You think he would be able to play all the upcoming quadcore requiring games on his i3

He need 12k for the i5 upgrade
So go for 18 inch which is 12k less & use that money for the i5

Besides he's gonna go for either R9 270 or R6 265 so for sure i3 gonna bottleneck. And um sure this guy wont upgrade his setup for atleast 3,4 years
So on the longrun he's better off with a i5 + 18inch rather than i3 + 22inch FHD

i3s are generally treated as quad cores for gaming, since hyper threading is now advanced enough to emulate a core. An i3 can go all the way upto a GTX660 or R9 270 without bottlenecking.

In the long run, hes definitely better with a larger monitor and a faster graphics card. The higher the resolution, the more your graphics card matters and less your CPU matters. Why do you think they do CPU benchmarks with low resolutions? That's the only way they can shift the bottleneck to the CPU instead of the graphics card.

The most important thing is, the lower the resolution, the lower the detail and quality level in your games. If you've ever used a full HD or higher resolution monitor, you'll know. A game always looks better on medium at 2560x1440 than ultra at 1366x768.
