Atalanta 1-1 Inter: Mancini's men dealt another Scudetto blow

    2537782_heroa.jpg

Inter's Scudetto hopes took another knock as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Atalanta at the Atleti Azzurri d'Italia on Saturday.

Roberto Mancini's side headed to Bergamo looking to bounce back from their shock home defeat to Sassuolo last weekend, but found themselves behind early on thanks to an own goal from Jeison Murillo.

Inter hauled themselves level soon after when Rafael Toloi sliced into his own net after a fine combination between Mauro Icardi and Stevan Jovetic, Inter's strike pair who had been widely been criticised this week for failing to play well together.

However, the visitors were indebted to goalkeeper Samir Handanovic for keeping a dominant home side at bay for much of the first hour, with one sprawling stop to deny Luca Cigarini particularly key.

Inter began to turn up the pressure in the closing stages as a frustrated Mancini urged his team forward, but Marco Sportiello was given almost nothing to do in the Atalanta goal as the home side held on for a deserved point.

The Milan club will now find themselves four points adrift of Serie A leaders Napoli should they beat Sassuolo later on Saturday.

Atalanta had lost their previous three league games against Inter but looked determined to end that run from the off, with Jasmin Kurtic heading wide after Handanovic saved well from Boukary Drame.

Inter struggled to get a foothold early on and found themselves a goal down with just 17 minutes played. Drame skipped into the area past weak challenges from Danilo D'Ambrosio and Miranda, and his prod towards goal was turned into his own net by Murillo right in front of Handanovic.

Handanovic had to be alert to deny Gaetano Monachello at the near post as he robbed Murillo inside the Inter area, and that intervention proved timely as an own goal of their own saw Atalanta hand Inter an equaliser.

Icardi was picked out in the area by Jovetic after a clever dummy, and his drilled cross was sliced high into his own net by Toloi from inside the six-yard box.

Atalanta looked the more likely to score the third and Handanovic twice saved superbly to keep the scores level, first keeping out Monachello's half-volley before making a fine reaction stop to tip Toloi's header over the crossbar.

The Slovenia international then produced a spectacular stop to deny Cigarini from point-blank range, as he somehow spread himself mid-air to block a strike from the midfielder that looked certain to put Atalanta back in front.

Inter had offered next to no attacking threat in the second half but Icardi wasted one excellent chance when he blazed a volley over the bar after being picked out by Adem Ljajic's clever chip.

Mancini threw on Jonathan Biabiany and Ivan Perisic in a bid to lift an ailing attack but, despite dominating the play in the closing stages, they failed to muster a clear-cut chance to snatch a vital victory.

Southampton 3-0 West Brom: Ward-Prowse secures Saints victory

    2537952_heroa.jpg

Southampton claimed back-to-back victories in the Premier League for the first time since early November thanks to a James Ward-Prowse double in their 3-0 win over West Bromwich Albion.

The England Under-21 midfielder had scored just once in his previous 92 top-flight appearances for the Saints, but took his tally to three with a superb free-kick and well-placed penalty, before Dusan Tadic completed the win.

After thumping home the game's opener early on, Ward-Prowse bagged his second after 35 minutes following a clumsy challenge by Craig Dawson on Matt Targett.Sadio Mane wasted a fine chance for Southampton's third early in the second half, before Victor Anichebe volleyed West Brom's best opening wide.

The game's third goal did come eventually, though, as substitute Tadic secured the three points for Ronald Koeman's side - the Serbian firing home nine minutes after replacing Mane.

Victory moves Southampton into the top 10 and brings West Brom's three-match unbeaten run to an abrupt halt on Tony Pulis' 58th birthday.

With new signing Charlie Austin watching from the stands, Southampton – who made two changes from their win over Watford – made a positive start and found themselves ahead after five minutes.A poor challenge from Dawson on Mane gave the hosts a free-kick 25 yards from goal, and Ward-Prowse curled home the set-piece with unerring accuracy.

Buoyed by the goal, Southampton began to dominate possession, but West Brom still posed a threat on the counter and went close to levelling in the 10th minute, when Craig Gardner – one of three new faces for Albion – headed James McClean's cross wide of goal.

With Gardner and Shane Long having wasted opportunities at either end, Southampton doubled their advantage just after the half-hour mark as Dawson was adjudged to have fouled Targett in the penalty area.Ward-Prowse assumed responsibility from the spot and coolly sent Boaz Myhill the wrong way to treble his goal tally in the Premier League.

The visitors introduced Salomon Rondon and Chris Brunt after the break, and Pulis' side posed more of an attacking threat in the opening exchanges of the second half.

It did not last long, though, as Southampton came back into the game and should have extended their advantage just before the hour only for Mane to drag his shot wide from a tight angle.

Tadic made no mistake from a similar position, completing Southampton's victory after 72 minutes by lashing the ball home following an exquisite pass from Steven Davis.

Southampton's day nearly ended on a sour note as Long was left writhing in agony following a strong challenge from Jonny Evans, but after treatment he was able to finish the match, much to Koeman's relief.

Manchester City 4-0 Crystal Palace: Aguero hits double in Blues stroll

    2538062_heroa.jpg

Sergio Aguero scored twice as Manchester City cruised to a 4-0 victory over Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Victory moves City above Leicester City and Arsenal on goal difference at the summit ahead of their nearest rivals' weekend fixtures and acts as a welcome tonic to Wednesday night's frustrating 0-0 draw against Everton at the Etihad Stadium.

In response to that setback, Pellegrini opted to start with two recognised strikers – prodigious youngster Kelechi Iheanacho joining Aguero in attack, while playmaker David Silva returned as Raheem Sterling and Yaya Toure dropped to the bench.

City lacked their customary control of central areas in Toure's absence but the Ivory Coast star's central midfield replacement Fabian Delph fired them ahead midway through the first half.

It was another moment to forget for Wayne Hennessey, whose dreadful error allowed lowly Aston Villa to beat Alan Pardew's side in midweek, but there was nothing the Palace goalkeeper could do as Aguero's deflected strike spun into the corner to make it 2-0.

City's top scorer added his second after half-time and Silva completed the rout with six minutes to go as Palace were left to reflect on failing to find the net for a fifth consecutive league match.

Connor Wickham replaced Bakary Sako up front as Pardew sought to address this slump, but it was visiting defender Damien Delaney who was afforded space in the area to draw a sharp second-minute save from Joe Hart.

Scott Dann had a header blocked from Jason Puncheon's corner before Wickham blazed over, meaning the opener came against the run of play after 22 minutes.

Having been instrumental in a tidy period of sustained possession, Delph surged forward and unleashed a 30-yard drive that skidded underneath Hennessey after he saw it late.

Palace had a chance to equalise in unusual circumstances as Hart clattered a clearance at James McArthur but Delaney scuffed the loose ball over.

The England goalkeeper resumed more impressive work when he plunged to keep out Yohan Cabaye's 33rd-minute free-kick.

At the other end, Aguero hooked narrowly wide having lost his footing under pressure but fortune smiled on the Argentina international four minutes before the break.

Aguero's clipped 25-yard effort then deflected off Dann's head and Hennessey could not keep it out of his bottom-right corner.

City lost Aleksandar Kolarov to a calf strain amid snowfall early in the second half, Gael Clichy replacing his fellow left-back, and Toure appeared before the hour in place of Iheanacho.

Palace still looked to ask questions of their hosts, Joel Ward whistling a low strike wide from the edge of the box, but Hart's backline had long since shed their early jitters.

Toure was involved when City made the points safe, feeding Kevin De Bruyne to cut across goal for Aguero to stroke his 13th of the season into an unguarded net.

Palace still gamely sought to end their dry spell but this willingness to push forward allowed Aguero to stream clear on the break and unselfishly feed Silva for a simple finish, sealing another chastening reverse for the Londoners at a ground where they were beaten 5-1 in this season's League Cup.

Chelsea 3-3 Everton: Terry grabs 98th-minute equaliser in astonishing finish

    2538302_heroa.jpg

John Terry's 98th-minute equaliser rescued a point for Chelsea and capped a thrilling and controversial finish to their 3-3 draw against Everton.

Ramiro Funes Mori had put Everton ahead in the 90th minute after the Toffees had blown a two-goal lead but Terry equalised deep into stoppage time from an offside position to preserve Guus Hiddink's unbeaten start.

The two sides exchanged few chances in the first half but the match burst into life when Terry sent a Leighton Baines cross into his own net shortly after the break.

After Ross Barkley had hit the post, Kevin Mirallas worsened Chelsea's predicament with a sublime second in the 56th minute at the end of another flowing Everton move.

But Diego Costa - who limped off late on - and Cesc Fabregas scored goals two minutes apart in a rousing comeback before Funes Mori's brilliant finish in the final minute of normal time.

Not for the first time this season, Roberto Martinez's side failed to see the game out although they will be angered by the assistant referee's failure to flag Terry offside.

Hiddink replaced Oscar with Nemanja Matic in his only change from Wednesday's 2-2 draw with West Brom, pushing Fabregas into a more advanced midfield role.

The Spaniard slipped the lively Willian in behind the Everton defence with a well-weighted pass after 16 minutes but the Brazilian's powerful strike was deflected over by Howard.

Everton threatened on the break but it was not until five minutes before the interval that Martinez's side tested Courtois, who had to dive low to his left to keep Mirallas' effort out of the bottom-left corner.

The hosts started the second half strongly but fell behind when Baines' cross caught Terry out and the Chelsea captain inadvertently sent the ball into his own net.

Barkley came close to doubling Everton's advantage when his near-post effort crashed off the upright before Mirallas expertly controlled another Baines cross and lashed the bouncing ball past Courtois.

Chelsea's response was brilliant, however, and by the 66th minute they had restored parity with two goals in quick succession.

First, Costa capitalised on some defensive indecision to latch on to a long Fabregas pass between the Phil Jagielka and Howard before rounding the goalkeeper and finishing into the empty net.

The striker then returned the favour for Fabregas, producing a clever backheel to find his compatriot, whose deflected shot from the edge of the area snuck inside the near post.

Everton looked to have found the winner in the final minute of normal time when Funes Mori hooked Deulofeu's outstanding cross inside the far post.

But Terry latched onto Oscar's header inside the box to score a sensational equaliser with 98 minutes on the clock despite calls for offside.

Toulouse 0-1 Paris Saint-Germain: Zlatan strikes to break down stubborn hosts

    2538562_heroa.jpg

Zlatan Ibrahimovic finally broke the deadlock to keep up Paris Saint-Germain's winning run, as the Ligue 1 leaders were forced to dig deep in order to beat Toulouse 1-0.

The Sweden international was denied by a goal-line clearance from Issa Diop early on, but claimed his 16th goal of the season in the second half to extend PSG's unbeaten run in Ligue 1 to 30 games.

Toulouse caused the reigning champions plenty of problems in the opening 45 minutes and were unfortunate not to go a goal up when Wissam Ben Yedder hit the crossbar.

Laurent Blanc's men stepped it up a notch after the break and Lucas Moura should have opened the scoring after a fine team-move, only to aim inches wide.Ibrahimovic would eventually come to the rescue, though, heading home from close range after some good work from David Luiz.

It was not all good news for Blanc, however, as both Javier Pastore and Marquinhos were forced off through injury.

The first chance of the match fell to PSG after nine minutes following good work from Benjamin Stambouli down the right. The midfielder did well to pick out Ibrahimovic with a fine cross, but the Swede saw his left-footed volley smuggled clear by Diop, having already beaten goalkeeper Alban Lafont.

Toulouse were happy to sit back and defend deep, aiming to hurt the reigning champions on the counter-attack and that tactic nearly paid off in the 13th minute. William Matheus sent in a dangerous cross from the left after Ibrahimovic had lost possession, but Ben Yedder headed just wide from a narrow angle.Ibrahimovic tried his luck with an ambitious free-kick from 25 yards on the half-hour mark, but it sailed over the crossbar.

PSG goalkeeper Kevin Trapp was called into action shortly after following another quick break from the home side, but Ben Yedder’s header after Matheus’ cross lacked the power to worry the former Germany Under-21 international.

Ben Yedder continued to cause the PSG defence all kinds of trouble and he came close to breaking the deadlock in the 35th minute, dancing past David Luiz before beating Trapp with a powerful shot, which cannoned back off the woodwork.
Ibrahimovic threatened twice in the early stages of the second half, but the prolific striker first blasted a shot wide, before heading harmlessly over the bar after a cross from Serge Aurier.

Lucas should have opened the scoring in the 63th minute after a superb team move. Thiago Motta played in Edinson Cavani, who backheeled the ball towards Ibrahimovic, who in turn squared it wide for Lucas, but the Brazilian placed his shot just wide from inside the area.

PSG finally broke the deadlock in the 73rd minute through Ibrahimovic. David Luiz beat his marker to the ball after a corner from Lucas and his header reached the unmarked Ibrahimovic, with the Swede heading home from close range to decide the match.

The former Barcelona striker nearly netted a second in the closing stages with a powerful free-kick from 30 yards out, but Lafont did well to punch the ball wide for a corner.

Aston Villa 1-1 Leicester City: Mahrez misses penalty as Foxes drop points

    2538632_heroa.jpg

Substitute Rudy Gestede snatched a point for bottom club Aston Villa against Leicester City, who edged back to the top of the Premier League table with a 1-1 draw.

Shinji Okazaki broke the deadlock after 28 minutes when the goal decision system confirmed his close-range effort was over the line despite the best efforts of Villa goalkeeper Mark Bunn.

Riyad Mahrez had a first-half penalty saved by Bunn and Villa, aiming to build on their first league win since the opening day of the season against Crystal Palace in midweek, improved considerably after the break.

Amid suspicions of handball, Gestede got the better of Robert Huth – City's matchwinner at Tottenham on Wednesday but an unconvincing defensive presence here – and crashed home 15 minutes from time.

Leicester edge a point above Manchester City and Arsenal at the summit but will cede that position if Arsene Wenger's men avoid defeat at Stoke City on Sunday, while Villa are six points adrift at the foot of the table and nine from safety.

Both teams named unchanged XIs, meaning Villa captain Micah Richards had to be content with a place on the bench after shaking off an ankle problem.

Leicester's top scorer Jamie Vardy came close to ending his five-match goalless run when he sent a header from ex-Villa man Marc Albrighton's free-kick bouncing wide, with Bunn scrambling.

Bunn's next involvement came when he charged out of his area towards the left channel and clattered Vardy - whose pace was already troubling the Villa defence – to earn a 14th-minute yellow card.

Villa performed fitfully during the opening stages but were almost gifted a 20th-minute opener as Huth's dreadful backpass was seized upon by Libor Kozak but Kasper Schmeichel saved at his near post.

Schmeichel was involved when his team broke through as his goal-kick released Vardy - the striker's lofted effort was superbly saved by Bunn but the Villa keeper was recovering behind his line when Okazaki blasted the rebound at him to scrappily open the scoring.

Five minutes on from those attempted heroics, Villa were indebted to Bunn for keeping out Mahrez's penalty after Aly Cissokho's handball from the winger's more convincingly struck goalbound shot.

Cissokho was involved at the other end seven minutes into the second half as he collected Ashley Westwood's backheel to clatter a shot at Schmeichel.

Villa penalty shouts fell on deaf ears after an hour when Huth caught Kozak with a flailing arm – Garde remaining in dialogue with the fourth official as the forward gingerly returned to his feet.

Jordan Ayew skipped down the Leicester left after 66 minutes only for Leandro Bacuna to side-foot too close to Schmeichel.

The visitors retained their threat on the break and Vardy was driven wide by the ever-alert Bunn, the England man's eventual cross prodded wide by Danny Drinkwater.

They would regret spurning such a chance when Gestede bundled past Huth, the ball striking his hand, and rifled into the top corner via a deflection off the sliding Wes Morgan.

Kozak and Vardy – who was booked along with Bacuna for a heated late confrontation – both blazed late chances over the bar and Villa could reflect on the most encouraging week yet of a dire season.

Costa taken to hospital with shin injury

    2538222_heroa.jpg

Guus Hiddink has confirmed that Diego Costa has been taken to hospital to have scans on a shin injury he suffered in Chelsea's 3-3 draw with Everton on Saturday.

The Spain international, who scored his seventh Premier League goal of the season in the draw, suffered the injury late on and could now be a doubt for next Sunday's clash with Arsenal.

“Now he is in the hospital and they will have a check now with a scan. We don’t know the result yet,” said Hiddink.

"We hope Diego is coming out of the hospital in good health and we will go on as are for the moment."

Chelsea went two behind against Everton following John Terry's own goal and Kevin Mirallas' strike. Costa and Cesc Fabregas pulled Hiddink's men level before Ramiro Funes Mori put Roberto Martinez's side back in front, but Terry netted again in injury time to rescue a draw.

:cool:Pereira not keen on Man Utd loan exit

    2538822_heroa.jpg

Andreas Pereira has no plans to leave Manchester United on loan in January, Goal understands.

Pereira has made seven appearances in all competitions so far this season, starting twice in the League Cup, and has been linked with a temporary move away from the club.

But Goal has learned that the 20-year-old feels settled at United and wants to build on recent outings off the bench against Stoke City and Sheffield United to convince Louis van Gaal to offer him more playing time.

The Belgium-born midfielder was monitored closely by Paris Saint-Germain last season but remained at Old Trafford.

Pereira recently declared himself willing to be patient in order to earn a place in Van Gaal's first team.

"You just have to handle these kind of things," he said. "[You have to] keep waiting for your opportunity and I think that's what I'm doing, and just keep working hard.

"Of course you want to play every game but I have been on the bench. When I come on, I want to help my team so hopefully next time [maybe I can start]."

Bayern in no rush to open Gotze contract renewal talks

    mariogotze-cropped_y9b8p5lggvy1kq6nm667imw2.jpg

Bayern Munich sporting director Matthias Sammer has stressed the reigning Bundesliga champions are not too worried about Mario Gotze's situation and are in no rush to open talks over a new deal.

The 23-year-old recently suggested he could be on his way out of the Allianz Arena come the end of the season, with Liverpool allegedly keeping a close eye on his situation.

Bayern are looking to clarify Gotze's future at the club in the upcoming weeks, but Sammer has made it clear that does not necessarily mean they will also open contract talks, with his existing deal due to expire in June 2017.

"We will look at Gotze's contract situation in peace. Bayern Munich are the party calling the shots," Sammer told Sat1.

"There is no problem at all with Mario. We all know how the situation is and how long his contract is still running."And we know when there are certain key moments. But we are the ones who are in charge.

"We are in no rush and will work on this at our leisure."Gotze, who has scored four goals in 11 appearances for Bayern this term, is currently recovering from a hamstring injury.

:DVan Gaal: I used to be animated like Klopp on the touchline

    jurgenklopp-cropped_ddnoskxnn45ezamksys0049r.jpg

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal says he used to be like Jurgen Klopp on the touchline until he developed the ability to control his emotions.

Klopp, who took over at Liverpool in October and comes up against Van Gaal's men at Anfield on Sunday in the Premier League, is renowned for being an entertaining figure in his technical area with his celebrations and antics.

The German is also known for getting in the ears of referees, something Van Gaal can relate to in his earlier days of management. "When I was younger I was like Klopp." he said. "Now at 64 I can control my passion more.

"I don't think the referees in England are influenced by what the manager or the fans do. Every manager has his own identity, his own personality and also his own philosophy."When I started my career I did that [Klopp-like actions] also. But I don't think you can influence from the touchline."

Van Gaal knew he had to tone down his emotions on the touchline after performing a fly-kick in Ajax's 1-0 Champions League final win over AC Milan in 1995.

"I did a karate kick," said Van Gaal, laughing at the memory."It was the 1995 Champions League final, Ajax against AC Milan, and I did a flying kick.

"We won 1-0, but we should have had a penalty for a high tackle on [Jari] Litmanen."I was angry, so I did a karate kick on the touchline – about a foot away from the fourth official's face. I wanted to show him what had happened to Litmanen.

"It should have been a penalty, but the referee did not whistle for a penalty. And in that moment, I realised that a manager can never influence the referee by what he does on the touchline."I realised that you have to control your passion. I know a lot of fans like the manager to show he is angry and at Newcastle [United] the other night I was angry when Jesse Lingard missed a chance to score [in the 3-3 draw].

"I am a little bit older now. But I still see the referee from 1995. He is a UEFA controller of referees now – and he reminds me what happened that night."

Wenger: Stoke fans hate me more than Tottenham do!

    stokecitysupporters-cropped_1txodysrngf601x1185wfzasol.jpg

Arsene Wenger says clashes with Stoke City are even more aggressive than against Arsenal's bitter rivals Tottenham.

The feud with Stoke stretches back to 2010 when Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey suffered a double fracture in his leg after a brutal Ryan Shawcross tackle.

Wenger compared tackles from Shawcross and his defensive partner Robert Huth as "more like rugby", prompting abuse from Stoke supporters.

While the Potters have employed a different approach under Mark Hughes than previous manager Tony Pulis, Wenger says he feels more aggression from Stoke fans that Tottenham supporters.

"Yes – I don’t know why [there is more antipathy from Stoke fans]. You should ask them. I don’t bully them," he said.

"It is maybe more aggressive than Tottenham. I think the major incident was Ramsey. That is where it started."

Wenger then recalled verbal anger from Arsenal supporters following their 3-2 loss to Stoke last season.

"It was made more of than it really was," he said. "It was four people shouting. Out of how many hundreds of thousands of fans we have – it looked like all the fans did it. It was four people.

"It didn’t stop me from sleeping — what stops me from sleeping is losing games.

"It has happened before that fans were not happy and chanted in the stands away from home. The younger generation of players is better equipped to deal with that, because they are educated about that."

Arsenal travel to Stoke on Sunday as they look to reclaim top spot in the Premier League table.
