If you are going to buy a Hybrid car, you probably digg around and looks for pros and cons of the vehicle. You might ask your friends, search on the net, going to forum and ask questions and blah blah blah… You’ll hear lot of things. Majority bad news and little good news. That is the real situation currently in Sri Lanka. But, you may not known, lot of those bad news are rumors. Anti-Hybrid guys are generating fantastic stories and news that discourage to buy hybrid. Let’s see reality.

Trained staff and equipments are not available in here to maintain and repair your hybrid

Well, Somewhat. Dealers still not officially start support for Hybrid vehicles. We have to understand what those regular maintenance and repairs that we have to do. Hybrid vehicles do have petrol engine, just like other cars. Therefore we have to do regular maintenance like changing engine oil and oil filters, eventually air filters, inspecting breaks and other mechanical elements, rotating tires etc… All you have to do is, being your car to particular dealer. They will do it for you. Toyota Lanka dealers and Stafford Motors dealers (Honda) are very comfortable with it. Do not require special technology and tools at all.

What happen if you met and accident and damaged to hi-tech system or got a fault in hybrid system?
Well, if your car is Honda, no problem at all. Stafford motors importing Civic Hybrid, meaning they will start hybrid repairing very soon. I heard, Toyota Lanka sent a team to Japan for special training regarding Hybrid maintenance. One of my friend visited Toyota Lanka , few weeks ago for servicing his Prius. Stuff has said him, Equipments are ready now and once the team returned after the training, they’ll start officially support hybrids. Toyota Lanka was trying to officially import Prius before (http://www.toyota.lk/vehicle.php?id=prius) But, for some reason, they were unable to do so at that time.

Also, I saw following advertisement on Hit Ads, last week

    hybridcare.jpg

So far, there are around 8000 hybrids imported to here. This opens up huge opportunity for new hybrid repair businesses. There is a big potential to start hybrid repairing centers soon. Let’s see after 12 months. Just, drive patiently for now.

High Voltage battery replacement cost a lot

Yes. This is true. Reconditioned battery cost Rs.150,000 onward and brand new battery cost about 300,000. Problem is, how often we need to replace battery? After 100,000km or 150,000km. Not at all. Manufacturer provide warranty , 100,000km/10 years or 150,000km/10 years in US (depending on state lows), 150,000km/10 years in UK and Japan . Is that means, batter will die after this warranty period? Again, Not at all. For Toyota, battery strength remains 100% (like new battery) after this warranty period. I don’t have facts about Honda. I think it is no difference.
In Australia, they only replace two batteries so far, that is Prius (Gen 1) after 10 years and 500,000 km http://www.themotorreport.com.au/6042/prius-taxi-belts-out-half-a-million-klicks

Search on http://priuschat.com/ there are 200,000 miles club and 300,000 miles club. Only few of them replaced battery, lot of others still running with original battery. (Note: those are Miles, not Kilometers)

Somehow, if you wanted to buy a battery, it won’t be a problem since you can import from Indian Toyota dealer (They officially sell prius in India) , Japan or UK. In near future, you will be able to buy it from local shops too!

Ceylinco Insurance and Peoples insurance give a comprehensive coverage to battery. So, you have no risk there!

Hybrid Vehicles not suitable to Sri Lankan climate/whether or road conditions.

Another meaningless rumor. Indeed, Sri Lanka is a hard climate country. Lot of dust and high temperature. Other countries like US, UK and Japan has soft climate.

Well, Indian climate is much similar to Sri Lanka (sometime even hard), Last year Toyota start selling prius in India http://www.overdrive.in/story-news-general_news/toyota_goes_green_in_india-28392-0.html

Another fact is, We are importing vehicles from Japan over few decade. They are still running on our roads without any problem. So, what is the problem with the hybrids? Anti-Hybrid guys claim that hi-tech computer will fail in our country. That is sealed unit. So, no effect on climate condition.

Hybrids caught fire on accident because of high voltage battery

    Oh really? Who experienced it?

There is possibility to catch fire on accident because of fuel tank, like every other vehicle, but not on the battery. That technology didn’t developed by kids. Engineers know what the possible conditions are and they apply necessary safety strategies. If you ever been in a hybrid vehicle while starting it, you might heard "tik tik" sound. Every hybrid system has very high security rules to follow before release high voltage to its electrical system. It performs hundreds of tested every second to make sure vehicle is in proper condition to operate high voltage motor. If one of those tested got failed, immediately cut off high voltage supply to prevent damages. "tik tik" sound is from the high voltage controlling relays located near the battery.

Prius recalled by dealers due to manufacturing fault

This is true. Not affected all vehicles. They recalled Prius generation 3 modes manufactured from 2009 September to 2010 April, Only USA model. Because, Toyota detected inconsistency breaking on snowing roads. This didn’t happen to most of prius owners or even notice it.
    http://www.priusownersgroup.com/my-prius/recall-story/

In fact, we are not importing cars from USA (because it is left hand drive), We’ll never have snow on roads. Finally, Japan or UK models don’t have this issue at all. Even if they have, at least previous owners have already corrected it.

    http://andhrabusiness.com/NewsDesc....India-launch-unaffected-by-global-recall.html

I’d like to introduce who are the Anti-Hybrid fellows.

A guy call John (http://john1701a.com/) researched over 5 years and came up with a research report in order to properly introduce Anti-hybrid guys and their characteristics. (http://john1701a.com/prius/anti-hybrid_analysis.htm)

Briefly, fellows who defeat hybrid technology, hybrid owners, fans and their ideas known as anti-hybrids. This often happened when you are going to talk about hybrids on non-hybrids forums. Best example is autolanka forum. Just read some hybrid related topics and you will realize what’s going on. If you have time, read John’s anti-hybrid analysis report to get a better understanding.

Anti-hybrid guys like to see hybrid fails in our country. Either they don’t know about this technology or some time "Asai – Bayai" type. We can give an excuse for less awareness. They will learn in future. Other type is the worst. They are purely "kuhakayo"

Advertisements and brand names used here is not intended for marketing. Just to prove the facts. If I’m violating forum rules, forgive me.

Ok, now, if you are going to buy a car, do you still hesitate to be a proud owner of space ship like prius or insight?
