former Chelsea boss stated.

"It doesn’t come as a surprise when Ramos or Modric receive an award – or Cristiano, because he is the best player in the world."Madrid return to Liga action on Saturday at Granada, having drawn to within a point of leaders Barcelona with a 3-1 win in last weekend's Clasico.

Ancelotti confirmed that Bale, Jese Rodriguez and Fabio Coentrao will all miss the trip to Andalusia through injury.

Van Gaal: Manchester derby is the biggest

    488291_heroa.jpg

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal says the Manchester derby will be the biggest he has managed in.

The Dutchman takes his side to the Etihad Stadium on Sunday to face the Premier League champions fresh from a dramatic 1-1 draw at Old Trafford with Chelsea.

And although the former Barcelona, Ajax and Bayern Munich boss recognises that the meeting with City is just one game in a long season, he says the anticipation he has sensed within the squad showed him the importance of the cross-town clash.

Van Gaal told reporters: "This is the biggest derby that I shall manage.

"It is one of 38 [league] matches we have to play, but for the fans it is unbelievably big as a rivalry and I have felt that also with a lot of the players in the squad, but also especially with Ryan Giggs.

"When he presented the analysis on City, I felt more tension with him. It was good to see."

United trail their cross-city neighbours by four points but have been boosted by the news that David Silva will face up to four weeks on the sidelines.

However, Van Gaal also revealed that Radamel Falcao will miss the derby, which kicks off at 14.30CET on Sunday.

Mourinho: Costa fit for Chelsea's clash with QPR

    469022_heroa.jpg

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho says Diego Costa is available to face QPR on Saturday after recovering from injury.

The Spain international has missed four matches with a hamstring problem, which created tension between Mourinho and Roja coach Vicente del Bosque.

Now that Costa is to return to action against QPR at Stamford Bridge, Mourinho has stated that while he has no problem with players representing their countries, he feels that his star striker's fitness has to be carefully managed.

The Portuguese told reporters on Friday, "He played for the national team and we lost him for four matches: Crystal Palace, Maribor, Shrewsbury and Manchester United - four matches in three different competitions.

"Now he is again available but he needs to be under special care.

"I'm always supportive of players playing for their countries when they are in the condition to do so. But I'm nobody to stand in the way of the national team; I can't stop him going away with his country.

"It is good for us. It's difficult when you only have one striker available, but when you have two the situation improves."

Despite Costa's comeback, Mourinho is expecting a difficult game against a QPR side buoyed by a much-needed win over Aston Villa on Monday night that lifted Harry Redknapp's men off the foot of the Premier League table.

"I think I know what to expect from QPR, and I can say it will be a difficult game for us," the two-time Champions League winner added.

"It's the first time I play against QPR. London is a special place because of the number of derbies, which makes it unique."

Mourinho also praised striker Didier Drogba for his recent displays, with the Ivorian having netted three goals in his last three games, against Maribor, Manchester United and Shrewsbury Town.

"Me, the owner, the board, him - we all decided together for him to come back - we believed in him and he believed in himself and that he could still be important," he said.

"He has been fantastic for us in the last week when we were in real trouble, without Diego [Costa] and without Remy.

"He had to do what no one should do - play 90 minutes of football with 48 hours difference and he managed to do that in a fabulous way."

Pellegrini confirms David Silva out for up to four weeks

    527931_heroa.jpg

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini says David Silva is out for three weeks with a knee ligament injury picked up against Newcastle in the League Cup.

The Spain international underwent a scan on Thursday after limping off after just nine minutes of the 2-0 defeat to Alan Pardew's side at the Etihad Stadium.

Silva will now miss some crucial games including Sunday's derby against Manchester United as well as the midweek Champions League clash against CSKA Moscow.

"David has a problem in his ligament," the City boss told reporters. "Maybe he will be out around three or four weeks so he will not be available for the derby.

"David is a very important player but we have a squad and we will have to replace him with another player."

However, there was better news for the reigning champions with Yaya Toure expected to be fit to face Manchester United despite being substituted against Newcastle after picking up a groin problem.

The Ivory Coast midfielder is still recovering from the knock, but Pellegrini believes "he will have no problems to play."

City have an excellent record against their local rivals having won the last three Premier League meetings but Pellegrini is expecting a difficult encounter on Sunday.

"On Sunday it will be City v United and last year was the same. It was not me v Moyes and this time it's not me v Van Gaal," he told reporters.

"For supporters it's a special game and we know that. We know what it means to win against Manchester United."

Manchester City have shown Pellegrini's methods work - Hart

    459466_heroa.jpg

Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart says that manager Manuel Pellegrini does not need to "smash up the room" to turn around the club's poor run and insists the team have already proved that his methods work with the club.

The soft-spoken Chilean has led his side to a draw and two defeats in their last three games but his No.1 shot stopper insists that his frustration at their performances has not been hidden by his quiet demeanour.

"He's not an actor," Hart told Sky Sports News. "That's who he is. It's how he portrays himself in the media but he doesn't change when he speaks to us.

"It's a good thing to have a constant - we know what kind of a guy he is and what he expects from us. Someone doesn't have to smash the room up to show you they're disappointed.

"He's got his standards that we try to live up to and, if we don't, we're just as disappointed as he is. He knows his methods and we've proved in the past playing his way works.

"We know where we are as a unit," Hart added of City's slump in results. "We just need a few players, myself included, to step up and we'll be fine.

"Last season we had fewer points at this time and we won the league.

"We are big enough and ugly enough to know that this is football. We are prepared to fight through it and put it right."

Cavani: Ibrahimovic should win Ballon d'Or

    457363_heroa.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain forward Edinson Cavani has rubbished suggestions there is friction between himself and Zlatan Ibrahimovic and backed the Sweden star to land the 2014 Ballon d’Or.

There has been speculation the pair have a distant relationship at the Parc des Princes with Cavani frustrated he has to play in a wide position to accommodate Ibrahimovic in the centre-forward role. But the Uruguay international Cavani insists they “get along well” and is baffled as to why the subject is raised so regularly.

He told Le Parisien: “We're compatible. He can draw defenders towards him and create space. He makes his team-mates better. It's kind of the same thing with Luis Suarez in the national team. But the tactics are different."We have a normal relationship [that exists] between colleagues. We play for the same team and we get along well.

"But I don't understand why there are so many questions about my relationship with Zlatan. I have the same relationship with all my team-mates. For me, all my team-mates are the same."We give our best for the team. Once again, I don't understand why this question on Ibra is asked so often. There isn't any problem."

    E269F160561888EFB3DA89897EA0A043.jpg

Cavani has backed former Barcelona and AC Milan star Ibrahimovic’s claims to land the Ballon d’Or in Zurich on January 12.

"There are a lot of serious rivals but he deserves to get this prize," Cavani said."He's proved that he is an amazing player and these last few years he has accomplished fantastic things.”

Cavani, 27, has long been linked with a move to the Premier League but says he is currently focusing on life in the French capital. He said: "I don't think I said anything that would lead [people] to think that, and neither did the [PSG] president [Nasser] Al-Khelaifi.

"All of these things are just rumours that happen in football, as they did when I joined Napoli and PSG. Every time, a lot of things are said."I don't know what will happen. Nobody does. But I have a contract and the most important thing is that I'm here today and that we win titles."

Cavani also discussed the possibility of his club winning the Champions League this season."I think we can, and we could have last season," he continued. "We just missed a bit of luck, even though I don't like this word.

"But this year, we're more experienced, we're better prepared and these are two necessary conditions to win the Champions League."

    Cantona: Bielsa is like Mourinho

    408053_heroa.jpg

Eric Cantona says Chelsea coach Jose Mourinho and current Marseille boss Marcelo Bielsa are very similar in their style and character.

Both men are currently enjoying successful periods at their clubs, with Mourinho's Chelsea unbeaten at the top of the Premier League, while Marseille currently sit at the summit of Ligue 1 with a four-point lead over champions Paris Saint-Germain.
And the former Manchester United star believes the two are great and charismatic coaches."I do not support Marseille much, but I like Bielsa," Cantona told France 2. "I think he has... character. He has a personality, charisma. He knows good football.

"He's a bit like Mourinho. I like all those guys. When there is a press conference with Bielsa or Mourinho, we know that something will happen."I like to hear them speak. I like that they call into question the opinions and questions of journalists."

He added: "They back their players, even if they are in the wrong. There is always something going on in their press conferences and it does not prevent them from winning and having great teams."

Van Gaal: Falcao out, but Rooney plays v Manchester City

    465008_heroa.jpg

Louis van Gaal has revealed that Radamel Falcao will miss Sunday's Manchester derby through injury, though Wayne Rooney returns to the fold.

Rooney has sat out the Red Devils' last three matches after being sent-off against West Ham in September, and though he suffered a foot injury earlier in the week, will be fit to make his return to the starting XI.

But Falcao, who Goal revealed is set to join the Old Trafford outfit permanently for £44 million in the summer following his current one-year loan deal from Monaco, remains on the sidelines after picking up a knock in training.

Van Gaal told reporters: "Falcao is still injured. Rooney was never injured. He shall play, he is my captain. I think [Antonio] Valencia is fit again to play.

"He [Rooney] has scored a lot of goals against City, the most of any player. I am very happy that he can play, and he shall.

Along with Rooney, midfielder Marouane Fellaini is set to remain in the United team at the Etihad Stadium following some recent good performances.

The former Everton man scored after coming off the bench against West Brom before putting in another impressive showing against Chelsea as Van Gaal's side came from behind to claim a 1-1 draw.

And the ex-Bayern Munich boss revealed he has been pleased with the Belgium international's showings and is hopeful of him maintaining his current form.

"He has made a great contribution and also the assist for the [Chelsea] goal.

"He has had a lot of time out injured but when he is fit I have played him. He has to continue with that because then I am very pleased."

Breaking records is in Ronaldo's DNA - Santos

    475311_heroa.jpg

Portugal coach Fernando Santos says breaking records is in Cristiano Ronaldo's DNA.The Real Madrid forward has been in free-scoring form so far this season, notching 16 goals in eight league appearances.

And the star recently broke his own record at the club by scoring in 11 consecutive games.Santos, meanwhile, was effusive in his praise of the 29-year-old, telling Portuguese radio station Renascenca that he is a "born winner" and that his desire to "win and break records" is "part of his DNA".

The former Greece trainer added that he hopes the attacker can "break another record by capturing a trophy with the national team".He added: "And if it could be at the upcoming European Championships [in France in 2016], that'd be terrific.

"Of course I want to win the Euros and so do the players. We will fight to do so. I believe it can happen. If other countries can do it, why can't we?"
