Swansea City 3-0 York City: Monk's men march on

    nathandyercropped_13o8mmxbi6ppk14p7g7vp5dsv6.jpg

Premier League quality told as Swansea City beat York City 3-0 in the second round of the League Cup on Tuesday.

Despite making 11 changes from Saturday's 1-1 draw at Sunderland, Garry Monk's side proved too strong for their League Two visitors, opening the scoring after just two minutes.

Nathan Dyer's early breakthrough for the 2013 League Cup winners was added to by second-half goals from Matt Grimes and substitute Marvin Emnes as the hosts booked a spot in round three.

Swansea's much-changed line-up still included five of the players that featured in the Wembley triumph over Bradford City - who York beat in the first round this season - two years ago.

Dyer was one of those, having netted twice at the national stadium, and he opened the scoring from close range after Eder's effort was saved by Scott Flinders.

He tried to return the favour three minutes later, picking out Eder with a low cross, but the Portugal forward could not force the ball home.

Flinders was called into action again soon after to keep out Wayne Routledge's effort, but it was not all one-way traffic, with James Berrett striking the crossbar for York.

The underdogs spurned a good chance to level early in the second half as Vadaine Oliver narrowly cleared the crossbar from inside the box.

Grimes made them pay for that miss when he opened his account for the club with a deflected 64th-minute strike.

Swansea enjoyed prolonged spells of possession for the remainder of the match, seeking to stave off any threat of a comeback.

York, who were unbeaten against the Welsh club in their previous six meetings, introduced youngsters Callum Rzonca and Ben Godfrey for the final 20 minutes, but could not find a way back.

And their defeat was confirmed when Emnes, on for Grimes, drilled an effort past Flinders.

Rotherham United 1-2 Norwich City: Van Wolfswinkel ends goal drought

    rickyvanwolfswinkel-cropped_15phq1vvcv2vy1gvukflygy10z.jpg

Ricky van Wolfswinkel scored only his second Norwich City goal as they progressed to the third round of the League Cup with a 2-1 win at Rotherham United.

The Premier League side were given a stern test by their Championship opponents and owed much to the performance of goalkeeper Declan Rudd.

But Alex's Neil men were more clinical in front of goal and did enough to continue a decent start to the new season that has seen them take four points from their first three games back in the top flight.

Norwich took the lead at New York Stadium thanks a 22nd-minute strike from Jonny Howson.

Rotherham had the better of the chances as they searched for an equaliser, but Van Wolfswinkel - who spent last season on loan at Saint-Etienne - gave Norwich breathing room with his first goal since August 2013.

Substitute Paul Green pulled one back late on but, despite late pressure from Steve Evans' team, Norwich held on to progress.

Rotherham suffered a blow in the 16th minute as midfielder Lee Frecklington was forced off with a knock and replaced by Chris Maguire.

The second-tier club held their own for a further six minutes before they were caught by a quick counter finished off by Howson.

Howson fired into the bottom-left corner after Rudd had flung to his right to keep out a Jonson Clarke-Harris header.

Van Wolfswinkel looked to have made it 2-0 in the 36th minute as he turned home from Bradley Johnson's header, only to be denied by the offside flag.

Rotherham kept up the pressure and Neil's side were grateful to Rudd again, the goalkeeper turning behind Joe Newell's close-range effort eight minutes into the second half.

Emmanuel Ledesma spurned a great opportunity for the hosts to level in the 59th minute and nine minutes later Van Wolfswinkel made Rotherham pay.

The Dutchman swept met a well-placed Andre Wisdom cross from the right at the near post and made no mistake in sweeping home to give the visitors breathing room.

Rotherham forward Matt Derbyshire blasted over the crossbar with the goal at his mercy after getting to a backpass ahead of Rudd, who then produced a superb save to keep out a curling effort from the former Olympiakos man.

Green fired home on the volley to give Rotherham hope, but a frustrating night in front of goal ended fittingly as their attempts at a comeback fell short.

Luton Town 1-1 Stoke City (7-8 pens): Cameron nets winning penalty to send Potters through

    1831382_heroa.jpg

Stoke City survived a huge scare in squeezing past Luton Town 8-7 on penalties to reach round three of the League Cup on Tuesday.

Mark Hughes' men dominated possession at Kenilworth Road, but lacked quality in the final third and were forced into extra time when Cameron McGeehan cancelled out Jonathan Walters' opener to make it 1-1 in the 91st minute.

Stoke eventually progressed against a side that sits 22nd in League Two as Scott Griffiths became the only player out of 16 to miss from 12 yards, following a goalless additional period, giving Geoff Cameron the opportunity to put his team through.

The main positive for Stoke came through Bojan's return to competitive action, the Spaniard completing 87 minutes seven months on from suffering a serious knee injury in an FA Cup tie against Rochdale.

Walters, whose future remains uncertain amid interest from Norwich City, latched on to a delicate pass from Stephen Ireland and cleverly lobbed Luton goalkeeper Elliot Justham to put Stoke in front midway through the second half.

However, having been starved of possession for much of the match, Luton finished strongly and levelled through lively substitute McGeehan before holding their own in extra time.

A much-changed Stoke made an assured start, but Luton gradually gained a foothold in the game and an ambitious long-range effort from Griffiths was tipped over by Shay Given - making his first competitive start for the Potters.

Home appeals for a penalty were turned down as Danny Green surged into the box and tumbled under a challenge from Marko Arnautovic.

Stoke were soon back on the front foot, a low drive from Walters bringing a routine save from Justham before promising work from Bojan ended with the playmaker dragging a tame shot off target. Yet there was not too much to concern Luton as the underdogs reached the interval on level terms.

Peter Crouch sent an acrobatic volley wide from a Bojan cross amid greater intensity from Stoke at the beginning of the second half and came closer still when his header from a deep cross forced Justham to react sharply at his near post.

Yet after the former England international had been replaced by Joselu, it was Walters who finally broke the deadlock in the 67th minute - clipping the ball over Justham with the outside of his right boot.

Stoke looked to have done enough after coming through a late spell of home pressure that saw McGeehan and fellow substitute Ryan Hall denied by Given.

McGeehan was not finished, though, and the 20-year-old had the simple task of applying a close-range finish in stoppage time when Griffiths delivered a superb cross from the left.

The two goalscorers threatened again in the first half of extra time, Walters testing Justham once more before McGeehan fired into the side netting.

But a penalty shootout was required to separate the teams and Griffiths was the only man to miss as he struck the crossbar after 14 successful conversions.

Aston Villa 5-3 Notts County (aet): Sinclair stars in eight-goal thriller

    scottsinclair-cropped_1ahrdgha4rr2x17il8ne86p2cf.jpg

Scott Sinclair scored a hat-trick as Aston Villa came from behind three times to claim a thrilling 5-3 victory over Notts County in the League Cup second round on Tuesday.

A stunning finish from former Villa youngster Graham Burke appeared to send League Two side County on their way to an upset, but Sinclair netted a controversial penalty and then found the winner in the first half of extra time with a simple close-range strike.

An excellent long-range effort from Genaro Snijders earlier saw County take the lead in the opening stages before Adama Traore, who later came off with an injury, levelled matters on his first start since joining from Barcelona.

Jon Stead's penalty in first-half injury time meant Ricardo Moniz's men went into the interval with a slender advantage before Sinclair tied things up in the 50th minute with his first.

Burke unleashed an unstoppable curling effort that flew in off the post, only for Sinclair to force extra time from 12 yards.

The winger then turned home Joe Cole's cut-back in the 99th minute, with Joe Bennett's first goal for Villa from 20 yards making sure of progression as a valiant County effort ended in heartbreak.

Tim Sherwood made nine changes to the Villa side that lost 2-1 to Crystal Palace in the Premier League at the weekend and they fell behind after 16 minutes as Snijders let fly with a fierce effort that took a slight deflection, leaving goalkeeper Mark Bunn with no chance.

Izale McLeod fired wide from the edge of the area for the visitors, who were punished for their profligacy as Traore coolly slotted the ball past Roy Carroll following great work from Jack Grealish.

Jordan Ayew, Traore and Sinclair all went close to completing the turnaround, but, on the stroke of half-time, County regained the lead when Stead powered his spot-kick into the top-left corner after McLeod had been fouled by Bunn.

Shortly after the restart the instrumental Grealish helped tie things up again as he worked his way down the left and pulled the ball back for Sinclair to tap into an empty net, only for Burke to stun the Villa Park crowd with his moment of magic.

Nathan Baker went close for Villa as his 64th-minute header was cleared off the line, but the hosts found a leveller 12 minutes from the end of normal time as Sinclair lashed into the bottom-left corner from the spot after Stanley Aborah was dubiously ruled to have fouled Kieran Richardson.

Carroll twice stopped Sinclair from completing his treble in normal time, but the former Manchester City man was not to be denied again as he was presented with the easy task of converting from Cole's excellent right-wing cross before Bennett made sure of a happy end to a nervy night for Villa.

Sunderland 6-3 Exeter City: Defoe treble sees Black Cats through

    dick-advocaat-sunderland_279mfulhtg9216ax0ihs9hitu.jpg

Sunderland 's defensive frailties threatened to herald a League Cup shock before the Premier League side ran out 6-3 winners over Exeter City on Tuesday evening.

Jermain Defoe netted a hat-trick and Jack Rodwell bagged a brace for the hosts at the Stadium of Light - both players scoring inside the first 16 minutes before Manny Oyeleke and David Wheeler hauled the League Two outfit level.

A brilliant second from Defoe was answered by Tom McCready as a remarkable half ended with the score 3-3 .

Rodwell was on hand to head the crucial seventh goal of the contest, before Duncan Watmore marked his England Under-21 call-up by getting on the scoresheet and Defoe claimed the matchball.

It meant a first win of the season for Sunderland, although manager Dick Advocaat - who named a strong side for the tie - has now seen his team concede 11 goals in four matches.

Rodwell drew first blood in the 12th minute, converting after Danny Graham's shot from Patrick van Aanholt’s cutback was blocked.

The hosts doubled their advantage soon afterwards as Defoe lifted the ball over Exeter goalkeeper Bobby Olejnik before crashing a finish beyond defenders rushing back to the goalline.

Thoughts of a potential rout were soon forgotten as Sunderland failed to deal with Danny Butterfield's lofted ball forward and Oyeleke got the better of Sebastian Coates to net from six yards.

Exeter were level in the 31st minute when Wheeler was given space to head home Lee Holmes' left-wing cross at the far post but Defoe restored Sunderland's lead - producing a sublime first touch and engineering space to dispatch a shot beyond Olejnik.

That advantage also proved flimsy, with Holmes once more afforded ample room in the role of provider - McCready the man to send the 495 Exeter fans who braved a six-hour journey into raptures.

Holmes missed a headed chance to put Exeter in front after the break and Rodwell made the visitors pay by converting Sebastian Larsson's 63rd-minute corner.

There was a moment to forget 12 minutes from time for Olejnik as Watmore beat him to the ball and made the most of an open goal.

Rodwell sent a curling effort wide but it would be Defoe who completed his treble, sweeping home another fine Larsson delivery in the 87th minute as Exeter’s brave challenge faded.

Crystal Palace 4-1 Shrewsbury Town (aet): Pardew's men forced to go the distance

    dwightgaylecropped_r4i86cazgc391nv8p3pe1knhd.jpg

Crystal Palace overcame a scare as they were forced to come from behind to beat Shrewsbury Town 4-1 after extra time and reach the third round of the League Cup.

Alan Pardew made nine changes to the side that beat Aston Villa in the Premier League on Saturday in order to "keep the squad alive".

That decision could have backfired as Matt Tootle's first goal for Shrewsbury since his move from Crewe Alexandra in June gave the League One side a shock early lead at Selhurst Park on Tuesday.

Dwight Gayle, one of the fringe players given his chance to impress, equalised from the penalty spot after Abu Ogogo upended Wilfried Zaha and also hit the crossbar just before the end of the 90 minutes as Palace were taken the distance.

Substitute Glenn Murray put Palace in front from 12 yards after he had been brought down by Mat Sadler, and Lee Chung-yong and Zaha then got in on the act as Palace eventually secured their progress.

Patrick Bamford made his first Palace start as only Joel Ward and Zaha retained their places following the 2-1 victory over Villa on Saturday.

Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro was one of three players recalled to the Shrewsbury starting line-up and the forward had a hand in an opening goal which stunned Palace after just nine minutes.

The Premier League side were caught out when Ryan Woods picked out Akpa Akpro, who in turn found Tootle and the right-back fired low into the far corner of the net.

Palace responded and the dangerous Zaha drove into the area, but was stopped in his tracks by some fine defending from Ogogo.

Ogogo had a moment to forget four minutes before the break, though, as he upended Zaha in the box and was punished when Gayle slotted home from the spot.

Bamford spurned a chance to open his Palace account when he fired over the crossbar after the lively Zaha had caused yet more problems for the Shrewsbury defence.

It was all one-way traffic as Zaha embarked on a brilliant late run before shooting wide and Shrewsbury goalkeeper Jayson Leutwiler kept out free-kicks from Lee and Gayle.

Gayle then struck crossbar from outside the penalty area with time running out but Pardew's side made their superiority count in extra time.

Substitute Murray finished from the spot after Sadler had upended him in five minutes into extra time, then Lee cut inside his man and tucked home with his right foot two minutes later to give Palace a two-goal cushion.

Zaha then rose to head home Pape Souare's cross from the left four minutes from time, thus completing the scoring.

    Nuno: Valencia must replace Otamendi

    nuno-santo_1x59433u7xcbq1jhuoswlm016e.jpg

Valencia boss Nuno called for reinforcements after watching his side reach the Champions League group stage on Tuesday, making a replacement for Nicolas Otamendi the absolute priority.

Los Che were beaten 2-1 in the second leg of their play-off round tie with Monaco at the Stade Louis II, but progressed 4-3 on aggregate thanks to last week's 3-1 victory at Mestalla.

Nuno was thrilled with the spirit shown by his troops in the principality but he says that Valencia must now strengthen their squad before the close of the transfer market, particularly after losing star centre-half Nicolas Otamendi to Manchester City.

"We need to make some decisions after this game," the coach told Antena 3. "We have to talk and take a look at the market.

"There are many details to analyse but after Otamendi's departure we need someone to replace him - and it will not be easy."

Nuno surprisingly decided to start with Alvaro Negredo up front against Monaco, leaving Paco Alcacer on the bench, but his selection was almost immediately vindicated, with the former City striker netting with a sublime chipped effort after just four minutes of play.

Monaco came storming back, equalising through Andrea Raggi before Elderson set up a frantic finale with his 75th-minute strike, but Valencia held on to seal their place in Thursday's draw for the group stage.

"Everything you get in this life is through suffering and we suffered tonight," he conceded. "But we remained united.

"We were great in the first half, we managed the game well, thanks in no small part to an awesome goal.

"Negredo did great today. I played him as we needed experience and these kind of players know how to handle these situations.

"But the second half was tougher for us, as we did not get a handle on the game.

"We now face an even greater challenge [in the group stage] but we have many great players in the squad and need to use them depending on the game and what we want out of it."

:rofl:Van Gaal: Man Utd are better WITHOUT the ball

    1832132_heroa.jpg

Louis van Gaal believes Manchester United have been at their best at the start of the 2015-16 campaign when they've been without the ball.

United are unbeaten in their opening four games of the new season although scoring goals has proved problematic, with Van Gaal's side only managing two in the Premier League thus far.

Wayne Rooney's form has been called into question, with the England captain having failed to score for United since April, and Van Gaal believes it is his defensive players who deserve the most credit.

When asked what has pleased him most about his team this season, the Dutchman told reporters: "Until now, of course, our defensive organisation.

"I divide football in to four main moments and we have two moments where the opponent has the ball and then we are at our best, I think.

"We proved that last year and now we are continuing with a lot of clean sheets so that is very important. But we have to improve when we have the ball.

"We have been a little bit unlucky. Liverpool and Arsenal was 0-0 on Monday but you can't say they didn't create anything."

Asked about Wednesday's crunch Champions League meeting with Club Brugge, Van Gaal added: "Yes, [this is United's most important match]. It's been our aim for more than a year to be in the Champions League and still we are not yet participating.

"It's very important. We have to play the game and finish with more goals than our opponents. Then we will be in it."

Basel bow out of Champions League but Shakhtar sneak through

    slavisa-jokanovic-maccabi-tel-aviv_o075xyiygtrm19img1oyha939.jpg

Maccabi Tel Aviv upset Basel to reach the group stage of the Champions League for the first time in 11 years.

The Israelis claimed a fine 2-2 draw at St Jakob Park last week but fell behind early in the second leg on home soil, with Luca Zuffi netting just 11 minutes in.

However, Maccabi captain Eran Zahavi stepped up to the mark by levelling matters midway through the first half and the hosts survived a second-half onslaught from their Swiss opponents, who reached the last 16 at Liverpool's expense last season, to progress on the away-goals rule.

Shakhtar Donetsk, meanwhile, record a 3-2 aggregate victory over Rapid Vienna - but only after being given an almighty scare in Lviv.

The Ukrainians doubled their first-leg advantage when Marlos opened the scoring with just 10 minutes on the clock but the Austrian visitors turned the game - and indeed the tie - on its head by replying with goals from Louis Schaub and Steffen Hofmann by the midway point of the opening half.

However, Shakhtar were only behind for five minutes thanks to Olexandr Gladkiy and Mircera Lucescu's ultimately sneaked into Thursday's draw, with their cause having been aided slightly by the late dismissal of Rapid's Mario Sonnleitner.

Elsewhere Dinamo Zagreb, who had Goncalo Santos sent off, ended Skenderbeu Korce's hopes of reaching the group stage for the first time with a 4-1 win in Croatia to go through 6-2 on aggregate. El Arabi Hilal Soudani netted twice for the home side.

Parejo: Valencia deserve to be back in the Champions League

    dani-parejo-valencia-deportivo-la-liga-13032015_1phg6dn29vsin1j8ljpp63q6n9.jpg

Valencia captain Dani Parejo was almost lost for words after leading the club back into the group stage of the Champions League.

Los Che were beaten 2-1 in the second leg of their play-off round tie with Monaco at the Stade Louis II but went through 4-3 on aggregate thanks to last week's 3-1 success at Mestalla.

Parejo, who has been at Valencia since 2011, was understandably overcome with emotion after putting the club back where he feels they belong.

"This is Champions League and we faced a very big team. It was a tough game and a hard knockout match - but we finally made it," the midfielder told Antena 3. "We are now where we deserve to be!

"It is amazing that so many fans come here to support us. There are no words to describe what we feel but the victory is for all of them. They helped us a lot."

Parejo also heaped praise on Alvaro Negredo, who was surprisingly selected to lead the Valencia attack and, after just four minutes of play, responded with the game's opening goal.

Monaco hit back through Andrea Raggi and Elderson but Nuno's men held on, much to the Che skipper's relief.

"It was important to Negredo to be with us tonight," Parejo said of the former Manchester City striker.

"I saw him training this week and he was really hungry. I told him if he wanted, he could get us into the Champions League!"

As for Negredo, he revealed that he was only informed a matter of hours before kick-off that he had again been selected ahead of Paco Alcacer - despite failing to find the back of the net in Saturday's scoreless draw at the home of Liga rivals Rayo Vallecano.

"Coach Nuno told me that I was a starter today [Tuesday]," he stated. "So, I just tried my best to repay him.

"We did well last Saturday but I was not rewarded with a goal. I was today.

"It was important to score away and we did it very early. Then they put us under great pressure but we managed to resist.

"It was our goal to get the qualification and we made it despite the defeat.

"I was lucky to visit many great stadiums with Man City. We will now try to enjoy every place we visit in this season's Champions League."

Meanwhile, Javi Fuego could barely contain his excitement at the prospect of playing in the Champions League proper for the first time in his career.

"We knew it would be a very complicated knockout and knew they would put huge pressure on us after the first leg," he added.

"It seemed we would have it easier after Negredo's goal, but they levelled the game and then went ahead.

"But we managed to get through and this is now the icing on the cake after last season's success.

"We remember the team-mates that are not with us today. And of course all the supporters that made a long bus journey to be with us.

"Now I finally will be able to enjoy the Champions League at the age of 31!"

Advocaat unhappy despite League Cup win

    dickadvocaat-cropped_1byk8xtzee1t91b67trvbudjcc.jpg

Sunderland manager Dick Advocaat was unhappy with his side's performance in their League Cup second round clash with Exeter City, despite their 6-3 win on Tuesday.

Jermain Defoe scored a hat-trick at the Stadium of Light while Jack Rodwell netted a brace as Advocaat's men were given a stern test by the League Two side.

And despite their win Advocaat expressed his displeasure at his side's defensive display.

"It was not our best game, but we scored six goals," Advocaat told the club's official website.

"We gave very easy goals away for this level so I cannot be, with all respect I'm happy with 6-3, happy with the performance."

Advocaat did, however, laud Defoe, who struck in the 16th, 39th and 87th minutes to lead his side to their win, though he claimed that the former Tottenham striker could have scored twice more.

"Jermain could have had five goals and when he is in front of goal you can see he is a goalscorer," Advocaat added.

Thiago: Sleep was my only escape from injury agony

    thiago-alcantara-fc-bayern-muenchen-12052015_s5ut1pg3awfizriyiswopi5w.jpg

Bayern Munich ace Thiago Alacantara says that his life is now "back to normal" after a year which sleep was the only escape from his injury agony.

The Spain international suffered knee ligament damage in training last October, forcing him to undergo surgery for the second time in the space of seven months.

However, Thiago made his return to competitive action in Bayern's Bundesliga opener against Hamburg on August 14 and is now looking forward to kick-starting a career that has thus far been repeatedly interrupted by injuries.

"I have achieved the goal I had for a year," the midfielder wrote on his Facebook page. "My life is back to normal.

"I'm happy; this was the challenge I had to meet. Now I'm starting again from zero."

"Sleep was the only thing that comforted me. I spent all day with my hand on my knee.

"Even going to bed bothered me because the simple act of moving the sheets reminded me of the knee.

"Only when I started to sleep was I at peace."

Thiago also heaped praise on Dr. Ramon Cugat, who performed the operation on his knee.

"He's not just the best orthopaedic surgeon in the world but also the best psychologist," the former Barcelona man added.

"He spent hours with me - even on a Sunday - to see not only how my knee was, but also my head.

"He did a fantastic job. He believed in my recovery at all times."
