Benzema would've been a good signing for Arsenal, admits Giroud

    1856322_heroa.jpg

Olivier Giroud insists he would have welcomed the signing of Karim Benzema at Arsenal this summer.

Goal exclusively revealed in May that the Gunners were lining up an ambitious bid for the Real Madrid striker but had been prepared to delay their move until the closing stages of the transfer window.

There is now a growing acceptance that Benzema is staying put in the Spanish capital but Giroud admits his fellow France international would have been a strong addition to Arsene Wenger’s side.

“The coach [Wenger] knows very well what he is doing, and sometimes you should not buy just to buy, and sometimes there are not players out there that you need, who are available,” Giroud told beIN Sports.

“We have a very good squad, with quality, and I am sure that with this squad we can go very far. But it would have been good if Karim had signed too.”

Giroud also maintains that he never had plans to leave Arsenal during the summer window.

“I would have been surprised if you had read a lot of things about my possibly leaving the club, because that was never on the table,” said the 28-year-old.

“Now, I am very good here, I say it, I repeat it. It is true that every year here there is speculation about a new striker signing.

“There were seasons when we signed [Alexis] Sanchez and [Danny] Welbeck, others when we were talking about [Luis] Suarez. It is obvious that in a club, a team, where a lot is expected, we need several good attackers and I understand that the fans want that we spend more money.”

De Bruyne arrival caps statement summer from Manchester City

    1830792_heroa.jpg

Since signing Sergio Aguero in 2011, Manchester City have repeatedly failed to bring in any attacking talent worthy of either playing alongside or standing in for the mercurial Argentine.

Alvaro Negredo, Stevan Jovetic, Jesus Navas and latterly Wilfried Bony are players signed for (relatively) significant sums who have struggled to make a positive impact at the Etihad Stadium, whether Aguero has been on the pitch or the sidelines.

Negredo's early season goals were important in 2013-14, Jesus Navas currently brings balance to Manuel Pellegrini's new system and Bony may yet get his chance, but for a club laying down roots in Manchester, these are not players who will leave a legacy.

Having failed to defend their Premier League title, City are starting from scratch again. This summer, though, they have sent a message not just to the English game, but to Europe as well.

While many on the continent may have been laughing behind their hands as the Blues splashed out £49 million on another Premier League product, Raheem Sterling, there is no doubt that they have locked down an exceptional talent with his best years ahead of him, who is making an instant contribution.

Following that up with the £55m capture of Kevin De Bruyne really will have made everybody sit up and take notice.

There was a feeling among City officials that they had encountered particularly resistant negotiations with Wolfsburg as a result of being seen in Germany as fully paid-up members of the nouveau riche. It was a similar story with Edin Dzeko in early 2011, and when signing Jerome Boateng from Hamburg six months earlier. Prising away De Bruyne, the Bundesliga's best player, did not go down well with those already concerned about English football's increasing financial might.

Indeed, when shopping for forwards in the last four years, City had not surpassed the £38 million they spent on Aguero in 2011. This summer they've done it twice, and by quite a margin.

If City have been slack in their attempts to bolster their forward line (the summer of 2013 can most generously be described as complacent), that is no longer the case. Over £100m has been parted with for two players that will give their rivals, at home and abroad, sleepless nights.

The balance in the team at present has got City playing some of their best football of the Abu Dhabi years; the performance in the defeat Chelsea is up there with the very best. The cover afforded to Bacary Sagna and Aleksandar Kolarov by Sterling and Navas has provided an extra safety net, as has the continued improvement of Eliaquim Mangala and the resurgence of captain Vincent Kompany.

Not to mention the £31.7m arrival of Nicolas Otamendi. The Argentine is a no-nonsense centre-back who is also comfortable on the ball, the type who could well become a club hero. His most successful route into the team may be in place of Kompany rather than alongside him, but it gives City incredible depth at the back, with Zabaleta and Clichy still to return.

City, for sure, have a squad which could easily win the Premier League. They should win it. The vast majority of domestic league matches are won simply by boasting better players than the opposition, and given the second-placed finish last time out despite a patchy campaign, anything less than a third title in five seasons would be a let-down.

There are issues to be addressed in midfield, however; ones which mean a Champions League semi-final is still a bridge too far. Whether or not De Bruyne adopts a deeper role - which has been mooted by some City officials - Yaya's fitness will need to be looked after, while Fabian Delph is untested at the top level.

But City can get on with the 2015-16 campaign knowing that those problems can wait until next summer; they have revitalised their attack, signed the best centre-back on the market and, in the process, assembled the best squad in the country. Premier League success and a domestic trophy should be the minimum... for now.

:dull:No Manchester United contact over Cillessen, insists Overmars

    jaspercillessen-cropped_19jny2qapycox1chhc0drux7jx.jpg

Ajax director of football Marc Overmars says there has been no contact from Manchester United regarding a possible move for goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen.

The Netherlands international has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford in recent weeks, with Real Madrid target David de Gea still out of Louis van Gaal's first-team picture.

A questionable performance from Sergio Romero during United's 2-1 defeat to Swansea City on Sunday added to talk of a late bid from United for Cillessen, but Overmars is adamant there is no dialogue ahead of Tuesday's deadline day in England.

"There is no contact with Manchester United," he told De Telegraaf. "I have heard nothing from Manchester United."

Three-time Eredivisie winner Cillessen was given his first international cap by Van Gaal in 2013 and formed part of the Dutch World Cup squad in Brazil last year.

Last week the 26-year-old distanced himself from rumours of a summer move to United, insisting "this season begins and ends at Ajax".

    Juventus confirm Lemina medical

    1605752_heroa.jpg

Juventus have confirmed Marseille midfielder Mario Lemina will undergo a medical on Monday ahead of completing a move to Turin.

The 21-year-old is reportedly set to join the club on an initial 12-month loan deal, which will cost the Bianconeri €1.5 million, and could sign on a permanent basis for €10m next summer if he impresses.

A statment on Juve's website said: "French-Gabonese midfielder Mario Lemina is in the city [Turin] where he is undergoing his medical examinations.

“The examinations for the Under-21 international will take place at the Clinica Fornaca di Sessant, and then at the Istituto di Medicina dello Sport in the capital of Piedmont.”

Lemina's agent revealed on Friday that negotiations were ongoing with the Serie A champions, while dismissing the prospect of a possible move to Inter or Napoli.

Juve are short of midfield options after selling Arturo Vidal to Bayern Munich and seeing Andrea Pirlo leave for New York City FC, while new signing Sami Khedira is out for two months with a thigh injury.

‘Even Bayern Munich couldn’t match Manchester City’s offer for De Bruyne’

    1797902_heroa.jpg

Manchester City’s signing of Kevin De Bruyne is the latest example of the Premier League’s unrivalled spending power, according to Volkswagen boss Martin Winterkorn.

VW-owned Wolfsburg spent the entire summer trying to resist offers for the Belgian playmaker, but, after a drawn out saga, eventually relented as City got their man in a £55 million deal.

And Winterkorn, who also sits on the supervisory board at Bayern Munich and is rumoured to have pushed for die Roten to sign De Bruyne, admits the spending power of English clubs is impossible to resist, with even the German champions playing catch up.

“Sometimes we are powerless against such sums,” the 68-year-old told Bild.

“Even Bayern Munich, who were interested [in De Bruyne], has said the same at the end of the day. Against such sums we cannot compete at the moment.”

He continued: “Whether [the £55m fee] is justified or not, we would have preferred that Kevin had stayed with us. But the conditions are as they are.

“When the English media pay these sums [record-breaking TV money deal], and with plenty of other donors, then you have to consider what to do to prevent the sell-off in Germany.”

Winterkorn believes De Bruyne would have been better placed staying at Wolfsburg, where he was the focal point of the team, to continue his development, suggesting the transfer was financially motivated.

“The fact that a player like Kevin De Bruyne will be leaving us, of course, is a great pity. We are sorry,” he added.

“For financial reasons, I can understand him, for sporting reasons I do not understand him. I am not convinced that he plays the role at Manchester City that he has played with us. One more year with us would have been good for him. That would have been the right thing for his sporting career.”

Neymar: Copa America mistakes all my fault

    neymar-barcelona_cfmm8ghovykg116csqnz8021t.jpg

Neymar has admitted to making "mistakes" during Brazil's Copa America campaign but insists he has seen the error of his ways. The 23-year-old was sent off in disgrace during the group stage clash with Colombia over the summer after headbutting Jeison Murillo.

The red card saw him handed a four-match ban, which ended his participation in the tournament, but the Selecao captain is confident there'll be no repeat of that indiscipline.

"I can't feel frustrated because it was my fault and my mistake," he said. "I did things wrong and I have learnt my lesson."Neymar's misery was compounded when he recently contracted mumps, before making his return in Barcelona's 1-0 victory over Malaga on Saturday.

"I felt good against Malaga," he continued. "I was surprised I came back so quickly and felt that good on the pitch."It was difficult watching the Super Cup matches at home but it's great to be back now and playing with my team-mates."

The former Santos man also expressed his wish to play in 2016 Olympic games in Rio, despite the fact that it will mean he has played in three consecutive international tournaments over the summer months.

"Everyone knows that my desire is to play in the Olympics," he added. "My wish is that people can understand and let me be free to play in the competition."

Di Maria: I was impatient to make PSG debut

    angeldimaria-cropped_dt8rfcvrgt7411k4j65y9l2tw.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain debutant Angel di Maria insists he felt no pressure as he made his Ligue 1 bow in Sunday's 3-0 victory over Monaco.

PSG had not won a league match at the Stade Louis II since 2007 but they maintained their perfect start to the 2015-16 season thanks to Edinson Cavani's brace and Ezequiel Lavezzi's late strike.

Di Maria, who came on for Lucas Moura in the 66th minute, teed up Lavezzi for PSG's third goal, lofting the ball over Monaco's defence for his fellow Argentine to volley into the net with seven minutes remaining.

And, having finally made his debut after missing his new club's first three games of the season with a hamstring injury, Di Maria could not hide his joy at starting his career in France with a victory.

"It was a great game. I'm very happy, because we wanted to win and get the three points and that's what we have done," he told PSG's official website.

"It's a great start. I was so impatient to play that I didn't feel any pressure at all."

PSG coach Laurent Blanc was thrilled with how the reigning champions handled what could have been a difficult start to the season, with the capital club yet to concede in Ligue 1.

"Of our first four matches this season, we have played three away, but we have still picked up 12 points, which is excellent," Blanc said.

"We have made a very good start to the season by playing the same way, home and away. That's what we have to do this season."

    Mancini: Inter need more players

    robertomancini-cropped_1kjf4943673rx133yd2k2iuqka.jpg

Inter coach Roberto Mancini wants to add more players to his squad before the transfer window closes.

The Nerazzurri completed the signing of Ivan Perisic from Wolfsburg on Sunday, having already recruited Geoffrey Kondogbia, Miranda, Stevan Jovetic and Jeison Murillo this summer.

But despite the vast number of new arrivals, Mancini believes Inter are still lacking depth with the window set to close on August 31 in Italy.

"The fact remains this is a very small squad and some roles are completely uncovered," Mancini told Sport Mediaset.

    "We'll see what happens tomorrow."

Mancini was speaking after Inter maintained their 100 per cent start to the season with a 2-1 win at newcomers Carpi.

Van Gaal: Romero not to blame for Manchester United defeat

    sergioromero-cropped_43skp2u9ycmq1s2xz492gg5cc.jpg

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal refused to blame Sergio Romero for Sunday's disappointing 2-1 loss at Swansea City.

Romero - continuing to deputising for Real Madrid target David de Gea - exhibited faulty kicking throughout and dubious positioning for Bafetimbi Gomis' winning goal as United slumped to their first Premier League defeat of the season.

After Juan Mata gave United an early second-half lead, Romero was beaten by Andre Ayew's header just past the hour-mark before reacting too slowly as Gomis tucked the ball underneath the Argentina international at his near post five minutes later.

Romero's performance sparked calls for United to sign a new goalkeeper before the transfer window shuts on September 1, should De Gea leave for Real Madrid as expected.

But when asked whether he was disappointed by Romero's display, Van Gaal said: "What I always say is that defending starts in front and not only in the last line. You can always analyse errors. But I don't think that is a good way.

"You have to see how the team is defending as a team and then I know what errors have been made. At the end, of course, the pressure for the last defender or goalkeeper is always higher.

"So I don't agree when you only say, or want to write, that the goalkeeper today was not so good. It is not like that."

    Zenit demand €100m for Witsel

    axel-witsel_1g4rig0ixyby51j2nojv4gv3nk.jpg

Zenit maintain that Axel Witsel is not for sale unless a club meet his €100 million (£72.8m) release clause.

The 26-year-old has been linked with a move to Tottenham, while Goal understands that the midfielder was on Chelsea’s shortlist earlier this summer.

AC Milan have also signalled their interest in the Belgium international but admit a deal would be difficult to finance, while the player himself claimed in June that he had been in talks over a switch to Juventus.

"The Belgian is still a Zenit player, the amount for his release clause is €100 million,” said a statement from TASS, Zenit’s press service.

The Russian transfer window closes on August 31.

Casemiro signs six-year Real Madrid extension

    1857372_heroa.jpg

Casemiro has signed a six-year extension to his Real Madrid contract, the club confirmed on Monday.

The 23-year-old joined the Spanish side from Sao Paulo in 2013 and spent last term on loan at Porto where he became a key player for the Portuguese side.

Rafael Benitez is said to be a big fan of the the Brazil international and he featured for the capital club in Saturday's 5-0 win over Real Betis, coming on to play the final 25 minutes and helped set up Gareth Bale's second goal.

Casemiro's previous deal had been set to expire in summer 2017, but Madrid have now reaffirmed their faith in the midfielder by handing him a new contract which ties him to the club until June 2021.

The midfielder impressed on loan at Porto last season with a string of fine performances, particularly in the Champions League.

Porto consequently opted to exercise their option to make the deal permanent, only for Madrid to make use of their buy-back clause in return.

Casemiro said in July of staying at Madrid permanently: "I'm living another dream and it feels like I've returned home. I was gone for a year but I was always thinking about being at Real Madrid. I'm really excited about triumphing here."

Liverpool agree Borini sale to Sunderland

    458271_heroa.jpg

Sunderland have agreed a deal worth £7 million to sign out-of-favour Liverpool striker Fabio Borini, Goal understands.

Borini is due to travel to Wearside on Monday to undergo a medical, with the Black Cats increasingly confident they have seen off competition from Inter and Watford for his signature.

The 24-year-old spent the 2013-14 season on loan at the Stadium of Light and became a popular figure, scoring seven goals in 32 Premier League appearances to help Sunderland preserve their Premier League status.

Liverpool then accepted a formal bid from the Wearsiders to sign Borini in the summer of 2014, only for the Italian to turn down a permanent switch as he pledged to fight for a first-team place at Anfield.

But faced with the summer arrivals of Christian Benteke, Divock Origi and Danny Ings, Borini has accepted he has no long-term future at Liverpool and is ready to move elsewhere.

:baffled::eek:Martial flies in 'to seal Manchester United move'

    1496692_heroa.jpg

Manchester United appear to be closing in on a deal for Monaco striker Anthony Martial after the French Football Federation confirmed the 19-year-old had left the national team in order to travel to England.

Signing a new striker is Louis van Gaal's top priority before the close of the English transfer window on Tuesday, with Javier Hernandez widely reported to be in advanced talks with Bayer Leverkusen.

And Martial, who scored nine goals in 35 Ligue 1 appearances for Monaco last season and was linked with Tottenham this summer, has risen to the top of United's wishlist after Chelsea snatched unsettled Barcelona forward Pedro from Van Gaal's grasp earlier this month.

A statement from the FFF read: "Anthony Martial was presented Monday at 11:00 at the gathering of the France team at Clairefontaine. He requested from Didier Deschamps permission to travel to England to sign a contract with Manchester United.

"Given the exceptional circumstances, the coach has acceded to the request of the player.

"Anthony Martial left Clairefontaine Monday at 12:00. He will return on Tuesday morning."
Martial has come to be regarded as one of Ligue 1's brightest attacking talents since joining Monaco from Lyon in the summer of 2013 and has represented France at every youth level.

He would become United's sixth signing of a busy summer, joining Memphis Depay, Morgan Schneiderlin, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Sergio Romero and Matteo Darmian at Old Trafford.
