Pakistan grapple with Sri Lanka M-factor
Pakistan will look to blunt Lasith Malinga and wily off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan in their Group A encounter against Sri Lanka on Saturday, with captain Shahid Afridi confident of a win.
Co-hosts Sri Lanka, champions in 1996, and 1992 winners Pakistan are off to flying starts in the tournament with convincing wins against minnows Canada and Kenya, and are primed for their first big match.
"I am confident that we are up to the Sri Lankan challenge and ready for anything they throw at us, whether its Malinga or Muralitharan," said Afridi.
Muralitharan, who has a world record 521 wickets in 342 one-day internationals, has a tally of 95 against Pakistan in 64 matches, and is even more dangerous in home conditions.
"In Sri Lankan conditions and pitches, he (Muralitharan) is always very dangerous and he could probably turn the ball on the marble as well. He has so much experience and knows conditions well and that's why he is the best," said Afridi.
Afridi said Malinga, renowned for his slingy action, would find it tough after missing the Canada match due to a back strain.
"Malinga is a very good bowler but he is coming back from an injury, so let’s see how strong he is and how much he can adjust to the conditions," said Afridi.
Malinga has just ten wickets in nine matches against Pakistan including a best of 5-34.
Pakistan have also handled spinner Ajantha Mendis well. He has ten wickets against them in six matches.
Afridi hoped the sell-out match would be entertaining in a World Cup that needs a blockbuster clash between two of the big guns.
"It will be a good game. If we bowl well, bat well and go with positive body language and show more readiness for the game and willingness to win, I am sure we can pull it off," said Afridi.
Pakistan have never lost a World Cup match against Sri Lanka in six previous attempts but they were all before Sri Lanka became one of the top sides in the world game.
"The last match Sri Lanka played against us their fast bowlers did really well and they have a very good team combination. They’ve got good new guys in the side so we will have to play with our full strength and to win against them we need to give more than 100 percent effort," said Afridi.
Pakistan will look to improve on their starts — both in batting and bowling — at the match in Colombo.
"We are not short on motivation and our energy levels are good," said Afridi, looking to restrict the in-form Mahela Jayawardene, who scored a match-winning hundred during the team's 210-run win over Canada.
Besides Jayawardene, captain Kumar Sangakkara, Tillakaratne Dilshan and Upul Tharanga are in good form with the bat.
Jayawardene acknowledged Pakistan were a dangerous side.
"They (Pakistan) are a very good side, so we look forward to playing Pakistan. The boys showed great attitude in the match against Canada," said Jayawardene.
Sri Lanka will likely bring Malinga into the side in place of Thisara Perera, who took three wickets in the Canada match.
Pakistan will try to squeeze in off-spinner Saeed Ajmal, who has not played since his father's death in January this year.

The two sides have not faced each other in cricket's showpiece tournament since 1992, and the Premadasa has undergone extensive redevelopment. What will help Pakistan, though, is the relative lack of controversy surrounding the current team, a low-profile lead-up and the confidence of a recent series win, in New Zealand, behind them.
Sri Lanka's advantage is that most of their players have had a taste of how the new track will fare during the domestic limited-over tournament held in January. Traditionally, this has been a bat-first venue, especially in day-night games where the team chasing has won only one of the past 13 matches, but it remains to be seen how the re-laid pitch fares .

It may not be too high scoring a game, if the domestic matches played since the stadium was re-developed are anything to go by. The highest score batting first in the one-dayers played in January was 225, a total which was easily defended. Kumar Sangakkara, the Sri Lanka captain, though, expects the bare surface to be good for batting.

He worked up real pace in Hambantota, and has provided the team management with the welcome headache of working out how to accommodate him, Lasith Malinga, Nuwan Kulasekara and Angelo Mathews in the XI. He also adds muscle to Sri Lanka's lower-middle order. Shoaib Akhtar has weathered stacks of controversies and fitness problems to become one of the few constants in Pakistan's team. There has not been any talk of injuries for eight months, a minor miracle given his past record. Age hasn't slowed him down too much either; even at 35 he remains among the quickest bowlers in the world.

Kenya in turmoil ahead of Sri Lanka clash
Kenya face double trouble ahead of their all-important World Cup Group A match against Sri Lanka here on Tuesday, as they counter formidable opponents and differences between players and coach.
Kenya have lost both their matches at the tournament, going down by 10 wickets against New Zealand, after being shot out for just 69, before slumping to a 205-run loss to Pakistan.
Adding to their problems, reports have emerged of internal divisions within the squad.
Cricket Kenya chief Samir Inamdar on Sunday blamed differences between the players and West Indian coach Eldine Baptiste for their lacklustre performances.
But Kenya captain Jimmy Kamande brushed aside the reports, saying his team is united.
"There is no fighting, no worries," said Kamande. "Maybe there is miscommunication, but I can assure you we are all here as a family and are happy. We will show some improvement in future games."
Kenyan cricket has been dogged by political problems since the famous run to the 2003 World Cup semi-finals.
It was in that World Cup where Kenya beat Sri Lanka in Nairobi, but that is their only win in five clashes between the two nations.

Kamande said every member of the team needed to perform in Colombo.
"We need all eleven players to perform, which has not happened in the last two matches, especially against New Zealand," said Kamande, whose team conceded a world record equalling 37 wides against Pakistan and were bowled out for 112.
"We are still in this tournament and what we need is to do well against Sri Lanka which is a very strong team," said Kamande. "Sri Lanka have some good spinners so we have to deal with them, and fight well."
Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara urged his team not to panic after slipping to defeat against Pakistan.
"We have Kenya, followed by Australia, so we will look back on the defeat and learn from our mistakes which is very important," said Sangakkara.
"There are a few things we can learn. Bowling a better line and length is important and when we bat partnerships are important and we shouldn’t panic," added the skipper, who scored 49 against Pakistan.
The top four teams from each group will qualify for the quarter-finals and Sangakkara stressed the need to keep improving as the tournament progresses.
"We are just going to keep preparing and keep playing as best we know how. There's a long way to go in this tournament so we just have got to keep plugging on and make sure that we perform as well as we can," said Sangakkara.
Kenya face double trouble ahead of their all-important World Cup Group A match against Sri Lanka here on Tuesday, as they counter formidable opponents and differences between players and coach.
Kenya have lost both their matches at the tournament, going down by 10 wickets against New Zealand, after being shot out for just 69, before slumping to a 205-run loss to Pakistan.
Adding to their problems, reports have emerged of internal divisions within the squad.
Cricket Kenya chief Samir Inamdar on Sunday blamed differences between the players and West Indian coach Eldine Baptiste for their lacklustre performances.
But Kenya captain Jimmy Kamande brushed aside the reports, saying his team is united.
"There is no fighting, no worries," said Kamande. "Maybe there is miscommunication, but I can assure you we are all here as a family and are happy. We will show some improvement in future games."
Kenyan cricket has been dogged by political problems since the famous run to the 2003 World Cup semi-finals.
It was in that World Cup where Kenya beat Sri Lanka in Nairobi, but that is their only win in five clashes between the two nations.
