It's Avigan. It'a a 30 year old Japanese invented drug - Favipiravir - a broad spectrum viral RNA polymerase inhibitor.
It was effective against a wide range influenza viruses, including those causing fatal haemorrhagic fever and potentially untreatable RNA viral infections.
It was used to treat Ebola as well. The Japanese must have started production again at that time because they sent it to Africa.
With the introduction of Tamiflu in 2000, this drug faded away from normal use.
Avigan works in a unique way - it inhibits the virus making copies of itself by blocking an enzyme needed for replication. Tamiflu works much differently. Tamiflu stops the virus from infecting one cell to the next - but Avigan stops the replication of the virus within the cell itself.
As for your question. yes - if the Health Ministry can certainly get it in no time by contacting the Chinese manufacturer. The GMOA can request as an urgent need.
