Cech rescues a point for Arsenal... but Giroud can't make it three

    1827922_heroa.jpg

Arsene Wenger will watch several repeats of Arsenal's goalless draw with Liverpool over the next few days, but he will still struggle to make any sense of his side’s performance on Monday night.

On the one hand, the Gunners owe their goalkeeper Petr Cech for ensuring that Liverpool were not in the lead and out of sight by half-time after a woeful defensive display by the hosts in the first 45 minutes.

Against that, an offside flag denied Aaron Ramsey a legitimate goal that could have completely changed the game. A second-half surge on the Liverpool goal also included Alexis Sanchez striking against the post and Olivier Giroud missing a glorious chance from close range.

In many ways it was a performance that told the story of Arsenal’s summer.

They have signed a top quality goalkeeper in Cech; a proven winner and could be worth more than 10 points a season.

But at the other end they are missing the cutting edge to turn one point into three on nights like this. It could be the difference between finishing first and second at the end of the campaign.

Cech, 33, endured a nightmare Premier League debut in the 2-0 defeat to West Ham on the opening weekend, but he was at his very best here.

The former Chelsea man made two jaw-dropping saves that few goalkeepers in the world would be able to replicate.

First, he flung himself across his goalline to deny Christian Benteke from point-blank range as the Liverpool bench were already celebrating a near-certain opener.

Moments later, Cech was at full stretch again as he got the slightest of touches on Philippe Coutinho’s curler to divert the ball on to the post.
A clean sheet was the product of upgrading from a good selection of goalkeepers to one of the best around when Cech joined Arsenal for £10m in June.

It also bailed out a defence that Wenger admitted in his post-match press conference was “insecure” after the late withdrawal of first-choice centre-backs Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny due to injury.

Gabriel and Calum Chambers struggled to deal with Liverpool’s pace and movement in the first half, but to their credit looked far more organised after the restart as Arsenal took charge of the game.

But for the fifth time in their last six home matches, Arsenal could not find the back of the net. They have found it difficult to break down teams that defend deep and with men behind the ball.

The hosts did put the ball in the net in the first-half here but Aaron Ramsey’s strike was wrongly ruled out for offside.

Wenger admits that the start to Arsenal’s season has been “very average” and while he will in part curse some bad luck, he will put it more down to a lack of ruthlessness in the final third.

Alexis Sanchez struck the post from a tight angle after the break before the best chance fell to Olivier Giroud. Making his 100th Premier League appearance, the Frenchman stretched and stabbed the ball towards goal from eight yards, only to be denied by a fine save from Simon Mignolet.

Giroud has scored 42 league goals in his Arsenal career, an impressive return. This, though, was yet another game in which he confirmed his status as good but not great.

With Arsenal chasing a winning goal, he was replaced by Theo Walcott in the 73rd minute. Would Manchester City do the same with Sergio Aguero in the same situation?

On the day when Karim Benzema confirmed he will be staying at Real Madrid, Wenger now has eight days to sign a leading striker to fire Arsenal to their first title since 2004.

Arsenal are so close, but Wenger’s squad is not yet complete. He has the top quality goalkeeper he needs, but the Gunners still need a striker of that level at the other end of the pitch.

Rodgers: Liverpool deserved to beat Arsenal

    arsenal-v-liverpool-emirates-stadium-24-08-2015_1jv9qx6p6405k14ytkax7ek5pm.jpg

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers was left to rue missed opportunities after his side drew 0-0 with title rivals Arsenal on Monday night.

The Reds, who entered the match on the back of two consecutive wins in the Premier League, struck the woodwork twice in the first half as midfielder Philippe Coutinho went closest to breaking the deadlock.Christian Benteke also forced Petr Cech into an outstanding save from close range and Rodgers believes his team were the stronger of the two sides.

"We definitely could have had all three points," the Northern Irishman told the press."I was very happy with how we worked in the first-half in particular. We created chances and should have been in front.

"We had a period of 15 minutes when Petr made some fantastic saves. Christian was stretching and made as much contact with the ball as he could, but it was a great save."

Despite failing to take maximum points for the first time this campaign, Rodgers was pleased with his players' perfomance and believes his backline gave the team a solid foundation."It was very important that our defence was super organised. That will be the platform for us with all our creative talent.

"I thought we were outstanding right the way through. Our performance level is growing all the time. The defence was very organised against a top class team."

Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey saw his early goal ruled ruled out for offside by the officials - a decision which Rodgers described as "great".

And the former Swansea City boss also had special praise for stand-in midfielder Lucas following injuries to Jordan Henderson and Adam Lallana, with the Brazilian linked with a move away from Anfield in the coming days.

"We’ll see over the next week and assess," he added. "The boys who came in did very well."Lucas is the best defensive midfield player we have. When we do need that he’s the best we have.

He’s very much part of what we are trying to do but of course every player wants to play every game. He’s highly respected by myself and the coaching staff."

Wenger admits defeat in Benzema chase

    854432_heroa.jpg

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger says the Karim Benzema story is "dead" after the Real Madrid striker committed his future to the Spanish giants.

The Gunners had been willing to wait right up until the end of the transfer window to see if there was any chance of signing the France international, but he made it clear on Monday afternoon that he plans to stay at the Santiago Bernabeu.

And Wenger says players under contract are always extremely difficult to recruit: "That story is dead. That story has always been created every week. When a player has a contract it’s the club that decides.

"Real Madrid have said many times they don’t want to sell him. It’s the same for us when we have a player under contract."

Bartomeu: We want Man United target Neymar to retire at Barcelona

    neymar-barcelona_fox8bjr6pnx41x0v0rx6aumpt.jpg

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has dismissed reports linking Neymar with Manchester United, revealing that the Catalans want the Brazilian superstar to finish his career at Camp Nou.

There has been mounting speculation that United are considering lodging a record-breaking bid for Neymar before the close of the summer transfer window, with some newspapers also claiming that the 23-year-old is keen on a move to Old Trafford.

However, Bartomeu says that Barca have no intention of selling one of the key players in last season's treble triumph, explaining that they hope to soon tie the forward down to a new, long-term contract.

"We do not want Neymar to leave," the Blaugrana supremo told 'Club Mitjanit' on Radio Catalunya. "He is young and we want him to retire here at our club.

"We will discuss Neymar's renewal in some months' time as he must stay here - not only for the next three seasons, but for the next five or 10."

Neymar joined Barca from Santos in 2013 and initially struggled to reproduce his very best form during a first season in La Liga blighted by fitness problems and controversy surrounding his transfer.

However, the Brazil captain enjoyed a stellar 2014-15 campaign, netting 39 times in 51 matches in all competitions as the Blaugrana won the Spanish title, the Copa del Rey and the Champions League.

Neville: Wenger is either naive or arrogant

    arsene-wenger_lf987e2ogffn1xnixdrmq45gv.jpg

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has labelled Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger "either naive or arrogant".
Neville criticised Wenger's failure to sign a replacement for former captain Patrick Vieira and believes the Gunners cannot win the Premier League title with their current crop of midfielders.

Speaking on Sky Sports ahead of the 0-0 draw with Liverpool on Monday night, Neville questioned the Frenchman's transfer policy as Santi Cazorla and Francis Coquelin began the match in the heart of midfield.

After highlighting the ability at Arsenal's disposal, the England assistant manager criticised Wenger’s use of midfielders, insisting the current crop would not land the Gunners their first league title since 2004.

“I think they are good players, Cazorla is fantastic to watch. But I'm talking about Arsenal winning the league,” Neville explained.

“Think about Fabregas or a Paul Scholes when we were playing, fantastic player. You've got to build people around him. Facilitate what maybe they can't do.

“To me it's arrogance. I think it's arrogance. I really do. To think that you are not going to adapt your team, to change to impact on the other teams that you're playing against and their strengths.

"It is either naive, or arrogance. Because they keep losing this way. Belief? It is misheld belief.

"We've talked about the likes of Vieira, Petit, Gilberto [Silva], [Martin] Keown, [Sol] Campbell, [Tony] Adams, all strong people," Neville continued.

"[It's] certainly not what I would call what you want to win you a league.

"The powerful characters, the strength you need running through your team whether it's a Blackburn team or a Manchester City team with Yaya Toure and Vincent Kompany.

“The profile of players completely changed and the style has changed.”

The Arsenal boss responded to the scathing criticism following the goalless draw at the Emirates by disputing his transfer decisions had anything to do with pride and highlighted his several years experience in the sport.

“I don’t know what that has to do with arrogance. I try to do well in my job, that’s all I try to do. It’s up to other people to judge me," Wenger firmly said.

“Everybody has his opinion and is entitled to have an opinion. I could prove it’s not right but let’s not go into that debate tonight.

“I think I have enough experience and intelligence to know when it’s right or wrong."

Wenger baffled by Ramsey's disallowed goal

    arsene-wenger-arsenal_m2crexir8p6f1n7baj0k3ag1g.jpg

Arsene Wenger said it was "difficult to understand" why Aaron Ramsey's goal was ruled out for offside in Arsenal's goalless Premier League draw with Liverpool.

Brendan Rodgers' side dominated the first-half at the Emirates Stadium on Monday night but should have fallen behind when Ramsey found the back of the net after 10 minutes only to see the linesman's flag raised.

Replays showed the Wales midfielder was clearly onside and Wenger was not impressed with the decision after watching his side fail to win for a second home game in the top flight following their 2-0 defeat to West Ham on the opening weekend.

"We made chances in both halves and were unlucky because we scored a goal that was cancelled, which was difficult to understand," the Arsenal manager told the media.

Liverpool's Philippe Coutinho went closest to breaking the deadlock when he hit the crossbar after only two minutes before Petr Cech pulled off a fingertip save to tip the Brazilian's curling effort onto the post.

Cech produced another outstanding stop to somehow deny Christian Benteke from close range and Wenger was pleased to see the former Chelsea goalkeeper show his class after a poor showing on the opening day.

"He did a good job as he kept us in the game in important moments, that's what you expect from him. He had a good game," the Frenchman said.Wenger was again left to rue his side's lack of a cutting edge, though, as they failed to find the back of the net at home.

He added: "We struggled to score goals in the second game at home. We need to play better in our opponent's final third."

Cech pleased to make amends with first clean sheet

    petrcech-cropped_61cwfephzocz158bw4mp7276w.jpg

Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech revelled in a strong performance as he helped the north Londoners take a point from their home match with Liverpool after a 0-0 result.

The 33-year-old shot-stopper redeemed himself in front of his home supporters following a disappointing Emirates Stadium debut on the opening weekend, making a some quality saves to thwart Philippe Coutinho and Christian Benteke in the first half.

Cech, who was at fault for both goals in the 2-0 loss to West Ham two weeks ago, says he has worked hard on the training ground after his poor first showing and was surprised to see clean sheets at both ends of the pitch against Liverpool.
"The first game it was the opposite of this," he told Sky Sports."When you start at new club you want to start well and that didn't happen against West Ham.

"I went back to work after the West ham game and needed to get ready. Today I was always in the right place. "It was hard to believe there were no goals after all the chances."

Arsenal have now failed to score in their opening two league matches at home for the first time since 1979 after Aaron Ramsey's first-half strike was controversially ruled out for offside.

However, despite falling five points behind rivals Manchester City, Cech maintains his new club can still mount a significant tilt at the title."I still believe we have players with a lot of quality and young players with quality, I believe we have the potential to do well," he added.

"There are 35 more games to be played and plenty of points to win. We can put together a run and only time will tell what will happen."

Pedro has changed the dynamics at Chelsea - Azpilicueta

    pedro-premier-league-west-brom-v-chelsea-230815_1bc2wy5pcut1u1aetlnp2sfl3d.jpg

New signing Pedro has "changed the dynamics" at Chelsea, says compatriot Cesar Azpilicueta, who has also called upon the Premier League champions to improve their form after a difficult start to the 2015-16 season.

The former Barcelona forward starred on his Blues debut with a goal in Sunday's 3-2 win at West Brom to help Jose Mourinho's side to record their first win of the campaign.

Chelsea have four points from a possible nine this term after conceding seven goals and collecting two red cards already but Azpilicueta - who also scored his first league goal in England at the Hawthorns - is confident that his side will be fighting for the title with Pedro.

"It is clear that [Pedro] personally wanted to start a new adventure, another experience," Azpilicueta told Cadena SER. "Pedro decided to come to a team from a different country and is very happy with a move to Chelsea.

"In a team like Chelsea, [to] get a point from a possible six, no-one is happy. We wanted to change the dynamics. Against West Brom we got three very important points that will give us confidence going to face the next matches and to rectify this bad start."

Azpilicueta – who initially joined Chelsea as a right-back – faces competition in his current left-back slot from new signing Baba Rahman but is working hard to retain his first-team role.

"From the beginning, Mourinho has shown me his trust and I tried to return it in every practice and every game," he added. "At the end of the day, all we fight for is to win titles."

Muller is priceless for Bayern - Lahm

    douglas-costa-fc-bayern-munchen-hamburger-sv-bundesliga-14082015_1bvz0hhj1eb1x1pkkb1xzcs1w9.jpg

Philipp Lahm says Thomas Muller is priceless for Bayern Munich amid ongoing speculation linking him with a move to Manchester United .

Reports in Germany over the weekend claimed United had tabled an €85 million bid for the Germany international as they look to secure a marquee signing before the end of the transfer window.

Lahm, however, has underlined Muller's importance to Bayern and does not believe the 25-year-old will be moved on.

"Thomas is one of those role models who you can't attach a price-tag to. He lives for Bayern, he is a very, very important player for us," Lahm told Munchner Mekur.

Bayern have already allowed Bastian Schweinsteiger to move to Old Trafford this summer, prompting further accusations that Pep Guardiola is changing the club's core idendity, following the departure of Toni Kroos in 2014 and the signing of Brazilian Douglas Costa.

"There shouldn't be a concern about Bayern's identity," Lahm stressed. "Look at the team: Thomas Muller, Holger Badstuber, David Alaba, me - all from the youth team.

"We have Manuel Neuer, Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery, who have been here so long that their hearts practically beat red."

Lahm was also keen to stress that Bayern's Bundesliga title defence will not be easy this term, despite them walking to the championship in each of the last two years.

"I've always said there are four or five teams who can compete for the title. Dortmund are one of them. This is not, in my view, just a Bayern hunt," he said.

Finally, the 2014 World Cup winner - who retired from international football after Germany's success in Brazil - has reiterated that he will not return to Joachim Low's set-up, although he did back an uncapped Bayern team-mate as an alternative.

"Anyone who knows me knows that I stick with my decisions. I don't regret it, it was well thought through. I had a wonderful time, but there's no way back for me," explained the 31-year-old.

"Rafinha is a great guy, he has huge class, he's been playing at the highest level - why shouldn't he be an option for Low?"

Kompany: City benefiting from competition for places

    vincent-kompany-joe-hart-manchester-city-16082015_3jyufg0xcaij1191rmyoclxq7.jpg

Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany believes the Premier League leaders are reaping the rewards for their tremendous strength in depth.

City have been near faultless as they top the table by two points with a 100 percent record after three matches, and are yet to concede a goal.

Manuel Pellegrini's star-studded squad are the only team with nine points from three rounds and Kompany thinks the increased competition for places, following the big-money arrivals of Nicolas Otamendi and Raheem Sterling, has contributed to City's stellar start to the campaign.

"You can't really afford to do anything wrong during the week leading up to the game," said Kompany, who has scored two goals in three appearances this season.

"Then, during the game, you can't do anything wrong either as there is always someone looking over your shoulder, waiting, who is just as good as you.

"If they are in a better moment and they deserve a chance, they will take your place.

"You have got to be at the top of your game. This is what you are seeing, a group of guys who know that they need to perform. If they don't, someone else will do it.

"It is so important in any top team to have quality players all over. The extra competition is good, really good. You don't play for a top team unless you have that.

"If you look at the schedule, you could end up with 50 to 60 games and that is impossible for one team. If you want to go for every trophy, we have got [Jason] Denayer, [Martin] Demichelis, Otamendi, [Eliaquim] Mangala and myself [in central defence]. You need that to go for it."

Wenger hits back at Neville 'arrogant' jibe

    arsene-wenger_lf987e2ogffn1xnixdrmq45gv.jpg

Arsene Wenger has questioned Gary Neville's assertion that his transfer policy in the aftermath of Arsenal's last Premier League title can either be described as "naive or arrogant."

Wenger is currently the Premier League's longest-serving manager after arriving at Arsenal in 1996 and has won the title three times, though the Gunners' last success came back in 2004.

Speaking ahead of Arsenal's 0-0 draw with Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium on Monday, Sky Sports pundit Neville was scathing in his assessment of the profile of players Wenger signed between 2004 and 2009.

"I can't think of a word to describe that bunch - I could but it wouldn’t be usable on television," said the former Manchester United defender.

"They're certainly not what I would call what you want to win you a league, the powerful characters, the strength you need running through your team.

"I just cannot get my head around why he would not sign players of power to assist these talented players you’ve got to enable them to win the league.

"It is the one big, if you like, black mark against Arsene Wenger in these last 10 years... to me it's arrogance - to think that you are not going to adapt your team to impact on the other teams you’re playing against. It is either naivety or arrogance because they keep losing this way."

Neville's words were put to Wenger in the aftermath of Monday's game, with the Frenchman insisting he could prove the England coach wrong.

"Look, I don't know what that has to do with arrogance," he said.

"I try just to do my job well for 20 years. I leave judgment to everybody else, the assessment of the quality of my work.

"Everybody is entitled to that opinion. I could prove to you that it's not necessarily right but let's not go into that debate tonight.

"When you don't win, you're wrong and people find reasons. Are they good reasons? I have enough experience to know when it's right and when it's wrong."

Mario Balotelli has arrived for a medical with AC Milan as the Liverpool misfit edges closer to the Anfield exit door.

Milan launched an initial bid on Sunday to bring the former Inter man back to San Siro on a season-long loan deal.

And the Serie A giants have now confirmed that the striker has arrived in Italy to complete the formalities of his switch.

A short statement on Milan's official website read: "At 8.26 this morning, Mario Balotelli has reached the La Madonnina clinic for medical examinations provided for today."

Balotelli - who scored just one Premier League goal last season - left Milan for Liverpool in a deal worth £16 million last August.

The Italy international has already been warned by Milan CEO Adriano Galliani that he is being given a final chance to prove his worth.

"Balotelli convinced us to get him back," he said. "He is aware that we are giving him his very last chance."

Arsenal stars praise Gabriel and Chambers for Liverpool clean sheet

Arsenal duo Hector Bellerin and Petr Cech have praised teammates Gabriel and Calum Chambers after the duo were "thrown into" central defence for Monday night's 0-0 draw against Liverpool.

Gabriel, 24, and Chambers, 20, made their first appearances of the season in Monday's stalemate at the Emirates Stadium, pairing up in central defence for the first time.

Regular centre-backs Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny were unavailable due to illness and a back injury respectively, but Gabriel and Chambers held firm to secure a point for Arsene Wenger's side.

"I think they had a good game, the fact that we are going home with a clean sheet says a lot," Bellerin told Arsenal's official website.

"It is difficult to be thrown into a game like this when you haven't had a lot of game time."

Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech came to the rescue of his team with a couple of stunning saves in the first half, but the former Chelsea man was still impressed by the duo directly ahead of him.

"You need to believe that the players you have in the team they are for a reason and today Gabriel and Calum, they jumped in, they obviously did their best to help us win the game," he said.

"Today shows you need to have a squad full of players capable of playing anytime and today it proved that we are lucky to have four ready defenders."
