Yes, you can use this phone as a modem as it supports 3G, I think this supports upto 7.2mbps, there won't be a much difference in speed between modem and a phone.
You can use it, no problem.

As I remember, once Hutch 3G also recommended this phone to use with Hutch HSDPA (not in Sri Lanka).
