    Cech: Chelsea still title favourites

    petr-cech_1caqtdfm7b94q1ubmk2q6qes2h.jpg

Former Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech says he is surprised by the Blues' poor start to the season, but insists they are still favourites to win the title.

The reigning Premier League champions have had a disastrous start to the campaign and sit 16th in the table, having won twice from their opening eight games.

Jose Mourinho has admitted the run of form is the worst period of his career, but has maintained he will not resign from his role.

And Cech, who left the club in the summer to join Arsenal, is confident the Stamford Bridge outfit will get out of the situation and challenge for the title.

"Their form surprises me because Chelsea are among the best in the Premier League," he told iDNES.

"I am no longer there, so it is hard for me to evaluate what is going on. Anyway, the season is long and Chelsea are still favourites in my eyes."

However, the Czech Republic international is happy with his new side's current form and still feels his they can put up a fight to win the league this term too.

"After the first defeat for us against West Ham, everyone said that we can never win anything big. Now we are again being compared to the most famous Arsenal, who didn't lose during one season.

"I just know that we have a team that can fight for the title until last round."

"Twice Arsene Wenger has decided that David Ospina play in the Champions League over me and I have to respect that. In such a big team and in such a long season it is not possible for a man to play all the time, though I obviously wanted to."

Klopp denies talks with Bayern Munich

    pep-guardiola-jurgen-klopp-cropped_6ep4hhf7utl61pn42vuri20sy.jpg

New Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has denied holding talks with Bayern Munich prior to his move to Anfield.

The former Borussia Dortmund head coach held his first Liverpool press conference on Friday after signing a three-year deal to succeed Brendan Rodgers, who was sacked following the derby draw with Everton.

Speculation had arisen that Klopp had been sounded out to replace Pep Guardiola at Bayern, with the former Barcelona boss now in the final year of his contract at the Allianz Arena.

Klopp, however, insists he only ever held talks with Liverpool despite receiving offers from elsewhere, telling Sky in Germany: "I don't know anything about that [the Bayern rumours] and this is not relevant to me.

"Bayern are a fantastic club but I don't go on holidays and wait for someone to call me. I have done many things that I found interesting and exciting and I have used the time to meet loads of great people and I would have met many more.

"I never had a certain career plan and I can assure you that I never talked to Bayern Munich. I also hope that Guardiola will stay there for another 10 years.

"I didn't want to coach many clubs. Of course I had concrete offers, but Liverpool is the only club I have actually spoken to."

Klopp impressed a number of former Liverpool favourites with his opening press conference, including Jamie Carragher and Kenny Dalglish, and the 48-year-old hopes to transmit the same sense of positivity to his players.

"Normally, I don't think about press conferences and go there and just say what has to be said," he explained. "This time I had to think about it a little bit, but I think it went well.

"During the press conference I tried to make clear that the right expectations are able to change everything. If you have the right expectation everything will fall into place. Having the wrong one can prohibit this.

"There is a lot of pressure on Liverpool and I am aware of that difficulty. A very important reason why I have taken this job is because I am bent on taking this challenge and because I am keen on seeing what can be done and what cannot.

"I also fancied working abroad and I was up for a change. I am really, really happy here.

"There won't be any problem with the players as there are also loads of foreign players. My English is probably as bad as theirs so they will understand me a lot easier.

"And also, as I am not a native speaker, I won't just start talking random stuff, because I will have to make an effort in order to be understood. It is not important to be fluent in a language. It is important to say the right words at the right time."

Klopp described himself as "the Normal One" on Friday and the ex-Mainz boss was eager to explain his meaning.

"There will be many people back in Germany questioning that sentence … But yes, that is how I am and it is quite important to me," Klopp said.

"Of course, the things at this club haven't been too catastrophic so far. The main thing is that the last years in total haven't been working out too well, even before Brendan Rodgers. And it was not easy for my colleagues here to show that they are on a good way. This is why the thirst for a change was so big and this is why they had to take the measurements they did.

"But this doesn't mean that I will arrive here and change everything in the first season saying from now on we will do it as we [Klopp and his assistants] have done it so far.

"I am so keen on listening to the people here, getting to know them and getting used to everything. And after that I will ideally press the right buttons. I have already said that I don't see myself as almighty. I am far away from being 'the Special One'."

Rooney's son gets his hands on Golden Boot

    2056722_heroa.jpg

Wayne Rooney has lifted his fair share of trophies since joining Manchester United in 2004 and his son is now getting in on the act.

After becoming England's all-time top scorer with 50 goals, the 29-year-old was awarded with a specially made 24-carat golden boot to commemorate his achievement.

But after taking it home from Wembley, it looks like Rooney junior, Kai, was keen to show off the prize. Those Rooneys, eh? It must be in their genes.

Man City star Silva to join Aguero on the sidelines for a month

    2056472_heroa.jpg

Manchester City’s injury woes have increased with the news that David Silva is facing a month on the sidelines, Goal can confirm.

The 29-year-old damaged ankle ligaments during Spain's Euro 2016 qualifying victory over Luxembourg on Friday night.

Silva failed to shake off an injury following a challenge from Lars Krogh Gerson and was withdrawn after just 11 minutes of the 4-0 win, a victory which ensured the reigning European champions a place at next summer’s finals in France.

A statement from the Spanish Football Federation confirmed on Friday that Silva would miss Monday’s final qualifier against Ukraine, but Goal understands that following initial scans Manchester City have been informed that the extent of the damage is likely to rule the playmaker out for up to a month.

The Premier League leaders were rocked on Thursday at the news that Sergio Aguero suffered a hamstring injury, one that left him in tears according to his club and international team-mate Nicolas Otamendi, during Argentina’s 2-0 defeat against Ecuador.

The Argentina Football Association confirmed on Friday that Aguero suffered a grade two tear that could keep him out for up to six weeks, meaning both he and Silva are liable to miss the upcoming Manchester derby and potentially the crucial Champions League double header against Sevilla.

Klopp agent: No contact before Rodgers sacking

    jurgen-klopp-liverpool_1laz0devhz58i1llp091v0bsgi.png

Jurgen Klopp 's agent has insisted contact from Liverpool was only made following the dismissal of Brendan Rodgers , despite Reds chairman Tom Werner's admission that they had admired the German for "a long time".

Rodgers was sacked last Sunday after the 1-1 Merseyside derby draw at Everton, with Klopp named as his replacement four days later.

Despite the short timeframe, Klopp's representative Marc Kosicke is adamant Liverpool - and owners Fenway Sports Group - did not go behind Rodgers' back.

"The first call from Liverpool came after the dismissal as coach of Rodgers", Kosicke told Bild .

"Before Liverpool there were naturally quite a few inquiries. But Jurgen always asked me not to take it any further."

Klopp enjoyed a hugely successful seven years at Dortmund, during which he won two Bundesliga titles and the DFB-Pokal.

That record - and his charismatic persona - apparently meant he was always on Werner's radar.

And although he refused to confirm Kosicke's version of events, Werner previously confirmed that he was a long-term admirer of the former Borussia Dortmund coach.

Cazorla backs Del Bosque after Euro 2016 qualification

Santi Cazorla has voiced his support to Spain coach Vicente del Bosque , maintaining that he is the right man to lead them into Euro 2016 after sealing qualifiication on Friday.

Cazorla scored twice as the reigning European champions won 4-0 against Luxembourg to guarantee their spot in France with a game to spare, with Paco Alcacer netting the other two goals.

There were numerous calls for Del Bosque to step down when Spain limped out of the group stage of the 2014 World Cup and were then beaten by Slovakia last October, but Arsenal's midfield star says the entire national team is behind the 64-year-old.

"We're all very happy with Del Bosque and he has the confidence of the entire squad," he said.

"You have to credit what we've done. We've had a tough road. In a match, anyone can get the better of you.

"That Slovakia defeat was a tough day, but we knew we had to stick together and stay calm and that's what we've done.

"The failure in Brazil is forgotten now. We have to learn from our mistakes. We've got a new generation and we're thinking about the future."

Marc Bartra has also spoken highly of the national team coach, insisting he has helped him develop immensely .

    Low reveals Schweinsteiger fitness boost

    joachimlow_1snhfwptro5ac1tcdbfa33zu18.jpg

Joachim Low has revealed that Germany and Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger has handed the World Cup winners a late fitness boost and could be available for the match with Georgia.

Low is not planning on making any changes to his starting line-up, but the former Bayern Munich player could be available after a late training session.

"Bastian Schweinsteiger will take part in the final training session and then we will decide on his availability," the German head coach told a media conference.

The world champions were expected to secure their spot in France next year on Wednesday without Schweinsteiger, only to suffer a shock 1-0 defeat against the Republic of Ireland - a game characterised by a host of missed chances from Low's men.

A draw will still be enough against Georgia in Leipzig and Low is not anticipating any slip-ups this time.

"We need to improve the efficiency of our work," he told a press conference on Saturday.

"Currently we are not as deadly to our opponents as we have been previously. The players need to understand that when an opportunity comes their way it may be the last one they get in the game.

"We need to sharpen our focus.

"But despite the defeat against Ireland we are on the top of the table and everything lies in our own hands.

"I am convinced our approach is the right way. Apart from one situation [against Ireland] we did everything well. We just failed to capitalise on our many chances."

Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer is optimistic Germany will get the job done at the Red Bull Arena.

"We are confident. Of course we did not feel great after the Ireland defeat but we know how we can play. We know as well we will beat Georgia," said the Bayern Munich stopper.

Schneiderlin: I'll get used to Man United rotation

    morganschneiderlin-cropped_1ewrcpn42a3g41uafm94m3fw2a.jpg

Manchester United midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin is not concerned over the prospect of reduced playing time at Old Trafford, having been benched for the defeat to Arsenal.

The France international was an unused substitute in the 3-0 reverse at the Emirates Stadium and his absence was heavily felt as the hosts' dynamic play saw them score all three goals inside 20 minutes.

With competition from the likes of Michael Carrick and Bastian Schweinsteiger, Schneiderlin says he can cope with reduced playing time in comparison to his spell with former club Southampton.

"I have played a lot of matches. The coach made a lot of changes in attack and even in midfield and you have to get used to it," he told reporters before France's friendly with Denmark on Sunday.

"I used to play all the games with Southampton but things have changed. I happened to be on the bench, you have to take it philosophically."

Schneiderlin and United team-mate Anthony Martial played the final 27 minutes of France's 4-0 victory against Armenia on Thursday as Didier Deschamps' men continued their preparations for Euro 2016 on home soil.

Martial, 19, has scored three times since moving from Monaco in September and Schneiderlin backed the striker to stay grounded.

"He is the same player in Manchester as he is here, he has the same qualities," he added.

"This is someone who has a good head on his shoulders, he does not let it go to his head.

"He's always got the same good humour and the same desire to work."

:yes:Herrera: I am good enough to play for Spain

    ander-herrera-cropped_1npwjcdt8h8pd1nzys74vwldmm.jpg

Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera insists that he has the ability to play for Spain, and is determined to make the squad for Euro 2016.

The 26-year-old has represented his country at under-21 level, but is yet to win his first senior cap.

Herrera admits he faces tough competition for a place in midfield - with the likes of Andres Iniesta, Cesc Fabregas and David Silva also jostling for position - but he is confident that he can break into Vicente del Bosque's squad.

"Of course, I wish to make it into the national team," Herrera told MUTV.

"It's the next step for me. When you arrive at Manchester United, you are in the biggest club with the best supporters and maybe the most followed club in the world.

"Last season, I think I had a good season. The fans were happy with me and the manager as well. Of course, I can play well or I can play badly, but I always give my best and I think I am doing well enough to get into the national squad. It's my next step.

"I know we have, in Spain, maybe the best midfielders in the world right now but I think I have the quality to be in the national team. I will fight for it. I fought last season for that and I am trying to do it again. I think I have the quality to be in it and I am showing that.

"I think I am ready to help the team [at United], help my team-mates, and I am going to play wherever the manager wants me to play,. So I am doing the right things to get into the national team but, of course, the [international] coach will decide.

"Of course, it's the next dream, the next step for me. I know it's difficult but I will try to do my best to be involved in the European Championship."

Messi's reveals new boots in Barcelona

    lionelmessi-cropped_rel5p0eat68b1otf0oe5ctpkl.jpg

Lionel Messi’s new limited edition boots — named ‘Messi 10/10’ — went on sale on Saturday at the Adidas store in Barcelona, but only 89 people will be able to get their hands on a pair.

Adidas have made 100 pairs of the boots in total, one of which will go the Barcelona star himself.

The remaining pairs not going on sale have been given to the 10 players the Argentina international supported through his ‘Chosen by Messi’ campaign.

Among those selected were Manchester United’s James Wilson and Chelsea duo Kenedy and Jeremie Boga, who is currently on loan at French side Rennes.

Marcos Lopes, who left Manchester City for Monaco in the summer, is also one of those chosen.

The boots were designed to celebrate the "re-invention of the No.10 role" and will only be available in Messi’s exact size, which is a UK 8.5 (42 2/3 EUR).

Each pair comes with a premium leather tag featuring an embroidered serial number.

Goal brings you footage of the first few people to make it through the doors of the Adidas store and purchase the collectors’ edition boots.

    Messi: Dybala destined for greatness

    paulo-dybala-juventus-atletico-madrid_1bye5e4r2e1h1129dknu0g6cyw.jpg

Lionel Messi believes Juventus attacker Paulo Dybala is certain to become one of the world's best players.

Dybala received his first call-up for Argentina last month following some fine performances for Palermo last season and new club Juventus in the opening weeks of the 2015-16 campaign.

The 21-year-old remained on the bench for the full 90 minutes of his side's 2-0 World Cup qualification defeat to Ecuador on Friday, yet Messi - who is recovering from a knee injury - is confident his compatriot will become a household name in the future.

"Paulo is a great player and he has a bright future ahead of him," the Barcelona man told Tuttosport .

"I have no doubt that people will talk about him a lot over the next few years."

Dybala joined Juventus from Palermo in June 2015 for an initial transfer fee of €32 million - potentially rising to €40m - and has netted four goals in nine appearances for the reigning Serie A champions so far this term.

Ferguson explains the REAL message behind Jose Mourinho's seven-minute rant

    2003572_heroa.jpg

Sir Alex Ferguson believes the real reason behind Jose Mourinho’s now infamous seven-minute rant was to send a message to Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich.

The Premier League champions have registered just two wins from their opening eight games, and following their defeat at home to Southampton before the international break, Mourinho delivered a lengthy speech in which he insisted that he would not “run away from responsibilities”.

But the former Manchester United boss believes real motive behind Mourinho’s post-match interview was an attempt to establish whether he had the full backing of Chelsea’s hierarchy.

“I was studying Jose on that situation, when he had his press conference, and I was wondering whether he wanted the confidence of Roman Abramovich by saying that: ‘look, do you really believe in me? This is your opportunity to believe me’. I think he was putting a challenge out to Roman,” Ferguson told the Morning Joe show.

“Because I think at times there is a loneliness about managing a club like Chelsea. I had periods like that at United and you feel you’ve got to get the support from the people on top of you, the head of the organisation, and I think that’s what Jose was doing.

“I will say this, and I know him well, he will find a solution, because that’s what good managers do, they find the solution. For instance, when we lost the league, five times we lost it when we were second, the next year we won it. We created a solution to make sure it didn’t happen again. And I think he will do that."

When asked if he felt Mourinho could still guide Chelsea to a top-four place, Ferguson replied: “Yes, absolutely no question about that. He’ll find the solution because he’s a top manager. He’s a clever guy, and one thing I always noticed about his teams - they all try for him, you don’t have any shirkers in his teams. And that epitomises his way of managing.”

Azerbaijan 1-3 Italy: Conte's men through to Euro 2016 after comfortable win

    stephan-el-shaarawy-azerbaijan-italy_x8hj8czwl2h51iko1h5emqnny.jpg

Former European champions Italy made certain of their place at Euro 2016 with a 3-1 win over Group H rivals Azerbaijan at the Tofiq Bahramov Stadium on Saturday.

The group leaders needed one win from their final two qualifiers and goals from Eder, Stephan El Shaarawy and Matteo Darmian ensured they go into Tuesday's qualification finale with Norway assured of their spot in France next year.

Antonio Conte - without Domenico Berardi, Andrea Pirlo and Lorenzo Insigne due to injury - saw his side lead early on courtesy of Eder's second international goal as he finished off a Pirlo-esque pass from Marco Verratti.

Dima Nazarov levelled for Robert Prosinecki's Azerbaijan, who had demonstrated solidity in qualification with three straight draws, but El Shaarawy put Italy back in front before half-time.

Italy's bold formation resembled a 4-2-4 at times, Antonio Candreva and El Shaarawy often occupying advanced roles on the flanks, but it was full-back Darmian who sealed the result with his first international goal shortly after the hour.

The visitors were spared a nervy finale as Badavi Huseynov was sent off for a challenge on Sebastian Giovinco, the visitors now able to focus on preparations for Conte's first competition in charge.

Italy were bright early on as Conte's attacking formation showed promise, but Rahid Amirguliyev had the first effort on target when his deflected shot was gathered by Gianluigi Buffon.

Amirguliyev's curled shot from distance also tested the Italy goalkeeper before Eder's 11th-minute opener.

The Sampdoria man timed his run to beat the offside trap and collect Verratti's expert pass before prodding the ball past Kamran Agayev to settle any Italian nerves.

Eder almost turned provider for strike partner Graziano Pelle soon after - Agayev equal to the Southampton forward's close-range effort - but Prosinecki's men remained disciplined in possession and got their reward on the half-hour.

After Giorgio Chiellini sliced an attempted clearance, Leonardo Bonucci could only head the ball back towards his own goal, with Nazarov able to coolly slide the ball past Buffon.

However, after El Shaarawy had twice gone close to restoring Italy's lead, the Monaco man tapped into an open net following Candreva's pass to give the visitors a half-time advantage.

Buoyed by El Shaarawy's finish prior to the break, Italy started the second half on the front foot and Eder came close to a second when he clipped an effort over the onrushing Agayev only for captain Rashad Sadygov to clear off the line.

Italy eventually got their third courtesy of defender Darmian 25 minutes from time as the Manchester United man shrugged Nazarov off the ball before producing a finish from distance.

Giovinco almost made the result more flattering for Italy when his free-kick hit the crossbar, having been hauled down by last man Huseynov, with Conte's men now looking to wrap up an unbeaten qualification campaign against Norway in Rome next week.

Kazakhstan 1-2 Netherlands: Wijnaldum and Sneijder keep play-off hopes alive

    2059482_heroa.jpg

Goals from Georginio Wijnaldum and Wesley Sneijder gave Netherlands a 2-1 win over Kazakhstan and kept their hopes of Euro 2016 qualification alive.

Oranje were in desperate need of three points to maintain their bid for a play-off spot in Group A and were rarely threatened in a solid display.

Impressive debutant Anwar El Ghazi set up Wijnaldum for the opener after 33 minutes and Sneijder added a wonderfully-worked second to boost under-fire coach Danny Blind. The hosts scored with virtually the last kick of the match through Islambek Kuat but it proved to be nothing more than a consolation. It was also a night of celebration for Robin van Persie who was introduced late on to win his 100th cap for his country.

El Ghazi threatened first for the Dutch after seven minutes, as he cut inside from the right before unleashing a left-footed shot that failed to trouble Kazakhstan goalkeeper Stas Pokatilov.

The Ajax winger got another chance shortly after following a sublime cross from Memphis Depay, but aimed his header from five yards out wide of the target.
Wijnaldum came close to breaking the deadlock in the 27th minute after a fine cross from El Ghazi but the Newcastle man’s header went over the crossbar.

Depay should have opened the scoring just minutes later following a sublime through ball from Daley Blind, but the winger shot wide after ignoring the unmarked Klaas-Jan Huntelaar to his right.

Danny Blind’s men did take the lead shortly after the half-hour mark, though. El Ghazi set up Wijnaldum with a clever lay-off and the midfielder found the net with a low left-footed shot.

El Ghazi should have capped a fine first Netherlands outing with a goal in the dying seconds of the opening period after another superb cross from Depay, but his timing let him down as he volleyed it wide for a goal-kick.

Netherlands made a superb start to the second half and doubled their lead in the 50th minute. Huntelaar set up Sneijder after a fine team move and the Galatasaray star hammered home from a narrow angle.

El Ghazi nearly made it three after some good work from Virgil van Dijk minutes later, but his attempt was cleared off the line.Wijnaldum got the chance to double his tally midway through the second half but blasted his shot from a narrow angle over the crossbar.

Timur Dosmagambetov shot wide from inside the area in the 67th minute as Kazakhstan finally threatened. Yuri Logvinenko then nodded wide of a gaping goal shortly afterwards.

They did halve the deficit deep into injury-time as Kuat turned home Sergei Khizhnichenko's header back across the face of goal but there was no time for an equaliser.

Bosnia-Herzegovina 2-0 Wales: Coleman's men end 57-year finals drought despite defeat

    2060262_heroa.jpg

Wales qualified for Euro 2016 despite suffering a 2-0 defeat to Bosnia-Herzegovina at the Stadion Bilino Polje.

Chris Coleman's side would have secured their place in France with a point, but Israel's loss to Cyprus secured progression from Group B regardless, as well as moving Bosnia third in the pool.

Bosnia set about their task immediately and dominated possession from the early exchanges, though Edin Visca was unable to convert their first, and best, opening of the first half.

Wales threatened on the break but were unable to take the chances they forged, and it proved costly as substitute Filip Djuric headed Bosnia ahead with less than 20 minutes remaining.

Bosnia then made sure that their destiny was in their own hands going into their final fixture against Cyprus as Vedad Ibisevic turned home Djuric's shot at the back post in the final minute of normal time.

With three points crucial to the ambitions of Bosnia, the game began in an open manner with Wales looking to play on the counter-attack.

A slip from Ben Davies gifted the hosts the opening chance with nine minutes played as Miralem Pjanic seized possession and slid a neat pass through to Visca, who dragged his shot from the right-hand side of the box narrowly wide of the far post.

As Bosnia assumed control of possession, Aaron Ramsey almost caught Asmir Begovic out of position with an ambitious 35-yard free-kick that flew narrowly wide of the target four minutes later.

The hosts were finding it difficult to break down Wales' five-man defence and, six minutes later, Begovic became the first keeper to be forced into a save, but Bale's skidding set-piece effort required little movement to deny.

In the last action of the first half, Hal Robson-Kanu released Ramsey in behind the defence, but the Arsenal man dallied on the ball and Neil Taylor was unable to slide home as Begovic smothered it.

Gaps continued to show in the Bosnia defence and one such opening presented Bale with a great chance to open the scoring 11 minutes after the restart. After being released by Joe Ledley, though, he skewed a wild shot wide of the near post.

It proved a costly miss in the 71st minute as Bosnia finally broke the deadlock.

Ibisevic stopped Ashley Williams from getting his head to Pjanic's free-kick from deep, and substitute Djuric looped a header beyond Wayne Hennessey and into the back of the net.

Ramsey missed a chance to draw Wales level and Mehmed Bazdarevic's men rounded off the scoring in the 90th minute as Ibisevic was in the right place at the right time to tap home from Djuric's cross-goal shot following a corner.

Although Wales place in France was secured despite the defeat, they slipped to second as Belgium triumphed over Andorra 4-1. Bosnia, meanwhile, just need to match or better Israel’s result in their final outing against Cyprus.

Portugal can win Euro 2016 - Fernando Santos

Portugal head coach Fernando Santos believes his side have the quality to win Euro 2016.

The former Greece boss replaced Paulo Bento at the helm after Portugal lost their opening European Championship qualifier against Albania.

However, six consecutive competitive wins under Santos have turned things around and the country's place at next year's tournament in France was confirmed with a 1-0 victory over Denmark on Thursday.

While the 61-year-old does not consider his team to be among the favourites to lift the trophy, he feels they can certainly challenge for the title.

"Some people say I'm crazy because I say that we are not favourites as well as saying that we have the quality to win," Santos said.

"There are many candidates. Portugal has the objective to go to France, win games and win the European Championships.

"When I arrived everything was difficult - it was hard to get third place. Now, everything is great.

"This team is capable but there are things to improve. If we maintain what we have been doing and improve these aspects, not being the favourites, we are one of the candidates.

"I believe it is possible. When I arrived I wrote on the board for the players to read: first goal, qualify for France as first in the group; second goal, get to France and fight for victory."

Portugal, who cannot be caught at the top of Group I, round off their qualifying campaign against Serbia on Sunday.

Blind: Netherlands have about 15 injuries now

Netherlands coach Danny Blind has voiced his frustration with his side's ongoing physical problems in the wake of their 2-1 Euro 2016 qualification win over Kazakhstan on Saturday.

The Dutch were without the likes of Arjen Robben, Kevin Strootman, Stefan de Vrij and Quincy Promes among others due to injury heading into the game and saw goalkeepers Jasper Cillessen and Tim Krul pick up knocks in Astana.

"It looks like nothing normal happens any more. This is getting extreme now," Blind told NOS."First there was Jasper's injury when we were warming up and then later on Tim got injured as well. It looks like a bad injury.

"We are missing about 15 players now. But I have seen players getting injured all over the globe in qualifiers."

Blind gave Kenny Tete, Virgil van Dijk, Anwar El Ghazi and Jeroen Zoet their international debuts in Saturday's Group A encounter and he was impressed with the performances of the Southampton defender and the Ajax full-back.

"Van Dijk put in a fantastic performance at the back. And Tete did a fine job as well. They are in fine form and I never had any doubts about them."We were in control for 60 minutes, but forgot to add a third goal. "We struggled a bit from there on because of their opportunistic style of play."

Saturday's victory kept Netherlands' chances of reaching Euro 2016 alive with just one more game to go.Blind's men currently sit third in their group with 13 points from nine games, but will drop to fourth place again if Turkey either draw or beat Czech Republic later on Saturday.

The Dutch meet Czech Republic on October 13, with Kenneth Vereer in their squad to replace Krul, while Turkey take on Iceland.

Andorra 1-4 Belgium: Hazard and Co. smash minnows to reach Euros

    2060112_heroa.jpg

Kevin De Bruyne and Eden Hazard were among the goalscorers as Belgium thrashed Andorra 4-1 on Saturday to qualify for Euro 2016.

Radja Nainggolan's deflected effort gave Marc Wilmots' men the lead, before De Bruyne struck with a stunning free kick just before half-time.

Alarm bells were briefly ringing after the break when Andorra's record goalscorer Ildefons Lima netted a penalty, but Belgium quickly responded with a spot kick of their own, scored by stand-in captain Hazard.

Laurent Depoitre made it four with a close-range finish, before Hazard missed a chance to net his second penalty of the match as his effort was saved in the final stages.

After reaching the World Cup quarter-finals in 2014, Belgium will now play in the Euros for the first time in four tournaments as their international resurgence continues. It was the home side who threatened first when Jordi Rubio's effort deflected into the arms of away goalkeeper Simon Mignolet. The visitors were soon piling on the pressure, though, with Hazard drifting inside and smashing a left-footed effort narrowly wide.

In another opportunity, Dries Mertens dribbled infield at pace from the right and Ferran Pol did well to push his effort over the crossbar.

The breakthrough was coming for Belgium and it arrived through Nainggolan. The Roma midfielder picked up a pass from Jordan Lukaku outside the box and let fly, with his effort taking a wicked deflection off Marc Rebes on its way in.

Marcio Vieira fired a tame free kick straight at Mignolet for the hosts, while De Bruyne could only clip the outside of the post from close-range after being cleverly slipped through by Hazard.

But the Manchester City star found his range superbly moments later. After Hazard had won a free kick 25 yards from goal, De Bruyne dispatched a perfect effort in off the post.Depoitre then forced Pol to save sharply with a clever flick-on as Belgium went into half-time with a two-goal lead.

Andorra made a stunning impact five minutes into the second half, though, with Victor Moreira drawing a reckless foul by Jan Vertonghen in the box and Lima sending Mignolet the wrong way from the spot for his 10th international goal.

But the hosts shot themselves in the foot almost immediately when captain Oscar Sonejee foolishly jumped up to handle Mertens' corner and Hazard calmly rolled home the spot kick - his fifth goal in seven internationals. It was four for the visitors on 64 minutes. Mertens raced down the right and whipped in a perfect cross for Depoitre, who applied the finishing touch to mark his international debut with a goal.

Another handball in the penalty area - this time from Gabriel Riera as he attempted to block Vertonghen's header - gave Hazard another opportunity from the spot, but this time Pol got down to save what was a poor effort from the Chelsea man.
That was not enough to break Belgian spirits, though, as they celebrated having booked their ticket to France with their large travelling support after the final whistle.
