:baffled:Van Gaal: West Brom parked the bus!

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal claimed West Brom "parked the bus" after his side lost 1-0 to the Baggies at Old Trafford.

A deflected strike from Chris Brunt was enough for Tony Pulis' side to claim victory although Robin van Persie missed a gilt-edged chance to equalise but his spot-kick was saved by Boaz Myhill.

The result leaves the Red Devils in fourth place, four points ahead of Liverpool with United to play Crystal Palace, Arsenal and Hull in their final three games.

"We knew that they would park the bus. We have to deal with that. I think in the first half, we didn't create enough chances but we had chances to score," he told Sky Sports.

"In the second half we had enough chances to score. You have to finish. It's now the third match in a row. We have to take care of that.

"It's very difficult. You are attacking all the match and you are not scoring - it's very disappointing."

Myhill also made two superb late stops from Van Persie and substitute Angel Di Maria to preserve a clean sheet, but Van Gaal insisted his team must be more clinical in front of goal having failed to score for the third game in a row.

"Also the defending of West Brom and a fantastic goalkeeper today [stopped Manchester United scoring]," he added.

"The finishing was not good enough. You can say a lot of things but I've seen a team that fights till the end. That attacks for 90 minutes. And one free-kick is enough to beat us.

"You know in advance that teams are doing that [parking the bus]. It's not the first time. We were a little bit unlucky.

"But that's not enough. You have to score out of your possibilities and the chances today were great enough for me.

"Only by communicating [can Manchester United recover]. They [the players] are now very disappointed but the manager is also disappointed.

"We have to evaluate what we are doing good, what we are doing bad, what we can improve and how the opponents shall play next week. We can play football that we showed also this match but we were unlucky."

Chelsea 1-0 Crystal Palace: Hazard nets the winner as Blues wrap up the Premier League title

    chelsea-celebrate-vs-crystal-palace_suic17p92oy71kpsers3eu2as.jpg

Chelsea were crowned Premier League champions for the fourth time after securing an edgy 1-0 win over Crystal Palace on Sunday.

After coming from behind to beat Leicester City 3-1 in midweek, Jose Mourinho's side knew that three points at Stamford Bridge would secure a first title since 2010.

Palace manager Alan Pardew - who masterminded one of Chelsea's two top-flight defeats this term while in charge of Newcastle United - urged his team to make Mourinho and co wait to pop the champagne corks.

And the visitors put in a spirited display throughout, but were undermined when James McArthur felled Eden Hazard in the penalty area on the stroke of half-time.

Hazard saw the resulting spot-kick saved by Julian Speroni before nodding home the rebound, and it was fitting that the PFA Player of the Year - so instrumental in Chelsea's success this season - should get the goal that earned Mourinho his third Premier League crown.Chelsea were not at their best in a nervy second half but, like they have all season, got the job done to seal the title with three matches to spare.

And the Stamford Bridge faithful chanted Mourinho's name as they celebrated a second trophy this term following their League Cup success in March. Mourinho had a simple 10-word message in his programme notes: "Three more points to be champions. Let's do it together."

Chelsea had to show that united front to guard against an enterprising opening from Palace as the hosts struggled to muster much in front of goal.

Juan Cuadrado - drafted in as a late replacement for Ramires who pulled out in the warm-up - flashed a 30-yard strike over the crossbar, before Palace had tentative claims for a penalty turned down when Jason Puncheon's deflected shot struck the arm of John Terry.

A spot-kick was awarded at the other end shortly before the break, though, when Hazard was tripped by McArthur after a darting run into the box.

The Belgium star saw his weak penalty saved by Speroni, but he headed in the rebound to ease the tension around Stamford Bridge.Keen to protect their lead, Chelsea lowered the tempo after the break - Branislav Ivanovic and John Obi Mikel both missing with long-rang efforts.

Palace did little to threaten an equaliser, although Puncheon's fizzing 30-yard shot drifted just wide and their willingness to play on the front foot made sure Chelsea could not relax.

Thibaut Courtois, a spectator in the Chelsea goal for most of the game, proved his worth to deny Wilfried Zaha from close range, while Willian skipped past two challenges and shot narrowly wide at the other end.

But it mattered little, as Mourinho and his players celebrated jubilantly at full-time.

Roma 2-0 Genoa: Doumbia and Florenzi make the difference for hosts

    1327762_heroa.jpg

Seydou Doumbia and Alessandro Florenzi fired Roma to victory over Genoa as Rudi Garcia's men won 2-0 at the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday.

The striker's first-half goal was followed up by a late effort from Florenzi and it was enough to secure a second consecutive win for the capital club to boost their chances of finishing second in Serie A.

Juventus wrapped up the league title on Saturday but there is still plenty to play for with Roma, Lazio and Napoli all in contention for a top-three finish.

However, it was anything but a simple win for the Giallorossi, as Genoa put them under a lot of pressure during the closing stages in what was a competitive encounter.

M'Baye Niang had the first opportunity of the game when he was found in a great position inside the box but a heavy touch saw the chance pass him by. Moments later, a good through-ball presented him with another opportunity but he lost out to Morgan de Sanctis.

Next it was Roma's chance, with Daniele De Rossi unleashing a ferocious shot from distance which flew narrowly wide.

Genoa kept up the pressure, though, with Vasilis Torosidis being forced into a good headed clearance from the back post after a dangerous cross had them under a lot of pressure.

A great run forward and a cut-back from the flank from Gervinho carved out a great opportunity for Roma, with the ball ending up at Radja Nainggolan, whose deflected shot was well saved.

The deadlock was broken shortly afterwards, though, when Doumbia latched onto a defensive error and cut past two defenders before firing home under Mattia Perin.

A good passing move from Genoa 10 minutes into the second half saw Iago Falque through on goal but the winger's effort was blocked by De Sanctis as the visiting side piled on the pressure.

Roma felt they should have had a penalty 65 minutes in when Torosidis was tripped in the box, but the referee refused to entertain the home side's claims and booked the Greece full-back for simulation.

Genoa came close to equalising with five minutes left when Juraj Kucka beat De Sanctis to a high ball and diverted it towards goal but it was cleared before it could cross the line.

However, the home side were able to put the game to bed in injury time when Florenzi took possession in his own half and burst forward before smashing high past Perin to secure the points.

Tottenham 0-1 Manchester City: Sublime Aguero strike sees off Spurs

    sergioaguerocropped_hes8lzor7qjv1qazoywxvv5d7.jpg

Kun Aguero was the scourge of Tottenham Hotspur once again as Manchester City won 1-0 at White Hart Lane on the day they were dethroned as Premier League champions by Chelsea.

City went into Sunday's game knowing their slim hopes of retaining the title were over after Jose Mourinho's side beat Crystal Palace earlier in the day, but they advanced their hopes of claiming second spot.

Aguero scored all four goals in City's 4-1 home win over Tottenham in October and his first-half strike ensured he has now found the back of the net eight times in his last four games against the London club.

The Premier League's leading scorer this season now has 22 goals in the top flight and 28 in all competitions, but will not be celebrating another title as Chelsea are 13 points clear with three games remaining.

Tottenham had their chances, but were thwarted by an inspired Joe Hart as they failed to build on a bright start and their hopes of securing a UEFA Champions League spot are now practically over, while City are three points clear of Arsenal - who play Hull City on Monday.

Danny Rose recovered from a hamstring injury to replace Ben Davies, who dislocated his shoulder in Tottenham's draw at Southampton last weekend.

Hart captained City in the absence of injured duo Vincent Kompany and Yaya Toure, while James Milner and Fernandinho returned to the starting line-up.
Tottenham had been on the end of heavy losses in their last three games against City, but looked capable of dishing out a thrashing of their own as they made a positive start.

An unmarked Eric Dier spurned a great chance within two minutes when he headed a corner from the left wide, then Harry Kane sprung the offside trap but fired just wide of the far post.

Hugo Lloris had a huge stroke of luck when he slipped after coming out of his penalty area attempting to deal with a long ball, but Aguero was unable to take advantage as he also went down with the ball running away from him and, despite claims he had been upended by Federico Fazio, there was no contact from the defender.

Aguero was not to be denied an opening goal 29 minutes in, though, as Tottenham were made to pay for some slack defending.

David Silva was the architect, showing great vision to pick out the Argentina striker inside the penalty area with an incisive pass and City's leading scorer fired high into the net at the near post.

Fernandinho's goal-bound shot was blocked by Rose before firing wide when Silva set him up, but City were indebted to a great Hart save to deny Ryan Mason from close range two minutes before the break.Hart again came to City's rescue on the hour mark when he stood up to thwart Kane, who evaded Martin Demichelis to race clear but was unable to apply the finish.

Aguero really ought to have doubled the visitors' lead almost immediately, rounding Lloris with his first touch but firing into the side-netting with his second when off balance with the goal gaping.

Samir Nasri lasted only three minutes after replacing Frank Lampard before limping off with an injury, while Hart produced two fine saves late on to keep out Erik Lamela as City sealed a third win a row.

Mancini bemoans lack of precision from Inter

    xherdan-shaqiri-inter-chievo_qdkfkywn53by1spxbegh68frl.jpg

Roberto Mancini rued a lack of creativity as Inter were held to a goalless draw by a resilient defensive display from Chievo in Serie A.

Despite dominating the opening half at San Siro and creating a host of chances, Inter failed to a way through, with Mauro Icardi denied by the post.

Chances continued to come in the second half, but Inter - who missed the chance to go sixth - needed a bit of luck to hold on for a point as Chievo made a late charge, with Samir Handanovic twice denying Alberto Paloschi.

"Unfortunately against a side that defends with everyone behind the ball, if you don't find a breakthrough, it becomes more difficult," Inter head coach Mancini told Sky Sport Italia .

"We are disappointed not to have won, but not for everything else. We were imprecise, as we found the frame of the goal only four times, but had 24 shots on goal."Chievo closed up until the end, then ran into the spaces and the only thing we did wrong was not score a goal.

"In these games you need talented players to break the deadlock. We've got some of those players and gave it our best."We are disappointed, as we could've caught sixth place today. It remains open."

Drogba refuses to discuss Chelsea future after title win

    didierdrogba-cropped_2o1k5e4vom8t1n0ic9t78zjxg.jpg

Didier Drogba offered no assurances over his future after Chelsea clinched the Premier League title with a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace.

A 45th-minute goal from Eden Hazard on Sunday was enough to seal a victory that saw the Blues claim the Premier League for a fourth time, for which the striker has been involved each time.

The 37-year-old has had to be content with a limited role this term, in stark contrast to Chelsea's previous title-winning campaign, in 2009-10, when the Ivorian scored 37 goals in all competitions.

"This one is sweet. I am happy to be part of this, but Chelsea will always be bigger than me," he told Sky Sports. "What now? A good rest, a good celebration and I will see."

United still control top-four destiny - Young

    ashleyyoung-cropped_1npqkf0ahjg35117xndwu2fu9e.jpg

Manchester United winger Ashley Young is upbeat over his side's top-four chances, despite falling to a third straight defeat against West Bromwich Albion on Saturday.

After dictating play for long periods at Old Trafford, United ended up on the losing side after Chris Brunt's free kick struck Jonas Olsson and flew past David de Gea. It is the first time since 2001 that United have lost three Premier League games in a row, and with Liverpool winning later in the day, their advantage in the final qualifying spot for the Champions League has narrowed to only four points.

But Young told MUTV: "There's no doubt we can qualify for the Champions League and that was always what we wanted to do.

"It's still in our hands and we have three massive games coming up. We have another tough game away to Palace next weekend and we want to get back to winning ways.

"We have the team spirit and character to bounce back from this defeat. We'll work again this week, prepare on the training pitch and hopefully things will go right next weekend."

Terry takes swipe at Benitez after title triumph

    1295922_heroa.jpg

Chelsea captain John Terry has hit out at former Blues manager Rafa Benitez in the wake of the club's Premier League title win.

Eden Hazard's goal gave Jose Mourinho's side a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace on Sunday and secured the title with three games remaining.

Terry has been an ever-present in the Premier League this campaign, and has featured in 45 games for the Blues in all competitions. It is a stark contrast to his year under Benitez, in which he played only 28 games for Chelsea.

Referencing a comment the Spaniard made during his time at Stamford Bridge in 2013, Terry said: "We worked so hard to get here. to get over the line was a tough match but bottom line is we’re champions.

"One person said I couldn't play twice in a week and knows who he is. Not only have I proved everyone wrong I’m still fighting, still feeling great - more importantly I’ve got great players and great management around me.

"This is what I live for, I was a ballboy, mascot, I’ve played in the stadium, I’ve done everything. To be here and give the fans something...

"The first one was very special obviously but when you wait five years without winning it and you see teams [win it] and you’ve grafted it really hurts, so we’re going to enjoy today."

Anfield finale will be emotional - Gerrard

    1323622_heroa.jpg

Steven Gerrard says he is looking forward to his final match at Anfield, though he admits saying goodbye to the Liverpool fans will be emotional.

Gerrard missed a penalty before heading in an 87th-minute winner to send Liverpool past QPR 2-1 on Saturday and keep the club's faint top-four hopes alive.

It was the 34-year-old's penultimate match at Anfield as he prepares for his summer move to LA Galaxy and he admits bidding farewell against Crystal Palace later this month will be difficult.

"Yeah of course," Gerrard told Sky Sports when asked if he was pleased to get a reception when substituted against QPR in the 89th minute.

"These supporters have been behind me all the way. They've helped me make the player I am today. I thanked them for that support.

"I'm really looking forward to my last appearance here in a couple of weeks. It's going to be emotional for myself and my family, but I'm really looking forward to it.

"It was nice, I'll take any goal because I've only got one appearance left at Anfield. More importantly it meant the team got three points and everyone goes home happy."

Gerrard is adamant that Liverpool remain hopeful of a slip-up from one of Arsenal, Manchester City or Manchester United in the final weeks of the top-four race.

"We've got to worry about ourselves. We need to try and finish strong," the 34-year-old added. "I'm sure the manager's already got one eye on next season, but these games are still important.

"You represent Liverpool Football Club, so you want to win them all and we want to keep pressure on the teams above because if they do slip up in a couple of games, we've got to be ready to pounce."
