Out of all the post-Nirvana alternative bands to break
into the pop mainstream, Green Day were second only to
Pearl Jam in terms of influence. At their core, Green Day
were simply punk revivalists who recharged the energy of
speedy, catchy three-chord punk-pop songs. Though their
music wasn't particularly innovative, they brought the
sound of late-'70s punk to a new, younger generation with
Dookie, their 1994 major-label debut. Dookie sold over ten
million copies, paving the way for a string of
multi-platinum releases that opened the doors for a flood
of American neo-punk, punk metal, and third wave ska
revivalists. More than a decade later, as many of their
former contemporaries settled into retirement, Green Day
remained at the forefront of popular music with albums
like the Grammy-winning American Idiot

Green Day arose from the Northern California underground
punk scene. Childhood friends Billie Joe Armstrong
(guitar, vocals) and Mike Dirnt (bass; born Mike
Pritchard) formed their first band, Sweet Children, in
Rodeo, CA, when they were 14 years old. By 1989, the group
had added drummer Al Sobrante and changed its name to
Green Day. That same year, the band independently released
its first EP, 1000 Hours, which was well received in the
California hardcore punk scene. Soon, the group had signed
a contract with the local independent label Lookout. Green
Day's first full album, 1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hour
was released later that year. Shortly after its release
the band replaced Sobrante with Tre Cool (born Frank Edwin
Wright III), who became the band's permanent drummer

After 2002's Hard Candy with its hit single "American Girls," which was used in a television commercial, followed by a best-of and a live offering, it seemed that just maybe the Counting Crows had said everything they needed to and may have simply slipped quietly into rock & roll history. Not so. Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings is a reminder, in many ways, of just how special this band is at their best. As a group whose debut album, August and Everything After, sold over 15 million copies, was released to such widespread critical acclaim in 1991, and was easily their most commercially successful offering ever, they are one of the few bands that still exist, let alone have a following. They sounded out of time then, with their roots stuck deep in rock's past, where songwriting craft, excellent musicianship, focused production, and wide-ranging aesthetic ambition resulted in carefully constructed, poetic, and sometimes over-thought albums. Not surprisingly, they still sound that way, and that's a good thing. Their music touches on everything from the Beatles to the Band, from Bob Dylan and Van Morrison to early R.E.M. and Tunnel of Love-era Bruce Springsteen. Don't be surprised to read and hear critics bemoaning that music like this in the 21st century has no place in the American pop pantheon. That's nonsense.

The Kills were often called a more visceral version of the White Stripes, so it's not much of a stretch for Kills frontwoman Alison Mosshart and Jack White from the White Stripes to join forces in a new group. Rounding out the Dead Weather lineup is White's Raconteur bassist Jack Lawrence and Queens of the Stone Age guitarist Dean Ferita, while Mosshart handles singing and White handles the skins. The group announced their existence with the typical short lead time that White is fond of lately--their first single, "Hang You From the Heavens," hit a mere months before their debut, Horehound, was slated for release--and a handful of live performances followed. Horehound mixes the cold-~censored~ blues the Kills and the White Stripes are known for, crossed with the classic rock that influences the band.

Vindictiv, formed and led by Swedish guitar sensation Stefan Lindholm, returns with another major platter of melodic metal, Ground Zero. Besides the addition of two other lead vocalists, you will also find the songs longer (most clocking in over 6 minutes) and some often heavier than their debut album. In the End, Vindictiv's Ground Zero is worthy sophomore effort and successor to last year's debut. Though sometimes heavier in parts, Vindictiv succeeds in merging melodic and intricate elements into excellent and entertaining progressive heavy metal arrangements.
