Borussia Dortmund 2-0 Hertha Berlin: Subotic and Durm give hosts vital win

    henrikh-mkhitaryan-borussia-dortmund-genki-haraguchi-hertha-berlin-german-bundesliga-09052015_btxbsdlbajyk1pzmuon6bvv66.jpg

Erik Durm scored his first Borussia Dortmund goal as Jurgen Klopp's side dispatched Hertha Berlin 2-0 at Signal Iduna Park on Saturday to rise to seventh in the Bundesliga.

Neven Subotic's second league goal of the campaign put the hosts ahead inside 10 minutes, with Henrikh Mkhitaryan squandering the chance for a second soon afterwards.

Hertha – just three points clear of the relegation play-off position at kick-off – enjoyed the majority of possession as the first half wore on, but were unable to threaten Dortmund, who extended their lead through Durm's strike two minutes after the interval.

Though the visitors pressed late on, they were unable to trouble Dortmund, who held firm to avenge their 1-0 loss to Pal Dardai's side earlier in the season.Hertha, without a win in five, remain in 13th, while Dortmund sit just two points behind sixth-placed Schalke as their hunt for Europa League qualification continues.

Dortmund made an ideal start when Subotic put them in front in the ninth minute – slack marking from Hertha allowing the defender to head home unchallenged from Mkhitaryan's corner.

Mkhitaryan should have grabbed a second, the in-form playmaker shrugging off John Brooks on the edge of the box before firing a low effort just wide of the left-hand upright.

The Armenian almost turned provider again prior to the half-hour mark as he played in top-scorer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, but the striker was unable to better Hertha goalkeeper Thomas Kraft.

Hertha finally managed a foray into Dortmund territory with six minutes of the first half remaining – Nico Schulz surging into the box before feeding Valentin Stocker – but the Switzerland international blazed high over the crossbar.

Dortmund began the second half in blistering fashion, going further ahead in the 47th minute when Mkhitaryan worked it wide to Durm on the edge of the area.
The full-back cut inside onto his left, curling an effort towards goal that Kraft could only parry into the bottom-left corner.

Dortmund's domination continued, and they would have been out of sight had Aubameyang managed to capitalise on Kraft's sloppy pass, but the keeper recovered well to block the Gabon striker's low shot.

Kevin Kampl, replacing the injured Jakub Blaszczykowski, was the next to test Hertha's flagging back-line, carving through the midfield before finding Mkhitaryan, whose effort was blocked by Marvin Plattenhardt.

Kraft had to be alert to twice keep out Dortmund from grabbing a third in the closing stages, denying Shinji Kagawa before preventing Kampl tucking away the rebound.

And though Stocker almost snatched a consolation as stoppage time approached, Dortmund kept their cool to extend their unbeaten Bundesliga run to four matches.

Bayern Munich 0-1 Augsburg: Bobadilla downs 10 man hosts

    paul-verhaegh-augsburg-robert-lewandowski-bayern-munich-german-bundesliga-09052015_1m19cyrouf7ku1wb6p71aot0c6.jpg

Bayern Munich's torrid week continued with a 1-0 defeat at home to Augsburg on Saturday.Raul Bobadilla grabbed the winner for Augsburg to condemn Bayern to their first consecutive Bundesliga defeats in over a year.

Pepe Reina undermined coach Pep Guardiola's decision to rest players ahead of the Champions League semi-final second leg against Barcelona on Tuesday by getting sent off after just 12 minutes at the Allianz Arena.

The rested Manuel Neuer was hauled off the bench and had a busy afternoon as Augsburg, who missed the penalty that followed Reina's dismissal, battled their way to a rare result against the Bundesliga champions that keeps them on course for Europa League qualification.

Guardiola also rested Rafinha, Mehdi Benatia and Xabi Alonso following his side's 3-0 Champions League capitulation in midweek, with Mitchell Weiser, Dante, and Mario Gotze taking their places.

Bayern's difficulties began after two minutes, when Dante fouled Bobadilla and he took the free-kick himself, firing a thunderbolt from 20 yards that required a good save from Reina at full stretch to push it out to safety.

The hosts looked startled by Augsburg's high tempo start to the game, but Bayern were soon creating chances of their own.Gotze should have done better after he jinked down the left wing, only to fluff his shot from close range. He almost made amends with a raking shot from the edge of the box that clipped the post as it went wide with Augsburg goalkeeper Marwin Hitz well beaten.

Disaster struck for Bayern after 12 minutes, when a long ball put Bobadilla through one-on-one with Reina, and the Spaniard clumsily bundled him over inside the box, giving the referee no choice but to send him off.

Neuer's rest from first-team action had been brief, but his first task after coming on for Philipp Lahm was made easier when Paul Verhaegh slammed Augsburg's spot-kick onto the post.

Bobadilla continued to cause problems for Dante in the Bayern defence, and the striker had a claim for a second penalty waved away by referee Sascha Stegemann when the Brazilian struggled to contain him.A slip from Dante allowed Halil Altintop a clear chance, but he scuffed it wide with the whole goal to aim at.

Bayern spurned a golden chance to take the lead on the brink of half-time, but Robert Lewandowski – still sporting a face mask after fracturing his nose and jaw against former club Borussia Dortmund - fired over the crossbar when sent clean through by Jerome Boateng. An almost identical chance fell to Lewandowski just after the break, but Hitz was alert to the danger and cleared his lines.

Augsburg had the ball in the net on the hour mark when Hong Jeong-ho scored from a corner, only to see Stegemann rule it out for an infringement on Neuer by substitute Tobias Werner.Hitz then made a brilliant save to keep the scores level as Lewandowski teed up Weiser for a stinging shot at the other end.

The frailties in Bayern's depleted rearguard were finally exploited after 70 minutes, when substitute Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg broke down the left and played a wonderfully simple pass to Bobadilla, who made no mistake in tucking away his 10th league goal of the season. The goal prompted Guardiola to send on Rafinha and Claudio Pizarro to try and salvage something from the game, but Augsburg held on for a famous win.

Everton 0–2 Sunderland: Defoe & Graham secure precious lifeline

    1357002_heroa.jpg

Fortune smiled on Sunderland as Danny Graham and Jermain Defoe both scored deflected goals to move the Black Cats out of the relegation zone with a hard-fought victory over Everton.

Graham has endured a largely miserable two-and-a-half years since moving to the Stadium of Light from Swansea City, but his telling touch on Jordi Gomez's drive put Sunderland ahead after they had soaked up huge pressure from the hosts.

Dick Advocaat had targeted a point pre-match, with his set-up seemingly backing that up, Defoe playing the first half as an auxiliary right wing-back to sum up Sunderland's approach.

James McCarthy hit the post with a well-hit effort shortly after Graham's goal, but Defoe himself was the beneficiary of more penalty-box pinball to pile pressure on Sunderland's direct rivals at the bottom.

Having pulled themselves from the fire in the dying embers of last season, Sunderland again have a great chance of securing top-flight status for another season.

Everton's own hopes of salvaging a top-10 finish from their disappointing campaign are fading after a second-straight defeat.

Sunderland began with none of the urgency their situation required, allowing Everton to totally dominate the early going.

Having seen their resurgent run checked at Aston Villa last week, Everton took few risks with Romelu Lukaku often crowded out in attack as a result.

The visitors grew into the half somewhat, though their immediate and long-term plight was perhaps summed up as Defoe - who spent much of the half running towards his own goal tracking Leighton Baines - saw a fierce effort deflected wide by strike partner Connor Wickham.

Costel Pantilimon was called upon to keep scores level three minutes before the break, smothering Lukaku before denying Leon Osman's firm hit.

The pattern of play continued after the break and Lukaku was guilty of wasting two headed chances from corners.

The Belgian was punished with 54 minutes played as Gomez's sweet strike caught the foot of Graham and bounced over a helpless Tim Howard.

Seamus Coleman twice went close and McCarthy's arrowing shot clattered Pantilimon's right-hand post as Everton forced Sunderland to work for their win.

Republic of Ireland international Coleman also saw penalty appeals waved away but visiting nerves were settled as substitute Steven Fletcher weaved through a static Everton defence before finding fellow replacement Adam Johnson.

The winger's shot bounced off Coleman and onto Defoe's thigh before bobbling past Howard to spark wild celebrations in the away end.

Victory moves Sunderland onto 36 points, a tally enough to secure safety last term, and next weekend's home clash with Leicester City is shaping up to be a season-defining fixture.

Stoke City 3–0 Tottenham: Sorry Spurs sunk by rampant Potters

    1357702_heroa.jpg

Stoke City ended Tottenham's hopes of a top-four finish as they equalled their best points total in the Premier League with a 3-0 victory on Saturday.

Last season's haul of 50 points was matched as goals from Charlie Adam, Steven N'Zonzi and Mame Biram Diouf capped an impressive display from Mark Hughes' side.

Adam broke the deadlock after 21 minutes with a close-range header after poor defensive work from Jan Vertonghen, and N'Zonzi doubled the lead after another Tottenham mix-up involving Hugo Lloris and Eric Dier.

Spurs' hopes of a comeback were hit after 50 minutes as Vlad Chiriches became the seventh player to be shown red in as many meetings between the two sides at the Britannia Stadium.

With a man short, Tottenham had no answer to Stoke's dynamic performance, Diouf extending their advantage with four minutes to play.

Defeat mathematically ends any hopes Tottenham had of finishing in the Uefa Champions League places, meaning Mauricio Pochettino will have to settle for a Europa League spot at best.

Tottenham were immediately on the back foot as Stoke made a bright start, Marc Muniesa - making his first start since February in place of the suspended Marc Wilson - going agonisingly close in the third minute with a crisp volley over the crossbar.

Lloris was by far the busier of the two goalkeepers, but after saving from Marko Arnautovic, the Frenchman was beaten by Adam's fourth goal in six games.

Diouf made good ground down the right, where his cross was flicked on at the front post by Tottenham defender Vertonghen and Adam beat his marker to head past Lloris.

Jack Butland then had to be alert to preserve that lead as Muniesa diverted Erik Lamela’s free-kick towards his own goal, forcing the Stoke keeper to touch the ball onto the bar.

But Tottenham's attempts to get back into match were scuppered 11 minutes later.

Adam delivered a hanging cross from the right that Dier and Lloris failed to deal with, and their collision gifted the loose ball to N'Zonzi, who made no mistake with a composed finish.

Christian Eriksen brought a good save out of Butland early in the second half, but Tottenham's task was made tougher five minutes after the restart as a clumsy challenge from Chiriches on Diouf saw the defender shown a second yellow card.

With the man advantage Stoke turned the screw with some incisive breakaways, and Adam was denied a second just before the hour as Lloris got down well to turn his curling effort wide.

Even top scorer Harry Kane could not spark Tottenham out of their lacklustre display as he wasted his only chance, and their disappointing afternoon was compounded by Diouf's tap in from Arnautovic's low cross in the closing minutes.

Aston Villa 1–0 West Ham: Cleverley keeps Sherwood’s run going

    1357492_heroa.jpg

Tom Cleverley continued his form in front of goal as Aston Villa took another step towards Premier League safety with 1-0 victory over West Ham on Saturday.

Manchester United loanee Cleverley has looked rejuvenated under the stewardship of manager Tim Sherwood and made it three goals in as many games by tapping home Jack Grealish's excellent centre just after the half-hour mark.

It was no less than the hosts deserved for a fine first-half showing at Villa Park and Cleverley had already been denied by Adrian before his opener.

Perhaps understandably Villa appeared nervy in the second half, but the FA Cup finalists did enough to claim a potentially crucial three points.

Villa have now won three of their past four league games and are four points clear of the drop zone with just two matches remaining - meaning victory at Southampton will guarantee their survival.

West Ham's season continues to peter out and last weekend's win over Burnley was the only victory in six for Sam Allardyce's men, who drop to 10th.

The hosts, unchanged from last week's win over Everton, started confidently and West Ham goalkeeper Adrian made a smart parry to keep out Cleverley's well-struck volley from Fabian Delph's diagonal pass.

Another Delph delivery led to a chance for Christian Benteke, who failed to make clean contact with Jores Okore's knockdown from a tight angle.

The breakthrough finally came in the 31st minute.

Grealish showed ex-Villa man Stewart Downing a clean pair of heels to get to the left byline and his teasing ball across the face of goal was tapped in by Cleverley.

West Ham were visibly frustrated and Morgan Amalfitano was perhaps lucky to escape punishment for aiming a knee at Cleverley, albeit with little force.

The visitors then saw Cheikhou Kouyate go to ground during a corner, but their penalty claims were waved away as Kevin Nolan was adjudged to have fouled goalkeeper Shay Given.

West Ham had started with the same XI that beat Burnley, but Allardyce made two changes at the break with Amalfitano and Nolan withdrawn for Alex Song and Nene – the latter showing his intent with a powerful long-range effort that just cleared the crossbar.

Villa appeared slightly edgy at the start of the half, but Charles N'Zogbia showed neat footwork to get past left-back Aaron Cresswell only to chip his shot into the side-netting.

At the other end former Villa defender James Collins saw a looping header tipped over by Given, while Enner Valencia had the ball in the net when he headed in Nene's cross - but the forward was flagged offside and replays suggested he was just in front of full-back Kieran Richardson.

West Ham pushed for an equaliser as the clock wound down, but it was Villa who nearly scored a second when substitute Gabriel Agbonlahor - returning from a hamstring injury - raced clear only to lose balance and shoot wide.

Newcastle 1–1 West Brom: Perez goal stops the rot for Carver

    1358072_heroa.jpg

A first-half strike from Ayoze Perez helped Newcastle end a run of eight consecutive defeats against West Brom by claiming a draw that leaves them just two points above the relegation zone.

Having seen rivals Sunderland win 2-0 at Everton earlier on Saturday, John Carver's men approached the fixture under severe pressure to end a miserable run of form in front of their own fans at St James' Park.

West Brom increased the nerves among the home support when Victor Anichebe converted from Craig Gardner's free-kick in the 32nd minute.

But West Brom's advantage lasted only nine minutes as Ayoze Perez levelled for the hosts with a precise low strike.

Tony Pulis' West Brom were on the back foot for the majority of the second 45 minutes, yet would have taken all three points had Chris Brunt not struck the crossbar after 74 minutes.

The stalemate leaves Newcastle two points above 18th-placed Hull City - who lost 1-0 to relegated Burnley - with two games remaining.

Only the woodwork prevented West Brom from taking an eighth-minute lead as Youssouf Mulumbu headed against the upright from Craig Gardner's near-post corner.

Newcastle responded well, though, and would have gone ahead had Moussa Sissoko's effort not been cleared off the line by Joleon Lescott after Fabricio Coloccini had done well to nod Ryan Taylor's free-kick into the midfielder's path.

And Carver's men were immediately punished by Anichebe, who met Gardner's free-kick from the right with a well-executed header into the bottom-right corner.

Again Newcastle displayed good spirit and were rewarded for their determination by a superb finish from Perez.

The Spaniard controlled Taylor's short free-kick and fired a precise shot through a sea of bodies and beyond a stranded Boaz Myhill.

West Brom went close to taking the lead three minutes after the restart, Brunt shooting wide at the far post at the end of a well-worked move from the visitors.

Brunt was somehow denied again as his second attempt cannoned off the crossbar after seeing his initial effort blocked by Paul Dummett.

Substitute Saido Berahino was then twice thwarted by Tim Krul as West Brom threatened to deepen the gloom on Tyneside.

Still, Newcastle finished the match on the front foot, creating multiple chances in the closing minutes.

Remy Cabella shot over, Sissoko produced a diving save from Myhill and Sammy Ameobi went close with an overhead kick, but Newcastle could not find the goal that would have put them on the verge of survival.

Leicester City 2–0 Southampton: Mahrez double edges Foxes closer to safety

    1357302_heroa.jpg

Riyad Mahrez's first goals since December continued Leicester City's remarkable Premier League revival with a 2-0 triumph over Southampton.

Algeria winger Mahrez struck twice during the first half to thrill a raucous King Power Stadium and secure a sixth win in seven matches for Leicester.

City's victory helped to confirm relegation for Burnley, despite the latter's 1-0 win at third-bottom Hull City, who are three points behind 15th-placed Leicester with two matches to play.

For Southampton, another lacklustre performances meant a sixth loss in their past 11 games, although defeat for Tottenham at Stoke City means Ronald Koeman's team remain one point shy of automatic qualification for the UEFA Europa League

Paulo Gazzaniga made his first start of the season in goal as one of four changes by Koeman, while Nigel Pearson stuck with the same Leicester XI that comprehensively beat Newcastle United last weekend.

Robert Huth looped an early header over amid a confident start from Leicester that was rewarded in the seventh minute.

There appeared to be little danger when Mahrez collected a loose ball centrally, but he bustled past Southampton midfielders Harrison Reed and Steven Davies to arrow a low drive into the bottom right-hand corner from 20 yards.

The buoyant mood at the King Power Stadium was checked by home midfielder Matty James going to ground with what appeared to be a serious knee injury, although the hosts doubled their advantage with 19 minutes played.

Southampton were unable to recover from a poor clearance by Gazzaniga and Jamie Vardy hooked the ball across goal for Mahrez to prod home left footed.

Sadio Mane passed up a chance to reduce the deficit, heading over when Davies nodded back into the six-yard box, but they should have been further behind 10 minutes before half-time.

Mahrez again got the better of the recalled Reed to slide a pass through to Vardy, only for Gazzaniga to come out on top in the one-on-one.

In the 58th minute, Mahrez had the opportunity to complete his hat-trick, but dragged wide left footed after Victor Wanyama misjudged a headed clearance.

Leicester's new-found defensive solidity ensured Southampton enjoyed few sights of goal during a more even second half, although Kasper Schmeichel was at full-stretch to keep out a dipping 20-yard effort from Mane inside the final 20 minutes.

Veteran midfielder Esteban Cambiasso almost crowned another influential display for Leicester by clipping a shot against the side netting, as Pearson's men closed out three points that put them on the brink of a relegation escape that seemed improbable a month ago.

Barcelona 2-0 Real Sociedad: Neymar & Pedro the difference against Moyes' men

    neymar-fc-barcelona-primera-division-05092015_150qln9gnr2wn1n625fq9d2k9f.jpg

Neymar helped to keep Barcelona on course for La Liga glory with the decisive goal in a battling 2-0 win over Real Sociedad.

Heading into the match with a slender two-point advantage over rivals Real Madrid at the summit and buoyed by Wednesday's spectacular 3-0 Champions League win over Bayern Munich, Barcelona endured a frustrating first half at Camp Nou.

Sociedad claimed a famous 1-0 victory over their illustrious opponents in January and remained in with a chance of repeating the dose as waves of Barca attacks were repelled.

Luis Enrique's team began the second period with renewed vigour and were rewarded when Neymar nodded in a 51st-minute opener. The match remained in the balance until substitute Pedro rifled home a superb overhead kick to quell Sociedad's hopes of a late rally.

It was a goal that put the pressure back on Real Madrid, with Barca in the driving seat for their penultimate Liga match at Atletico Madrid - a fixture that could be affected by potential strike action relating to a dispute over Spanish football's new television rights agreement.

Fresh from his midweek heroics, Lionel Messi tested Sociedad goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli with a looping header from Dani Alves' cross.

Alves supplied the ammunition again when Luis Suarez glanced over in the ninth minute before Rulli got out to smother Neymar's shot following a one-two with Messi.

A foray forward from Gerard Pique called Rulli into action once more and outcome did not match ambition when the Barca centre-back tried to convert the rebound with an overhead kick.Suarez planted another header off target in the 33rd minute after Messi followed some dazzling footwork with a precise chip across the area.

Rafinha combined with Marc Bartra from Xavi's free-kick - three players recalled by Barcelona coach Luis Enrique - six minutes before the break but the former was denied by an excellent block from Mikel Gonzalez.

Alves then flashed a drive wide, but David Moyes' team held out under relentless pressure to reach half-time on level terms.

Rulli picked up where he left off before the break, pushing Barta's header from Xavi's corner out of the top corner.A magnificent, last-ditch challenge from Inigo Martinez thwarted Suarez, but the opener was not long in coming.

Precise left-footed deliveries by Messi from the right were an established feature of the contest and his clipped ball glanced off Mikel, with Neymar was on hand to score for the 22nd time in La Liga this season.

Messi had a rasping shot blocked as he searched in vain for the goal his efforts deserved before Pedro clinched the points in stunning fashion.Luis Enrique celebrated his 45th birthday this week and he can reflect on two performances that keep the treble firmly in Barca's sights.

AC Milan 2-1 Roma: Van Ginkel and Destro offer Inzaghi reprieve

    1360012_heroa.jpg

AC Milan offered some reprieve to Filippo Inzaghi as they beat Roma 2-1 at San Siro on Saturday.

After five games without a win the fallen giants have found themselves marooned in mid-table, leading to fan protests and speculation over head coach Inzaghi's future, but the gloom was lifted on Saturday.

Marco van Ginkel netted for the first time in over two years late in the first half to give Milan the lead at the break, with the hosts slightly edging a competitive opening 45 minutes.

And Roma loanee Destro doubled their lead just before the hour to lift the pressure on Inzaghi, while leaving his parent club vulnerable to being overtaken by city rivals Lazio in the race for second.

A controversial penalty - converted by substitute Francesco Totti - gave Roma hope, but Milan were able to hold on for all three points.

The defeat is a blow to Roma's hopes of achieving automatic Champions League qualifications, with Lazio able to climb to second if they can beat Inter on Sunday.

Given their recent barren spell, it was no surprise to see Milan immediately on the back foot and the hosts needed a goalline clearance from Gabriel Paletta to clear Gervinho's low cross inside the opening minute.

Eventually Inzaghi's side showed some attacking intent as Luca Antonelli met a cross-field pass in the final third, playing a perfectly cushioned header for Keisuke Honda, only for Morgan De Sanctis to make an excellent save from the Japan international.

Chances were coming at both ends and after 17 minutes Roma were denied the opener by the post, Kostas Manolas seeing his header thud against the upright with Daniele De Rossi was unable to convert the rebound.

Milan finished the half positively and should have been ahead through Giacomo Bonaventura, the forward meeting a Van Ginkel cross, but De Sanctis was equal to it with a reflex save.

They did not have to wait long for the opener, though, as three minutes later Van Ginkel ghosted in front of Radja Nainggolan at the near post to tap home Honda's low cross from the right.

The hosts doubled their lead after 59 minutes through Destro. Honda was again the creator with an enticing cross from the right that the striker headed in from close range.

Despite Milan's two-goal cushion, their nerves quickly returned when Juan Iturbe was adjudged to have been fouled by a combination of Alex and Nigel de Jong inside the penalty area.

Totti assumed responsibility from the spot and made no mistake, his penalty creeping under the body of Diego Lopez to give Roma a lifeline.

Roma continued to push for an equaliser, but Milan's defence remained resolute, Lopez making a good save low to his right to deny Iturbe and secure the points.

:love:Crystal Palace 1-2 Manchester United: Fellaini heads Van Gaal's men within touching distance of Champions League

    1358672_heroa.jpg

Manchester United came out 2-1 winners after an entertaining Premier League duel with Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Saturday evening, putting them on the cusp of Champions League qualification.

Louis van Gaal's side took the lead midway through the first half when Scott Dann was controversially punished for a handball, Juan Mata converting the resulting penalty.

Palace grew into the game, however, and equalised after the break when Jason Puncheon's fizzing free kick took a deflection off Daley Blind on its way past David de Gea.

De Gea made a superb stop to deny Glenn Murray as the game got deeper into the second half and his resilience was rewarded when opposite number Julian Speroni's terrible late rush off his late cleared the way for Marouane Fellaini to finish off Ashley Young's cross.

Louis van Gaal once again had to make do without key United midfielder Michael Carrick, though Blind stepped into the England man's role capably and struck Speroni's left-hand post early on from 25 yards.

Palace's threat came predictably from out wide and Wilfried Zaha regularly had the beating of Antonio Valencia on his first game against United since leaving permanently in January, though the winger's delivery let him down.

The hosts gifted United the opener as Dann stooped to block Young's centre, only to be punished for handball by referee Michael Oliver – Mata stepping up to beat Speroni from 12 yards.

Headaches soon arrived for Van Gaal, however, as captain Wayne Rooney struggled through the half with a thigh issue and Luke Shaw was forced off with apparent concussion after catching a James McArthur elbow to the face, Jonny Evans replacing the teenager.

The United captain came out early for the second half in an attempt to prove his fitness but he was withdrawn before play resumed, Radamel Falcao coming on in his place.

Palace boss Alan Pardew signalled his intent by replacing Joe Ledley with Puncheon at the break and he was swiftly rewarded as the former Southampton man stepped up to a 20-yard free kick, whipping it over the wall and in via a slight nick off Blind.

Selhurst Park's fervent support ramped up a notch as Palace looked to add United's scalp to those collected against Liverpool, Tottenham and Manchester City at home this term but they found De Gea in stunning form.

The Spaniard somehow denied Murray six yards from goal before getting down smartly to keep out Zaha's volley.

And Fellaini capitalised on his defence's sturdiness, stealing in to nod home after Speroni's error to take United to the cusp of a return to Europe's top table.

Real Madrid 2-2 Valencia: Ronaldo misses penalty as Ancelotti's men are held

Real Madrid dropped two vital points in the title race as Valencia held them to a 2-2 draw on Saturday in a game which saw Cristiano Ronaldo miss a penalty.

News of an impending strike resulting in the postponement of league games after May 16 dominated much of the build-up and things were no smoother on the pitch for Madrid, who hit the woodwork three times and only secured a share of the spoils during the closing stages to leave Barca four points clear with two matches left.

Madrid controlled much of the first half and were denied by the crossbar twice early on through Gareth Bale and Ronaldo before an injury to Toni Kroos was quickly followed by Paco Alcacer's opener.

Javi Fuego doubled Valencia's lead shortly after and then goalkeeper Diego Alves equalled Andoni Zubizarreta's record of 16 penalty saves in La Liga, as he thwarted Ronaldo just before the interval.

The Real fightback began early in the second half as Pepe headed in from a corner and, as Alvaro Negredo saw two chances go begging, former Valencia youngster Isco was the next on the scoresheet, sealing a draw in spectacular fashion late on. A draw, however, leaves their title bid in tatters.

Real began full of purpose and almost went ahead 13 minutes in, Ronaldo allowing Bale to take a free kick and the Wales star struck the crossbar with a rasping drive from 25 yards.

The woodwork came to Valencia's rescue again five minutes later, this time denying Ronaldo, who met Kroos' corner delivery with a fierce header that came back off the bar.

And Valencia took full advantage of their double reprieve, breaking the deadlock against the run of play just a minute later, Alcacer guiding Jose Gaya's fine left-wing cross beyond Iker Casillas, who could only palm it into the net.

Madrid's gameplan unravelled further in the 25th minute as an apparent thigh problem forced Kroos off and things got worse shortly after, as Dani Parejo's deep free kick was nodded past Casillas by Fuego, opening up a two-goal lead.

Luck continued to desert Madrid as the first half drew to a close.

Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez saw his scuffed effort from 12 yards strike the left-hand post in the 40th minute, before Alves palmed away a Ronaldo penalty on the stroke of half-time after Bale had been hauled down.

Real's pressure continued at the start of the second half and Alves looked destined to keep them at bay throughout when he produced a smart save to deny Chicharito at the near post.

The hosts were back in it by the 56th minute, though, as Pepe rose highest to nod James Rodriguez's corner in, rendering Alves helpless on this occasion.

Sergio Ramos nearly restored parity 17 minutes from time with a towering header of his own, but the inspirational Alves kept his effort out with a desperate save to his left.

Substitute Negredo spurned two fine chances shortly after his 69th-minute introduction and Madrid capitalised, Isco finding the top-left corner from 25 yards against his former team to set up a nail-biting finish.

The hosts piled the pressure as they desperately sought a dramatic late winner, but Valencia held on to seal a point, leaving Madrid on the brink of defeat in the title race.

Their attentions now turn to keeping their Champions League defence alive against Juventus on Wednesday, with Carlo Ancelotti's men 2-1 down after the semi-final first leg.

Lyon crash to Caen defeat to leave PSG on the brink of Ligue 1 title

Paris Saint-Germain are within a point of retaining their Ligue 1 title after closest challengers Lyon went down to a shock 3-0 defeat at Caen on Saturday.

PSG romped to a 6-0 win over Guingamp on Friday and Lyon collapsed as they tried to respond, with Nicolas Benezet netting twice in the space of four minutes as half-time approached - the opener aided by an error from Lyon goalkeeper Anthony Lopes.

Sloan Privat completed the scoring five minutes from time, stylishly crowning a counter-attack to considerably ease Caen's relegation fears.

One team who will definitely be playing in Ligue 2 next season are Metz, who had their demotion from the France's top flight confirmed by a humiliating 4-0 loss to Lorient.

The hosts needed three points to maintain their slim survival hopes but in reality they never got close.

Mehdi Mostefa converted a 12th-minute corner and Romain Philippoteaux found the bottom corner to make it 2-0 at the break.

Lamine Kone and Jordan Ayew piled on further misery for Metz, moving Lorient five points above the drop zone with two games to play in the process.

Fellow strugglers Reims beat Evian 3-2 to move four clear of the bottom three, with David Ngog bagging a double.

Evian led twice through Gilles Sunu and Mathieu Duhamel but Benjamin Moukandjo secured a vital late triumph for the visitors.

A 1-0 win at Rennes courtesy of Gael Danic's 78th-minute goal secured Ligue 1 football for Bastia next season.

In the race for European football, Bordeaux remained in the hunt by seeing off Nantes 2-1 in their final outing at Stade Chaban-Delmas.

Diego Rolan hauled Bordeaux level after Jordan Veretout's 15th-minute penalty and he ensured a rapturous farewell to the famous ground by notching a 69th-minute winner.

Elsewhere, Toulouse rounded off a stellar day for teams near the foot of the table by beating Lille 3-2.
