I have build a network ame as yours using the Desktop and Laptop just like yours, one running Xp and the other Vista.
Very important that you turn off any firewall (including windows firewall) before doing this! After the netork is setup successfully firewalls can be turned on with appropriate settings configured in the firewalls.
No need of cross cables for this becoz if your laptop is probably a new one the cross funtionality is built in ot its network card so Simply USE a DIRECT LAN CABLE.
After the cable is connected to both the computers, a IP is automatically assigned to both the computers. This takes some time. (1-2 minutes) So wait!!! You dont need to worry about any IP configurations.
The network card iceon is XP in the system tray might dissapear, bcoz of the settings. Its ok. All you can do is check in Vista whether it says in the network icon at the system tray (when mouse is moved over it) "Access Local only"
If all is well you can browse one computer from another. Of course there should be some folders shared on either of it to be able to browse.
