They were too busy proposing reforms to transfer executive powers from the president to PM and to devolve power from the central government (as they promised to Tamils)

so then part of the problem is the political system and its members. it includes president and the opposition. attention should be on reforming/improving the system so next time we will get better administrators. also as people we need to change our mindset. we need to appoint right people and let them do their jobs. so we don't have to involve in criticising on these things. national security and other policy matters should be dealt with the relevant people in the office and should not be talked and analysed in the streets and social media.

The opposition had the advantage of an executive president with absolute power over the parliament and absolute power in the parliament when they were in power. They managed to run a whole terrorist organization to the ground and maintain the peace until they were defeated.

You didn't see people analyzing and criticizing national security when the LTTE was being beaten to a pulp right... sounds to me we had right people and they did their jobs right back then

maybe because of buddhism or maybe its my lack of knowledge, i don't feel good about war. i feel wars should be avoided and try other methods as much as possible to solve them by other means. you are of the premise that ltte was defeated and war was ended. but can we fully end people's feelings without kindness and understanding. when a tamil terrorist was killed how about his/her family. as long as they don't have an understanding, they will feel for their family member and can develop an hatred towards his/her killing. so can we suppress their feeling. can we kill everyone? how do we know what they think. how do control someone's feelings? can any intelligent service understand what people think?

i hope all political parties get together now and come with a national policy leaving out their own agendas for a moment for the sake of the country and its people.
