    Step 1: Configuring IBus.
Go to System -> Preferences -> IBus Preferences and open "IBus Preferences" dialog box.

Go to "Input Method" tab and select a preferred keyboard layout under "Sinhala;Sinhalese" from "Select an input method" drop-down menu.

    Step 2: Essential.
Goto your home directory (~) and open the file named ".bashrc" and add following lines to the bottom of it.

    export GTK_IM_MODULE=ibus
    export XMODIFIERS=@im=ibus
    export QT_IM_MODULE=ibus

    Step 3: Make IBus auto-start on sart-up.
Go to System -> Preferences -> Startup Applications and open the dialog box called "Startup Applications", and click "Add" button. In the next dialog box, enter "ibus-daemon" in "Command:" text box, enter "IBus" in "Name:" text box.

    Step 4: Font settings.
Ubuntu's default Sinhala Unicode font should be replaced for a better performance. Go to /usr/share/fonts/truetype as root and delete "freefonts" directory. Install new Sinhala Unicode font and update Ubuntu's font cache.

    sudo fc-cache -f -v

With a re-login, you are good to go

For Ubuntu 12.04 LTS desktop (Precise Pangolin)

You have to configure Ubuntu software repository before this

    Follow bellow steps

    1. Go to system settings from the launcher
    2. click on the language support icon
    3. Then click install
    4. Select install/remove languages
    5. Enable sinhala
    6. Click apply changes
    7. Select keyboard input method to "ibus"
    8. Close the wizard

    Then

    1. Go to UBUNTU software center
    2. Search for sinhala and install (below one)
    3. "unicode sinhala font by lanka linux user group"
    4. Again search for the package "m17"
    5. Click on the bottom of the software center to show technical items
    6. Install "m17n engine for ibus"
    7. Then logout and login

Now you can see ibus keyboard icon on the right hand side on the panel

    Then

    1. Click on the "ibus" keyboard icon
    2. select preferences
    3. go to input method tab
    4. Enable customerize active input methods
    5. Select an input method
    6. Select sinhala language and select necessary unicode fonts one by one.
    7. Then close

Finally you can go to text editor and click ibus icon and select font and type on the text editor

    :)

    Cheers
