'I was a dumb little kid at Manchester United'

    2736652_heroa.jpg

Manchester United midfielder Nick Powell insists he wants to prove that he is not a “dumb little kid” during his loan spell at Hull City.

The 21-year-old was signed by Sir Alex Ferguson from Crewe in 2012 but has made only nine senior appearances.

Powell, who has moved to Hull until the end of the season, has also spent time on loan at Wigan Athletic and Leicester City, and insists his latest move is an opportunity to prove a point.

"I have read papers, comments, pretty much everything said about me," Powell told the Hull Daily Mail.

"I am not a dumb little kid anymore like I used to be, who just did as I wanted. I have realised you have got to play the game in a way, the football game.

"You cannot say certain things, you cannot do certain things, I feel like I have been perceived as a lost cause, and a maverick but I feel that is not the truth.

"The only way to do that is to play my football and to show people I am not injury prone or a nuisance.

"I am here to prove football is what I want to do and that I am going to reach the heights that I was meant to reach. The last three years have been hard but this is a new challenge."

Bale agent slams Real Madrid exit rumours

    gareth-bale_1thxqf5vufb5c1v3mn1wx17rvl.jpg

Gareth Bale's agent has angrily denied rumours that Real Madrid are looking to sell the forward due to concerns over his injury record.

Bale, 26, suffered a calf problem last month and is unlikely to be fit for the derby with Atletico Madrid on Saturday after suffering another setback in his recovery sessions.

A report in Spain has suggested that members of the Madrid hierarchy are now exploring the prospect of offloading the former Tottenham star at the end of the season, given his track record of fitness problems at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Bale, who joined Real from Spurs for a world record £85.3m fee in 2013, had already suffered two separate muscle injuries prior to his current knock this season.

But his agent, Jonathan Barnett, has hit back at claims Real are looking to cash in on his client, telling the Daily Mirror: "It's a completely rubbish story made by an irresponsible and totally ill-informed journalist."Bale has scored 13 goals in his 15 appearances in La Liga this season, while also registering eight assists.

Icardi wants Inter stay despite receiving offers

    mauro-icardi-cropped_1tgc7brgwoiho1d9v52sz167vp.jpg

Inter skipper Mauro Icardi has revealed he has received offers from other clubs, but is adamant he has no intention of leaving the Serie A side any time soon.

The Argentine attacker has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League in recent months, with Manchester United and Arsenal believed to be among his admirers.Nevertheless, Icardi insists he is not interested in a transfer and is desperate to lead Inter to success.

"I've had a few offers but I want to stay here and lift trophies with this club," the 23-year-old told Inter Channel."I'm the captain and I want to achieve great things with Inter."I've always shouldered my responsibility ever since I joined the club and I think the fans appreciate that.

"I've been given this opportunity as captain and I'd love to become a club legend like [Javier] Zanetti. Anyone would want to enjoy the same success he had."

Inter have dropped to fifth place in the table after a number of disappointing results, but Icardi has not given up hope of finishing in the top three and securing Champions League football.

"We had a superb first half of the season, but sadly the second half hasn't gone as we wanted," he added."We have to aim for third place now to get where the club wants to be and start playing European football again."

Icardi has netted 11 goals in 23 Serie A outings this term after scoring 22 times in 36 league games last season.

Knocking out 'horny' Man Utd would be a miracle - Midtjylland boss

    louisvangaaljessthorup-cropped_1f9c7x3vw605h16bjq2msnjfvc.jpg

FC Midtjylland boss Jess Thorup says it will be a miracle if his side knock Manchester United out of the Europa League, however ‘horny’ Louis van Gaal’s players might be.

The Dutchman revealed on Wednesday that he asks his side to be “hungry, and a lot of times I use the word ‘horny’” when speaking of the need to match the desire shown by the Danes in their 2-1 first-leg win last week.

But Thorup has admitted that it would still take a lot for his club to progress, agreeing with sporting director Claus Steinlein’s assertion that it remains a “miracle” scenario for Midtjylland to overcome United.

“I just heard that two minutes ago in the car outside the stadium and we were laughing about the world horny,” Thorup told a press conference of Van Gaal’s earlier comments.

“Of course our team must be ready for the occasion. The players must see this as a regular game. Some of the guys might be Manchester United fans but tomorrow they are playing for FC Midtjylland and they won't underestimate that.

“I don’t know what the word ‘miracle’ is but in football a club like FC Midtjylland, 17 years old and achieving what it has achieved this year, now plays Manchester United, one of the biggest clubs in the world. Yes, it would be a miracle.”

Thorup believes it was a sense of achievement in itself that Van Gaal imitated a move learned from watching Midtjylland on the way to United’s 3-0 FA Cup victory over Shrewsbury Town on Monday.

Juan Mata’s goal from a free-kick involved a trio of players standing in front of the goalkeeper’s eyeline, and the Dutchman admitted afterwards it was something he had picked up from Thorup’s side.

“I saw the game, and I saw the goal and the things he said afterwards,” said the 46-year-old. “If he can be inspired by something FC Midtjylland can do that is a great honour.”

The second leg of the round of 32 fixture kicks off at Old Trafford on Thursday at 20:05 GMT, with United needing a 1-0 victory or better to advance to the last 16.

Dybala: I rejected Inter for Juventus

    paulodybala-cropped_1fglbquxnd3mv1a30qrc3oy8f2.jpg

Paulo Dybala has revealed that he turned down the chance to join Inter last summer in favour of a move to Juventus. The Argentina international had caught the attention of a number of a clubs after a stellar 2014-15 campaign with Palermo, with both Inter and Juve keen to sign him.

Inter coach Roberto Mancini even called Dybala to discuss a potential move, but the forward says he was quick to make it clear he was not interested in a transfer to San Siro.

"Before joining Juventus I had a talk with Mancini," the 22-year-old was quoted as saying by Corriere dello Sport."I thanked him for his call, but I always wanted to join Juventus because they are the stronger team."

A move to Inter would have seen Dybala link up with compatriot Mauro Icardi, whom he believes is quite similar to Juventus team-mate Mario Mandzukic.

"Mauro is a striker who is at his best inside the area," added Dybala."I am more of a support striker. Mauro is a bit like Mandzukic. They have the same role.

"He is doing well and I am happy for him because he is also an Argentine. Maybe we will play together for Argentina one day."

PSV 0-0 Atletico Madrid: No way through for Spaniards despite Pereiro red

    2746382_heroa.jpg

Goalkeeper Jeroen Zoet put in a fine performance to help 10-man PSV to a 0-0 draw in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 encounter versus Atletico Madrid at the Philips Stadion on Wednesday.

The Netherlands international made a superb save to deny Antoine Griezmann in the opening 45 minutes, while he also proved to be too much of an obstacle for Koke.Diego Godin did beat the PSV shot-stopper with a header from a corner after the break, but his effort was deservedly cancelled out for a foul on Hector Moreno.

PSV were dealt a major blow when Gaston Pereiro was sent off for two bookings midway through the second period, with Atletico pushing hard for a winner.

Diego Simeone's men were unable to capitalise on their numerical advantage, though, with Zoet parrying a shot from Gabi and Fernando Torres firing over as it remained scoreless.

As a result, the tie remains finely balanced ahead of the return leg at the Vicente Calderon on March 15.

Luciano Vietto came close to opening the scoring after just four minutes when he lifted the ball over Zoet following Gabi's long ball, but Jeffrey Bruma did well to track back and clear the ball off the goal-line.

Koke was next to threaten for Atletico after escaping the attentions of his marker following another fine ball out from the back, but his chipped effort from inside the area lacked the height to surprise Zoet, who was able to make the save.

Zoet excelled himself further on the half-hour mark, rushing from his goal to deny Griezmann with a superb one-handed save after the France international had beaten the offside trap.

A quick combination between Pereiro and Davy Propper afforded the latter an excellent opportunity inside the box but the midfielder’s attempt was straight at Jan Oblak, with Jurgen Locadia's shot from the rebound blocked by Juanfran.

Koke breathed a sigh of relief 10 minutes into the second half when he nearly beat his own keeper after intercepting Jetro Willems' cross from the left, with the ball eventually going just wide for a corner.Godin thought he had broken the deadlock after heading home on the hour-mark, only for the referee to disallow the centre-back's goal for climbing on Moreno.

PSV were reduced to 10 men in the 68th minute when Pereiro received his second booking after clattering into the head of Godin with his shoulder and Atletico immediately pinned the hosts back inside their own half.Gabi looked dangerous with a powerful long-range strike, which was parried by the excellent Zoet, before substitute Torres fired over from close range.

Jorrit Hendrix lost possession inside his own half in the 78th minute, allowing Angel Correa to set up Torres, but the former Chelsea striker's shot deflected wide off a defender.

Maxime Lestienne nearly gave PSV a dramatic winner late on with an ambitious volley after being set up by Hendrix, but his attempt sailed wide to leave the tie intriguingly poised.

Dynamo Kiev 1-3 Manchester City: Pellegrini's side take control of tie

    2746472_heroa.jpg

Manchester City took control of their Champions League last-16 tie with Dynamo Kiev with a 3-1 victory in the first leg in Ukraine.

Manuel Pellegrini fielded his strongest possible starting line-up after resting several senior players for Sunday's FA Cup thrashing at Chelsea, with the recalled Sergio Aguero requiring just 15 minutes to open the scoring.

Kiev, whose last competitive fixture came in the group stage against Maccabi Tel Aviv on December 9, were second-best to City in the first half, who doubled their lead when David Silva finished off a fine team move.City were the only side in the last 16 who failed to keep a clean sheet in the group stage, and their defence was breached for the ninth Champions League game in a row when Vitaliy Buyalsky's shot deflected in off Nicolas Otamendi.

The visitors remained compact to keep Dynamo's attack - and Andriy Yarmolenko in particular - largely frustrated, while Joe Hart made a fine late stop to deny Buyalskiy a second and preserve City's lead.

And Yaya Toure took advantage of his goalkeeper's efforts with a stunning late third goal that will see City head into the return leg at the Etihad Stadium confident of qualifying for the quarter-finals for the first time.

Kiev started promisingly in front of a vociferous support - returning after a UEFA-imposed absence in their side's final group game - with Yarmolenko forcing Hart to tip the ball onto the top of the crossbar after City failed to clear a free-kick.

But the visitors quickly found their feet and capitalised on dismal home defending to snatch the lead. Silva's corner was nodded down by Toure and Aguero was allowed time and space to chest the ball down and smash a finish past Oleksandr Shovkovskiy from just six yards out.

Aguero then fizzed a shot just wide and Toure forced Shovkovskiy into a smart low stop on the break, before another slick passing move doubled City's lead before the break. Aguero brought down Gael Clichy's clip into the left channel and backheeled the ball into the path of Raheem Sterling, who crossed for Silva to tap in at the far post.

Aguero dragged a shot wide after being played through one-on-one by Fernandinho before Fernando nodded Silva's free-kick over from six yards as City pressed on before the break.

Yarmolenko arrowed an effort past the far post as Dynamo looked for a lifeline early in the second half, and a stroke of fortune handed them just that with 58 minutes played. Otamendi's clearing header bounced out to Buyalskiy, whose half-volley from the edge of the area took a deflection off the centre-back and nestled in the corner of the net.

Although Silva was denied a penalty after a challenge from Danilo Silva, Pellegrini's side lost their grip on the contest as they began to be pegged back by Dynamo, who saw substitute Miguel Veloso just fail to control Yarmolenko's pass with the visitors outnumbered at the back.

Fernandinho had his own penalty appeals waved away when he went to ground after twisting his way into the area, while City had Hart to thank at the other end as the England goalkeeper saved superbly low to his right to deny Buyalskiy.

Toure then headed wide from just five yards out but soon made amends to put City in the driving seat with the goal of the game in the dying minutes, playing a neat one-two with Fernandinho before bending a shot left-footed beyond Shovkovskiy from the edge of the area.

Cavani: I always try to respect PSG

    edinsoncavani-cropped_o5xu2kvqy4t11mixbys74sbqn.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani has reaffirmed his loyalty to the French champions amid talk of a possible departure at the end of the season.

Cavani has been a much-maligned figure since joining PSG from Napoli in 2013, with the Uruguay international criticised for underperforming in the biggest matches.
The 29-year-old, who has been forced to play second-fiddle to Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the French capital, has reportedly been attracting attention from the likes of Manchester United. But Cavani insists he will continue to give his all for PSG, who are still battling on multiple fronts as the end of the season approaches.

"I respect my club, like all those I played until the last day," Cavani is quoted as telling Mexican television channel TDN."I wear the shirt of this club, I will defend it as if I had been supporting the club all my life.

"The only thing I can say is that, beyond the ups and downs that I had since I was there, of all the debates that had on me, I have always tried to respect the team, the club and the jersey at the time of entering the field.

"I will try to continue like this, to give the best football depends on many things, so you never know… I hope things continue like this as long as possible."

Cavani has been forced to play a wide role in the PSG starting XI to accommodate Ibrahimovic, a situation the former Palermo star has spoken out against.

But when pressed on the issue, Cavani added: "I do not like to talk about it because this situation is not new. When I arrived at PSG I played striker, even if I was free to move. I had to adapt to a new position, I got prepared.

"What can I say? I'm trying to do what I can to play as many matches possible, because that's what I like. We'll see what happens. I'll finish the season in the best of ways."

    Griezmann annoyed with PSV draw

    griezmann-bruma-cropped_x3xgp958ynrh1ntkih2c0ccsu.jpg

Antoine Griezmann was unable to hide his frustration with Atletico Madrid's scoreless draw against PSV in Wednesday's Champions League encounter in Eindhoven.

Diego Simeone's men had a number of chances to score an important away goal in the first leg of the round of 16 tie, but they eventually failed to break the deadlock as Luciano Vietto and Griezmann missed big chances, while Diego Godin saw a goal disallowed.

PSV were reduced to 10 men halfway through the second half following Gaston Pereiro's dismissal, but eventually held on to record a valuable draw, much to the frustration of Griezmann."It's annoying to just draw when you want to win," the France international told the official Uefa website.

"It wasn’t easy; it was a difficult game. We worked hard at the back and then the chance I got was a shame. I didn't get my body shape quite right and the goalkeeper did well. But it doesn't matter. I'm still full of confidence."When they went down to 10 players, it was perhaps more difficult because they closed shop at the back.

"It's not so bad. We're at home next time and it's a boost. At home we’re comfortable with our fans who push us on in all we do and I’m sure we’ll do well.
