Newcastle 0-1 Everton: Cleverley strikes at the death after thriller

    2453622_heroa.jpg

Tom Cleverley scored with the last kick of the game as Everton were belatedly rewarded for their domination of Newcastle with a 1-0 win at St James's Park.

Magpies goalkeeper Rob Elliot and his counterpart, Tim Howard, had been the central figures as both teams missed a host of presentable chances and a share of the spoils would have been a fair outcome, given the profligacy on display throughout, with the visitors' Romelu Lukaku and Newcastle striker Aleksandar Mitrovic among the chief offenders.

Cleverley spared his attacking colleagues' blushes, though, heading home to break Newcastle hearts in the 94th minute after Elliot ought to have done better, securing Everton a first league win in five attempts.

Newcastle, meanwhile, lost for the first time in four matches, a painful outcome for the strugglers, who have improved considerably of late but drop into the relegation zone.

A confident Everton dominated possession and chances during the first 25 minutes. Kevin Mirallas, Lukaku and Ross Barkley were all heavily involved, as Seamus Coleman's overlapping runs down the right flank in particular caused the hosts plenty of problems.

Martinez's men could not transform that control into clear-cut chances and were almost caught out on the break when Daryl Janmaat reached the byeline and delivered a cross to the top of the six-yard box, where Mitrovic glanced a header wide.

The hosts had two narrow escapes in as many minutes approaching the half-hour mark. Fabricio Coloccini could have given a penalty away for manhandling Lukaku metres out from the goal-line. The powerful Belgium striker was then played in one-on-one by Aaron Lennon but Elliot did well to remain upright and parry away his shot.
It was Newcastle's turn to go close in the 31st minute, when Howard had to race out and gather Mitrovic's knockdown, denying Ayoze Perez what would have been a simple finish.

A tight start to the second half initially produced few chances. Lukaku tested Elliot at the goalkeeper's near post in the 56th minute and, three minutes later, Lennon drew another save from the Irishman.

With 19 minutes to go, Perez collected a long ball forward, turned and fired just wide. Two minutes later, Mitrovic missed the best chance of the match so far, powering a header wide from close range after rising to meet Moussa Sissoko's chipped cross.

The Newcastle onslaught continued in the 76th minute, Georginio Wijnaldum heading Jack Colback's cross to the back post straight at Howard.

A breathless match screamed on and one minute later it was Elliot's turn to produce some heroics, reacting quickly to push Ramiro Funes Mori's header from a corner clear of danger and Chancel Mbemba denied Lukaku in stoppage-time with a last-ditch tackle as the striker raced clear.

However, from the resulting corner, Elliot could only punch as far as Cleverley, who looped an instinctive header back over the goalkeeper and in to snatch the win.

Klopp: I would like to be cooler

    jurgenklopp-cropped_1orhk9x49f45w1qkvdqb5zgk8a.jpg

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp says he would like to be cooler.

The 48-year-old has already produced a number of entertaining moments since moving to England from Germany, while he recently clashed with West Brom manager Tony Pulis in a fiery 2-2 draw.

And the former Borussia Dortmund manager admits that he sometimes lets his emotions get the better of him.

"I would like to be cooler but I am pretty emotional," he told reporters.

"Sometimes I laugh more than I should. Sometimes I get more angry than I should."

Klopp made his team show their appreciation towards their supporters after their draw with the Baggies, lining up with his players in front of the Kop, and he says he would repeat the gesture if fans so wished.

"It [the show of appreciation to the fans with the team] was a decision taken in the moment, I never planned it. If Liverpool fans tell me they enjoyed it, I may do it again. I like to be close to the fans, we have to build it up.

"It is interesting for me - I thought I knew a lot about England. We look similar but it seems we are different. This is the first time in my life I have lived in a foreign country and it is different – but everything is OK."

Pellegrini confirms more calf woes for Kompany

    vincentkompany-cropped_1vkax3bc51gha126o5eti4hali.jpg

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini confirmed that captain Vincent Kompany suffered a recurrence of his troublesome calf injury in Saturday's 4-1 win over Sunderland.

City were in sublime form at the Etihad Stadium as Raheem Sterling, Yaya Toure and Wilfried Bony put the hosts into a 3-0 half-time lead before the impressive Kevin De Bruyne made sure of the win after the break.

But the home fans fell silent in the 72nd minute when skipper Kompany limped off less than 10 minutes after coming on as a substitute for his first appearance since early November due to a persistent calf problem. And Pellegrini was at a loss to explain why the injury keeps reoccurring, telling BBC Sport: "I am happy that the performance was very good, we played attacking football, and I am happy with the individual performances. The only pity was Vincent Kompany’s injury.

"It is a calf injury. Nobody understands it. He had a good warm-up, he was working during the week with normality. It is difficult to understand."The most important thing is to understand why this happens. That is the most important to focus on now."

The big Belgian is likely to be ruled out for next Wednesday's Premier League title showdown with Leicester City along with Pablo Zabaleta and Samir Nasri.

Kroos: Don't write off Real Madrid yet

    toni-kroos-real-madrid_e0m68127lsso1bta5ri79al98.jpg

Toni Kroos insists it is still too early to write off Real Madrid, assuring fans they will fight for every piece of silverware available. The club have endured an eventful start to the season, in which coach Rafael Benitez, president Florentino Perez and the squad have incurred the wrath of the Bernabeu faithful despite sitting only two points behind Barcelona in La Liga.

Benitez continues to be an unpopular choice as coach amongst fans but Kroos has called for them to make their judgements only at the end of the season, urging that Madrid can still come good on their title ambitions this term.

"We're not even at the halfway point in the league and we performed very well in the Champions League group stage to make it to the last 16," the midfielder said on the club's official website.

"It's too early to be making evaluations. We’re Real Madrid - and being successful is part of our DNA. We're going to fight for everything and will go out to win all our matches. We want to do a lot better - for ourselves and for our fans. We've failed to be at our best at certain points of the season. But I’m optimistic. There's some room for improvement and I'm certain we'll get better.

"We work our socks off every day and the pay-off for that hard work will end up being reflected in the results."I'm positive that we'll find that consistency that is not only demanded of us by our fans, but that we want too."

Madrid host Real Sociedad when La Liga action resumes next Wednesday, as they aim to close the gap with Barcelona at the top of the table.

Donnarumma dreams of Champions League glory with AC Milan

    gianluigi-donnarumma-cropped_reh3cgneni4y1alqogbb6sjvd.jpg

Gianluigi Donnarumma dreams of helping AC Milan return to the Champions League and eventually helping the seven-time European champions to more titles.

The San Siro club have failed to qualify for Europe's premier club competition for the past two seasons and currently sit seven points adrift of third place in Serie A – the final qualification spot.

But having made his first-team debut at just 16 years old, the teenage goalkeeper hopes he can help form part of a team that returns the club to its former glories.
"I was born a Milan fan. It did not depend on one game but the passion for the Rossoneri," Donnarumma told Sky Sport Italia.

"The dream is to win the Scudetto and maybe even raise the Champions League."I've seen Milan make great campaigns and I would love to be involved myself.

"We could be doing more, but have also been a bit unlucky."We are a large group and we hope to qualify for Europe. We will give it all to try to get into the Champions League."

The teenager has been one of the revelations of the season, goiing on to make eight further appearances following his first outing in October and displacing previous regular Diego Lopez.

Southampton 4-0 Arsenal: Gunners crumble and miss chance to move top

    shane-long_1hf5ysir885s41c7xkvy74rk2d.jpg

Arsenal missed the chance to go top of the Premier League as Arsene Wenger's men were soundly beaten 4-0 by a much-improved Southampton at St Mary's Stadium on Saturday.

Wenger's side fuelled talk of a sustained title push with an impressive victory over Manchester City on Monday, but were punished for a lethargic display on the south coast as the hosts ended their run of five league games without a win in style.

Southampton had picked up just a point from their previous five outings, but, after a slow start, went ahead courtesy of Cuco Martina's impressive long-range effort 19 minutes in.

On his maiden Premier League start, Martina became the first Curacaoan to score in the division and Southampton grew in confidence, doubling the lead 10 minutes into the second half via the first of a Shane Long brace.

With limited attacking options on the bench, Wenger saw his side toil in the final third and struggle defensively as they failed to leapfrog leaders Leicester City - beaten 1-0 by Liverpool earlier in the day and two points clear of Arsenal.

Instead, Southampton - missing the likes of injured pair Graziano Pelle and Cedric Soares - saw Jose Fonte head in a third from a corner and Long make it 4-0 in stoppage time shortly after being denied by the woodwork to seal the points on a hugely frustrating evening for the visitors.

An unchanged Arsenal edged the opening stages, but fell behind to the hosts' first effort on target.Per Mertesacker only partially cleared Ryan Bertrand's delivery, allowing Martina to beat Petr Cech with a stunning outside-of-the-boot effort.

James Ward-Prowse dragged a shot wide before the half-hour mark as the home side grew in confidence, with Steven Davis failing to muster a clean strike on goal after Laurent Koscielny lost possession.

For all their early endeavour, Arsenal's best chances were a tame Theo Walcott shot easily gathered by Maarten Stekelenburg and a header from the Arsenal winger that found the side-netting.

Long almost doubled Southampton's half-time lead, but the striker could only put his lob over the crossbar while Sadio Mane's dangerous delivery failed to get the necessary touch early on the second half.

Virgil van Dijk had the ball in the net five minutes after the interval - his header adjudged offside - although Long did make it 2-0 with a breakaway goal before the hour. The Republic of Ireland international played a neat one-two with Mane, before turning his team-mate's cross past Cech from close range amid Arsenal complaints over a perceived trip from Long on Koscielny.

Arsenal continued to flounder going forward, with the likes of Mesut Ozil and Joel Campbell largely anonymous in the face of incessant Saints pressure.Former Southampton man Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was introduced for the latter after the hour, but it was Southampton who remained the more clinical, skipper Fonte heading home from Bertrand's set-piece 21 minutes from time.

The impressive Long hit the post, but was not to be denied a second when Dusan Tadic set him clear, the Saints forward finishing past Cech to complete a miserable outing for Wenger's men.

    Klopp: Liverpool goal was brilliant

    jurgen-klopp-cropped_nrwsmk239k6r1uc1ajp59n6a6.jpg

Jurgen Klopp praised the quality of the goal Liverpool scored in their 1-0 Premier League win over Leicester City at Anfield.

The home side dominated the opening stages but it was not until the 63rd minute that they finally broke the deadlock, with Christian Benteke slotting home Roberto Firmino's cross.

Klopp was delighted to see an end to Liverpool's four-game run without a victory in all competitions and felt his side handled the opposition and blustery conditions very well.

"After four games with no result, that was very important today," he said.

"Everybody knows of the quality of Leicester and what we had to do today was play simple football.

"We made the goal, brilliant situation where the boys showed their quality in small situations. We were never really under pressure."

Benteke - who came off the bench for the injured Divock Origi - missed a glorious chance for a second in the closing moments as he failed to convert from close range with Kasper Schmeichel out of his goal, but Klopp was nonetheless thrilled with his impact.

"The first half was really good and then we had to change. Christian Benteke was not warm, it's not easy to come into the game," he said.

"We had one of the biggest chances ever late on, six versus one I think and no goalkeeper and then the ball was in our box."

Klopp confirmed Origi has picked up a hamstring problem, adding: "Hamstring is the s*** word for me this year."

'Arsenal couldn't cope with our pace'

    shane-long-cropped_1ho7tp6hfnk9j1xf9r3xyubctm.jpg

Pace was the key to Southampton's 4-0 win over Arsenal, according to two-goal hero Shane Long.

Arsene Wenger's side came into the match after a 2-1 win against Premier League title rivals Manchester City, but a woeful defensive display resulted in a resounding defeat at St Mary's Stadium.

Long scored twice and hit the post as Southampton ended a five-game winless run in the top flight and the Irishman felt Arsenal had no response to the speed within his team's ranks.

"We caused them problems on the break and they did not like the pace in behind from me and Sadio [Mane] and we played on that," Long told BT Sport.

"We knew we were a good enough team, we knew we could play football, but it was not happening in the last few weeks."We went out there with the mentality of fighting hard for each other firstly and hoping the play comes from there.

"It was a good day all round, but we have got a hard game coming up in two days' time against West Ham."Cuco Martina set Southampton on the path to victory with a sublime 25-yard opener with the outside of his boot.

It was the Curacaoan's first Premier League appearance since September, and Long praised the effort the 26-year-old put in to return to the starting line-up."He's been brilliant in training, working really hard and deserved his chance in the team," he added.

Chelsea interest in Martinez is no lie, says agent

    2454742_heroa.jpg

Chelsea are interested in Atletico Madrid misfit Jackson Martinez, the striker's agent has hinted.

The Colombian has struggled to settle in the Spanish capital since arriving from Porto, scoring just twice in 11 Liga appearances before injury saw him miss the last nine matches prior to the mid-season break.

Reports in England have suggested that Tottenham and Chelsea could look to sign the 29-year-old in the coming transfer window, with Diego Costa linked with a return to the Vicente Calderon as part of a potential deal with the Premier League champions.Martinez's agent, Henrique Pompeo, refused to rule out a departure from Atletico but is adamant his client wants to make a success of his time with Diego Simeone's side.

"Jackson wants to succeed at Atletico, but it's the club who will decide his future," he told AS. "I cannot say if [Chelsea's interest] is a lie, that's football, and nobody knows what will happen in the future.

"What I want to say is that Jackson is not someone who will go somewhere unless it's through the front door."He made a choice and he is very happy in Madrid, he loves the club, although obviously he would have liked to start in another way on a personal level.

"He had to adapt to a new playing culture, and a thousand others things, and then the injury came. But he's happy for the group because things are going well."

Wenger: I trust my players to respond against Bournemouth

    arsene-wenger_q7ugmn2ev7zu1e79pv7stlhef.jpg

Arsene Wenger has backed Arsenal to bounce back from a heavy defeat to Southampton when they face Bournemouth on Monday.

The north-London side suffered a resounding 4-0 loss at St Mary's Stadium on Saturday, missing the chance to overtake Leicester City at the Premier League summit.

Despite the defeat, Wenger is backing his players to show their mental strength and respond with a positive result against Eddie Howe's team next time out."These players have fantastic spirit and they will show that in 48 hours," Wenger told reporters.

"We want to respond from disappointment. I trust my players to respond well on Monday."Tonight we were not good enough to win the game. We can't dwell on that too much."

Shane Long scored twice as Ronald Koeman's side surged to victory on Saturday, but Wenger felt the referee allowed the striker to get away with several fouls."I must say they were sharper than us in the tackles. We cannot master the referee's decisions but we can master our behaviour," he said.

"I felt we were physically not at our best. Long made the game very physical and got away with a lot."We had to come out and take many risks and they looked sharp on the counter-attack."

Thierry Henry reveals Pep Guardiola's plans during Barcelona training sessions

    2449972_heroa.jpg

Thierry Henry has given an insight into life during training sessions under Pep Guardiola at Barcelona and has revealed that every drill was done at “an intensity of 2,000 per cent”.

Henry was signed by Frank Rijkaard for Barcelona in 2007 but won two La Liga titles and the Champions League in his two seasons under Guardiola.

And Arsenal’s record goalscorer insists Guardiola’s insistence on high-intensity sessions were key to the club’s success.

“Training sessions were never long, not even in pre-season, but everything was done at an intensity of 2,000 per cent,” Henry wrote in his column for The Sun.

“We trained the way we were expected to play, giving every drop of energy and paying so much attention to detail.

“People always go on about how good Pep’s teams are on the ball, the tricks, the flicks and the goals.

“What they don’t mention is the attention given to defending and all the work involved in getting everyone in the right place — and that was developed in training.

“You were expected to run all the time. If you had a break in training to get a drink, you had to run to the sidelines and run straight back on to the pitch.

“There was no mucking around and no room for egos. The players had to carry the goalposts on to the pitch because he wanted us to do everything as a team - and in double-quick time.

“Pep was surrounded by superstars but kept them all on their toes by challenging them every minute of every day.”

    Ribery hoping for injury-free 2016

    franck-ribery-cropped_1u62to45au9ib1d58td7ppgscm.jpg

Bayern Munich winger Franck Ribery has just one wish for 2016: to stay clear of the injuries that have restricted him to just two appearances so far this season.

The former Marseille man returned from a nine-month injury lay-off in December but, after scoring as a substitute in defeat to Borussia Monchengladbach, he lasted just 45 minutes of the Champions League win against Dinamo Zagreb. It was subsequently announced that he had suffered an unspecified muscle injury and would miss the remainder of 2015.

Although Bayern's strength in depth means they have continued to lead the way in the Bundesliga - they hold an eight-point advantage at the midway point - Ribery himself is itching to get back to full fitness to aid the club's challenge domestically and in Europe.Asked for his new year's wish by the club's official website, he said: "That I am fit again as soon as possible. I am really motivated to return.

"The two or three weeks in which I was fit in December were lovely and it's where I belong."I hope all the injured players are fit again soon. We want to fight together for many titles."

Ribery insisted he never feared for his career but conceded he may have returned too soon prior to the winter break.

"My head was ready but the muscle was still weak," he added."It's important that my ankle no longer causes me any problems. Now it's just a muscle injury. I need rhythm and matches."

Neymar refuses to guarantee Barcelona stay

    neymar-cropped_17xh7e9u1xfwp1qcmmpudefus7.jpg

Barcelona forward Neymar says he is "optimistic" about agreeing a new contract at Camp Nou, but refused to guarantee his long-term future at the club.

Talks over an improved deal with Barca have been rumbling on for a number of weeks despite the Brazil international having three years left to run on his current agreement.

Neymar's father and agent insisted earlier this month that they would agree an extension with the European champions, but speculation persists that he could be tempted to move elsewhere, with bitter rivals Real Madrid and Manchester City, tipped to appoint Pep Guardiola as head coach ahead of next season, linked with potential bids.

The 23-year-old says there is no truth in rumours of a move to the Eithad Stadium, but could not give any assurances over his future when speaking to the media at Barcelona airport.

"We're talking about my renewal. I'm optimistic. But I don't know what will happen," he said. When asked if he would follow Guardiola to City, he replied, laughing: "No, not that," before adding of his long-term future: "I don't know. Life is long."

Brazil icon Pele has criticised Neymar for a lack of all-round team play in recent weeks but the former Santos forward was happy to dismiss it.

"I didn't hear it. Pele can say what he likes, I talk about my work," he said.Former Barcelona star Ronaldinho has been effusive in his praise, however, describing Neymar as his natural heir for the Brazil senior side."He's great, he's a legend. The best Brazilian who's played for Barcelona," Neymar added.

Ibrahimovic: Qatar move is an option

    zlatan-ibrahimovic-cropped_mncrb83fq7u41t4op53dbbt6r.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic has suggested he could continue his career in Qatar.

The 34-year-old's existing contract with the Ligue 1 champions is due to expire at the end of the season and he has yet to make a decision on his future.Ibrahimovic has been heavily linked with a move to MLS and the Premier League, but he has hinted that a move to the Qatar Stars League is an option as well.

"My current situation is new to me. I have an expiring contract and that is a new experience. I am free to do what I want," Ibrahimovic told L'Equipe.

"I am focused on PSG for now. I still have six months to go on my current contract and I want to give my best for the team. I do not have a next destination in mind.

"I have a good relationship with PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi and with the people of Qatar, but I cannot say anything at this stage. Let's just say that a move to Qatar is an option."I am enjoying my football at the moment and I'm feeling well both mentally and physically. I am enjoying myself each game. We will see what happens."

Ibrahimovic has worked with coaches such as Jose Mourinho, Pep Guardiola, Carlo Ancelotti and Laurent Blanc throughout his career and he has revealed that he could pursue a career on the bench as well once he hangs up his boots.
"I do not think as a player," he added.

"I have a lot of experience and have played under some great coaches. They have learned me a lot."We will see whether a career as a coach is an option at the end of my career.

Schweinsteiger loving life at Manchester United

    van-gaal-schweinsteiger-cropped_1er9ukhptuun91t0s05edpq7fo.jpg

Bastian Schweinsteiger says being at Manchester United is a "perfect experience" despite the criticism of his form and the club's current struggles.

United slumped to a fourth successive league defeat at Stoke City on Saturday - their worst run of form in a single season since 1961 - prompting further question marks over the future of manager Louis van Gaal.

Van Gaal has been critical of Schweinsteiger's form since the Germany captain swapped Bayern Munich for Old Trafford during the close season, but the 31-year-old insists he is enjoying life in England. He told www.dfb.de: "Manchester is just a perfect experience that has enriched my professional life tremendously.

"Bayern Munich, the Germany national team and Manchester United - these are my three teams. Had someone told me that 16 years ago I would have taken it!
"I like Manchester. There are many nice people here, good restaurants. I feel good."

Schweinsteiger has noticed differences between the Bundesliga, in which Bayern have dominated in recent years, and the Premier League, adding: "The physicality [in England] is extremely high. The teams in the bottom third of the table require everything [to beat them]. The level of performance from one team to another is closer. And the crowds always urge their team forward."

Schweinsteiger has not, however, been surprised with the methods employed by Van Gaal.

"His style of play is known to me," he said. "We have worked together at Bayern Munich. Although I am experienced I am still young enough to adjust to new things.

"We are a team under construction and have to find what is right this season. In the league we are on target but going out of the Champions League was a big disappointment."Germany boss Joachim Low recently defended Schweinsteiger against accusations he was too slow and ponderous to be a success in England, and Low's assistant Thomas Schneider has also waded in to the argument.

"I've seen games where I've had the feeling he is not fully integrated into the gameplan," he told the Abendzeitung."It seems that the team does not use his potential enough. He could give them a lot more."

Falcao: I haven't been given the opportunities I want

    2455962_heroa.jpg

Radamel Falcao has expressed his gratitude to Chelsea for taking a chance on him after a rocky season at Manchester United, but feels he hasn't been given the right opportunities to showcase his true worth.

The Colombian endured a tumultuous season with the Red Devils, suffering from the wrath of unimpressed fans due to a poor conversion rate despite his reputation as a proven goalscorer.

The Blues gave the striker another chance this season, however, offering Falcao a season-long loan deal similar to that of United, and the 29-year-old is eager to get more playing time to regain consistency after the club's showing of faith.

"Chelsea are the team who bet on me, and I took that opportunity," he told Hola Colombia. "However, it has been complicated because the team hasn't started the season the best, nor have I been given the opportunities I want.

"But I'm very grateful, very happy. As for the future, I hope to have more opportunities to show what I can do in the second half of the season."

In and out of the squad due to injury, Falcao has featured just nine times for Chelsea, scoring only one goal.

    Robben disappointed by Guardiola exit

Arjen Robben has voiced his disappointment with Pep Guardiola's decision to leave Bayern Munich at the end of the season.

The Bundesliga champions announced last week that Guardiola will not extend his contract at the Allianz Arena, with Carlo Ancelotti to take his place in June.

Robben is sad to see Guardiola move on, but is determined to give him a fitting farewell present as Bayern chase the treble."It is a real shame that Guardiola is leaving," Robben told NOS."Yes, I am bit disappointed to see him leave.

"We will have to wait and see how things pan out with Ancelotti. It's always like that with a new coach. You have to start all over again.

"But it is obviously still very early to say anything about it. It has just been formally announced, but we are only halfway through the season and there is still plenty to win."We can focus on football again once the winter break is over."

Robben missed Bayern's final games of 2015 due to injury but is eagerly anticipating the re-start of the Bundesliga."I expect to be fully match fit again for our first game after the winter break," he added.

"I am happy that 2015 is nearly behind us. It has not been a good year for me. I got injured in March or April after a foul and never really got over it. I struggled from there on."

Carrick: Manchester United ARE fighting for Van Gaal

    michaelcarrick-cropped_tu2op4vgsikt1x2jh7jvmf7qd.jpg

Manchester United vice-captain Michael Carrick has hit out at "disrespectful" critics suggesting the players are no longer trying to play for manager Louis van Gaal.Carrick played 90 minutes as United put in another dire performance against Stoke City on Boxing Day, eventually losing 2-0.

The loss was United's fourth in a row, a streak that the club has not endured since 1961, with reports rife that Van Gaal is imminently set for the sack after losing the faith of the club and his squad. But Carrick said the players are still doing their best for their boss, and acknowledges that they must turn their fortunes around quickly.

"It is a bit disrespectful when people say the lads aren't trying for the manager," Carrick told reporters. "That hurts us - it's not the type of people we are.

"We haven't won games and it is fair enough if people criticise things that have gone wrong on the pitch."It is a horrible run, and it is a horrible feeling. It hurts badly.

"The run we've been on is just not good enough. We can't hide from it, we're not going to hide from it. That is how it is and we all need to be better."United will look to redeem themselves when they face Premier League strugglers Chelsea at Old Trafford on Monday.

Van Gaal: I'm running out of ideas to help Man Utd stars

    2451912_heroa.jpg

Louis van Gaal has admitted he is running out of ways to motivate his struggling Manchester United players as they prepare to host Chelsea at Old Trafford.

United have lost four straight competitive games, with Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at Stoke City leaving Van Gaal in fear for his future and the first-team squad suffering an increased crisis of confidence ahead of the visit of Guus Hiddink’s men.

And the United manager concedes that after such a poor run of results it becomes difficult to find new ways to pick up his players mentally.

"It is not so easy anymore, and after you lose four matches in a row it is much more difficult after the third match," he told reporters. "It’s like that, and the pressure of the environment shall increase so it is much more difficult.

"So I know there are no artificial ways to solve that, we need a victory and that’s very important. But we have to do also our professional work, the preparation and of course also the recovery and the training sessions.

"But now we only can recover, we cannot train. We have to recover and then play the match against Chelsea."

United have now failed to win in their last seven fixtures and have collected only three victories in their last 14 matches, scoring just 11 goals in the process.

And the 64-year-old defended his under-fire squad, saying it is not unnatural for top players to find a string of losses tough to overcome.

"I don’t think so because I have seen that also in my other jobs. When you lose in a top team then it is always more difficult to cope with your environment and you cannot say that it is in Manchester much more different.

"You see, of course, that different players cope with that pressure in a different way and that is also true in other teams. It is for every individual player, for every human being, it is different in how they cope with it. And it is not so easy."

Jose Mourinho is being widely touted as the favourite to replace Van Gaal as United manager, and a fifth straight loss against the Portuguese’s former club on Monday could force a decision from the club’s board of directors before Saturday’s clash with Swansea.
