Javi Martinez shines in Guardiola system
Javi Martinez walked briskly through the mixed zone after Bayern Munich's 2-0 win over Hertha Berlin on Saturday. He played a starring role in the victory but showed no great desire to speak.
It was understandable, after all he'd done his talking with his feet. The 27-year-old has had little to shout about in three injury-plagued years at the club, but is beginning to find his feet at last.
While his quality has never been in question, his durability has. A cruciate knee ligament injury saw him miss the entire 2014/15 campaign, while a spate of niggles and knocks have restricted him to 92 appearances in all competitions at the Allianz Arena.
But, with 11 games under his belt this term, his physical problems may at last be over. Martinez started the game at centre-back, with Jerome Boateng making a surprise appearance in central midfield.
The pair swapped positions throughout the game, as Martinez displayed the quality and versatility that makes him such an invaluable member of Pep Guardiola's squad when he's fit.
The constant interchanging of roles would unsettle many players, but the former Atletico Madrid man told Goal he is at ease wherever he is asked to operate on the pitch.
He said: "I have previously played in midfield on a regular basis, where I feel comfortable. But the position does not really interest me. I just want to help the team.
"To change roles several times was not a problem. This flexibility of each individual is exactly what Pep expects and needs for his playing style which is very important for the team."
Guardiola lined his team up in a 2-5-3 formation in a bid to strangle a Hertha side who operated with five men in defence and midfield for much of the encounter.
The visitors' game plan worked for the opening 30 minutes, but Thomas Muller broke the deadlock on 34 minutes with a header at the back post from a corner-kick.
It was 2-0 shortly after. A wonderful, raking pass from Boateng picked out Kingsley Coman and the winger finished brilliantly to end the game as a contest before half-time.
Martinez couldn't get on the scoresheet himself, but it was the Spain international who won the plaudits of Guardiola after the game.
"Javi was very, very good," the coach said at his post-match press conference. "He has a great mentality and is always 100 per cent."

Klopp: I'm free to sign Dortmund players
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp insists he is free to sign players from Borussia Dortmund, denying an agreement is in place to prevent him raiding his former club.
The German coach has been linked with moves for several of Dortmund's stars, including defenders Mats Hummels and Neven Subotic and midfielder Ilkay Gundogan since joining in October.
However, Klopp has told supporters not to expect multiple transfers between the two clubs, explaining how his new side are unable to compete on the same finance scale as other elite clubs.
"I have no agreement with Borussia Dortmund," Klopp said. "I heard about an agreement, but no. Yet in my opinion it only makes sense to go for players we think we can get.
"So if we want to battle [with the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City]... we can pay 100 [million], they can pay 120. It’s a crazy marketplace when you start doing this.
"There are so many mothers in the world that have brilliant sons, so you don’t always have to take the guys that everybody knows.

Lingard and Rojo unfit for Leicester trip, says Van Gaal
Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal says injuries were behind the absences of Marcos Rojo and Jesse Lingard in Saturday's draw at Leicester City.
Neither Rojo nor Lingard made the trip to King Power Stadium after injuries suffered in the Champions League draw against PSV Eindhoven.
Van Gaal said the duo were not fit to face Leicester, who led through the red-hot Jamie Vardy before Bastian Schweinsteiger's headed equaliser in the 1-1 draw.
"I could not play with them. Lingard was a player in good shape so it was a pity," he said.
"Rojo is our left defender and that's also a pity because then I have to put my players in a different shape and different organisation. Because of that, I had to play with three defenders."
Van Gaal also played down injury concerns surrounding Wayne Rooney after the captain came off midway through the second half in place of Memphis Depay.
"Wayne Rooney was limping and that is why I changed him," Van Gaal said.
"I already wanted to change one of the strikers because they were not always running in behind.
"There were some times when if we were quick we had space to do that but we didn't so that is why I wanted to bring Memphis in.
"Maybe I would have changed [Anthony] Martial."

Olsson urges Ibrahimovic to make Premier League move
Paris Saint-Germain striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic has once again been urged to make a Premier League move.
The 34-year-old, whose contract with the Ligue 1 champions expires in mid-2016, said earlier in November it was too late to make a switch to the English top-flight.
But Ibrahimovic's Sweden team-mate and West Brom defender Jonas Olsson said the striker was still good enough to have an impact in the Premier League.
"He's still at the top of his game," Olsson said.
"He is the strongest player I have been up against. I really hope he comes. Zlatan on his day is the most talented footballer in the game.
"He has played under Jose Mourinho before [at Inter] and the only place where he's not 100 per cent appreciated is in the UK.
"I think he can play for any team in this league - he is still that good."
