Kane: I want to prove people wrong

    harrykane-cropped_te2yvldga8c11p6puugapv6a9.jpg

Tottenham striker Harry Kane is determined to return to last season's prolific form after adding his name to the goalscorers' list in Euro 2016 qualifying on Saturday.
The 22-year-old came off the bench to score as England qualified for next year's tournament in France courtesy of a 6-0 rout of Group E minnows San Marino.

Kane netted 31 goals in all competitions last term and despite having failed to score in his first four games for Spurs this season, the attacker is now confident the goals will flow.

"Obviously a lot has been said about me not scoring yet this season, but the confidence is still there," Kane said ahead of Tuesday's qualifier against Switzerland."I think you saw that in the finish. I am delighted to get on the scoresheet and hopefully I can get the ball rolling now and push on."

After coming on with half an hour to play in Serravalle, Kane did not take long to find the back of the net as he smartly lifted the ball over the onrushing goalkeeper for his second international goal. And now the youngster, who enjoyed a breakthrough campaign in 2014-15, says the pressure on him has been lifted.

"It was a little bit [of a weight on my shoulders]. Obviously every striker wants to be scoring, so when you're not, when people are talking, you want to prove them wrong."When I came off the bench, I knew it was a good opportunity to get on the scoresheet.

"I am delighted with that, but the most important thing was that we won and now we are qualified."

Del Bosque: Pique night out was sanctioned

    gerard-pique-spain_7rxyzrjn32rt19puc6ja5bd2r.jpg

Spain manager Vicente Del Bosque has defended Gerard Pique's recent night out despite the defender being criticised by supporters.

The Barcelona centre-back has been booed by a number of fans in his recent appearances for the national team, and has been criticised for visiting a Gijon nightclub in the build-up to Saturday's clash with Slovakia.

That led to some supporters shouting that he was drunk as he made his way onto the team coach following their win in Oviedo that saw them move to the top of Group C.

But Del Bosque has defended his player and said the players going on a night out together was sanctioned.

"Pique was allowed to leave, it does not bother me," he told reporters.

The former Real Madrid manager also revealed David de Gea is ready to play should he be required.

The Manchester United goalkeeper has not played for the Red Devils this season, and was left out against Slovakia as Iker Casillas was preferred.

But Del Bosque admits he would be open to picking the former Atletico Madrid man against Macedonia on Tuesday.

"De Gea is ready to play. I don't know if he will or not, but he's ready," he added.

Pogba needs help to thrive as Juventus No.10, says Camoranesi

    paul-pogba-roma-juventus-serie-a_1pzigstkity1113ag4qoqo4mj3.jpg

Paul Pogba needs help to become integral to Juventus after being handed the No.10 shirt, according to former midfielder Mauro Camoranesi.

Pogba, who was the subject of reported overtures from Chelsea in the summer, has become one of the most highly-rated midfielders in the world at the age of 22.

The Frenchman has made over 130 appearances for the club following his free transfer from Manchester United in 2012 but Camoranesi maintains that his team-mates must also step up to the plate to lighten the load on Pogba in 2015-16.

"It’s strange to see the Frenchman with that number on his shoulders: he has other characteristics,” he told Corriere dello Sport. “One cannot ask you to drag the team at his age, he has a great future ahead, and has proven to have huge room for improvement.

“Right now he is the most important player in the team but to load him with too many expectations would be wrong. It risks burning him out. If he gets the right support he will become crucial for Juve."

Juventus have lost such stars as Carlos Tevez, Andrea Pirlo and Arturo Vidal in the last three months, but Camoranesi maintains that the club can succeed even without the previously indispensable trio.

"We must be within the dynamics of a team to assess and make judgments; for sure Tevez, Pirlo and Vidal had a lot of charisma and now that they’re not there that is lacking,” he added.

“I do not know if the guys who arrived this year have the same profile, they can certainly count on people like Buffon and Barzagli, just to name a few, who have plenty of experience and charisma both on and off the pitch.

"I really like the project. They have a great mix of young talents and established stars like Khedira or Mandzukic, players who in their career have proven to be competitive at international level, have experience and are up to wearing the black and white jersey. "

Juve, however, are yet to collect a point in Serie A, losing to Udinese and Roma, but Camoranesi maintains that he unworried by his former club’s poor start to the season.

"It’s strange to see the team with no points in the standings, but it’s is part of the game,” he added. “So far they have played only 180 minutes, but there are 38 games. In recent years Juventus won the league title mathematically when there were three or four games to go, so I don’t see the problem.

“Of course, starting the season with two consecutive defeats is certainly not the best and does not please anyone, but the club has put together a good group that has the potential to win again. I'm sure.”

Di Maria: PSG's 'enormous' progress motivates the players

    angel-di-maria-laurent-blanc-as-monaco-paris-sg-ligue-1-30082015_1xgu24tvt64gk1a307v01qanq8.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Angel Di Maria says the Ligue 1 winners "enormous" progress motivates the club's players in training every day.

The Argentine winger moved to the French capital from Manchester United for £44 million after just a single season at Old Trafford and has been impressed by his new club's development on and off the pitch.

And after making his debut for the Parisians in a 3-0 victory over Monaco, Di Maria has revealed his pleasure with his new surroundings.

"My first impressions of my new team-mates? Very good. I knew all the players a little but when I came here I have seen their qualities and the way they train," the 27-year-old said.

"It's possible to work in good conditions and to progress on every level, I believe that his allows improvement, the opportunity to continue winning.

"The club has progressed enormously and that is motivating the players, too."

Di Maria was forced to wait to make his first start for the champions due to a hamstring injury he suffered at this summer's Copa America in Chile.

However, the attacker produced a performance to remember as he provided an assist for compatriot Ezequiel Lavezzi and admits he had been itching to take to the field.

"Was I impatient for my PSG debut? Yes, of course. After my first match I was content. I had to wait for it," he added.

"I had been training for two and a half weeks and I was desperate to play, to play with my team-mates and try to show my qualities. I had a great desire. Thank God it happened and all went well. I gave an assist and the happiness was total"

'Berahino must grow up and show West Brom some respect' - Pulis

    saido-berahino-west-brom_1v85v2qpkzwh21n8d6cyqd5z6b.jpg

Tony Pulis has told Saido Berahino that he must "grow up" and focus on his football, but is ready to welcome the unsettled striker back into his West Brom side.

Berahino was the subject of a number of failed bids from Tottenham during the transfer window and later hit out at West Brom chairman Jeremy Peace on Twitter, writing: "Sad how i cant say exactly how the club has treated me but i can officially say i will never play Jeremy Peace."

Despite that claim, the 22-year-old was named in West Brom's final Premier League squad and, having been granted a period of leave following an eventful deadline day last Tuesday, is expected to return to training.

Head coach Pulis is now keen to draw a line under the matter and warned Berahino that he has plenty of bridges to build to earn back the respect of fans and team-mates.

Speaking to the Daily Mail , Pulis said: "Saido's problem has been how he he's gone about it. I spoke to Saido and told him not to get involved in anything else but football but again, unfortunately, he didn't listen. By handing in a transfer request, he only antagonised the whole situation.

"Respect has to be earned and Saido has to learn that lesson. West Brom have nurtured Saido's career for over a decade, they deserve the utmost respect and at times unwillingly he has shown them little.

"He has to grow up and wise up to the fact that people at West Brom have supported him right from the beginning of his career.

"It will be difficult to integrate Saido into this group. His attitude will be questioned. The supporters will also be looking for a player who wears their badge with commitment and honesty, they will want to see Saido showing the respect they deserve."

Sneijder: Netherlands lost 3-0, but didn't play that badly!

    wesley-sneijder-netherlands-euro-qualifier_1xbkx1wnwdj0919wcbqzwbv0l0.jpg

Wesley Sneijder admits the Netherlands only have themselves to blame after qualification for Euro 2016 was taken out of their hands.

Oranje's poor campaign continued on Sunday as they fell to a crushing 3-0 defeat by Turkey, with their opponents leapfrogging them into third spot and ending their automatic qualification aspirations.

Despite another poor result, Sneijder insists his team were not outplayed in their Group A qualifier but admits they can only look within for answers.

"A layman would say that we had no chance if you see it was 3-0. But we didn't play that bad and had a couple of good chances.

"But the reality shows that we are on the 4th spot and we don't have our chances in our own hands. We can only blame ourselves for that."

With Iceland and the Czech Republic having already sealed their place in next summer's tournament, the experienced midfielder was unable to give reasons for his country's poor showing.

"I don't know what the problem is," Sneijder confessed.

"It could be a matter of quality, but also concentration. You can't train that, it has to come from yourselves."

Lloris: Martial can be a great player for France

    anthony-martial-france_7ck96x7mqf52193qpananhtpc.jpg

France goalkeeper Hugo Lloris believes that Manchester United new boy Anthony Martial can become a “great” at international level.

The 19-year-old, who completed a £58 million move to Old Trafford from Monaco on transfer deadline day, made his international debut in the 1-0 friendly win over Portugal last week.

And Lloris, who was linked with a move to United from Tottenham in the summer, has tipped the teenager to live up to his huge price-tag on both the domestic and global stage.

"He is a bit shy, but is well involved in the group. He's going to make his mark, but it's never easy,” Lloris told reporters.

"We talked a lot about him lately. He has to digest all of that, but he has huge potential.

"I'm sure that tomorrow, or in the future he will serve the national team and continue to grow.

"In any case, he really has huge potential to become a great player. But he must take one step after another."

Carrick withdraws from England squad through injury

    michael-carrick-england_1ag8ybho238f01s2hjcsly4uu4.jpg

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has withdrawn from the England squad due to injury.

The Three Lions qualified for Euro 2016 with a 6-0 win over San Marino on Saturday, with James Milner and Jonjo Shelvey making the cut ahead of the former Tottenham man.

Having previously been tipped to make a return to the starting line-up against Switzerland on Tuesday, the 34-year-old will not be afforded the opportunity to improve on his 33 caps as he returns to Old Trafford for treatment.

The news will come as a blow to Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal, who has utilised the midfielder in all four of the club's Premier League clashes so far this season.

Rooney: My preparation will be better for Euro 2016

    wayne-rooney-england_bxsd7nhhu6ew1k62mcg1mztn5.jpg

England captain Wayne Rooney has urged his international team-mates to learn from his mistake of going on a family holiday to Las Vegas ahead of Euro 2012.

Rooney travelled to the United States before the tournament in Ukraine and Poland, where the Manchester United striker was banned for the first two games of the tournament.

The 29-year-old - whose goal in the 6-0 victory over San Marino in a Euro 2016 qualifier on Saturday saw him become England's joint-record goalscorer alongside Bobby Charlton on 49 - believes the extended break affected his performances and wants his fellow Three Lions stars to avoid a similar error ahead of next year's Euros in France.

"I went on holiday, which I regret," Rooney said. "I thought it was no problem and now I know I shouldn't have done it.

"Flying so far it takes a while to get over the jet-lag. Maybe not having a long break between the season finishing is probably the best thing.

"The senior lads will sit down with the manager and the staff organising the tournament to work out what we can do better.

"I'll certainly get my part right this time."

England's victory over San Marino booked their spot in France and they next face Switzerland in Group E on Tuesday at Wembley.

Manchester United new boy Martial 'the next Henry' - Saha

Louis Saha believes that new Manchester United signing Anthony Martial can emulate Thierry Henry at Old Trafford following his £58 million move to the club.

Martial completed his big-money move to United on transfer deadline day, with a number of pundits raising questions over the transfer fee paid for the 19-year-old.

Saha, though, insists that Martial can make a major impact in the Premier League, and has backed his compatriot to thrive under the management of Louis van Gaal.

"He's got that speed, that power, he's got that youth in him so he'll surprise a lot of defenders because they don't know him," Saha, who spent four years United between 2004 and 2008, told Omnisport.

"It's a great asset for Manchester United and that's what they needed because up front they lack speed sometimes.

"In France we call him the next Thierry Henry because he can play left or right, he's got a great ability with the ball, he can take on three, four players with ease, there is no problem. At the same time, the new generation have no fear.

"He's got such an ability that he can win trophies for Manchester United I believe that, but I don't want to put too much pressure on him."

Martial has scored 15 goals in his senior career thus far.

Lucas Silva eyes swift return to Real Madrid

    lucas-silva_1bkhv71ta0tqs1qorqhxzd6qpt.jpg

Real Madrid-owned Lucas Silva is hopeful that his season-long loan move at Marseille goes a long way to proving his worth for the Spanish club.

Seemingly adapting well to life in France, the Brazilian midfielder is nevertheless eager to return to the Santiago Bernabeu and has outlined a clear plan to fulfil his wishes.

“I intend to have a good season in France, improve, play at the Olympic Games next year, then return to Real Madrid,” the 22-year-old told Globoesporte. “When I had opportunities at Madrid I think I did well, but then I lost a bit of space.

“I was adapting to a new style of football and country, but I think it was nonetheless important for me to join Madrid. The last six months were a very good experience.

“I couldn't stay under the new coaching staff because I didn't have a Spanish passport, but Rafa Benitez wished me luck and told me I'd remain in his thoughts. It's a good opportunity for me to demonstrate my qualities.”

On the subject of qualities, Silva is aware that there are certain facets of his game that need improving – something he feels he will have the perfect opportunity to do at his new club.

“Marseille are a big club. The most important thing is to be involved with a great team, and my objective is to get up to speed with European football.

“The coach played a key role after my arrival. He told me I'd help the team in many ways and that I'd have a great opportunity to play and generate good rhythm. I hope to have a great season.”

Shearer: Van Gaal's time is up

    louisvangaal-cropped_1m624l71zutah1vouj0sb9skjh.jpg

Alan Shearer has hit out at Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal over his inability to build a winning team and has accused the Dutchman of letting his team play 'dull' football.United spent over £100m in transfers this summer but currently sit fifth in the Premier League table having taken seven points from four games.

Former England skipper Shearer has not been impressed with their performances so far this campaign, stressing that Saturday's match versus Liverpool is a must-win for the Old Trafford side.

"I would argue Louis van Gaal cannot even afford to draw the game against Liverpool," Shearer writes for The Sun. "He has been asking for more time for his team to blend, for young players to develop etc. Time is up I'm afraid - the time is now.

"You cannot oversee the changes he has made, backed by hundreds of millions, and then claim you are a victim because it needs time to blend. It is your job to mould a side and I would suggest a year is plenty for a club of Manchester United's standing."You can get away with the dull, functional football Van Gaal is dishing up if you are getting results. But if you go back to the end of last season, Van Gaal's league run over the last 10 games now stands at three wins, three draws and four defeats.

"Van Gaal's CV has afforded him the time that David Moyes was not given. But a poor result on Saturday and questions will start to be asked."

De Bruyne right to leave Wolfsburg for Manchester City, says Benaglio

    kevin-de-bruyne-wolfsburg_1bwpswyqm7z6r19gnqahixjchh.jpg

Kevin De Bruyne was right to leave Wolfsburg to join Manchester City , according to his former team-mate Diego Benaglio .

The 24-year-old departed the Bundesliga club earlier this summer, joining City for a fee of £55 million.

And Benaglio feels that City's lucrative offer left De Bruyne with little choice but to move on.

"Of course, it is a shame that Kevin and Ivan Perisic have left the club," the goalkeeper told Bild.

"Kevin is simply an extraordinary player. When you are being honest, you can understand someone when such an offer comes in.

"Kevin has always been honest. He never said that he would 100 per cent certain stay at Wolfsburg, only to backtrack the day after. One can perfectly understand his move.

"But I think we have compensated for his exit pretty well with the arrival of Julian Draxler and Dante."

De Bruyne could make his debut for Manchester City in the match at Crystal Palace on Saturday.

'Manchester City see De Bruyne as the Messiah' - Boateng

    kevin-de-bruyne-wolfsburg_1bwpswyqm7z6r19gnqahixjchh.jpg

Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng believes Kevin De Bruyne might struggle to live up to the high expectations at Manchester City following his big-money move, claiming the Premier League outfit see him as "the Messiah".

The Premier League leaders reportedly paid in excess of €70 million to lure the 24-year-old away from Wolfsburg during the summer transfer window, but Boateng is not convinced De Bruyne will make an immediate impact at his new club.

"The transfer fee they paid for him brings enormous pressure with it," Boateng was quoted as saying by Kicker ."Manchester City have brought him in like he is the Messiah. They are expecting miracles from him.

"But life in the Premier League is nothing like in the Bundesliga. Referees don't whistle for fouls as often and the game is a lot faster as a result."A lot of teams still play long balls, even if City themselves employ a different style."

Boateng then went on to discuss the large amounts of money spent by Premier League clubs over the past few months and stressed that English clubs' financial strength is not necessarily a bad thing for Bundesliga outfits."The transfer fees that are being paid are unbelievable, but that's the way football has developed in recent years," he explained. "I think only more money will be spent in the future.

"The good thing is that all the money from the Premier League finds its way to Germany, allowing clubs here to spend as well."

De Gea may never get another chance to join Real Madrid - Mendieta

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea may never get another chance to join Real Madrid, says Gaizka Mendieta.

After the Spain international's summer switch to the Santiago Bernabeu crashed and burned in the final hours of the transfer window, he is considering signing a new long-term contract with the Red Devils.

Relations between the two clubs have been strained as blame is thrown around over whose fault it was that the move did not go through, but Mendieta says that De Gea will have to accept the frustration.

"Let's see what happens now because both sides are upset with what happened, both seem to be blaming each other," he told Omnisport.

"I think, on the player's side, it's hard. I'm not sure if we will see another chance for De Gea to go back to Madrid.

"He certainly is going to be the best goalkeeper for Spain in the next couple of years."

Former United keeper Edwin van der Sar is similarly bemused by the unusual circumstances of the failed deal and feels that De Gea's next step is hard to predict.

"It's a strange situation," Van der Sar remarked.

"[He's been] one of the best goalkeepers of the last two years and, the way the situation unrolled, it's not nice for the player or for the clubs. So we'll see what happens; I know Louis quite well and I'm not sure!

    Barcelona to make Nolito enquiry

    399440_heroa.jpg

Barcelona sporting director Robert Fernandez has revealed the club will make an enquiry over the signing of Celta Vigo star Nolito ahead of the January transfer window.

The Catalans are currently banned from signing players until January, meaning close-season arrivals Arda Turan and Aleix Vidal will have to wait until the New Year before making their debuts for the club.

Spain international Nolito, 28, was with Barca as a youngster and has been regularly linked with a return to Camp Nou over recent months after two strong campaigns with Celta.

Fernandez has indicated he will make an approach to Luis Enrique's former club to explore the possibility of signing the forward as he looks to replenish the club's attacking depth following Pedro's move to Chelsea.

"It is true that there are a series of players we are looking at," Fernandez told Esport3 .

"Nolito is a player that both Luis Enrique and myself know very well, but it is not an easy situation.

"It is a possibility in the winter market. We will see if it can happen or not."

Fernandez also confirmed new contracts for Brazilian duo Rafinha and Adriano were close to being agreed and spoke of his confidence over upcoming talks with star forward Neymar, as well discussing his positive relationship with Luis Enrique.

He continued: "The deals [for Rafinha and Adriano] are on track. You can say, more or less, there are agreements. Soon we will talk with Neymar and I have no doubts that he will continue here.

"I had my first contact with the coach after the final in Berlin. We spoke at the training ground. You can tell very quickly if you have chemistry with a person and I left that meeting convinced about him.

"He has helped me a lot since I started here. We speak about everything. I don’t think about him ever leaving his role here and I see him staying for many years."

Pogba: 'Little old man' Martial has great potential

Juventus and France star Paul Pogba has hailed the maturity of "little old man" Anthony Martial following his move to Manchester United .

The 19-year-old completed a sensational deadline-day transfer to the Red Devils from Monaco for a fee which could reportedly rise to £59 million (€80m) including future bonuses.

Pogba himself began his professional career at Old Trafford, but left in 2012 for Juventus having made just five senior appearances.

And the 22-year-old is in no doubt as to his compatriot's potential and believes he will make significant progress playing in the Premier League.

"I already call him 'little old man,'" Pogba told Telefoot . "He's 19 and he's already very mature for his age.

"He has great qualities and very big potential. He's going to bring a lot to the French team and I'm very happy for him.

"Now he's changed club and he's going to get to know the Premier League. He's going to play with some big players and he'll make a lot of progress."

Rooney: I want more than to just break England record

Wayne Rooney insists that he will not be satisfied solely with breaking England's scoring record against Switzerland on Tuesday, and says that the country should "get behind" team-mate Harry Kane.

The Manchester United and England captain moved level with Bobby Charlton on 49 goals for the national side during Saturday's 6-0 Euro 2016 qualifying win over San Marino and could break new ground against Switzerland at Wembley.

With the issue having dominated discussion in recent weeks, Rooney is eager to break the record as soon as possible but insists that he plans on passing the 50-mark.

"Of course it would be nice to do it at Wembley, it's an iconic stadium both in England and around the world so it'd be nice to do it there," explained the 29-year-old.

"Then we can move on and concentrate on the team. That's the most important thing – to try to win the game and finish top.

"If it happens tomorrow then great, but if not it won't concern me.

"I feel I've got a lot of games left to play for England and if I was saying I just wanted 50 goals I'd be lying and disappointed.

"I want to try to score as many goals as possible and I've got plenty of games left to do that.

"Hopefully it'll be more than 50 by the time I've finished playing."

Tottenham striker Kane was also on target at the weekend – scoring his first competitive goal for club or country since May after a breakthrough season last term.

Despite struggling to replicate last season's form - when he scored 31 goals in all competitions - Rooney believes that Kane will soon rediscover his scoring touch.

"He's a great player, he had a fantastic season last season and everyone needs to slow down with the criticism or pressure they've tried to put him under," he added.

"You can see the talent he has and we need to get behind him as a country because he's a special player who scores goals.

"The goal against San Marino will give him confidence, he just has to keep doing what he's doing and I'm sure the goals will come."

Italy boss Conte slams Pirlo criticism

Italy boss Antonio Conte has hit back at recent criticism of Andrea Pirlo after the player came under fire following a below average performance against Malta.

The 36-year-old was left on the bench in the subsequent match against Bulgaria, but nothing from the player's national team coach suggests that any faith has been lost in his abilities.

"What disappoints me most is the lack of respect shown towards an immense player," Conte told Sky Sport. “He deserves more respect in every way."Pirlo cannot be considered irreplaceable one day and the next ready for the scrap heap."

Gianluigi Buffon, a fellow veteran who reached the 150 caps milestone against Bulgaria, was also quick to defend the midfield icon."Every player knows when it's time to stop, but if you ask me Andrea still has plenty to offer," he said. "He could even become crucial for us, as he always has been when games really matter."

PSG and Italy midfielder Marco Verratti has sought to stay out of the debate about who should start alongside him in the Azzurri team.
