Juventus 3-1 Bologna: Khedira opens Bianconeri account

    2029722_heroa.jpg

Sami Khedira scored his first goal for Juventus as they cruised to a 3-1 win over Bologna.

The visitors took a shock early lead through Anthony Mounier, but posed virtually no attacking threat from that point onwards. Alvaro Morata headed in an equaliser prior to half-time and won a penalty after the break, which was converted by Paulo Dybala. The forward then set up his former Real Madrid team-mate Khedira, who headed home on his league debut.

It was a vital win for Massimiliano Allegri's men, who had won only one of their opening six Serie A games having claimed the title for four straight seasons, while Bologna have lost six of their seven matches.

The opener came in the fifth minute when Adam Masina sent in a cross from deep with his left foot and Mounier beat the offside trap to fire a powerful volley in at goal. The shot was straight at Gianluigi Buffon, but he was unable to prevent the ball from crossing the line.

Juve had lined up with an unchanged team after their Champions League win over Sevilla and they attempted to respond when a fast-paced move culminated in Dybala finding Morata, who was just off target with a left-foot snapshot.

Paul Pogba forced Antonio Mirante into a save before the equaliser arrived in the 33rd minute. Khedira made ground down the right, his cross deflected invitingly into the path of Morata and the striker converted with an easy close-range header - his first league goal of the campaign.

Morata had a golden opportunity to net a second in the opening minute of the second half, but he poorly sliced his shot wide after being set up by Juan Cuadrado.

The former Real Madrid striker was involved again moments later as he won a penalty after he was hauled down by Alex Ferrari in the box, with referee Domenico Celi pointing to the spot despite furious protests from the visitors.

It was his strike partner Dybala who stepped up and confidently sent Mirante the wrong way with his penalty.Juve were in total control and Morata forced Mirante to tip his shot over the bar having found space in the box following Khedira's pass.

The third goal was coming and it duly arrived after 63 minutes. Morata delivered an accurate delivery from the left channel and Khedira planted a firm header back across goal and into the corner.

Pogba shot just over with a late free-kick attempt as Bologna were unable to provide anything by way of a response. Indeed, the early goal was their only shot on target.

    Liverpool sack Rodgers

    1973842_heroa.jpg

Liverpool have confirmed that Brendan Rodgers has been sacked as manager of the club just hours after taking charge of Sunday's 1-1 draw in the Merseyside derby.

The 42-year-old, who joined Anfield in 2012, nearly guided Liverpool to the Premier League title in his second season at the club but eventually finished two points behind champions Manchester City.

Luis Suarez's departure and Daniel Sturridge's injury problems contributed to Liverpool's inconsistent form as they finished in sixth place last term, and Rodgers has now left Anfield after the team registered just three wins from their opening eight games.

Jurgen Klopp, who left Borussia Dortmund at the end of last season, is the early frontrunner to replace Rodgers, while Carlo Ancelotti is also being considered.

“We would like to place on record our sincere thanks to Brendan Rodgers for the significant contribution he has made to the club and express our gratitude for his hard work and commitment,” read a joint Fenway Sports Group statement from principal owner John W Henry, chairman Tom Werner and president Mike Gordon.

“All of us have experienced some wonderful moments with Brendan as manager and we are confident he will enjoy a long career in the game.

“Although this has been a difficult decision, we believe it provides us with the best opportunity for success on the pitch. Ambition and winning are at the heart of what we want to bring to Liverpool and we believe this change gives us the best opportunity to deliver it.

“The search for a new manager is underway and we hope to make an appointment in a decisive and timely manner.”

Rodgers returned Liverpool to the Champions League but endured a disappointing 2014-15 campaign, crashing out in the group stages of the competition, losing to Aston Villa in the FA Cup semi-final and finishing sixth in the Premier League.

Liverpool once again struggled this term, despite spending around £70 million in the summer, only winning one of their last six league games, against Villa, drawing against Bordeaux and Sion in the Europa League and being taken to penalties by Carlisle in the League Cup.

Carragher backs Klopp over Ancelotti to take Liverpool job

    1460532_heroa.jpg

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has backed Jurgen Klopp to replace Brendan Rodgers as the club's new manager and believes he would be a better appointment than Carlo Ancelotti.

FSG moved to remove Rodgers from his position in a statement released on Sunday evening, with the former Swansea City boss sacked after just eight games of the 2015-16 Premier League campaign.

And while Carragher appreciates Ancelotti's impressive CV, he believes that ex-Dortmund manager Klopp, who is currently out of work having left the Bundesliga side in the summer, is the ideal candidate.

He told Sky Sports: "If it was me, I'd go for Klopp ahead of Ancelotti. He's got more to prove. Liverpool is not an easy job now. Ancelotti's a great manager of course but he's gone to clubs where you'd expect to win trophies.

"It's a difficult job now at Liverpool, getting back into the top four, forget talking about the title. I think it needs someone with that energy and drive to get Liverpool back where they want to be. I think Jurgen Klopp's that man."

Carragher also criticised FSG's decision to sack Rodgers, questioning the timing of the move after just eight games of the Premier League season.

He added: "It hasn't gone well for him [Rodgers] this season. He needed to make a good start to this season. Because he was maybe fortunate in terms of staying on at the end of last season. A lot of his staff moved on, new staff came in. He spent £70m to £80m, then seven games later Liverpool are changing a manager.

"That's what I don't like about that. Just do it in the summer if that's the situation. The owners of the football club's track record for making decisions for Liverpool FC over the last two or three years has not been good enough. It's miles off."

Ibrahimovic becomes PSG's all time top goalscorer

    2031102_heroa.jpg

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has become Paris Saint-Germain's all-time top goalscorer after netting a double against Marseille.

The Sweden international was on target in Sunday's Ligue 1 clash to overtake club legend Pauleta as the record holder. Both goals were penalties, as he scored two within three minutes to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 half-time advantage.

Ibrahimovic, who celebrated his 34th birthday on Saturday, scored his 109th and 110th goal for PSG, taking his place at the top of PSG's charts inside just three and a half years.

Former Portugal star Pauleta achieved his record over a five-year spell, but failed to lead the capital club to a Ligue 1 title, whereas Ibrahimovic has been pivotal as the Parisians have won three championships during his time.

    Wenger 'sad' over Rodgers sacking

    brendanrodgers-cropped_snlrx0ciydkl12y1tyjiro8sw.jpg

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has revealed his sadness at Liverpool's decision to sack manager Brendan Rodgers.

The former Swansea coach was given his marching orders after the 1-1 Merseyside derby draw against Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday.

Wenger was asked about Rodgers' axing after his own side had recorded an impressive 3-0 victory over Manchester United and he expressed disappointment at the Anfield club's decision.

"I am always sad when this happens because I think Rodgers is a quality manager," said the Frenchman.

"He was very unlucky not to win the Premier League. He was the closest to the championship of all their managers who have been working for the club.

"But that is the way it goes now and I wish him good luck. I am sure he will find a job again."

Ex-Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti and former Borussia Dortmund head coach Jurgen Klopp are the early favourites to replace Rodgers.

Atletico Madrid 1-1 Real Madrid: Late Vietto goal denies Benitez’s men

    2031502_heroa.jpg

Luciano Vietto's first goal for Atletico Madrid secured a 1-1 derby draw seven minutes from time and stopped Real Madrid from moving to the top of La Liga.

Karim Benzema headed his seventh goal in eight appearances this season in the ninth minute and looked to have settled a typically feisty tussle at the Vicente Calderon, where his France international team-mate Antoine Griezmann had a first-half penalty saved for the hosts.

Griezmann partly atoned for that error by having a hand in the equaliser – making enough of a nuisance of himself at the near post for Jackson Martinez's low cross to squirm beyond goalkeeper Keylor Navas for his fellow substitute Vietto to convert from close range.

Vietto's former club Villarreal lost 1-0 to Levante earlier on Sunday, presenting the opportunity for Real to take top spot.

But Rafael Benitez's team could not get over the line and lie a point off the pace in

Cristiano Ronaldo headed wide early on from Luca Modric's left-wing cross but it was from the opposite flank that Real took the lead.

Dani Carvajal surged down the wing to supply an excellent cross that Benzema, who had scored just twice in 20 previous appearances against Atleti, planted emphatically past Jan Oblak.

Atleti's response was strong, with a fired-up Angel Correa to the fore.

Making his first Liga start, the midfielder collected an one-two from Oliver Torres to arrow a shot past the post from the right-hand side of the box before sending a thunderous drive wide from 30 yards.

Some ragged Real defending gifted Atleti a golden opportunity to equalise from the spot in the 20th minute – Sergio Ramos briefly looked to have retrieved the situation but took a heavy touch and clattered through Tiago.
But Griezmann's well-struck effort was at a favourable height for Navas, who sprung to his left and pushed the ball to safety.

A well-marshalled Ronaldo swivelled to shoot over after the half-hour mark, while a robust challenge on Carvajal from Oliver Torres forced Real to bring Alvaro Arbeloa on before the break.

Fernando Torres was played in by Correa five minutes into the second period but pulled an angled shot across the face of goal.

The former Liverpool striker then had an attempt blocked before making way for Jackson Martinez in the 64th minute.

A succession of fouls by both teams had badly interrupted the flow of the game by this point, with Real duo Raphael Varane and Casemiro booked either side of Juanfran to make it three yellow cards in as many minutes.

Gareth Bale followed Martinez into the Calderon cauldron, replacing Isco for his first Real action since suffering a calf injury against Shakhtar Donetsk last month.

Navas saved from Martinez in the 74th minute when Vietto found a Real body with his initial shot, while an unusually sporadic display from Ronaldo continued when he cut onto his left foot to find the side netting.

Vietto appeared crestfallen when he wasted a good headed chance in the 81st minute but the Argentine made amends three minutes later – his compatriot Diego Simeone leading the boisterous celebrations from the dugout before Martinez was denied by Navas as the hosts almost snatched another famous triumph.
