Van Gaal in the dark over De Gea future

    degea-cropped_1w1v8corkgqha1v87e3mpome12.jpg

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal concedes he does not know whether goalkeeper David de Gea will leave the club before the end of the transfer window.

De Gea has been heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid for months and, with the Spanish window set to close on Monday, time is running out to complete a deal.

The Spain international has not featured for United this season, with new signing Sergio Romero starting all of United's games thus far in 2015-16.

De Gea was again left out of the matchday squad for Sunday's loss to Swansea City, and Van Gaal admits he does not know if the club will retain the Spaniard's services.

Asked whether De Gea would stay, Van Gaal said: "I don't know.

"You can ask of all the players but you will have to wait and see until Manchester United make an announcement or the club where he is going to make an announcement.

"I don't want to interfere. As a manager, we have divided our tasks and the task is for Ed Woodward, not me.

"I don't want to interfere with words or nothing. I haven't said anything about a transfer, I've only said it is a process, we have to wait and see.

"The club shall announce it when it is finished and so on."

Javier Hernandez could also be on his way out of Old Trafford but Van Gaal would not be drawn on whether the Mexican has been told he can leave.

"I don't say anything about conversations I have with the players because I think that is between the player and the manager," he added.

Monk: Swansea are a Premier League force

    garrymonk-cropped_1baaxlftcqlvd1t30w02k2uukj.jpg

Garry Monk believes Swansea City are a "force" in the Premier League, after they came from behind to beat Manchester United 2-1 at the Liberty Stadium on Sunday.

Juan Mata put the visitors in front in Wales, but the home side swiftly hit back, with goals from Andre Ayew and Bafetimbi Gomis giving the Swans all three points.

The win continues Swansea's unbeaten start to the season, as well as Monk's 100 per cent record against opposite number Louis van Gaal, and the 36-year-old believes his players proved their worth against United.

"We enjoyed that," Monk told Sky Sports. "In the first 20 minutes United started really well... we found it difficult to get any rhythm in the game.

"But second half we were magnificent. We got some excellent goals. We had the best chances in the game.

"The players were so brave today and we were clinical when we needed to be.

"We went to a diamond in the second half and that helped us. We felt they were overloading us a little bit in the middle.

"I think that helped us because we ended up getting two quick-fire goals.

"We're a good team and we are a force in this league. When we're playing our best we can be unbelievable."

Sevilla 0-3 Atletico Madrid: Jackson off the mark in La Liga as Llorente's return ends in defeat

    1853512_heroa.jpg

Goals in either half from Koke and Gabi and a first Liga strike for Jackson Martinez ensured Atletico Madrid left Sevilla with an impressive 3-0 win on Sunday.

Sevilla lost just once at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan last season, but they failed to replicate that form in their first home match of 2015-16 as Koke had Atletico ahead at the break after Unai Emery's side wasted a host of chances.

The hosts also controlled proceedings after half-time, but debutant Fernando Llorente missed a gilt-edged chance to level the scores and Atletico punished them late on.

Diego Simeone's men were rewarded for their efforts when Gabi's long-range strike deflected in off the back of Grzegorz Krychowiak.

But there was no luck about the third as Jackson curled home a stunning first goal in Atletico colours, capping a fixture in which the visitors' goalscorers paid tribute to departing midfielder Raul Garcia – on the brink of a move to Athletic Bilbao.

Atletico had been unimpressive in their season opener against Las Palmas and were often reliant on goalkeeper Jan Oblak, who was called into action immediately when Coke fired a venomous effort across the face of goal.

Sevilla should have taken the lead from the resulting corner, but Krychowiak failed to prod home from six yards out.

Atletico's confidence grew as Sevilla's grip on the contest loosened and Oliver Torres forced Beto into an instinctive stop with a fierce shot from the edge of the box.

Llorente went close to a debut goal on the half-hour mark – the former Juventus man just inches away from heading home Coke's cross, with Oblak alert to deny Benoit Tremoulinas on the rebound.

And Atletico made Sevilla pay for that miss moments later. A floored - but persistent - Antoine Griezmann played in Koke, who poked a low first-time effort in.

Sevilla upped the tempo after the interval. Coke again tested Oblak with a curling long-range effort, although Daniel Carrico did have to make a timely interception to prevent Fernando Torres snatching Atletico's second.

Parity should have been restored soon after the hour mark, but Llorente – largely starved of service throughout – fired wide from close-range when the ball fell to his feet.

And the Spain international was left to rue his miss as Gabi's speculative effort cannoned off midfielder Krychowiak to leave Beto stranded.

There was still time for Jackson – benched after struggling to impose himself against Las Palmas – to give Atletico fans a taste of what he is truly capable of, slamming home from 25 yards with his left foot.

Another lightning-quick counter almost gave Griezmann a deserved goal, his shot hit Beto's right-hand post but that miss did nothing to dampen Atletico celebrations.

Carpi 1-2 Inter: Jovetic snatches win for Mancini's men

    1853652_heroa.jpg

Stevan Jovetic scored twice - the second a last-gasp penalty - as Inter secured a 2-1 win away to Carpi on Sunday.

The 25-year-old took his tally to three goals in two games at Stadio Alberto Braglia to give Inter a 100 per cent start to the 2015-16 campaign, while leaving Carpi awaiting their first point.

Roberto Mancini handed Jovetic his first league start on Sunday and the Manchester City loanee repaid that faith with a close-range finish after 31 minutes.

Carpi had rarely threatened the Inter goal for much of the match but looked set to snatch a point when Antonio Di Gaudio levelled with nine minutes to play.

Jovetic ensured that did not happen, though, as he calmly slotted home an 89th-minute penalty after Fredy Guardin had been felled by Gabriel Silva.

It was just reward for Inter, who had dominated proceedings, while Carpi will take heart from their defensive resilience for much of the encounter.

Carpi – who made four changes from their opening-day loss to Sampdoria – had the better chances in a lively start, but Lorenzo Lollo and Ryder Matos both failed to stretch Samir Handanovic with weak efforts.

Having withstood the initial burst from their hosts, Inter began to dominate possession but Mancini's men found it difficult to break through the well-organised Carpi defence.

That all changed just after the half-hour as Jovetic timed his run perfectly to meet a deep cross from Guarin at the back post and rolled the ball into an unguarded net after his initial effort had just squeezed under Zeljko Brkic.

The hosts almost went in level at the break. Kamil Wilczek found room on the left-hand side of the Inter penalty area, but his shot was straight at Handanovic, who saved easily.

Inter resumed their control of proceedings after the restart but there were few chances on the Carpi goal, despite their neat passing - a weak effort from Rodrigo Palacio the best they could muster.

Carpi were happy to allow Inter to have the ball and relied on swift counterattacks to provide their rare chances, and it reaped dividends when the visitors failed to clear Kevin Lasagna's low delivery and Di Gaudio swept the ball home.

They were denied that first top-flight point, though, as Guarin was brought down in the closing minutes and Jovetic made no mistake from 12 yards to continue the fine start to his Inter career.

Monaco 0-3 Paris Saint-Germain: Cavani scores twice as Di Maria makes decisive debut

    1854322_heroa.jpg

Edinson Cavani scored twice and Angel Di Maria bagged an assist on his debut as Paris Saint-Germain won 3-0 away to Monaco on Sunday.

Cavani failed to find the target during three outings in his favoured centre-forward role leading into the match and he reverted to a wide attacking brief in the principality as Zlatan Ibrahimovic returned from a knee injury.

But the Uruguay international showed his striking instincts remain strong when he supplied a textbook headed finish 12 minutes into the second half, before latching onto a perfectly weighted pass from Ibrahimovic to double his tally in the 73rd minute.

It meant a first win over Monaco in Ligue 1 since 2007 for PSG, who handed a debut to Di Maria - the Argentina star beginning a fresh chapter in his career as a 65th-minute substitute following an anti-climactic 12 months at Manchester United.

Di Maria caught out the Monaco defence for fellow sub Ezequiel Lavezzi to complete the scoring seven minutes from time.

Laurent Blanc's men have now won their opening four league games without conceding a goal and, having taken a prized asset from Monaco with their midweek signing of full-back Layvin Kurzawa, their dominance of the early season was rarely under threat from opponents who are already seven points off the pace.

PSG's returning talisman Ibrahimovic was quickly into the action as he brought down Serge Aurier's right-wing cross with a superb first touch before fizzing a shot wide.

Recalled Monaco forward Stephan El Shaarawy embarked on a storming run down the PSG right shortly after, although a challenge from Blaise Matuidi did enough to take the sting out of his eventual shot.

Another fine Aurier cross found Cavani to head over and the eventual match-winner became the latest player to test Subasic after Maxwell scuffed Ibrahimovic's cutback into his path.

Monaco stood firm and enjoyed a spell of pressure of their own as the half wound down, although PSG goalkeeper Kevin Trapp remained untroubled.

Ibrahimovic headed Maxwell's left-wing cross into Subasic's arms as the visitors resumed on the front foot, although Trapp was called into action when El Shaarawy whipped goalwards in the 50th minute after good work from Anthony Martial – reportedly a €50 million PSG and Manchester United target.

The breakthrough came in the 57th minute as Maxwell and Ibrahimovic combined to release Matuidi down the left and Cavani timed his run perfectly to head emphatically home at the near post.

Di Maria was introduced in place of Lucas Moura and quickly imposed himself on the game, but Cavani could only find Subasic's midriff from his right-wing delivery.

The home goalkeeper had little chance when Ibrahimovic picked apart his backline and Cavani slotted a low finish before the high line was again exposed by Di Maria, whose fine pass was gleefully slammed home first time by Lavezzi – possibly the forward's last significant contribution for PSG with a deadline-beating switch to Inter mooted.

Raul Garcia set for Athletic Bilbao switch

    raul-garcia-atletico-madrid_i0x526it3qfw1pocwovjkssuf.jpg

Athletic Bilbao have confirmed they have reached an agreement with Atletico Madrid to sign midfielder Raul Garcia.

The Spain international was not involved in Atleti's 3-0 win over Sevilla on Sunday, although goalscorers Koke, Gabi and Jackson Martinez all paid tribute to the 29-year-old in their celebrations.

Athletic have since announced a provisional agreement over the transfer via their official Twitter account, while Atleti head coach Diego Simeone also confirmed the deal.

"The gestures were there for a man, a leader, who has given us a lot," Simeone told reporters after the match.

"He made a decision and we have to respect people who give us their heart. It was his decision and we've gone along with him. He gave his life for this shirt."

Athletic's interest in Garcia emerged in July as Ernesto Valverde became convinced he could tempt the experienced midfielder to San Mames by offering him the prospect of increased first-team football.

Despite Garcia struggling for playing time more and more over the last 12 months, club captain Gabi believes Atleti will feel his absence this season.

"Raul Garcia has a chance to leave. He's given us so much and we wish him the best. We'll miss him," he said after the win over Sevilla.

Poor early attitude cost Juventus - Allegri

    massimilianoallegri-cropped_1jdwf95cjhlf719x9e8kk6hcae.jpg

Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri has blamed his side's attitude for Sunday's 2-1 Serie A defeat at Roma.

Bosnia-Herzegovina duo Miralem Pjanic and Edin Dzeko were on target in a deserved triumph for the capital club, although Juventus hit back through Paulo Dybala three minutes from time despite having Patrice Evra sent off.

That set up a frantic finish, with previously under-utilised Roma goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny saving superbly from Leonardo Bonucci in stoppage-time.

Allegri was left to rue the fact that his team - who also lost on the opening weekend to Udinese - failed to hit their stride until the closing stages at the Stadio Olimpico.

"We reacted well, even though we didn’t show a positive attitude at the beginning," he told a press conference.

"It wasn't a great performance, aside from the final 10 minutes. We made too many technical mistakes and in the second half, when a change was there to be made, we conceded from a free kick.

"But our strong reaction is what we need to bear in mind when we get everyone back after the international break."

Despite Juve losing the opening two league games for the first time in Serie A history, Allegri is refusing to panic at this early stage of the campaign.

"I'm not worried about our zero points in the league, that’s something that can happen in football," he added.

"Yes, we have to catch up, but we’ve got all the time and quality to do so. We need to remain calm, clear headed and run through what didn’t work for us."

Mancini demands killer instinct from Inter after Carpi scare

    robertomancini-cropped_dqfh5jo77rfb1ugeoaypd4fzx.jpg

Roberto Mancini warned Inter must learn to kill a game off as they needed a late Stevan Jovetic penalty to beat Carpi 2-1 in Serie A.

The Inter boss was critical of his side for allowing Carpi back into Sunday's clash after Jovetic had opened the scoring after 31 minutes, with Antonio De Gaudio levelling with nine minutes to play.

Luckily for Mancini, the Montenegro international was on hand again to score from the spot late on, leaving Inter as one of only five teams to have won their opening two matches of the campaign.

"There are still 36 games to play, but it's nice to have won another game," Mancini said. "It was a painful challenge, as we had predicted.

"The team still needs to improve, we had to close the game out but instead we conceded an absurb goal.

"It was not easy to find space, but when you are winning 1-0 you have to try to close it out.

"We did well and created numerous opportunities, they they have to be taken at this level.

"Carpi played a good game but we deserved the three points."

Next up for Inter is the Milan derby, a match they have failed to win in their last three attempts.

Di Maria sets sights on Champions League conquest with PSG

    angel-di-maria-laurent-blanc-as-monaco-paris-sg-ligue-1-30082015_1xgu24tvt64gk1a307v01qanq8.jpg

Angel Di Maria believes Paris Saint-Germain must set their sights on both domestic and European glory this season after making an impressive debut for the Ligue 1 champions.

The Argentina international came on in the second half of PSG's emphatic 3-0 win over Monaco on Sunday and set up Ezequiel Lavezzi's goal with a sumptuous long pass.

Having put his disastrous year with Manchester United behind him, Di Maria is now looking to help PSG challenge for the Champions League as well as another clean sweep of trophies in France.

"I'm very happy, we won a very difficult match," he told Canal Plus. "Last year, PSG had a great season. We'll try to do the same this season and have a good showing in the Champions League.

"With work and a bit of luck, we can get there. I'm happy for my assist and for Pocho's [Lavezzi's] goal."

Edinson Cavani scored two fine goals earlier in the second half to set Laurent Blanc's side on their way to three points and the Uruguay star hopes to see their form continue.

"The team played a great match. There are a lot of games left, we'll do everything to continue in this way," Cavani said.

"In the first half, we failed to take advantage of the chances. Personally, I didn't have much success.

"The second half was much better, I was set up beautifully twice."

    Mourinho: Hazard must improve performances

    1755892_heroa.jpg

Jose Mourinho has suggested that Eden Hazard must improve his performance level after Chelsea slipped to a shock 2-1 loss to Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

Goals from Bakary Sako and Joel Ward gave the Eagles all three points on Mourinho’s 100th home game in charge of the club – with Alan Pardew’s men inflicting only the second defeat at Stamford Bridge of the Portuguese’s Blues reign.

Mourinho has hinted that Hazard – who won the PFA Player of the Year award last season – and a number of senior players must start performing after the Blues’ stuttering start to their title defence, having taken just four points from four games thus far.

"If you are the best player in the league, I think it should be a good responsibility to have a similar season than in the previous season,” he said.

"I don't want to analyse individual performances. In general terms, it is difficult to have a consistent performance when some of the players are not performing at a good level.

"When you have six or seven performing and three or four who are not at an acceptable level, it is hard for a team to be consistent in the performance."

Mourinho insists that he will work day and night to ensure that Chelsea return to form in the coming weeks, but says it would be “sad” if his players were demotivated.

"For myself, I feel the opposite. When I win, I want to win again, I want to win more. I feel fantastic motivation for more,” he added.

"If you win it once and the next you are not on fire, not ready for at least to fight for more, that is sad.

"You have players who have fantastic seasons and fantastic moments and the next season do not have the same.

"If you ask me: 'Will I accept this, cross my arms, sit in a nice chair and wait calmly for the performance level to be back?' No.

"I have to work, react, analyse and if I feel the players are not in conditions to react and give more, I have to make changes. I have never had a problem with that."

Beating Sevilla far from easy, insists Simeone

    emery-simeone-sevilla-atletico-madrid-liga-bbva_1hmi1ecrqbqmo1wpxza2kdx6tj.jpg

Diego Simeone insists Atletico Madrid's 3-0 win over Sevilla was nowhere near as comfortable as the scoreline might suggest.

The 2013-14 Liga champions withstood some heavy pressure from the home side, particularly in the first half, but emerged victorious thanks to goals from Koke, Gabi and a first in Spain's top flight from Jackson Martinez.

"The battle in the first half shows it was not easy," Atletico coach Simeone said to reporters after the match. "We faced a very complete team, very competitive, who attack you from the middle and from out wide. They fought for every ball.

"The best thing about my time was the high pressing. Both Antoine Griezmann and Fernando Torres were good and allowed us to keep Fernando Llorente quiet."

Club captain Gabi believes his side have laid down a marker with the result but is determined not to look too far ahead - especially with the visit of Barcelona to come after the international break.

"I think we went out to win the game from the off and it was a complete performance," he said. "Sevilla are a direct rival and we've taken a huge step forward.

"We'll keep working, step by step. Now we look to Barca, we're not looking too far ahead."

'De Bruyne is a game-changer for Manchester City' - Kompany

    1840562_heroa.jpg

Vincent Kompany believes that Kevin De Bruyne can be a “game-changer” for Manchester City after his fellow Belgian completed his protracted transfer to the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

City are believed to have paid a fee upwards of £55 million to sign De Bruyne from Wolfsburg, a club-record, with the former Chelsea playmaker having won the Bundesliga Player of the Year award in 2014-15.

De Bruyne racked up 28 assists in all competitions last season, whilst also scoring 16 goals, and Kompany has expressed his delight at the signing.

“I don’t know the figures but all I can say is I suppose you shouldn’t focus on numbers too much any more,” he told reporters. “If a player can improve a squad that bit more, the value is very difficult to assess because there’s so much competition to get the top players. That dictates it really.

“He’s a tremendous talent. What he gives you – he’s just got so many assists and goals in him, it doesn’t really matter how the game goes for him, he’s always making decisive plays.

“Over the course of the season that’s ultimately what you pay for. More goals, more assists, he’s just got something special.”

Kompany accepts that there will be a certain degree of pressure attached to De Bruyne due to the price paid to acquire his signature, but he has little doubt that his compatriot will prove a success at City.

“You’ve all been there – you compare yourself at the age of 18 or 20 to when you grow up, you change as a person,” he added. “He’s become the best player in Germany and we all know what great players play in the German league, so that says enough, that’s enough pressure as it is.

“To achieve something like that is pretty unique. It’s a completely different style of football that we play and certain players are better fitted to certain clubs. That’s just the way it is.”

Kompany says that he did not need to advise City to sign De Bruyne, but has praised the quality the 24-year-old possesses.

“They have a very good network of scouts and people who give them good advice but my opinion was pretty clear – in private and publicly,” he added.

“He’s a player that I rate and other than that our team has had a tradition of welcoming many players over the years, so everything is going to be just like it was with Raheem and done in such a way that we’ll carry on from what we’ve been building so far. He’s the most English guy from the Belgian national team.

“If you go through his family line I think his grandfather lives in England, his mother is virtually English. He could have played for England if you’d spotted him earlier.”

Beating Juventus shows Roma way forward - Garcia

    rudigarcia-cropped_bmp4xqpdtsla1wot3m1azu5xu.jpg

Rudi Garcia believes Sunday's 2-1 win over Juventus shows that Roma are close to their best form.

Roma's Serie A title challenge subsided badly during the second half of last season, but they deservedly beat the defending champions at the Stadio Olimpico in the second matchday of this campaign.

Second-half goals from Miralem Pjanic and Edin Dzeko crowned a vibrant display, although Paulo Dybala pulled a goal back after Juventus had Patrice Evra sent off to set up a nervy finish.

"We're a team that plays football, just as we did during my first 18 months in charge," Garcia was quoted as saying on Roma's official website.

"One of the strengths of this side is our team spirit and that goes for everyone, be it the guys starting the game or those coming off the bench. We know we've got quality footballers.

"I'm pleased for the players most of all. They're the ones who did the work out on the pitch, though we could've played better when leading 2-0 against 10 men. We dropped a little too deep after the opening goal and forgot to press as we did for the first 60 minutes of the match.

"I enjoy playing games like these and in terms of the confidence it can bring to the team, our win over Juventus can show us the way forward."

Dzeko's excellent header 11 minutes from time was his first goal since joining Roma from Manchester City.

"It's a fantastic feeling," the Bosnian told the club's website. "It was just pure emotion, so much emotion in one goal.

"I had been waiting for my first goal in Serie A and it happened today. So I'm happy for myself, the team and the fans. I believe we all deserved this victory."

'Chelsea target Stones didn't mean to hand in transfer request' - Martinez

    1847342_heroa.jpg

Roberto Martinez has praised the attitude of Chelsea target John Stones, and has hinted that the central defender did not want to hand in a transfer request.

The 21-year-old informed the club of his desire to leave last week, having seen Chelsea table offers of £20 million and £26m for his services.

Everton have taken a firm stance over Stones, insisting that he will not be sold before Tuesday’s transfer deadline, and Martinez has now hailed the professionalism shown by the young defender, while insinuating that he did not wish to request a move.

"He's such a professional," the Everton boss told reporters.

"I had other situations where I had players who couldn't cope and couldn't play. I had windows where I had to leave players out completely and when the window closed get him back in the team and what that represents - winning his team-mates over and the fans over.

"With John, it's very easy because he's a pristine professional. Obviously he's been put under massive, massive pressure. The transfer request was something he didn't mean to do."

Stones played as Everton drew 0-0 with Tottenham on Saturday, and Martinez says that he is yet to discuss Stones’ future with the defender.

"No, no, no. We haven't spoken about that,” he replied when asked if Stones had apologised for handing in a transfer request. “All we've been speaking about is the game and what we need to do. He's been a leader in that.

"[On Saturday] you saw a 21-year-old deal with that pressure and he played in that manner. For me, it shows he has potential to be England captain."
