I wonder somebody had ever received the private key after paying them.

Also, I saw a very scary case where they bypassed the 2-factor authentication

I personally do not know anyone... but how do you think some companies that promise high data recovery rates from ransomware? They use another front to pay the hackers.

As for the other fb story... I wonder whether it's just another fakebook story.
(BTW 2FA or even MFA can be hacked)

I read about this on multiple sites that you shouldn't use SMS for 2FA and to use an authenticator app instead cause attackers can intercept those messages and retrieve the codes. :dull:

I have doubts about that facebook post too. But, can it be done with a third party app installed on our phone?

Yes... SMS authentication is near obsoleted. You have to use Apps like Google Authenticator, Authy etc.
These codes stay with the app even if a hacker manages to port your phone number to another phone. The codes do timeout in a short time and easy as you just tap the App instead of rekeying the digits from an SMS.

 I've been using one ever since I read about it. How about making a basic security guide including all this stuff for those who aren't aware of them? It could be pretty useful specially in this era of crypto ransomware :baffled:
