Varane out with thigh injury, Madrid confirm

    raphaelvarane-cropped_5w7ly3994gz21u71mo4alnszt.jpg

Real Madrid have confirmed that Raphael Varane suffered a thigh muscle injury during Wednesday's Champions League win over Shakhtar Donetsk.

The France international was replaced after 31 minutes of Madrid's 4-3 success in Ukraine after suffering discomfort.

And the club confirmed the 22-year-old would continue to be assessed, although he is unlikely to fit for Sunday's trip to Eibar.

"After tests carried out today on the player Raphael Varane at the Sanitas La Moraleja University Hospital, he has been diagnosed with a muscle injury in his right thigh," read a club statement.

"His recovery will continue to be assessed."

Varane has been ever-present for Rafael Benitez's side so far this season, playing in every minute for Madrid in Europe prior to the injury.

Luis Enrique wants January signings at Barcelona

    luisenrique-cropped_1scup1ewef8ft1fruh7yj15gz3.jpg

Luis Enrique has suggested Barcelona will look to be active in the January transfer window despite their excellent start to the 2015-16 season.

Barca followed up their 4-0 defeat of Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu, which left them four points clear at the top of La Liga, with a 6-1 thumping of Roma in the Champions League on Tuesday.

They will welcome summer signings Aleix Vidal and Arda Turan into the fold in the New Year when their FIFA-imposed transfer ban is lifted, but their coach is keen to do further business.

"I am always in favour of reinforcing the team," Luis Enrique told reporters ahead of Saturday's clash against Real Sociedad.

"We always need to improve – there are always things to be fine-tuned that we can get better at. This year you know that we lost players at the end of last season so there are differences with respect to last season.

"I am always in favour of improving things and we will talk about that when we reach the transfer window."

Barcelona completed a historic treble last season and are well placed in all competitions once again, but Luis Enrique has sought to cool talk of the significance of their recent form.

"Those games have served to get three points in the league and three points to ensure we finish top of our Champions League group - but not much more really," he insisted.

"We now need to carry on so we can keep winning points so that we can win the different tournaments and reach the finals – there is still a long way to go.

"We don't need to let our morale fall too much when things are not going well, neither do we need to get too excited when things are going as well as they are at the moment.

"There are still two-thirds of the season to go."

Vidal: Bayern Munich clearly stronger than Juventus

    arturo-vidal-bayern-munich_12jov5mm7ucre1i39k4s3zg1za.jpg

Arturo Vidal says that Bayern Munich are considerably stronger than former club Juventus, arguing that he now feels like he's surrounded by "the greatest players in the world".

The Chile international left Turin for Bavaria during the summer, with Pep Guardiola's men paying €37 million for the midfielder, who had played a key role in the Bianconeri winning four successive Italian titles.

Juve initially struggled to cope with the loss of Vidal, as well as Andrea Pirlo and Carlos Tevez, but have been climbing the Serie A standings in recent weeks and, on Wednesday, defeated Manchester City to seal their place in the last 16 of the Champions League.

Bayern, though, are also already through to the knockout stage, thanks to a resounding 4-0 defeat of Olympiacos, and are considered second-favourites behind reigning champions Barcelona to win this season's tournament.

Indeed, even though he played his part in helping Juve reach last year's final, Vidal feels that he is now part of a side better equipped to beat the best in Europe.

At the moment, Bayern Munich are definitely stronger than the Bianconeri, although they are still a great team," the 28-year-old is quoted as saying by Tuttomercatoweb.com.

"The greatest players in the world are here and I hope to help them.

"I'm very happy here. I'm part of an exceptional squad and I hope to win trophies here."

Teixeira reveals offers from Chelsea, Juventus and PSG

    alex-teixeira-cropped_8fw8xawrbpy71ne7yzqqihi01.jpg

Shakhtar Donetsk ace Alex Teixeira claims Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain are both looking to rival Chelsea for his signature - but says that his "dream" is to move to England.

The 25-year-old, who has scored 23 goals in as many games in all competitions so far this season, has been heavily linked with a potential move to Stamford Bridge to link up with compatriot and former Shakhtar team-mate Willian.

Teixeira has now revealed that the champions of France and Italy have now entered the running, with the Bianconeri particularly keen on taking him to Turin.

However, the Brazilian freely admits that he has his heart set on playing in the Premier League.

"It's my dream [to go to England]," Teixeira told Lance. "I've spoken to many people who have the desire to play in the Premier League, because I think it's the best in the world, more contested, and I want to have this challenge in my career.

"I'm glad to have received that proposal from Chelsea, they're a great club in Europe, but my manager will deal with that.

"What I've seen, and what my manager has said, is that Chelsea, Juventus and PSG made offers. But Chelsea and Juventus are deeper into negotiations.

"They're three big clubs. Wherever I go, I'll be happy."

Pogba could leave Juventus in July - agent

    2303562_heroa.jpg

The agent of Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba has hinted that the 22-year-old could move away from Serie A at the end of the 2015-16 season but "categorically" ruled out a January transfer.

Mino Raiola, who is also the agent of the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Mario Balotelli, indicated that the France international is focussed on life at Juventus at present but said that they will reassess his future at the end of July, following the European Championship in France.

"Paul is a lad who decides with his heart, and at the moment he's focused on Juventus. I can categorically rule out a move in January," the agent told Mediaset.

"In the future we'll see, we'll talk at the end of July."

Raiola also revealed that Pogba has made no concrete plans with Juventus beyond the 2015-16 season. He added: "Last summer he decided to stay another year at Juve, and he kept his word.

"We're not preoccupied with thoughts of his future, we're thinking about that."

The 22-year-old has been widely linked with a move to Barcelona, as well as Chelsea and Manchester City, and his representative was full of praise for the France midfielder's progress as a player.

"Pogba is no longer a surprise," he said. "He's not a youngster just being discovered. A player with his talent is known to everybody. There have been offers for him, and they're still there."

Tottenham no longer fear Chelsea, says Dier

    ericdier-cropped_zkpantv3ff221d2bguic1l4pg.jpg

Tottenham are a better side for last season's League Cup final defeat to Chelsea, according to defender Eric Dier.

Dier and Co. lost 2-0 against Chelsea at Wembley in March and host their London rivals on Saturday in the Premier League.

England international Dier insists the team are now better prepared following the experience and no longer fear the embattled English champions.

"I personally learnt a lot that day and I think everyone else did," he said.

"They were very impressive that day because I think we were the better side but they just knew how to win.

"You could tell they had a lot of experienced players who have played a lot of games and won a lot of trophies and they knew how to win, to grind out a result.

"But I think we've proved that we learnt from that this season and we've ground out results like the one at Qarabag [1-0 on Thursday]."

Tottenham are unbeaten since the opening day of the season and sit fifth in the table, two points from the top four.

Dier believes Tottenham's impressive form can be attributed to hard work away from competition.

"The key is to do everything right behind closed doors," he said. "We need to eat well, sleep well, recover and do the right things.

"We have great facilities so need to use them. If we do everything right then we will be ready for Sunday."

The 21-year-old centre-back will have to contend with the physical battle of Diego Costa this weekend but said he will not try to get under the Spaniard's skin.

"You just don't get involved with him," he added. "I think he feeds off it and it helps him so the best thing to do is worry about playing your own game.

"These are the best games to play in and we are looking forward to it. The fans are too so hopefully we can give them something to be happy about."

Ramsey to continue in unfavoured wide role

    aaronramsey-cropped_1ebkg9v0mpmi21tx4dn7ueyb4u.jpg

Aaron Ramsey has been told by Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger he will continue to be used in his unfavoured position on the right wing.

Wales international midfielder Ramsey recently voiced his frustration at not playing in his preferred central role to his coach and was expected to be given the chance to line-up in the position against Norwich City on Sunday following injuries to Francis Coquelin and Mikel Arteta.

However, Wenger believes the 24-year-old and Santi Cazorla are too attack-minded to play alongside one another in a central position.

"I use Ramsey on the right. That’s where I will certainly continue to use him, unless the game demands to attack," the French boss said.

"He is more an offensive player. He is not a tactical, defensive player. I will use him sometimes there [centrally], when the game demands.

"I used him on the right because he gives us a balance because we have Ozil, who is an offensive player, we have Sanchez, we have Giroud or Walcott and Cazorla, so we need to balance a bit defensively."

The news will be a blow to Ramsey, whose most prolific campaign came in 2013-14 when he scored 16 times from a central midfield position.

Wenger revealed he tried utilising Ramsey in a deeper role during pre-season, but found no benefit.

"If you take that [attacking mindset] out of him, and you say, 'Look, you have to sit now. Sit there and wait,' you kill his strengths. He can do it, but he can do it with Coquelin. And Cazorla can do it with Coquelin. But Cazorla and Ramsey is a bit too adventurous.

"You also know in my mind I have seen that the turn of our results last season was when I went for a bit of stability and put Coquelin in there. Now I am a bit cautious on that front and I do not want to unbalance the team."

Costa must read the game better - Mourinho

    jose-mourinho-and-diego-costa-cropped_177j5gujlwyv11tsumf7oonvy7.jpg

Chelsea coach Jose Mourinho has called on struggling striker Diego Costa to improve his reading of the game.

The Spain international scored 20 Premier League goals in 26 appearances in a successful first season at Stamford Bridge which culminated in the title. It is form that starkly contrasts with his three strikes in 11 outings this term, with Chelsea sitting 15th in the table.

Mourinho believes Costa – who scored the winner against Norwich City last weekend – must show greater intelligence in his movement if he is to rediscover his best form."He is not reading the game properly in these actions. That was my opinion," the Portuguese coach said.

"As a striker he must read. You have to play not when you have the ball, but when others have the ball."You have to anticipate things and read the game faster. Everything is an accumulation.

"You're not on fire again just because you've scored a goal against Norwich. It's a process."The pair argued during Chelsea's 4-0 victory over Maccabi Tel Aviv in the Champions League in midweek, but Mourinho insisted no lasting damage has been done.

"Everything is okay, no problem," he said. "In the game I told him, from a distance, that I was not happy with the movement he did."He also told me a few nice words from where he was. And nothing happened, nothing happened at half-time."

Chelsea visit Tottenham on Sunday facing a 14-point deficit on leaders Leicester City and sitting 10 behind their London rivals.
