well mate, it's bit unfortunate that the fellow forum members did not give the due credits to you, since you posted the first reply related to GPS. maybe I'm lucky in that part i guess as you noticed, i joined this forum in 2007 and didn't post for sometime. well, maybe i waited this long until some interested topic to show up (Like the GPS thread here). it's unfortunate that i didn't found your posts before as i said earlier. no hard feelings about the credits. credit should go where it's due. since you working on the map (Correcting errors that City labels street Labels) I'm looking forward to hear about the success of it. as it that could help the other guys can use for their betterment. i very much interested in GPS technology. have seen it using for various technologies. GPS way point navigation (Something similar to micro pilot systems) which I'm still trying to understand and learn. so, yes it's great to know that there are more people that put good use of the technology.

GPS means positioning !!!!!!! the maps is a diferent matter!

there are people who say these things. thats acceptable i guess. half knowledge is even worse than complete knowledge is my opinion.

trust me when i tell u this, ive never used gps in my life until i got the E71. but like what others say in the post, gps alone is useless without a map. tho u can use it for marking points but thats all u can do with it without a map.

but ive come a long way since i started using this thing.

can show u a real route i took when i came down to colombo, ive never gone on that road before ever ok. but it showed me the way, and this road is near yala. so its pretty damn good is my opinion. coz i expected it not to show any errors in colombo and built up areas and show errors in un chartered roads/areas. but i was so wrong. and i got lost for real just one time and it helped me get back on track. not sure if uve realised this but down south more towards yala, all roads look similar at night so u can say whats north,south,east,west. and it was raining so hard that day. and me being a complete idiot, followed the gps exactly, and i just looked up, and nearly missed going through a house in a village.

ofcourse i dont look at the device while driving ok, incase u were wondering...

u can buy car phone holders at sunlanka near appolo hospital. on the gravel road one ok not the one opposite appolo as thats for audio,HID installations only. a must.... gps value of sunlanka 6.889276, 79.877815

have now fitted by SUV with HID xenons so i see better. man, what a difference HID makes as compared to halogens. i couldnt believe it until i saw it for myself..


to all garmin mobile xt users - change the default location format found in Settings/System/Location Format change to top most (hddd.ddddd) as google uses this format.

easier when u make your own POI. the following 6.889276, 79.877815 conforms to this standard. dont worry if u cant enter all numbers.

this goes out to all users of gps on phones or stand alone devices. wouldnt it be cool if all of u, mark checkpoints as u go along on a road and share with the community. and loading that via POI with proximity alerts, gives u a early warning of checkpoints ahead.

some checkpoints are permanent ones. but be careful. a useful tip, mark the checkpoint when approaching it, say 50m ahead of u, it doesnt have to be pin point accurate. im sure this would benefit all people. as who doesnt hate being stopped for nothing and getting searched.

I'm bit afraid of putting it on a phone holder since using GPS is illegal and if a Cop found out in a check point I'll be in a big mess. have been using GPS for a while Using E51 with external GPS. but once i got the E71, i've started to experimented it bit further. found out about Garmin XT and installed it.

About HIDs. I've installed it in my car but only as a low beam. got it down through ebay via a friend in US.

no no, u missed the point. a phone holder is either which sticks to the windscreen like a radar detector which i use or sticky onto top of ur dash or, on the A/C vent. but i suggest u get the A/c vent thing, dont use it as it is as if u break hard, the whole thing comes down crashing onto the floor. just run a wire tie ( network cabling thingy), two better, one for each side and lock it in place. u cant remove it afterwards. the A/c vents are always lower than the dash anyways. but u might loose some cooling effect as it covers one vent partially.

as for phone and external antenna, thats suicide. e71 better, can pass as a phone, like i said earlier. toggle a quick press button activation for garmin and familiarise urself with how to hide the garmin when approaching a checkpoint by pressing the d pad. and lastly pray that it doesnt speak, left turn ahead or checkpoint ahead when stopped. suggest u keep the music on half way also, so u can jokingly say, weird music these days no kiyala.

i use it in colombo. got stopped one time at night, army guy ok, its mounted on the A/c vent and it was showing the map. he looked at it and didnt ask me anything, but if he asked me, id say, its a screen saver to keep the display from burning up. they dont know jack anyways...

with regard to gps. no cop/army what ever can take ur gps if its a phone as it doubles as a phone. but dedicated gps, u have no way to hide its true purpose. go read other forums in elakiri, where one guy i think its malaka, got stopped at a checkpoint and polic asked what that is, he was using a laptop and a gps antenna which has to sit on ur dash. and he said what it was. the cop said its illegal and let him go. he was lucky.

dedicated gps devices are a no no unless u want to go to jail. a phone gps u can.

read other posts on gps phones here. its funny to read. besides its illegal to bring a dedicated gps marked 'gps or garmin' to srilanka. but u can bring down a gps phone to sl hand carrying it. thats legal.

a funny thing happened to me the other day. i was going down nawala road, and u get a checkpoint at the bridge ok. i had my gps runnin but no destination set, so it auto dims after time out. i thought i was gonna get pulled over. luckily for me, he didnt. but soon as i passed the place where u pull over and hand ur ID and shit, the phone sudenly said ' satellite reception lost'. i thought fuck,... lucky break...

as usual, dont turn vol up 100%, keep at 80 or 60. for e71, 60 is ok. for 5800 need to go to 80 as i cant hear it otherwise.

have ur music on halfway also, as that way u can jokingly say its the music...

dont stall though ok...

Hey guys i'm having a problem installing this application first of all i downloaded the application then copied all the files in USB storage mode to ma mem card and then i installed the app which was located(E:GarminMobileXT.sis) Not inside the folder.....
After the installation there were 4 options

1.Purchase and go
2.Begin Free trial
3.Enter product key
4.Connect to a garmin GPS

I selected the 4th option and then went to tools->Settings->About

2) Launch Garmin, go to Settings -> About (Make note of your UNLOCK ESN .WRITE IT SOMEWHERE.THIS IS YOUR UNIT ID)

I couldnt find Unlock ESN All i found was
IMEI
IMSI
Card id

what can i do? plz help me out guys oh n m using a 5800

Just paste those files inside E:\Garmin in your mem card. unlock esn should be there. just try reinstall and see.

its not that simple mate. there are more steps involved.

1) get mem card ID nos (called mem ID or something) - Card ID ( checked ur post)
2) enter that to unlocker to generate the mem card key
3) copy paste (in the unlocker, the top set of numbers, top set is for mem card unlock key, bottom set is for unlocking maps key ) those numbers to a file called SW.UNL ( make sure it ends as SW.UNL and not txt
4) copy the SW.UNL to phone mem card, top level directory inside of (parent directory) Garmin folder
5) copy srilanka map to /Garmin top level directory and rename it as GMAPSUPP.IMG

one sure way of testing if u got the memory card unlocked is, after u do the above steps except 5th, is when u select gps signal bar on left top, in the section 'enable /or disable' there should be 2 options, use external gps or use internal gps. if u got the mem card unlock code wrong, that option to select 'use internal gps' is disabled.

SW.UNL and GMAPSUPP.IMG case sensitive, all caps.

have u noticed something strange bout phone memory cards, i mean, u have to install garmin using a data cable but to copy srilanka map and sw.unl u need bluetooth, as if u plug it in as usb cable and set it to Mass Storage, the memory card gives errors like I/O error, corruption.

i transfer data to/from mem card of phones via bluetooth. might take a bit longer but it works.

as always do a full backup of the whole memory card as soon as u buy a phone and then delete all unwanted stuff on it. and if something does go wrong, u can always copy data back to it.

leave the /garmin dirs intact, the 2 files u need are SW.UNL and GMAPSUPP.IMG which both go to parent directory of Garmin on mem card. no where else.

as to renaming, use the inbuilt file manager on all Nokia E and N series. make sure ur in mem card, as both phone mem and memory card looks alike on file manager.

the GPX folder is where, when u do a full backup of ur garmin, the file named as current.gpx gets saved in to. that u can copy to pc via bluetooth. safer to transfer via bluetooth.

the folder POI is where u install POI's. but it installs itself as a single file in that folder. which u cant edit afterwards. thats why u need to keep original POI files stored as csv separate on the pc as everytime u install POI whether new or old, every POI stored on phone gets erased.

and when installing POI (which u need the data cable) u can optionally set proximity alerts so it functions as a radar sort of. target distance is trial and error.

summarize - usb data cable needed for 1) install garmin on phone, 2) install POI using POI loader.
everything else use bluetooth, safer and less chance of corruption. and do weekly backups of mem card if u do store data on it. incase of worst case.

and dont forget to share points marked, with the community.

to all who uses Garmin Mobile XT, set up your phones this way so you dont come to a halt when you try to use google earth/maps with garmin mobile xt as google earth/maps uses one setting and garmin uses another setting. am talking bout 5.900189,80.529785 format and 6°46'42.78"N 79°58'59.15"E formats. more accurate method is 5.900189,80.529785 which is set by

load garmin. spanner button, System/Location Format set to hddd.dddd as opposed to hddd.mm.mmm

u also need to config google earth to show as hddd.dddd format, google earth options/3d View/Show Lat/Lon as Decimal Degrees not as Degrees,Minutes,Seconds.

coz, sometimes, when u save points in google earth/maps, the point marked is like this, 6°46'42.7832"N 79°58'59.1567"E - these are not the correct values but, so when u try to enter that to phone, u cant, as where u enter the seconds has only 3 nos, not 4.

lol. machan stand on ur head with the phone on ur ass on ur roof. might help get gps signals..

if u dont use gps day to day, then initial time to signal lock is longer. helps if u enable A-GPS. speeds up the lock...

need clear skies... but not always...

good luck

with A-GPS, u can lock in 2-5 secs...

check ur phone to find where it is and enable Assisted GPS and Inbuilt GPS, disable Network Assisted GPS and Bluetooth GPS

point to ur 3G access point in access point and set positioning server to supl.nokia.com

it uses 3g to access the website to get a signal lock and then it disconnects...

Settings/System/Location Format/ hddd.ddddd (1st one), its set to 2 by default

just see for urself, go to Where To/Position to enter a destination manually. u take a point from google maps. which is like this

14°28'45.22"N 79°53'7.52"E . uve set your phone to 2nd one, which allows only N xx xx xxx E xxx xx xxx . how u gonna enter 14°28'45.22"N 79°53'7.52"E when there is no . (dot)

also, ull have probs when saving in the sense, u find value on google, try to enter on phone, u cant. and, u mark u a point on phone and u enter that to google maps. it also doesnt work.

having it 14.414128° 79.892852° xx.xxxxxx xx.xxxxxx u can use on either.

im retiring from navigation developement

dear elakiri users, It is I who started this whole navigation thing for srilanka and shed light into its existence. I proved that, navigation is possible even for a country like ours and with POI, and developed even further with POI reverse engineered from google earth/maps etc. Am proud of the tremendous progress it has made in a few months since my first post and the avid number of fans aswell. But, due to time contraints and other issues, am henceforth stopping further developing the navigation for srilanka. Ive posted very technical descriptions of how to get it working even for a newbie upwards and how to add new POI and share POI with the community. Now, it is upto you folks to share amonst yourselves and develop it further.

Am uploading all the files ive worked on so far. my complete works are henceforth attached.
