KDU continues Social Responsibility Initiative with Cadets from the United States
General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU), Sri Lanka’s premiere national defence university, carried out a social responsibility initiative (SRI) in Brandiyawatta, Wellampitiya today, 27th May 2016. This area was severely affected by the recent deluge due to Cyclone Roanu.
35 Cadets, from both KDU (inclusive of five Lady Cadets) and the United States participated in this programme. Through this initiative, 25 houses were completely cleaned and disinfected, enabling them to be ready for occupation by the families.
In addition to these houses being made completely hygienic, KDU also ensured that families in the area had sufficient dry rations and drinking water. Families were further provided with clothes as well as school bags and stationery for school children. These were distributed among 50 families.
Speaking at the social responsibility initiative, Vice Chancellor – KDU, Rear Admiral Jagath Ranasinghe stated, “As unhappy as we are that these families were affected by this natural disaster, I am glad that KDU, along with Cadets from the United States were able to assist and provide a helping hand to the families affected. I am grateful to the US Cadets for cooperating with us in this programme and to the Ministry of Defence for permitting us to take part in such an initiative.”
Deputy Vice Chancellor (Defence & Administration), Major General Ruwan Kulatunga, Dean – Faculty of Defence & Strategic Studies, Colonel Chandana Wickramasinghe, Deputy Dean – Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, Lieutenant Colonel Buddhika Perera and other officers from the Tri-Services took part in this timely initiative.
Prior to this, on 19th May, KDU took necessary measures to provide cooked food and other rations to 2000 people affected by the floods on an urgent basis. These meals, prepared within the hygiene environs of KDU, were provided to the families who were safely evacuated to the Weragoda Purana Raja Viharaya.
