Mexico 6-0 Cuba: Peralta hat trick caterpults Herrera's men into form

    oribeperalta-cropped_5joo16q6eem71k1djs30pswbn.jpg

Mexico crushed Cuba 6-0 to end a seven-match winless run and storm to the top of Group C at 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Miguel Herrera's side had not won since May but Oribe Peralta struck a hat trick as El Tri destroyed an undermanned Cuba in their Gold Cup opener on Thursday in Chicago. It was just Mexico's fourth win from 12 matches in 2015.

After Herrera took a completely different squad to last month's Copa America and saw it eliminated at the group stage, Mexico drew with Costa Rica and Honduras in Gold Cup warmup friendlies.Cuba was without seven players and coach Raul Gonzalez at Soldier Field, with one of those players - Keiler Garcia - reportedly having defected.

Gonzalez and the other six players have failed to arrive in the United States due to visa issues, meaning assistant coach Walter Benitez was left in charge of just 16 men on Thursday.

Mexico dominated from the outset but had to wait until the 17th minute for Peralta to open the scoring from a goal-mouth scramble, although the America striker completed his brace before halftime as Herrera's men led 4-0 at the break.

Peralta's third goal came in the 62nd minute, while Giovani dos Santos completed the victory with 15 minutes remaining, sending Mexico ahead of Trinidad and Tobago on goal difference in Group C.

With 84 spots between the two teams on the FIFA rankings, it was perhaps unsurprising that 23rd-ranked Mexico was quickly on the front foot in Chicago.
Fullback Miguel Layun, who would find space time and again down the left, shot straight at goalkeeper Diosvelis Guerra in just the second minute.Captain Andres Guardado almost willed the ball into Guerra's net just past the quarter-hour mark, as Mexico hit the front through Peralta.

Guardado first released Carlos Vela but the Real Sociedad man was denied by Guerra. The rebound fell to Guardado, whose shot was cleared off the line, and then Mexico's skipper nodded another ricochet towards Peralta for the goal.

It was 2-0 five minutes later when Vela converted a loose ball, while Peralta added his second goal in the 38th minute after a pass deflected to him at the top of the box.

Peralta failed to convert a one-on-one opportunity soon after - one of numerous chances spurned by Mexico throughout the match - but Guardado ensured it was 4-0 at halftime with a header.

After a slightly subdued start to the second period, Peralta completed his treble just after the hour mark, thumping the ball over the line after beating both Guerra and defender Yasmany Lopez in an aerial challenge.Giovani dos Santos came on in the 57th minute, replacing his brother Jonathan, and scored Mexico's sixth in a classic case of third time lucky.

The Villarreal forward's first effort on goal was smothered by Guerra, while he put the ball in the net a few minutes later only to be denied by the offside flag. But Dos Santos got on the score sheet in the 75th minute, bursting onto a long pass to slot the ball home.

Gerrard tells Sterling: Be a man about Liverpool exit

    1427832_heroa.jpg

Steven Gerrard has told Raheem Sterling "to be a man" about wanting to leave Liverpool after the player missed the first two days of pre-season preparations.

The winger, who does not want to take part in the pre-season tour of Australia and Asia, is a target for Manchester City after telling Brendan Rodgers of his desire to leave Anfield this summer.

Liverpool began their preparations for the new campaign on Wednesday without Sterling, who informed the club he was unable to attend due to illness and repeated that claim on Thursday.

"I'm not happy with all that carry-on and I don't think there's any need for it. They all need to be men about the situation," Gerrard told Sky Sports.

"Raheem needs to go in and speak to the owners and to Brendan [Rodgers] himself, tell them what he wants and go about it that way. You don't have to throw illnesses in and refuse to go on tour.

"There are millions and millions of Liverpool fans around the world who are itching to see Raheem Sterling in a Liverpool kit. So I don't think it's fair on them if he is behaving like that."

The 20-year-old's agent, Aidy Ward, has claimed all trust between his client and Rodgers has evaporated over the long-running transfer saga, while Liverpool are set to fly out to Bangkok on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Gerrard is in line to make his LA Galaxy debut against Club America on Saturday.

    Wijnaldum set for Newcastle medical

    1631862_heroa.jpg

PSV have confirmed that Georginio Wijnaldum has been given permission to leave the club's pre-season preparations and complete talks and a medical with Newcastle as he nears a move to St James' Park.

Steve McClaren was hopeful of completing a deal for the PSV captain despite seeing local rivals Sunderland fail with an earlier bid and they are now closing in on the capture of the Netherlands international.

"PSV are nearing an agreement with Newcastle United and Wijnaldum has been given permission to finalise negotiations and undergo a medical examination," the club tweeted on Friday.

Wijnaldum told PSV he wanted a move to St James' Park after talking to close friend and Newcastle midfielder Vurnon Anita and he is now set to travel to England to seal the move.

Goal understands Newcastle have made an offer in the region of £13 million (€18m) for Wijnaldum, with club director Lee Charnley working to broker the deal during the week.

New Newcastle manager Steve McClaren confirmed on Thursday the club were closing in on a first summer signing, telling reporters: "Believe me, there is a massive willingness from the club to spend.

"I've come in and looked at the plan, looked at the calibre of players we're targeting and said 'wow'."

Newcastle are also understood to be in talks to sign Florian Thauvin, Joel Matip and Charlie Austin.

Asamoah Gyan has reportedly become one of the world's best-paid players after joining Shanghai SIPG from Al Ain for an undisclosed fee.

The Ghana captain had been playing his trade in United Arab Emirates since 2011, having initially arrived on a loan deal from Sunderland, and still had three years left on his contract with his Abu Dhabi-based employers.

However, Gyan will be formally presented as a Shanghai SIPG player next week after penning a lucrative two-year contract with the Chinese Super League side.

"I thank God for this special day, to my family, former team-mates at Al Ain and to my fans," the striker wrote on his official website."I reserve the rest of my comments for the official unveiling next week."

Shanghai SIPG, who are coached by Sven Goran Eriksson, have reportedly agreed to pay Gyan €315,000 per week, which would make him one of the top 10 highest-paid players in the world.

The 29-year-old attacker, who has netted 48 times in 90 appearances for his country, counts Rennes and Udinese among his former clubs.

Arda signs five-year deal with Barcelona

    1632902_heroa.jpg

Arda Turan signed a five-year deal with Barcelona on Friday and immediately dismissed doubts about his first-team prospects, revealing that coach Luis Enrique pushed for his arrival.

The Blaugrana agreed a €41 million deal with Atletico Madrid for the Turkey international on Monday, though the Catalans retain the right to veto the transfer - at a cost of €4.1m - should Josep Maria Bartomeu fail to be re-elected be next week's elections and his successor deem the attacking midfielder surplus to requirements.

In addition, Arda is not eligible to represent his new club until January as Barca are currently serving a year-long transfer ban related to the movement of players under the age of 18.

However, Arda insists he is unworried about potentially having to return to the Vicente Calderon without having played a single game for the Catalans, revealing that his arrival has already been welcomed by Blaugrana boss Luis Enrique.

"There's no pressure, I'm just a football player," the 28-year-old told reporters at a press conference on Friday. "I'm just here to help Barca achieve more success. Anything else is not for me to worry about.

"I want to get acclimatised at Barca while I can't play so I can give everything I have when I do play.

"I spoke with Luis Enrique before signing and I also got a message from [Barca midfielder Andres] Iniesta.

"I liked that Luis Enrique called me to tell me he wanted me. I am very happy. I'm going to thank him. It was my life-long dream to be here."

Arda also dismissed the suggestion that he can be Xavi's successor at Camp Nou, with the veteran playmaker having left Camp Nou for Al Sadd this summer.

"First of all, nobody can replace Xavi because he is a great, a unique figure in the world of football," the versatile winger added. "He was an icon for Barcelona and Spain.

"I'm a different type of player. I'm not Xavi. But I'll try to contribute what I can with my own attributes and style."

Arda: Ronaldo is special but he'll never be like Messi

New Barcelona signing Arda Turan says that, while Cristiano Ronaldo is a "special" player, the Real Madrid superstar will never reach the same level as Lionel Messi.

Turkey international Arda completed his €41 million move from Atletico Madrid to the Blaugrana on Friday, putting pen to paper on a five-year contract with the Catalan club.

The attacking midfielder will not be able to play for Luis Enrique's side until January as Barca are currently serving a Fifa-imposed transfer ban relating to the movement of under-age players but Arda explained that he never had any doubts about moving to Camp Nou as he is so excited about lining up alongside the man he believes to be the greatest footballer of all time.

"Cristiano is special but he'll never be like Messi," the 28-year-old told reporters at a press conference on Friday.

"I don't think that there's ever been anyone like Messi - or ever will be."

However, Arda admitted that he is arguably even more excited about playing in the same team as Andres Iniesta and insisted that there is room for him in Barca's all-star attacking line-up.

“Hopefully I will play play alongside Iniesta, Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez," he stated. "I think you can see that picture of the five of us playing together.

"At Atletico, I always said that Messi is the best player in the world, but Iniesta is my idol."

Arda, who was also linked with Liverpool, Chelsea, AC Milan and Paris Saint-Germain, also revealed that he could have moved elsewhere but that he always had his heart set on a switch to Catalunya.

"I received lots of offers, but when I heard from Barca I pushed all the others aside," he added.

"Those who know me know that I've dreamt of playing for Barca since I was a kid.

"I'm happy to come to the best club in the world. I'll try to give the best I've have.

"I've always liked having to really fight in order to win; I think here people will see the best Arda."

    Sterling returns to Liverpool training

    raheem-sterling-cropped_1pomn2pbxka2d1xxv6atx9jdn2.jpg

Raheem Sterling has reported for Liverpool pre-season training after calling in sick twice earlier this week, Goal understands.

The winger was absent as the first-team squad returned to Melwood on Wednesday, citing illness, before repeating the claim on Thursday amid ongoing speculation over his future.

Sterling told Brendan Rodgers of his desire to leave Liverpool at the end of last season, with Manchester City since having two bid rejected and are preparing a third.

Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard told Sterling to "be a man about it" after the 20-year-old refused to take part in the club's upcoming pre-season tour of Australia and Asia.

    Henderson appointed Liverpool captain

    1279672_heroa.jpg

Liverpool have confirmed Jordan Henderson as the club's new captain, taking over from Steven Gerrard, who left at the end of last season.

Henderson, who signed a contract extension in April, had been hotly tipped to be named as permanent skipper after deputising for the new LA Galaxy man in recent months, telling Goal he was ready in June.

"I've always wanted to take more responsibility, especially at the stage of my career I'm at," he said.

"I feel I'm getting a bit older now, a bit more mature and of course I want to take more responsibility for the team but at the same time, I think it's up to all of us as a team to take more responsibility on the pitch and make sure we put in good performances.

"When I've been vice-captain I've just tried to do my best for the team as I always have and to learn as much as I can from Stevie, like I have from when I first came to the club. But we've got a lot of captains and a lot of leaders in the dressing room so I'm sure whoever he [Rodgers] picks, the lads will be right behind him.

"I've think I've learned a lot from Steven. I have from when I first came to the club, he's been a huge role model and leader to all of us. All of us have learned a lot from him; just being with him every day, training with him every day, you learn a lot from him."

Upon confirmation, Brendan Rodgers hailed Henderson's attributes and growth since joining from Sunderland in a deal worth around £20 million in 2011, going on to captain the side 19 times.

"Jordan is someone who leads through example - through his actions, attitude and application," Rodgers told the club's official website. "He shows total commitment to the game and is a role model professional.

"He is also greatly respectful of the great traditions associated with being Liverpool captain and the responsibilities that come with it. He has been blessed to learn first-hand from one of the greatest the club has ever had, in Steven Gerrard.

"Jordan has grown as a person and as a player since arriving at Liverpool and is ready to take up this challenge. He will be his own person, with his own style of leadership and his own ideas and methods."

Roy Keane takes 'legal action' against Paddy Power

    1487222_heroa.jpg

Bookmaker Paddy Power has confirmed that Roy Keane is taking "legal action" over the use of his image in a promotional billboard ahead of Republic of Ireland's Euro 2016 qualifier against Scotland in June.

The billboard featured an image of Keane in the style of the character William Wallace from the 1995 film 'Braveheart' accompanied by the words: "You may take our points, but at least we have our freedom".

"Roy Keane has taken legal action against us following his face appearing on our braveheart billboard ahead of the Ireland Scotland game," read a statement from Paddy Power. "It's with the lawyers so obviously we can't talk about it, but hopefully they won't take our freedom to have a bit of craic."

The bookmaker has taken a light-hearted view of the situation, posting a number of humorous tweets on its official Twitter page, including one that declares they are "READY" for the case.

Ireland went on to draw 1-1 with their Euro 2016 Group D qualifying rivals Scotland at the Aviva Stadium after Jonathan Walters' opening goal was nullified by an own goal from John O'Shea.

    Marcelo extends Real Madrid contract

Real Madrid have announced that defender Marcelo has signed a new contract binding him to the Santiago Bernabeu until 2020.

The Brazil international still had three years to run on his previous deal with los Blancos but has now decided to extend his stay in the Spanish capital for an additional two seasons.

Marcelo joined Madrid from Fluminense in January 2007 and has long since established himself as the club's first-choice left-back.

The 27-year-old has won three Liga titles during his time at the Bernabeu, while he also played a key role in the 2014 Champions League triumph, scoring a goal in the final against Atletico Madrid.

Marcelo, who missed Brazil's Copa America campaign with a back injury, becomes the second Madrid defender to commit his future to the club this week, with fellow full-back Dani Carvajal also having signed on until 2020 on Wednesday.

Former Madrid defender David Mateos has told Goal that Marcelo represents an ideal candidate to become a team captain should Iker Casillas and Sergio Ramos depart this summer.

Official: Atletico sign Ferreira Carrasco from Monaco

    842602_heroa.jpg

Atletico Madrid have confirmed the permanent transfer of Monaco winger Yannick Ferreira Carrasco on a five-year deal.

The Belgium international, 21, is believed to have cost the 2013-14 Liga champions around €20 million, with coach Diego Simeone seeing him as a like-for-like replacement for Barcelona-bound Arda Turan.

Having beaten the likes of Tottenham to Carrasco's signature, the Vicente Calderon club's sporting director Jose Luis Perez Caminero lauded the talent of the former Genk youth player who spent five seasons at Stade Louis II.

"We are very satisfied with the agreement we reached with Monaco, because Yannick is a player with huge prospects and an incredible future," he told the club's website.

"He is a player with great speed, who's excellent at driving the ball and has a great shot. He will contribute perfectly to our aim of increasing the quality of our team and the competitiveness in the group. I am convinced that he will contribute a lot to the team."

Carrasco joins Luciano Vietto and Jackson Martinez as Atletico arrivals in the Spanish pre-season as the club look to try to reclaim the Liga title they spectacularly won a little over 12 months ago.

Mitrovic to join Newcastle 'in coming hours', says agent

    1157282_heroa.jpg

Anderlecht striker Aleksandar Mitrovic will join Newcastle "in the coming hours", according to the player's agent.

The 20-year-old, who scored 20 goals in 37 Belgian Pro League games last season, has long been touted a target for Newcastle manager Steve McClaren, with a fee of €18 million (£13m) mooted.

"The formalisation of the transfer will be made in the coming hours," Pini Zahavi is quoted as saying by Sudinfo.

McClaren told a fans forum on Thursday that he was in no rush to strengthen a squad who narrowly avoided relegation from the Premier League on the final day of last season.

However, later in the day, the former Derby man revealed the club were close to securing their first summer arrival and confirmation that PSV captain Georginio Wijnaldum was set for a medical came on Friday.

Goal understands Newcastle are also in talks to sign Florian Thauvin, Joel Matip and Charlie Austin.

Kondogbia: I never said yes to AC Milan

    geoffrey-kondogbia-inter-milan_1jwqxkerhf8ab1e7t2wzzawryc.jpg

Geoffrey Kondogbia has dismissed the suggestion that he ever agreed to join AC Milan, insisting that he decided to move to Inter the moment he spoke with coach Roberto Mancini.

The midfielder looked certain to leave Monaco for the Rossoneri this summer, with Milan CEO Adriano Galliani claiming that everything had been agreed with both the player and the Ligue 1 club. However, Milan were ultimately outbid by city rivals Inter, who paid €40 million for the Frenchman at the 11th hour to secure his signature.

Kondogbia, though, has claimed that he only made his mind up on where to continue his career after receiving a phone call from Nerazzurri coach Mancini.

"Why did I choose Inter instead of Milan? It was because I believe that Inter are closer to me," he told reporters at a press conference on Friday.

"I spoke to the coach and he convinced me that this was the best project for me.
"Mancini told me many things. When a coach like this calls you, you cannot say no.
"But I never said yes to Milan."

Indeed, Kondogbia believes that he has joined a club capable of challenging Juventus for next season's Serie A title."I chose the Italian league because I think that it's the best next step for my career."It's the right moment and right league in which to improve.

"The Scudetto is possible for Inter. We're working to obtain the very best results."
Inter had been hoping to sign Yaya Toure before the Manchester City ace performed a dramatic u-turn and decided to stay at the Etihad.Kondogbia has often been compared to the Ivorian and the 22-year-old admitted that the former Barcelona man is an idol of his.

"I have been compared to both Yaya Toure and Patrick Vieira because we're similar but my model is Toure," he added. "I can play in every role in midfield."

Darmian confirms imminent Manchester United move

    1627672_heroa.jpg

Torino right-back Matteo Darmian says he is "very excited" about his imminent move to Manchester United.

Goal understands that United have agreed a deal worth €18 million (£12.9m) plus €2m (£1.4m) in add-ons with the Turin club for the Italy international and an announcement is expected in the coming days.

Darmian, who made 46 appearances in all competitions in 2014-15, has now expressed his delight at his impending transfer, though he has refused to publicly announce that he will join United.

He is quoted as saying by gianlucadimarzio.com: "I'm very excited, we'll face this new adventure. It's a dream, I'm superstitious so I won't say anything until the signatures, let's wait.

"I say thank you to Torino and their fans who have been great these years."

Torino president Urbana Cairo revealed on Thursday that the deal had yet to be finalised, but the transfer appears to have accelerated in the past 24 hours.

    Official: West Ham sign Ogbonna

West Ham have signed Angelo Ogbonna from Juventus, the club have confirmed.

The centre-back has signed a four-year deal with the club, who have beaten off competition to sign the defender.

The Hammers opened talks with the Italian club at the start of the week, and subsequently won the race to secure the defender's signature ahead of Everton and Southampton, despite interest from their Premier League rivals.

Juventus have revealed that the fee for the defender amounts to £7.9 million, spread over three years.

Ogbonna, who has been capped 10 times by Italy, has struggled to secure regular first-team football at Juventus and will now help the club in their Europa League campaign, with the club having progressed to the second qualifying round with a 4-0 aggregate win over Lusitanos on Thursday.

Ogbonna becomes Slaven Bilic's third key signing of the summer, following the signings of Pedro Obiang and Dimitri Payet.

Lahm: I don't want to see Schweinsteiger leave

Bayern Munich skipper Philipp Lahm has admitted that he would be sad to see long-time colleague Bastian Schweinsteiger leave the club.

The current Germany captain has been widely linked with a move to Manchester United with just a year left on his Allianz Arena deal and club CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge admitted that his head had been turned by interest from England.

Lahm and Schweinsteiger have spent almost their entire careers together and though the right-back wants to continue playing with his old friend, he will respect any decision he takes."Of course I would regret him leaving," he told Goal.

"I took my decision to stop playing for the national team. Basti and I aren't the youngest guys around any more. It's us who make decisions and everyone should accept them."There's no reason for me to start a conversation with Bastian. We've played in the same team since we were 16 apart from my two years at Stuttgart.

"We've gone through a lot together. For me, he's an exceptional player. The decision about his future should be taken by him and the club. No other player should be involved."

Lahm also revealed that he considered leaving the club himself seven years ago to pursue his goal of winning the Champions League but is glad he stayed put, eventually lifting the trophy with his boyhood club."It was a topic seven years ago because my contract didn't have that long left on it at the time," he explained.

"I thought about leaving. I thought about a new challenge. It was always the most important thing for me to be as successful as possible with my club, Bayern.

"Maybe I would have had the chance to win the Champions League some time before I eventually did. But it would not have been the same emotionally."Lahm also advised the club to remain vigilant in the transfer market but says there are no specific weaknesses they need to work on.

"The team have shown they can compete in every competition. We had many, many injury problems last season. If everyone had stayed fit, our chances would have been much bigger.

"But I said this five years ago: Bayern must watch the market and know where to improve the team. Right now, we are competitive."

Finally, Lahm denied rumours that he could return to international duty for next summer's Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro."Hanging up my boots with the national team is my final decision. I've thought about this for a long time and when I make a decision, I stand by it.

"I made the decision to quit after the World Cup. The question of playing in the Olympics never came up. Someone talked about it and suddenly it became a hot topic."I know what it takes to qualify for such a competition and I don't want to take someone else's place. The Under-21 guys have worked towards this for years.

"It just wouldn't be right to come back. I had a brilliant time with the national team but it's over. The Olympics were no topic for me and they still aren't."

    Skrtel signs new Liverpool deal

Martin Skrtel has signed a new contract with Liverpool, the club have announced.

The Slovakian defender previously branded the Reds' offer of a new deal as "unacceptable", but his stance subsequently softened, and his agent revealed in June that his client was to pen a new contract.

Skrtel has now done so, committing his future to the club, with the deal reportedly set to run for three years.

The centre-back has become a key part of Brendan Rodgers' defence since moving to Merseyside and made 48 appearances in all competitions in 2014-15.

When speaking about Skrtel's contract extension, his representative revealed that Inter Milan had expressed an interest in acquiring his client, only for the 30-year-old to resist their overtures.
