Fifa needs a new leader - Prince Ali

    prince-ali-2-06042015_1wmg93z55xojr12a2vucz1dzci.jpg

Fifa presidential candidate Prince Ali bin al-Hussein says football's world governing body must appoint a new leader following the latest crisis surrounding the organisation.

Current president Sepp Blatter - who beat Ali in May's election - has been made the subject of an investigation by Swiss authorities.

Part of the case surrounds an alleged payment of £1.3 million made by the 79-year-old to Uefa chief Michel Platini in 2011, who has since claimed the money was purely for wages.

Prince Ali spoke out about the latest developments on Saturday and claims the majority of the game's member associations are in favour of change at the top of Fifa.

"The need for new leadership that can restore the credibility of Fifa has never been more apparent," he said in a statement.

"We cannot change the past, but we can have a future where Fifa Member Associations are able to focus on football rather than worrying about the next scandal or criminal investigation involving Fifa leadership.

"We have to accept that changing Fifa is not a matter of choice; it has already changed, shaken to its very core by the scandals that have decimated our governing body and cast a cloud over the entire organisation.

"We have a duty to use our expertise, our experience, and our knowledge to lift that cloud by taking action to demonstrate that Fifa is worthy of the sport it oversees on behalf of the players, the fans and the millions of young boys and girls who can benefit from it.

"Change, as I have always said, is a process. It is not an event. The process of change at Fifa began in May. We have an opportunity in February to carry that momentum forward. We must now come together and work to restore Fifa's credibility and reputation by bringing about the change that is so clearly needed.

"I have heard from many member associations over the last 24 hours, and what I have heard gives me confidence that, working together, we can emerge from this stronger."

    Guarin: Inter thinking about Scudetto

    fredy-guarin-mauro-icardi-cropped_b917n7kg0y7v1m1nuahcgverv.jpg

Inter midfielder Fredy Guarin believes his side should consider themselves capable of winning the Serie A title this season.

Roberto Mancini's side are three points clear at the top of the table, having won all five of their opening games, and already have a 10-point gap to reigning champions Juventus.

Guarin is thrilled with Inter's start to the campaign after their inconsistent form over recent seasons and says there should be a growing belief in their chances of ending Juve's Scudetto dominance, ahead of their match with Fiorentina on Sunday.

"What's great about football is that things change so quickly," the Colombia international told reporters at the launch of his website, FredyGuarin.com.

"After three years of not finding the right way forward, there were positive changes. I had difficulty during that period, but I think I gained in experience and today we have a great opportunity with this team, this coach and these new players to lift our heads and think about winning the Scudetto.

"To be considered a great team, you have to earn it one match at a time. Mentality is very important, as is making sure we fix our mistakes. What really counts is to be a solid squad, to leave no room for doubt."

Inter have been criticised by some for the level of their performances so far, with Mancini's side having won four of their five matches 1-0, but Guarin says such talk only spurs them on.

"What do I say to critics? Nothing," he added. "The pitch does the talking, as far as we're concerned they're motivating us to do better."

Guarin came close to joining Juventus in January 2014, though the move failed to materialise, but the 29-year-old insists he is happy to remain at San Siro.

"In reality I never felt distant from Inter," he added. "The club let me know I was part of their plans and I said from day one that I'm prouder to be part of Inter than any other team I've played for.

"Would I like to end my career at Inter? You never know what might happen, but I hope to win things with them now."

Tottenham 4-1 Manchester City: Spurs run rampant with help from offside misses

    1983822_heroa.jpg

Harry Kane ended his long wait for a Tottenham goal as his side came from 1-0 down to thrash Manchester City 4-1 at White Hart Lane on Saturday.

Kevin De Bruyne's third goal in as many games put the Premier League leaders in front midway through the first half but Eric Dier's superb strike levelled matters in the 45th minute.

Toby Alderweireld's header handed Spurs the lead before Kane fired in a controversial first goal of the season to put Mauricio Pochettino's men 3-1 up. Erik Lamela's composed finish completed a sensational comeback as City conceded three in one half for the first time in two years.

The win moves Spurs to within three points of City, who have now lost back-to-back Premier League games and will relinquish top spot in the table should Manchester United beat Sunderland later on Saturday.

Chances were few and far between in the opening exchanges, though Hugo Lloris reacted well to turn Sergio Aguero's curling effort wide of the post before the Argentina striker was denied by a good block from Jan Vertonghen.

Tottenham began to grow into the game but handed City the advantage on 25 minutes. Kyle Walker's loose pass on the edge of the City area allowed Yaya Toure to burst forward on the break and pick out De Bruyne, who fired low beneath Lloris from the right of the box.

A fine low save from Lloris prevented Raheem Sterling from doubling City's lead within two minutes, before Lamela lashed over the bar when under little pressure inside the area and Willy Caballero - included in the starting XI with regular number one Joe Hart on the bench due to a minor injury - denied Kane's fierce drive.

The former Malaga goalkeeper could do nothing to prevent Dier levelling the scores in the 45th minute, though. His point-blank save from Son Heung-min saw the ball break to the 21-year-old outside the area and he drilled a low shot through the crowded box and into the bottom corner.

City - aggrieved that Tottenham's goal was allowed to stand despite Kyle Walker being clearly offside in the build-up - started the second half on the front foot but Spurs snatched the lead when Alderweireld headed Lamela's free-kick over the stranded Caballero, who tried and failed to claim the cross.

Spurs had their tails up and they doubled their lead just past the hour mark as Kane brought an end to a domestic goal drought lasting 748 minutes - albeit in controversial fashion - as he fired in the rebound after Christian Eriksen's free kick clattered the crossbar despite standing in an offside position.

City pushed for a way back into the match and Jesus Navas' stinging drive had Lloris at full stretch before Sterling pulled a low shot wide. At the other end, the offside flag came to City's rescue when Son poked Nacer Chadli's header over the line.

Lamela clinched the points for Spurs in fine style with a little over 10 minutes to play, collecting Clinton N'Jie's pass on the break before working his way around Caballero and slotting home.

Kane: Goal drought had left me moody

    harry-kane-premier-league-tottenham-v-manchester-city-260915_nrnrdq62aud417mowqip5ivp0.jpg

Harry Kane admits his long goal drought for Tottenham had left him "a bit moody" - but he was delighted to end it in the 4-1 Premier League win against Manchester City.

The England international had gone 748 minutes without a goal for Spurs before he fired home after Christian Eriksen's free-kick had struck the crossbar during the second half of Saturday's clash.

Kane - who netted 31 goals in all competitions last season - was relieved get back on the scoresheet but believes the emphatic victory proves that the performance of the team always takes precedent over personal form.

"There's been a lot of talk that I haven't scored yet but I'm a confident young man," he told BT Sport after the match. "But what a performance by us. I thought we stuck at it, it was a great goal by Eric [Dier] just before the break.

"You need a bit of luck, I had one cleared off the line midweek [against Arsenal]. I'm really delighted to get on the scoresheet but more importantly it was a great win against a team top of the table.

"As a striker you want to be scoring, you get a bit moody, but I'm doing my best for the team, there's a bigger picture than me. But hopefully I can build on this and the team can build on this."

Kane also backed Tottenham's hopes of a top four finish and insists Mauricio Pochettino's young squad should not be written off.

"The Champions League is always our aim at the start of the season, we've got so much energy and belief in that team," he added. "Some people write us off, say we need experience, but we're really excited, but we can't get too carried away.

"We've got two tough games coming up in the Europa League and against Swansea."

Pochettino defends officials after 'brilliant' Tottenham beat Manchester City

Mauricio Pochettino defended the officiating during Tottenham's 4-1 thrashing of Manchester City on Saturday after the hosts were given two goals that looked to be offside.

Spurs recovered from Kevin De Bruyne's opener to record an emphatic victory, though two major decisions went against the Premier League leaders at White Hart Lane.

Kyle Walker was in an offside position in the build-up to Eric Dier's equaliser, while Harry Kane fired in Tottenham's third despite standing beyond the last man as Christian Eriksen hit a free-kick against the crossbar."You know football, sometimes it's for you, sometimes against you," Pochettino said to BT Sport . "You need to always keep calm because sometimes the decision is not easy for the referee.

"Our performance was brilliant, we played against a big, big side and I'm very pleased, I congratulate my players. It's a big happiness for the supporters after our defeat to Arsenal."Kane's goal ended a run of 748 minutes without scoring this season and Pochettino is confident some pressure will be lifted from the England striker's shoulders.

"It was no easy chance but I think it was important for him to score to take off the pressure. But this is football," he said.Pochettino maintains the victory does not alter his pre-season targets for the club and he is confident his young squad has the potential to go a long way.

He added: "I think we need to be calm, nothing's changed from two or three weeks ago or the beginning of the season. Our challenge is to develop a young squad, the talent is massive but we need time."We go game by game. The most important thing is to keep our feet on the grass."

Kompany and Yaya Toure expected to miss Monchengladbach trip

    yaya-toure-premier-league-tottenham-v-manchester-city-260915_1gdf1tv6vm65i1tb5g30i52tem.jpg

Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany is likely to miss Wednesday's Champions League trip to Borussia Monchengladbach, while Yaya Toure is a major doubt.

Kompany was forced to sit out Saturday's 4-1 defeat to Tottenham due to a calf problem picked up in City's Champions League opening defeat to Juventus.

Ivory Coast international Toure was replaced during the Premier League clash at White Hart Lane with what was later confirmed as a hamstring injury and Manuel Pellegrini does not expect either to be available for Wednesday.

"Yaya had some problem in his hamstring," Pellegrini told reporters. "We don't know about the Champions League, we must wait until Monday to decide. We will see what the doctor says [about a scan]."

"I don't think so, we will see," he added when asked about whether Kompany would be fit.

"At the beginning he was fit to be at least on the bench but in the warm up he felt some problems in his calf. It was the calf problem from against Juventus, he has not recovered 100 per cent."

Willy Caballero endured a difficult game against Spurs but Pellegrini defended his decision to field the former Malaga man in place of Joe Hart, who has been nursing a knock.

"Joe had a problem with his back during the week and couldn't just work one day this week, so I decided Willy must play," the Chilean explained. "Joe for me was not 100 per cent, I play Willy."

Mainz 0-3 Bayern Munich: Lewandowski scores 100th Bundesliga goal

    robertlewandowski-cropped_olshhftdrt261e79jbx59u718.jpg

Robert Lewandowski reached a century of Bundesliga goals to help Bayern Munich secure their best start to a league season by comfortably beating Mainz 3-0 at the Coface Arena.

In his 168th league appearance, the Poland international picked up where he left off following his record-breaking five-goal haul in the 5-1 thrashing of Wolfsburg on Tuesday by netting a second-half double.

Thomas Muller had earlier missed a first-half penalty before Lewandowski broke the deadlock and reached his milestone with a 51st minute header. He is the fastest non-German player to reach 100 league goals.

Lewandowski then rounded off a neat move 12 minutes later for his seventh goal in two matches. Coman added a third when he arrived at the far post to steer home Douglas Costa's cross, as Bayern made it seven wins from seven to extend their 100 per cent record at the top of the table. The Bundesliga champions had won their previous six meetings with Mainz and were very much on the front foot in the opening stages.

And Muller was handed the perfect opportunity to put Bayern ahead from the penalty spot after 20 minutes.

Coman collected a wonderful cross-field pass and cut into the area from the wing, before being brought down by a desperate challenge from Pablo de Blasis.Muller seemed to hesitate as he stepped up to take the resulting spot-kick and cleared the crossbar with his poor effort.

Mainz struggled to really gain a foothold in the contest, though they did have a good chance of their own to take the lead seven minutes later when Yoshinori Muto pulled a drilled shot just wide of the near post.

The visitors, though, continued to dominate and Costa embarked on a strong run towards the penalty area before letting fly with a powerful 25-yard effort that needed goalkeeper Loris Karius to push it over.

The deadlock was finally broken six minutes after the restart when Lewandowski pulled away from his marker to meet Coman's cross and plant his header perfectly beyond the reach of Karius.

Lewandowski doubled his tally soon after when some crisp and incisive play saw him latch onto a throughball from substitute Arturo Vidal before rounding Karius and sliding home.

Bayern put the game beyond any doubt when some good work from Costa down the left led to him pulling the ball across the area for Coman to latch onto and make it 3-0.Mainz were very much beaten by that point, although they went close to grabbing a consolation when Christian Clemens rattled the crossbar from a tight angle.

Lewandowski saw a hat-trick chance go begging when he pounced on an error by the Mainz defence, who just about recovered to prevent the Pole from netting again after a neat one-two with Xabi Alonso.

Liverpool 3-2 Aston Villa: Sturridge double eases pressure on Rodgers

    1985242_heroa.jpg

Liverpool eased the pressure on manager Brendan Rodgers as Daniel Sturridge scored twice in an action-packed 3-2 win over Aston Villa at Anfield.

The Northern Irishman has seen his position come under scrutiny after a difficult start to the season and Liverpool continued to show defensive frailties as Sturridge and Philippe Coutinho inspired a first Premier League win in five outings.

Danny Ings was given the nod alongside Sturridge in the absence of injured striker Christian Benteke, but it was another former Villa man in James Milner who gave Rodgers the perfect start when he opened the scoring with his first competitive Liverpool goal 66 seconds in.

The hosts initially failed to build on their momentum, but Sturridge's first goal since returning from injury doubled the advantage on the hour and sparked a flurry of drama as Rudy Gestede inspired a fightback seven minutes later when he pulled one back.

Sturridge was again on hand to restore the two-goal cushion, finishing a delightful one-two with Coutinho, although Gestede's aerial prowess continued to pose problems as he reduced the arrears to ensure a nervy finale for Liverpool.

But Rodgers' men held on to keep Tim Sherwood and Villa winless in the league since the opening day.

Coming into the game at the end of week in which speculation over his future has hit the headlines, Rodgers could scarcely have hoped for a better start than Milner'ssecond-minute goal – the quickest of the Premier League season so far.

The vice-captain controlled a Coutinho pass and fired left-footed beyond Brad Guzan as the opening stages belonged to a buoyant Liverpool side clearly enthused by Milner's early strike.

Gestede - in for the injured Gabriel Agbonlahor - proved a threat throughout and shot wide after a careless clearance from Emre Can prior to the half-hour mark, while a deflection denied Ashley Westwood a strike on target prior to the interval amid questionable Liverpool defending.

For all their dominance, Rodgers's men were made to sweat late in the half, but began the second period on the front foot with Milner forcing a save from Guzan.

Nathaniel Clyne saw his follow-up attempt thwarted before Coutinho's free-kick from the edge of the box was collected well by Guzan.

Rodgers's side had their second when Sturridgeconjured a stunning strike past Guzan with the outside of his boot after clever interplay with the impressive Milner.

The England striker made his return from long-term injury problems in the draw against Norwich City last weekend and scored his first goal since March before Gestede's close-range strike curtailed Liverpool momentum.

The danger was short-lived for the hosts, however, as Sturridge had his second a minute later - collecting a neat Coutinho backheel before finishing past Guzan - although Liverpool again made life difficult as Gestede produced a powerful header to give Villa hope.

Defensive problems aside, Liverpool's first home win over Villa since 2010 will build confidence at Anfield, as will a return to the scoresheet for Sturridge, who almost had a hat-trick late on when he shot just wide after linking with Ings.

Barcelona 2-1 Las Palmas: Messi injury overshadows Suarez double

    1984532_heroa.jpg

Luis Suarez's double helped Barcelona to a 2-1 win over Las Palmas in Saturday's La Liga encounter at Camp Nou as Lionel Messi limped off with a knee injury.

The home side were dealt an early blow when Messi was forced to leave the pitch in the 10th minute, however Suarez gave them reasons to celebrate midway thought the half when he headed home a cross from Sergi Roberto.

Las Palmas looked dangerous a number of times via former Barcelona B striker Sergio Araujo, but the Argentine was unfortunate not to add his name to the scoresheet.

And Suarez made it two after the break following some fine work from Munir, before Neymar blasted a penalty over the crossbar.

Jonathan Viera's deflected effort put Barca under late pressure, but they held firm to provide a good response to Wednesday's 4-1 hammering at Celta Vigo.

Barcelona looked like opening the scoring after just four minutes of play when Messi's sublime first touch sent him clear, but a last-ditch tackle from Pedro Bigas was just enough to keep the Argentine's attempt out.<

There was more bad news for the Catalans shortly after as Messi was forced to leave the pitch with an injury to his left knee following Bigas' tackle.

Marc-Andre ter Stegen was called into action in the 20th minute after Araujo gained a yard on Gerard Pique before trying his luck from inside the area, but the Barca goalkeeper did well to save at his near post.

The hosts took the lead in the 25th minute after a superb attack down the right allowed Roberto swing in a dangerous cross for Suarez and the Uruguay international beat his marker to the ball, heading home to make it 1-0.

Barcelona should have doubled their lead shortly after when Suarez and Neymar charged toward the visitors' goal, but the former Liverpool man's pass toward the Brazilian lacked accuracy and Bigas got back in time to clear the danger.

Las Palmas looked dangerous on the counterattack, though, and once more threatened 10 minutes before the break. Viera unleashed a stunning long-range striker after cutting inside from the left, only for Ter Stegen to tip the ball over the crossbar.

Luis Enrique's men continued to charge forward in search for a second goal after the break and were rewarded for their positive approach in the 54th minute. Munir sent in a fine low cross from the right toward Sergio Busquets, who dummied it to allow Suarez to slam into the top corner.

Araujo again looked dangerous for the away side just minutes later, but his powerful left-footed strike was palmed away by Ter Stegen.

Neymar seemed desperate to add his name to the score sheet, but the Brazilian was denied by Javi Varas after escaping the offside trap before blazing over from the spot after Antolin Alcaraz handled the ball inside his own area.

Sloppy play from Javier Mascherano in the closing stages of the encounter then allowed Nabil El Zhar to set up Viera and the 25-year-old saw his deflected shot beat Ter Stegen, but it was too little too late.
