The Ceylon Teachers Union (CTU) said money collections being carried out in schools are a threat to the free education system of the country.

“We have been expressing our concern regarding this matter on several occasions. However, the Education Ministry does not seem to have taken any measures to curb such activities from recurring in schools yet,” CTU General Secretary Joseph Stalin said.

According to Mr. Stalin a large number of schools including national schools are carrying out money collections charging substantially large sums of money from each student. He pointed out that the most recent incident of money collection occurred in several schools for the printing of papers for the second term test.

“The Education Ministry has issued several circulars prohibiting the money collection from students. Instead of reinforcing the circular regulations and ensuring that such incidents are curbed, the Minister himself seems to be encouraging such activities,” said Mr. Stalin.

Education Ministry Additional Secretary Hemantha Premathilake declined to comment on the issue.
