The Possible Option for GPS in SL is Garmin.

    Get a Nokia with S60v3 (E75, N82, N95 8G... )
Go through Gsmarena. Anything with S60v3 and A-GPS is good.
Check for a phone with a larger and a brighter display with a long battery life.

Works on 5800 and N97 (S60v5) As well, but due to a software limitation, the app freezes once in a while. Can make it work on Samsung Omnia as well.

i have a 5800 navigation edition. and its very fast. even inside my home it gets a sat-lock withhin 2-3 seconds. thatswhy i like it much.
im wonder some guys need to wait 2-3 minutes.

yeah sure ill make this thread more popular.
your work is great, keep it up!

hey guys/girls. thanks for the comments and all.

like jason said, ur better off with nokia E71,E72,E75 etc. but avoid nokia 5800,N97 as they freeze and N97 have gps issues big time.

as for battery life, if u want the best battery life for the money u spend on a phone, trust me, ull thank me later. get a E71, its a good phone, i used it when i started mapping sl. ok, now, u better sit coz it will blow ur mind... ordinary dedicated garmin gps like etrex, vista handhelds work at best for 4-5hrs and can store 500 POI only. Nokia phones running GMXT have no limitation as far as i can see, ive uploaded 1 million poi as a test, which is 256MB of data on a memory card btw and it works. with 1GB memory cards, u can store 33 million POI based on my calculations... gettin back to battery life, dedicated gps is 4hrs, E71 with gsm cellular coverage enabled and GMXT running together with real time gps data logging, ive clocked it at 12hrs continuous usage. these are my field tested results. if i turned off all cellular coverage signals, im sure, id get even more.

but for marking POI, ur better with a E75, which is what i use, i use 2 of E75s, one for track recording/navigation, one for poi marking only. reason is, ive put these devices through their paces in the field and tested the limits and beyond. if i were to buy a new phone, id buy another E75, its that good. tho, now its a old phone... for gps, nothing else beats the price/performance/gps accuracy.

on a side note, if anyone of you all have Nokia 5800 phones and are having freezing problems, i can point u in the direction of Jason who has corrected the problems once and for all with his own firmware, u have to contact him for his help on the subject, he may charge a nominal fee for the service, but, to me, thats worth the money u pay him for solving the gps problems u face with the phone. and ull thank him each day when u use GMXT.

    thanks

well said jason. id like to state this as a testament to above.

our ( Ironbutcher_x & Team) gps designs were made from scratch, everything that can be optimized, has been done so, and will continue to be further optimized in the coming days/months/years. my primary goal right from the start was to give this away free for the benefit of all. you cant put a price on true knowledge and am a living testament to that commitment. we shall continue to provide srilanka, free navigation to the best of our abilities. but, as before, i ask, if anyone of you want to contribute to the POI database, your more than welcome to do so but please try to send very accurate - +- 5m gps accuracy POI, more detailed the better so we can enhance the database even further. if u can also send in the tracks together with the POI datasets, it would further enable us to verify the POI data and make necessary POI updates even quicker for the benefit of all.

and unlike other designs, our product is cross platform compatible from day one, and no technical knowledge is needed to operate this software apart from familiarizing yourself with the various functions of GMXT. to summarise, if your phone whether a sony, nokia or samsung, has external memory card storage capabilities and if you can find the GMXT for your phone, all you need to do is to copy paste the "Poi.GPI" into the memory card and it will work henceforth... that was the way i designed the system...

and, we try to do, 2 bi monthly or monthly POI updates on a regular basis as all findings are posted in EK first. which is, even, a first, even for us, to continously update POI and no other gps company in srilanka if any, would even do.

please note that, this on going project is 3 years old as of today, so its not a new thing to compete with first - Dialog satnav and 2nd - Sunlanka satnav or 3rd - Sala Prosat in any way. and, all data in the form of POI is individually marked on location as per POI shown at that time and no outside 3rd party vendors contributed to this on going project.

machan how did u get the GMXT professional edition??
and how to see street names and places on the map?

And what the difference between ur V40 custom firmware and V50 official release?

There is No Professional Edition, Its a Splash Screen Mod. You can see the Real Version in the About window.

Map names can be displayed using Ironbutcher_X's Mods, Specifically the Second Transparent Map. All credits to him and His Team.

V40 Custom is Made and Compiled by me using Nokia PNHT Tools. Search a Bit around and ul be able make one on ur own, its easy as ABC.

I dont like V50, as its a damn slow and full of bugs. I Got Rid of it within 3 days. On My Custom Firmware i have custom quad fonts including the sinhala Unicode font. Custom Ported Homescreens, Custom Icons, Faster Menu's , Custom Theme Effects and My Fav -> TrackID from Sony Ericsson. There's more than 40+ mods, and all of them can be found in Nokia Modding Sites. You just gotta be more creative with their tools. :-)
I have Attached a Bunch of Pics.

Ironbutcher_x & Team's GPS work as shown on Google Earth

below are a series of pics of various areas of srilanka we have mapped and final image named 16 shows everything combined into 1 google earth file. the previous file 15 shows only town names file of 640 poi...

what u need to look for is the white checkboxes with black centre, also turn to vision to the right hand corner of the pics to see how far up this data actually fits on one page, actual nos of POI is triple, quad triple of whats shown...

looks like i cant upload section by section...

any1 want to take a shot at this problem ?

    maps.info.lk

    in that page -

( go to google search/ set record type from ALL to Srilanka) then u get roughly 50,000 POI.

    rough calculation

    86 pages =A
    A-Z=26 letters
    26*86=2236

    at 20 records a page

    20*2236=49192 POI

do u want to do this n send me the csv ?

how fast can u do 50,000 POI and output to csv file ? and post to EK aswell.

The best thing is if one need a better map to wait somebody to
rip the map from Salapro or from IGO maps & convert it to img format! Sometime we may be able to use IGO but I couldn't find only Sri Lanka map(all with asia >2GB)

here is the restored zip, read the 'how to' on installation instructions.. attached pic in the zip shows how many POI have been loaded on the poi.gpi file...

    more updates to come...

as always, when new poi updates are posted, previous " poi " posts automatically become obsolete. as new data sets are 'additions' to previous datasets posted by me. just keep that in mind..

this dataset is completely redesigned and optimized and future modifications are in the design plans...

for the novice or expert, just copy paste, NOT move, the "Poi.Gpi" to memory card/garmin/POI/ folder. no more messing with POI Loader or setting proximity alerts, as all have been taken care of with each gpi file.

if previous Poi.gpi is present in that folder when copying this file over, just over write it.. not merge old and new files ok...

do keep a extra poi.gpi copy in the memory card root folder, as when garmin crashes, u tend to loose the "custom poi" datasets aswell, so a quick copy/paste from memory card root folder back to mem card/garmin/POI/ restores the deleted poi.gpi.

please let me know where can i downlad the POI

please let me know where can i downlad the POI

dude, download the zip file, unzip it. there is a 'how to' txt file, read it. its all there.

if ur referring to from where u can download 'other' POI from, there are none and even the ones there on the net are not reliable and accurate as ours.

our data is hand marked at that specific location, not by using Google Earth to map any of the given 2000 POI as shown in the attached pic inside the zip file....

may i suggest you read the 'Garmin Mobile XT' user manual before u start using this as data found inside 'Custom POI' section of 'Garmin Mobile XT' app...
