I have an engineering degree from a foreign uni.

When I returned to SL, I thought of registering with IESL so went there with the documents.

One guy looked at the documents and said "you have a degree from a very good university", then went to another office to bring a stack of files.

After going through the files he said "but your university is not in the IESL list of approved unis, can you ask them to send these documents?"

Its a crazy bureaucracy. I didn't bother. I never needed IESL registration for any of the jobs I did. You only need it if you are planning to do a government job. Otherwise, nobody cares about IESL. Not in SL, not in abroad.

PS. Few years later, I was working in a job which required the use of structural drawings approved by chartered engineers. I've seen so many errors in those approved drawings, I've lost faith in IESL.

In my case, I’ve got a UK uni degree in Electrical & Electronic Engineering (Washington Accord accredited). On top of that I’m already in the process of getting IET (UK) Associate membership (MIET) also, so international recognition part is covered.
Reason I’m looking at IESL is because I was going to apply for an engineer position at Mobitel, and they specifically ask for some kind of IESL membership. Otherwise honestly I wouldn’t bother going through all this hassle.
From ur point of view, is it worth the effort to chase IESL membership? Or is it mainly useful only for govt jobs here?

I worked in the telco sector in the past but not with Mobitel. Nobody bothered to ask for IESL membership. If they specifically ask for IESL for the job you target, you don't really have a choice though. Otherwise, its not worth the time.

If you are interested in the telco field, apply for ZTE, Huawei, Ericsson and other managed service providers who will give you hands on experience. So called engineers who are working at telcos don't do any work and don't have much hands-on skills.

I don't have any of those memberships but I admit I changed fields several times and now in a senior position in the UK but not in an engineering field.

IESL is good for nothing; it still exists because IESL et. al brought the parliment act to form the engineering council.
I don't need to comment on their quality standards eh? Look at the state of our national grid.
Other than that; all they do is: maintaining a constitutional discrimination policy (Globally, there are only three levels of engineering professional registrations, and here we have five!), and putting up some shows time to time. JIY is probably the only good thing they have.
It doesn't even serve their own members (unless you are an EE).

There is a title called 'affiliate' too. Better not fall for that. It creates more divide than helping.

True. Gotta admit, IESL is trying hard to enforce their rules on all organizations. Even Mobitel didn't care about IESL until very recently.

Also this isn't practical. If this is to be enforced, no more engineering designations for SEs

Thanks again bn. This is actually the job I’m planning to apply for. As you can see in the advert, they specifically ask for associate membership of IESL, so that’s why I’m trying to sort it out. Otherwise, I wouldn’t stress too much.

I actually did my first internship at Sri Lanka Telecom, so that’s also one of the reasons I interested in teleco field and thought Mobitel might be a good next step. I Tried to get in Dialog Axiata but haven't called for the interview

Also, I wanted to ask – how do you usually apply for jobs with ZTE, Huawei, Ericsson? I hardly ever see vacancies advertised publicly. Do i need a connection inside to get in, or do they have internship/graduate programs that people can apply for directly?
