I agree agriculture is a strategic industry, but the market has to be opened up and competition has to increase with the inflow of imported food, where conventional farmers should switch to extensive methods whereby being able to achieve economies of scale.

Nice ideas but I'm not sure whether I can really agree with this part, during the past govt. rule because of the imports that were permitted we nearly killed our agri industry, and also we know what happened to the farmers, they driven to the extremes and finally ended up taking their own lives!

The problem is with the traders, not with the supply or the demand, the traders too greedy trying to make it look like there's a shortage always! These should be countered first and should be taken tough measures against them!

Now that the North is liberated there's a huge opportunity to get back that solid agri culture based economy we had decades ago, as I've heard the North and the North Eastern parts are the Ideal places for this, flat lands, rich soil.... we must make use of these first before trying to import everything, and there's no point importing things that can be easily grown here...

Agreed, however right now, they need to clear the grounds from the millions of land mines. Wouldnt want cows to get airborne all of sudden do you? :P
Also the basic infrastructure need to be re built in those areas before serious industry can be started.

There you go.. a little bit of govt regulation perhaps?

Now that the North is liberated there's a huge opportunity to get back that solid agri culture based economy we had decades ago, as I've heard the North and the North Eastern parts are the Ideal places for this, flat lands, rich soil.... we must make use of these first before trying to import everything, and there's no point importing things that can be easily grown here...

Yeah. Thats an opportunity for extensive farming. But agriculture is subsidized, mostly in terms of fertilizer now. The farmers have no push factor really. Maybe a little bit of competition from aborad would help them exploit more opportunity, as you said in the north and north east.

The govt could help them with this buy providing land cheaply, or encouraging more commercial methods like tractors as opposed to buffalos.

Agriculture is a key industry. And a country should never rely on another for food.
Thats why the US subsidize their farmers so much, and so does the EU with their Common Agricultural Policy (CAP).

Another thought is that, Sri Lanka is known for having a balance between cheap labour and quality whereby attracting multinationals to outsource. So I think it would be better that we exploit this market niche instead of promoting low cost or cheap stuff like China and India. :)

I think that the answer is the technology. even in the argucluture we can use technology , let the hard working to machines and as humans we can be infront of a computer system. and enjoy programming computing and electronics.
